Great video man! I went to the star wars universe! I have a video about it ua-cam.com/video/_R5AilD3xuU/v-deo.htmlsi=p3c069J1aK8ISgTi&t=137
I would like to see some more retro game videos. Either old trailers/conferences/promotions/commercials/ect... Or maybe just make a video of yourself talking about/playing an old game that has a special place in your heart. Just an idea.
Can't wait for this to come out. Looks incredible!
- I think you can get it - must be an early release - on something called g-o-g ?….
Psh don't get your hopes up. No way it'll be amazing or well-remembered.
Video games were just different back then, man. It was just nerds making games for other nerds. I miss it.
Yeah, I agree. It’s quite sad that most games nowadays are just a product with no love invested in them
I think that's really only true for big, AAA games for the most part. There's plenty of games out there for you, especially if you're a fan of KOTOR. @@dansoare6184
That is still a thing, now it's just that there's a lot more monetary interest than never before.
But then capitalism happened.
@@Mickekzon Yeah, games and life are way better under communism.
The fact that they developed cloth and hair physics simulation tech all the way back then is pretty insane to me. Looks like it was cut or heavily gimped in the final game, but I suspect that's because of hardware limitations and optimisation issues
A lot of developers were very imaginative and ambitious back then. They are still now, but back then it felt like developers felt like they could promise the moon and you could feel that they meant it even if they couldn’t deliver. Halo 2 had to scrap everything and start over in the last years of development because the earlier build just put too much on the Xbox. Stuff like that always stuck with me during this period of gaming.
@@gabethebabe3337 Yeah... That's why Halo 2 was crazy on Legendary difficulty
@@gabethebabe3337 "A lot of developers were very imaginative and ambitious back then. They are still now, but back then it felt like developers felt like they could promise the moon and you could feel that they meant it even if they couldn’t deliver."
Ahem. Peter Molyneux, Fable. I'll say no more...
@@gabethebabe3337 Sometimes the best art comes from situations where you have a lot of restrictions, where you have to get creative to achieve something. I still have some pencil work that I haven't been able to top in over 10 years of doing digital art.
You can still find that ambition in the indie side, just look at all the attention to detail in games like Highfleet (made afaik by a single person) where, despite the retroish 2D nature of the game, the environments are full of detail explosions and other effects look more real than in most AAA games with budgets in the millions. Or look at something like X4, a HUGE space sandbox sim, made by a relatively small (albeit experienced) team with a tiny budget where you can sit on the flight deck of a carrier and observe the launching of fighters in real time, watch as they fly off into battle and then return to repair and resupply, then walk to an M sized deck on the ship, pull your frigate out of storage and take it to battle yourself, your frigate which itself carries a pair of smaller ships, ships inside ships inside ships. All while your trading empire autonomously rakes in profits to feed your ever expanding war machine, and your mining ships scour the systems half a galaxy away for valuable materials, all in real time.
All the way back then…? It wasn’t that long ago lol. And this was not surprising.
do people not know what a demo build is? lol everything in this video is like a "sampler". no, you weren't going to meet malak early on. look at that Taris section, it's literally a straight line with a droid goin in circles, a bunch of random jedi, a sith trooper with a lightsaber etc. it's just to showcase one of everything.
Back when Star Wars was worth getting excited for
Shit I meant excited
6:33 Simply using Windows 2000 to make games, noice!
It’s crazy how much changed from the finished product
Crazy how different parts the game looked just 2 years before it's release.
Many of the character assets like the Sith troopers and Darth Malak look like they were re-done for the final version.
If I were watching this in 2001 I wouldn't have had very high hopes for the game to be honest, it looked pretty cheesy lol...
Overall I think the final game turned out great.
the final game is cheesy af tho
Love hearing Casey Hudson talk about KOTOR. Most behind the scenes and interviews stuff he does is for Mass Effect, which I also adore, but it’s nice to see him talk about KOTOR.
Man, that shot in the end with the twillight is amazing
What a blast from the past! Feels like it happened in a completely different lifetime.
The GOAT
Nah, 2nd one was way better, besides of the more bugs...
Pioneers, it was one of the first games where I saw the first PBR textures.
I'm now the head of the 3D design team and I often secretly look back on this game.
Thank you for sharing this video.
how did this game use pbr textures?
@@alperisler89 In some cases the game uses an early form of PBR textures - a perfect example is Selkath character model and its normal and specular textures.
i don't remember the lightsaber fights being that cool
This is ultra rare! Thank for posting this
Someone has got to have copy's of the early files! Wish we could get a hold of them!!
Man this video cements my belief that KOTOR is the sibling of SWG even further
Company management should learn to let devs finish their project properly when they are dedicated and passionate about it. Rushing and fixed releases don't work all the time and cutting content is just a shame. It can be far more greater.
Jesus Christ, the assembly cut is totally different than the finished product we got. No vehicles going about on Tatooine, 11:23, no large Cityscapes or huge battles. No Sith-troopers on Tatooine either. This was too ambitious to the bare bones the Knights of the Old Republic was when it got published. 12:52, look at this real-time scene, nothing like this happened in KOTOR 1... too depressing to watch knowing what might have been and yet, I loved both KOTOR 1 & 2. Given that what was first shown and what we got in the end was made by actual BioWare in its prime, I guess I can't really complain as they were top of the line Dev-team back then when they worked on this baby. Thank you for the video of a bygone era, MNH 2302. Subbed.
could it be because the game wasnt even close to being finished?
@@purefoldnz3070 You're correct, I was only freaked out/amazed how much superior was what we saw here. At least I loved the final product and it was radically different, but still even the mighty BioWare couldn't finish this beast of a game that potentially could have been.
@@StefanBlagojevic the mighty BioWare has fallen
@@purefoldnz3070 Of course, that was BioWare in its prime, with Casey Hudson and many, many other talented Devs, that created all these glorious RPG games back in the day. From what I heard, Casey Hudson did form a new game development firm and gathered a lot of his former BioWare colleagues. They are now working on a spiritual successor to Mass Effect, it's called Humanoid: Origin. I wish them all the best, as all good things do come to an end, but then again, hopefully they rise up to the new challenge as well. Fingers crossed for a good game down the line.
At least we have Mass Effect, which reached that development potential.
SOVL INCARNATE
I feel bad for gamers today who didn't get to grow up with this masterpiece
I think that’s mark meer voicing the sith trooper at 10:30
Sounds like Shepherd!
This looks amazing. Cant wait to play it!
its weird how the model and voice acting are so different compared to what was released
The devs were probably the ones voicing the characters in this honeslty.
I hate to admit this, BUT IT LOOKS A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN THE FINAL PRODUCT XD, but I understand that they were being very ambitious for the time (I mean, not even Windows XP, but 2000) and maybe that's how the poor Xbox exploded with so much graphical weight, but everything looks so good😢
.
An elegant game for a more civilized age
Best Star Wars game ever ❤
Thanks for sharing!! 😊
Wow this is incredible
I love KOTOR as it is, but wow they really had to scale it down from what they planned. I imagine it was because of console limitations.
You can tell this is all just scripted scenarios made specifically for the E3 presentation. That lightsaber fight? Come on. Malak on Taris? That's just silly. All of this looks so much different than the final product, but the actual game turned out great anyway. It's actually kinda weird how much has changed in just 2 years.
Why does this video Look almost better than the actual game in certain ways?
From 14:14 onwards yo can see how different the beginning was wanna play: a Jedi starting in the siege of Taris and even confronting Malak! It would have been awesome seeing the battle, but I'm glad they added the Endar Spire and made you a guy without powers
Ah... back when they made real games with practical effects...
What are you talking about? Practical effects?!
@@finscontingencyplan7005 It's a jab at a trend regarding modern movies... not really related to games, apart from how some people think that older games were better, similarly to how some think that practical effects in movies are better.
Saber Interactive should remake this video.
I am so stoked for this game!!!!
Very interesting
Back before MBAs ruined gaming as an artistic medium.
Is that a young Casey Hudson narrating?
Why, why, why, why!!!!!! Why Tatooine looks so much better than released title: moving speeders, walking aliens, better animation? Is it due to first Xbox limitations?
Yes. Xbox was weaksauce.
As always the fucking consoles
@@jamin12342 At least the PC has the Yavin level. But yeah, I agree. Consoles ruin everything. There are a few mods on PC. One provides some restored content too and this is for the original KOTOR, not KOTOR 2. But it doesn't do anything as far as restoring the moving speeders and stuff like that.
Xbox has always had the yavin level, it was dlc on the original xbox and comes with the game by default nowadays on xbox one
Oh my god, my buddy in primary school told me about this taris section and i never believed him.
Oh no im so sorry
Need more passion in games. Big companies purchasing small studios is a hit or miss nowadays
Sorta disappointed they removed certain voice lines and the fact that you met malak early on would of been more awesome than meeting him for the first time and being revan but that would ruin the plot as well
10:10 8 worlds... we were robbed of Sleheyron
Who are the two people explaining in the video?
@@tylerhatesanythingfun I unfortunately don’t know.
The one doing most of the explaining is Casey Hudson, the project lead for the game.
Release date?????
This has completely ruined my fav game of all time, damn all this looked amazing! Wish we all had this finished game back then.
