The EarthtonesGirl Podcast Presents:
NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
Class 13: Garter Stitch Heel Flap with Dutch/Square Heel Turn
In Today's class we will be learning how to knit a garter stitch heel flap with a Dutch (aka. square) heel turn. This tutorial explores the beauty, comfort and durability of applying garter stitch to the heel flap and Dutch/square heel turn. Stockinette stitch options for the heel turn are also demonstrated. If you understand the basics of sock knitting and want to try something new, then you will really enjoy this class.
The Dutch Heel, also known as a square heel, maintains the same width of the turned heel from beginning to end and has a squared look once completed. Essentially, stitches from the center third of the heel flap will continue through the heel turn as stitches from the sides are decreased; this creates a band under the heel.
This tutorial is featured in my new sock pattern, ALACRITY SOCKS
available on Ravelry and my website, earthtonesgirl.com

Oh my gosh. You need to know this is an old lady who has made a LOT of socks in my day. But I’d totally forgotten how to turn a heal. Totally forgot. You rescued me with your clear explanation and caused all the fog to go away.
I’m so glad it was helpful!!
Had to stop n tell you, you have such a beautiful voice! Ok, back to learning 😊

Thank you, friend. I love all you class series. It feels like we are in the same room.
Thank you so much for your video tutorials! One if these days I will shake my fear of socks! You make it look so easy, but I somehow manage to mess it up! 😮 I've only made one pair, but it took me three years to complete the pair! 😂
Youre welcome!! And my thought is, there are much bigger and scarier things in life than knitting a sock. Kick that fear to the curb and try again...
Thank you for the great tutorial. I will try this heal on my next pair of socks. 🇬🇧
I remembered that this pattern was going to drop soon...I've been watching for it. Thanks for the companion tutorial!
You’re welcome!!
You are my go to sock pattern! Thanks for the new to me tutorial.
You are so welcome!
So its like modified short rows. Cool! I just started another pair of short sox...i use 2.5 mm needles and 56 sts. I will do the math and try it. So excited because its everything i like about short rows and none if the crazy! Wahoo!
Just a question i have never been brave enough to act on: Is there a way give the heel bone a st, slip st squishy bottom? Us oldies could really get into that.
Yes, you can do a slip stitch on the heel but the nature of garter stitch is very squishy so this may work for you.
Very interesting square heel that I have never seen before. Definitely going to give this a go on my next pair. Thank you very much.
You’re welcome!
Great podcast thanks
Blessings ❤thank you 😊
Love this heal. Can't wait to try it.

Oh my, will try this for sure! Looks so neat and tidy. You leave no stone unturned. Thank you for opening so many windows and doors for sock knitters. Your calming voice convinces me I’m capable of knitting this heel. 💕🧶🤗
I’m so anxious to try this method ❤ I’ve only made one pair of socks in my life. But I messed up the heel in one sock. Which kind of burst my bubble, to attempt another pair. 😊 you make it seem so easy ! Clear instructions are appreciated, when you tell us to carry on... I don’t feel like you’ve left me hanging to figure out the rest. Lol Thank you

Great video. I've knit about 35 pairs of socks and have done heel flap and gusset on 2. After this I'm going to try this heel on my next pair. Thanks so much 😊

I had to cast on immediately after watching your tutorial. And I have completed one sock. I love the heel and it fits so well. Thank you for the demonstration

Denise, You are an amazing teach and your spirit is wonderful. I always enjoy listening to your wonderful and informative podcast on socks and life. I truly wish I could see you teach in person, what a wonderful I would have and such a gift. I knitted my 1st pair of socks for my Dad when I was 16 for his birthday, they were a pair of arguyals and he loves them so much. Your voice is so soft and very easy to listen to as well. So great full I found you last year. Thank you Ginny
Aww, thanks so much Ginny!!
Thank you once again for a very clear and easily understood lesson. I have never used this heel before. I will have to try it
You are very welcome!!! So glad you enjoyed it!!
I’m learning something new!!! Thank you so much for making this less scary! God Bless you and all yours 🙏🏽
You are so welcome
Thank you, thankyou, Denise for showing this garter stitch heel flap and dutch square heel. I think this would a fabulous heel flap and heel turn for a beginner like me. I have tried so many different type and I am going to give his one a try.Exellent tips. I can't wait to try it. Thank you.
You are very welcome Sandi!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
I never fail to learn something new and interesting about sock knitting in addition to the particular skill/technique you are teaching. Congrats on another fabulous pattern release! harpingJanet
Thank you so much, Janet!!
Hello from St.Louis Missouri! I am going to have to try the heel flap, it looks very unique. Thanks for the great video.
You are welcome Janet!!

ElaineXo 🏡🏡⚘
Thanks so much Elaine!!
Oh my goodness, just did this heel today and it was so easy and looks wonderful! 🎉❤
YAY!! That makes me so happy to hear!!!
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast I sent a photo of my finished sock to my friend and she loved the heel. 😁
I just ordered 2 24” knitting needles and some yummy yarn Denise. You have really started something for me lol I have granddaughters who want me to knit socks for them so here I go lol Thank you and appreciate all your video’s.😊Also I’m sure you have been told this before but I find you’re very explicit in your tutorials.
Outstanding! I have never worked either a Dutch nor a garter heel before and I feel completely confident in how to do it. I also love how you eliminate the gusset holes at the instep edges and it will make my socks so much neater now.
That makes me so happy to hear!!! Thank you!!
I just completed THE best heel flap I’ve ever done, thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I had watched the sock course you had put out several years ago, but had forgotten so many of your wonderful tips and tricks, and this was a wonderful refresher!
Thank you so much for watching Joanne. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
This is great! Even though I love the shadow wrap heel, I sometimes do flap and gusset heels but I hate the. Slip stitch row followed by a purl row. I tend to make a lot of mistakes on the slip stitch rows. This is so much nicer!
Thank you Cathy! I'm so glad you like it!!
I have made about eight pairs of different sock patterns. I have learned so many good tips from this video!! Thank you for the tutorial!
You're very welcome Carol!! So happy you enjoyed it!!
Denise, you never disappoint with your tutorials! I am going to give these heels a try especially as I have higher arches and why not experiment, right? I have to say that the sock yarn colorway is glorious and it made me want Neapolitan ice cream 😂 I guess that's what comes of watching this at night after dinner.
Wonderful class. I just started a pair of socks and I’m going to try this heel flap and turn. I usually knit the slip stitch heel flap. I think I will really like this. Not sure yet which I will use-garter or stockinette. Thank you for this class.
Thank you Wynona!!! So glad you enjoyed it!!! Happy Sock Knitting!!
So glad to hear your earthy voice while I work on a project. Now I'll buy the pattern and knit a pair while watching the video.
Your no fear tutorials helped me tackle a pair of socks in a knitted sock book I bought. I knit thru the back loop of the picked up stitches automatically!
Thank you so much Valerie!!!
You are such a GREAT teacher and very patient. I can’t wait to try this new heel ❤
I love this so much! The scariest part of socks is the heel for me. Even though I have knit several pairs. I am so excited to knit one of your heels. Due to these tutorials, I feel like I can do it! Now I have to decide if I want to do this one or your shadow wrap heal first! Thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
You are a fantastic teacher! I got into knitting about 2 months ago because I suddenly became obsessed with socks! I wanted to learn new techniques for different looks and I came across your video (it was recommended to me) and I am now going to watch the entire playlist on this because I have learned more from you in this one video than I have in the 230942039420394 videos that I have been watching to learn how to knit socks!
I am eager to learn from this series because I am looking for the "formula" for socks. I can see that there is one when you're talking about number of stitches in the beginning which will determine how many stitches you're using for the heel flap and then heel turn. I really want to learn this for pattern writing purposes. I am an indie yarn dyer and sell my yarn on Etsy but eventually, I want to pair patterns with the yarn to sell as kits. Makes it easier for crafters to have a kit: yarn and pattern in one shot!
Thank you for this tutorial and all the videos in this playlist!
230942039420394 is A LOT of vidoes, 😂!!!! I'm so glad you stuck with it and found your way to mine!!! You are so welcome here and I hope you enjoy the rest of my classes!!!
greatl tutorial, easy to follow, thank you. can I use this with a toe up sock?
Thank you, Rose! And yes, I’m about 99% sure that you can knit this toe up!!
I love this heel. Is it possible to do this dutch heel starting from toes and working to cuff?
I love your Videos so much!!!! Is there any way you can do this tutorial showing how to knit it toe up?? That is my favorite way to knit socks mainly because I like to not worry about running out of yarn and I dislike seaming the toe!
Thank you so much. I'm so glad you enjoy them! As of right now I don't have plans to do a tutorial for this heel toe up. I do know it can be substituted in a toe up heel flap and gusset sock pattern.
You are dynamite. I love your heel method.
Thank you! 😊
Thank you Denise , it is again a great tutorial you have made . I have a question in the garterstitch heel turn you uses on both sides k2tog , which are right leaning decreases. In the stockinette heel turn you use k2 tog and p2tog which is a left leaning decrease.
Is there a difference between the two ways ? As a knitter from the Netherlands ( a Dutch knitter ) I have learned the Dutch heel turn or square heel to use SSK on the knit rows and a p2tog on the purl rows.
BRAVA! Another spectacular video class. I love listening to your voice it is so calming and friendly and can make a sometimes new (and possibly frustrating) task seem doable. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and love of the craft with all of us. You are an amazing human! *)
Thank you so much Eileen!!!
I can't wait to try this smoochy heel on my next pair of socks. Do you think I could do it on a toe up model? Thank you so much 😊
Yes, I think you can you!! Have fun!!! And you are so welcome!!!
I learn so much from your tutorials! I was looking for a sock pattern with a 'cushy' heel! Curious if you have a heel pattern/idea for double stranded heel so it's a bit thicker for boots or a hubby who wears through the heel! I appreciate you and your sharing of your knowledge! BTW I always love knitting with your podcast or tutorial 'cause then I feel like I am knitting with a friend! :)
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you have found my tutorials so helpful. Unfortunately I do not have a pattern for a double stranded heel but you may be able to find one on Ravelry.
I learned how to knit socks from your tutorials and am so happy to see this one! Your teaching is great and so easy to follow. One question, do you decrease every round or dec 1 round, knit 1 round? it sounds like you're saying decrease every round? Thanks so much!!
Thank you very much TonyaLynn.
This tutorial is to demonstrate the basic technique, and how to knit this heel. All of the actual instructions to knit a pair of socks, using this method is the Alacrity Socks pattern. Which is linked in the description box below the video.
Is it possible to do a Dutch heel turn in a toe up sock, I love the look of it. Thanks for an amazing tutorial
I am about 99% sure that it can be done toe up!
Great tutorial Denise. I did guess on a 60 stitch sock. So I was wondering if I knitted across 18 stitches to then start the decrease, knit 2 together, then slip one, knit 8 stitches on the other side, do the decrease, then turn, and continue. So is this correct? Thanks for any help. Take care. So glad I just found your channel.😊
That sounds right!!! I would put in a safety line then give it a try. If the numbers do not work then you can safely rip back.
