    Lots of people are surprised that what we see looks different from the game we got. They don't understand that those areas were made to test mechanics and technology not to be a part of the game. In game development writing story and creating mechanics/ technology is usually done simultaneously, so when making testing areas no one cares about them being a part of narrative. That voice acting you have heard was to test if voice acting works properly and was most likely done by the devs themselves, not professional actors.

    really interesting and how much has changed 2 years before the release, the whole character design, UI etc. are so different
    seems like they scrapped the physics for hair and cloth on the characters aswell

      It was not changed, it was a fake prerendered scene (which was unfortunately common with E3 presentations). The model is from a 3D editor and not from the actual game engine.

    • @evilmonkeywithissues
      @evilmonkeywithissues Рік тому +11

      @@IkarusKommt showing a character in a model viewer is not 'fake and prerendered', especially given that this game was made in the Aurora Engine. This is the same engine that Neverwinter Nights 2 was built in and a modified version of the engine used for Neverwinter Nights 1. That model viewer is a tool included with the engine, not a separate program, meaning what you get in the viewer is what you get in game. They ultimately probably did scrap the physics, either because of constraints tied to the Xbox's paltry 64MB of RAM, or because it wasn't working the way that they wanted to.
      It's not common for devs to 'lie' at E3, it's just that these games are shown in a very early conceptual stage, and they talk about things that they plan to include that may get scrapped at some point. Given that the games are nowhere near completion at the time that these events pop up, they have to slap together poof of concept projects using what they have, and that's why there are ultimately so many changes from E3 to release. Game development is like a rollercoaster, lots of twists and turns arise during production, and lots of things change as a result.
      If anything, to prevent people from assuming that the devs are 'lying' because something doesn't make the final cut, they should probably keep the talking points down and keep as much info as possible to themselves so far from the release window, but unfortunately, because the people funding these projects are very ignorant to how development actually works, and because they are out purely for profit, they encourage the devs to talk about things that sounded cool to them during the pitch meetings. This leads to things being shown or mentioned that don't make the cut. That's just how it is, it doesn't make it a lie, it just means that it's something they wanted to implement that just never materialized for whatever reason.

    • @pipgoesthepossum
      @pipgoesthepossum Рік тому +16

      @@penttikoivuniemi2146 Yes, indeed. Which in some ways makes the differences more interesting. Clearly the planets were part of the concept from the beginning, but it seems at one point you might have started out as a Jedi potentially if you wanted, which seems to imply the Revan plot twist had not yet been figured out. They also mention 3 races you could choose from in character creation, which seems to maybe imply it was planned that you could have been a non-human race at some point? It's just fascinating how much of the core is there, and yet how much of it also remains to be defined at this point in development. Really cool insight.

The animations, physics, scripted events, NPC dialogue, moving speeders, background environments, and lightsaber combat make the game seem so much livelier. Even the player character looks cooler than any of those in the final game. I wish all those things would've made it into the final game, but I guess it was too much for the hardware at the time. The game doesn’t necessarily look more advanced than what KOTOR 1 became, but it does look much more like a derivative of the Neverwinter formula. Even more so than what KOTOR 1 already was.
    Though the animations make it really hard to gauge exactly what’s going on. The combat ones look really good and better than the actual game, but we’re clearly not seeing a combat system play out. In fact the absence of a combat system is very telling, it doesn’t seem like one actually exists in this demo. It looks like two NPCs playing through a scripted animation set. (Also, just goes to show how much BioWare’s philosophy towards combat systems changed as they began to develop for Jade Empire and Mass Effect.)
    But besides that, most of what they mentioned made it into the game. The Taris level even looks like a “proto version” of the Endar Spire. But one thing that definitely didn’t get represented fully was how the world reacts to you. Characters react to your alignment specifically, not your actions. This might seem like a silly distinction as your actions define your alignment, but NPCs solely reacting to your alignment is much less nuanced as it’s essentially a binary reaction not an organic one.

    Guys, thanks for your work, but can we know the pace of your work on UA-cam? Will it be sporadic or on a specific schedule?

      I guess we'll find out together. I suspect every 2 weeks we'll have a batch of videos. We may spread them out some. And then sometimes we'll have a large collection together. For instance we found a bunch of Halo 3 interviews and beta gameplay and will probably upload all of those in one go together so fans can dig through them.

      Ooo, given the age of the stuff you're going through now, I assume the Halo 3 Interviews will be the ones they hosted on Xbox Live. Is the plan to make playlists for series of videos, or "SuperCut" videos that would put all videos in a series together?

    Wow, it's funny how many animations in this demo aren't in the final game..

    Interestingly the saber combat actually looks like what was used in the Revenge Of The Sith game. Obviously KOTOR combat didn’t keep this. But graphically doesn’t look that different, just early on. So wonder if the KOTOR engine actually has that none tabletop combat part still in there.
