  • This video demonstrates the Dutch Heel turn for socks knit with a heel flap and gusset. An explanation is given for how to do the heel on any number of sts, and is demonstrated for an even number of stitches and an odd number. The result is compared to the more commonly used Round Heel, and the relative advantages and disadvantages are discussed, as well.

Brilliant as always. The Dutch heel was the one that I got started on when we made socks in sixth grade, and for many years I believed it was the only sock heel in the world. When I got old enough that knitting books from the library started to interest me (but before the knitting boom of the 00's had got off the ground), I came across an author who recommended a method where the right side gets one fewer stitch than the left, so that the last time you decrease is the left-side ssk and you're ready to go on to pick up gusset stitches. Does that sound familiar to anyone else in the world?
Alas, I've almost completely converted to toe-up socks with Fleegle heels when I knit vanilla socks for my personal use, square heels are too narrow for my feet. I do Dutch heels when I follow patterns that call for it, or if I'm making top-downs for someone with a more traditional mindset.

TY again ! Fit at ankle is a problem for me Looking at my sock for wear I see that a wider heal would benefit me ! Timely as knitting a new pair 😀

Enjoying your channel as always, looking forward to the sock KAL. My suggestion for a new video is a short tutorial for non-knitting recipients of wool socks: How to hand wash and block your socks. It needs to have soap for dirty socks. Maybe touch on the fact that machine wash for superwash is ok too, but for longevity of the sock, hand wash is best. I would love to include your video link for gift knitting my socks.

I learned a lot from this video. You were showing a reddish coloured sock at one point. I loved how there was ribbing in the gusset. Can you tell me which pattern that is?

You'll have to give me a time stamp where you saw that. The section that does a comparison between the Dutch heel and round heel shows a striped sock heel with red in it, but the gusset cannot be seen, and if it could, this particular sock has no ribbing in the gusset.

Awesome lesson. I was wondering...Couldn’t you have less stitches before and after the marker, say instead of 4 and 4, couldn’t you have 3 and 3 and work the same process?

A Dutch heel uses 1/3 of the sts remaining undecreased at the center. So it's not the *number* of sts, is the proportion. There are other heels that use similar constructions, but with different fractions of sts maintained at the center. I believe the strap heel maintains 1/2 the sts across the center, so that would give a similar end to the round heel, but with a very different beginning.

Ok, my question is probably really dumb you will think. But with the heel flap, of 24 stitches, and 24 rows, how can I start on the right side, my last row for the heel flap, was the right side, which was the S1 and K1. All I can think to do is eliminate that row 24, then start this row
