Sock Knitting: Picking up Heel Flap Stitches with a Garter Stitch Edge

  • Purls of Wisdom from the Bearded Purl Podcast, a Podcast about the fiber arts and other crafty shenanigans.
    Justin shows you the steps for how to pick up stitches on a heel flap with a garter stitch border. This method makes a really nice pickup edge for the heel flap as well as closing the corner stitches to avoid any gaps that may show up.
    Knitting a garter stitch edge to any heel flap is a great way to create a nice clean finish on each side. This allows for a very clear and straightforward spot to pickup each stitch on the heel flap edge through the purl bumps of the garter.
    Add this edge to any heel flap by taking the first and last three stitches of your heel flap and knitting them in garter stitch, while maintaining the pattern in the remaining stitches. Knit the heel turn as instructed.

      I agree, I love tutorials like this, very clear and concise! Thank you 👍🏻 I’m a newish knitter and I used heel flap and gusset for my first pair of socks, I’m now knitting a pair and am trying a German short row heel, not finished them yet so we shall see how they turn out. Thank you again, take care and stay safe x

    Have to agree: very helpful and your calm voice makes it so enjoyable to just watch and listen. What I do with magic loop is to form a triangle (top of foot, left side up to the middle of the heel, right side from the middle of the heel) - this way it makes it easier to count stitches, the problem you described when you put in the marker.

    Great video, Justin! You made closing that gap so simple! I’ve fussed about with different ways of doing it and have never been happy with it. This is perfect! I just did a garter edge for the first time in a while on a sock I’m knitting for Tim and one side looks very tidy, but the other is kind of loose on the garter stitches next to where I’ve picked up. Maybe I picked the wrong umbrella/smile... Ever onward! That’s what’s so fun about socks is always trying new techniques!

    You're an outstanding instructor. Thank you for sharing. You've addressed my concerns and have resolved them. Because of your "you-can-do-it" teaching method, I now have 40" ChiaoGoo 2mm needles, I'm knitting my socks magic loop style and love it. (The 9 inch hurt my hand and the 2 needles seemed too fussy which resulted in me avoiding sock knitting!) I am also using Woolens and Nosh yarn that you mentioned. I immediately ordered it. Michelle is awesome and the yarn is fabulous. Oh... and no more little holes on the sides of my socks - thanks to you. Thanks for making a difference in my fiber world. #thebeardedpurl #socksmadeeasy #woolensandnosh #greatinstructor #latetothesockknittingparty. ☺️

    This was a wonderful tutorial. Generally, I use a DPN to pick up the stitches and then just knit, with the magic loop needle, the stitches along the heel flap; across the heel turn; then, use the DPN to pick up the stitches on the other side of the heel flap.

  • @achimwasp
    @achimwasp Рік тому +1

    Thank you for the confirmation - I usually do it exactly like this. Except I do a k2tog on the hole-closing stitches on one side and an SSK on the other (and I turn them beforehand to lie "correctly" on the needles so everything is symmetrical ... I know that nobody will see the difference, but I KNOW it ...). If I'm being lazy, I make a straight selvedge and pick up the frontmost half of the stitches as Carlos' Arne showed, as it's much less fiddly. It looks different, but just as tidy. Now back to my two pairs of socks I'm working on - one of them a simple cable pattern but the other one two-color fair isle, which will probably drive me nuts and I fear they might end up a bit too tight even though I use 84 stitches instead of my usual 64.

    Thank you for sharing! Socks are also one of my favourite things to knit and I am a total sucker for self-striping sock yarn (we will not talk about how much I have in my stash 😉). I love a contrast heel, toe, and cuff (mini skein permitting). I find I tend to use a Fish Lips Kiss heel if I am doing a contrasting heel and an afterthought heel if I’m using stripes, but I have a high instep, so I do a mini gusset to improve the fit. I really enjoyed seeing your method for doing the pickup on the garter edge. Next time I knit a heel flap and gusset, I am going to give this a try. It looks great!

    Awesome tutorial!!! Currently working on my very first sample sock with a heel flap. I'm currently at the toe decrease and pass the heel flap and gusset. I will definitely give this a try with the next full pair of socks as I just love the way your socks look. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.

    Justin, thanks so much for this video. I'm in the middle of knitting my first Hermiones Every day sock and noticed that pattern had the garter edge at the heel flap which was something new to me. There were no specific instructions on how to pick up those edge stitches so I just winged it. Your video is so clear and I love the tip about closing the corner gaps. I'm sure my second sock will pass inspection of the sock- police, 😊 Thank You

    Great tutorial, Caleb! Been waiting for this one and I learned a lot. I still have one question. Is there anyway to make the two side of garter stitch look equal in width? With the slipped stitch heel I find it essentially looks like you knit 3 garter stitches on one side and 2 garter stitches on the other side. Hope I’m being clear. I’m guessing this wouldn’t happen with an eye of partridge heel? Anyway, do u know a way around this? Thanks again.😘

      @thebeardedpurlpodcast  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Gina! The actual pattern was written for eye of partridge but I adapted it for a slip stitch pattern. I feel like it looks pretty even on both sides. The instructions in the Hermione’s Everyday sock pattern have you makes the garter edge using purls on one edge and knots on the other - maybe that fixes it?

    Thanks for this video, they aren't a lot of tutorials about picking up stitches on heel flap with garter edge.
    I use almost the exact same technique. Only difference is I first pick up all my stitches on a DPN and then work them off the DPN, With the stitches on the DPN I can easily recount them to be sure I've picked the same number of stitches on each side.

      Well now THAT’S smart!! Funny story, when I recorded the video the first time I miscounted and had the wrong number. I was so annoyed so I ripped it out and had to start over 🤣🤣

    Thanks for doing this! I knit a pattern w/ the garter row edges, but skipped it as I wasn't sure what to pick up. I also like the heel flap & gusset, but don't have the problem of holes/gaps. I pick up both legs of the v & if I am worried about a gap, ktbl. But now I know I can try this too! Thank you.

    This is amazing. Exactly how I knit my socks except I've been slipping the first and last stitches and picking up the Vs. I'm now going to use this method instead. Picking up the garter bumps looks soooo much simpler and easier to see.

      I’m glad you liked it!! Someone suggested using a spare DPN or your magic loop needle to pick them all up at once - I’ve tried it since and it’s pretty brilliant!! Happy knitting ❤️🧦

    Justin, what a great tutorial! I recently learned how to knit a heel flap and gusset , slipping the first stitch of every row. After picking up the stitches on the first round I knit them through the back stitch. I will definitely try your method on my next pair of socks. Your method looks like it produces a neater join. Thank you.

    A very helpful tutorial. I just started knitting with the 3 garter stitches at each side of the heel flap following one of Nancy Wheeler's videos and thought I would see how others were picking up their stitches. I used a dark coloured yarn for my heels which made it a bit of a challenge but I made it through. Thanks again- Margaret of My Wonderful Knitting Life podcast.
