    The EarthtonesGirl Podcast Presents:
NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
Class 13: Garter Stitch Heel Flap with Dutch/Square Heel Turn
In Today's class we will be learning how to knit a garter stitch heel flap with a Dutch (aka. square) heel turn. This tutorial explores the beauty, comfort and durability of applying garter stitch to the heel flap and Dutch/square heel turn. Stockinette stitch options for the heel turn are also demonstrated. If you understand the basics of sock knitting and want to try something new, then you will really enjoy this class.
The Dutch Heel, also known as a square heel, maintains the same width of the turned heel from beginning to end and has a squared look once completed. Essentially, stitches from the center third of the heel flap will continue through the heel turn as stitches from the sides are decreased; this creates a band under the heel.
This tutorial is featured in my new sock pattern, ALACRITY SOCKS
available on Ravelry and my website, earthtonesgirl.com

So its like modified short rows. Cool! I just started another pair of short sox...i use 2.5 mm needles and 56 sts. I will do the math and try it. So excited because its everything i like about short rows and none if the crazy! Wahoo!
Just a question i have never been brave enough to act on: Is there a way give the heel bone a st, slip st squishy bottom? Us oldies could really get into that.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  Рік тому

Yes, you can do a slip stitch on the heel but the nature of garter stitch is very squishy so this may work for you.

You are a fantastic teacher! I got into knitting about 2 months ago because I suddenly became obsessed with socks! I wanted to learn new techniques for different looks and I came across your video (it was recommended to me) and I am now going to watch the entire playlist on this because I have learned more from you in this one video than I have in the 230942039420394 videos that I have been watching to learn how to knit socks!
I am eager to learn from this series because I am looking for the "formula" for socks. I can see that there is one when you're talking about number of stitches in the beginning which will determine how many stitches you're using for the heel flap and then heel turn. I really want to learn this for pattern writing purposes. I am an indie yarn dyer and sell my yarn on Etsy but eventually, I want to pair patterns with the yarn to sell as kits. Makes it easier for crafters to have a kit: yarn and pattern in one shot!
Thank you for this tutorial and all the videos in this playlist!

Thank you Denise , it is again a great tutorial you have made . I have a question in the garterstitch heel turn you uses on both sides k2tog , which are right leaning decreases. In the stockinette heel turn you use k2 tog and p2tog which is a left leaning decrease.
Is there a difference between the two ways ? As a knitter from the Netherlands ( a Dutch knitter ) I have learned the Dutch heel turn or square heel to use SSK on the knit rows and a p2tog on the purl rows.

I learn so much from your tutorials! I was looking for a sock pattern with a 'cushy' heel! Curious if you have a heel pattern/idea for double stranded heel so it's a bit thicker for boots or a hubby who wears through the heel! I appreciate you and your sharing of your knowledge! BTW I always love knitting with your podcast or tutorial 'cause then I feel like I am knitting with a friend! :)

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you have found my tutorials so helpful. Unfortunately I do not have a pattern for a double stranded heel but you may be able to find one on Ravelry.

I learned how to knit socks from your tutorials and am so happy to see this one! Your teaching is great and so easy to follow. One question, do you decrease every round or dec 1 round, knit 1 round? it sounds like you're saying decrease every round? Thanks so much!!

      Thank you very much TonyaLynn.
This tutorial is to demonstrate the basic technique, and how to knit this heel. All of the actual instructions to knit a pair of socks, using this method is the Alacrity Socks pattern. Which is linked in the description box below the video.

Is it possible to do a Dutch heel turn in a toe up sock, I love the look of it. Thanks for an amazing tutorial

Great tutorial Denise. I did guess on a 60 stitch sock. So I was wondering if I knitted across 18 stitches to then start the decrease, knit 2 together, then slip one, knit 8 stitches on the other side, do the decrease, then turn, and continue. So is this correct? Thanks for any help. Take care. So glad I just found your channel.😊

That sounds right!!! I would put in a safety line then give it a try. If the numbers do not work then you can safely rip back.
