Thank you once again. I love your tutorials as you don’t just show how to do them you explain everything as to why you have to do it. Can’t wait for more. 🧶🧦
You're such an outstanding instructor - clear, concise, and...calming! Your tutorial is timely. I was just about to start my heel flap and will now do yours. THANK YOU! Discovering The Bearded Purl has been a delightful blessing. 💚
Thank you so much for this video, I appreciate your adding the math component because it will keep me honest while knitting my socks. It would be helpful for me to see another heel flap and turn video where you include reinforcement thread, yarn to create a more durable sock.
Thanks, Linda! The math keeps me honest too, otherwise I go rogue! I’ve never used my long to reinforce a heel, but I have some somewhere...where did I put it 🤔
I'm love this way to pick up the garter edge! I had been taught to just grab somewhere in the valleys. This way is so much neater. Ya so schmahrt. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank You so much for doing this tutorial. I had almost given up on socks. Your instructions are clear and concise. Your voice is very soothing and calm. It has taken the anxiety out of the process for me. I am going to get my yarn and needles and follow you from the beginning. You rock, Justin. 👍

Love your podcast, Justin. Your voice is very soothing and you explain things extremely well. Keep the videos coming! Hello to Caleb and have a wonderful week! 👍
Thank you Justin. I am trying the heel flap and turn for the first time, after watching your video I am feeling very confident, very clear instructions.
Thank you so very much. Your demonstration of this heel is amazing and so easy to follow, I also find your voice so soothing , it’s like being hypnotise in to doing it properly I love it thank you stay safe xxxxxxx
You hit another out of the park. Great instructions. I have a request. Can you and Caleb show us wearing your socks? 😁 Well I actually have a few requests. This is only one of many requests for you both LOL. Have a funtastic week ahead. -Brenda
Thanks, Diane! I’ve recorded a video of picking up the stitches for the gusset afterwards if that would be helpful! It’s listed in our videos if you want to check it out ❤️🧦
Thanks so much for this video! I’m excited to try the garter stitch edging. I find it interesting that you needed on one side and then pearl it on the other end. I would probably have just knit the first and last three stitches of each row. One way to do a heel flap for any number of stitches is to do this set up row. Knit to two stitches past middle, SSK knit one, Turn slip on p five, Purl two together, p 1. It’s easy to remember and you can adjust for the number of stitches your heel flap used. Same way you can start it on the P side also. I like to keep a marker in the middle of the heel flap so I can tell quickly if I’ve gone wrong.
Hi Justin Thank you that was brilliant, you are so good at teaching very clear and such a calm voice I would definitely love to see more tutorials from you. Take care and keep safe both of you, and look forward to seeing you soon. I am now going to try this on a sock I am attempting to knit 👵
Thanks very much for this series. I return to it over and over. I’m a convert to the garter edge heel flap. Also, your tip for closing the hole at the corner of the heel flap works the best of any method I’ve tried. It’s easy as well! I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. They’re just wonderful! xo
Loved this video. Very succinct instruction which I will refer back to in exploring my sock journey. Looking forward to future sock construction videos. Thank you.
Such a beautiful heel flap and turn! I'm then rows from my heel flap and ready to try this new technique! Can't wait! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and favorite technique. Have a great day.
Thank you, this was a nice refresher on turning the heel. I’m definitely going to be doing the garter ridge on my next pair of socks. You really are a natural at teaching.
Justin, thanks so much for this great tutorial. You have done an outstanding job of explaining the heel flap and turn. I have been knitting socks using the flap & turn for several years and I just now understand why it is called a heel ‘turn’. Makes so much sense the way you explained it. I’ve seen your socks with the garter edge on your podcasts, and hope to give it a go on my next pair. You’re a Master Teacher. ❤️🌹
Justin, thank you again for such a great tutorial. We all appreciate all of the behind the scenes prep for filming a video! Looking forward to more and also the ones that Caleb will be doing on weaving! Take care!
🙏 Thank you Justin! I am a little late to the sock party, but better late than never showing up. Loved ❤️ the video. In fact, I got so inspired I need to go find yarn in my stash so I can try this immediately. Looking forward to the next tutorial.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I'm making my 1st sock ever and this has been so very helpful to me. You are a fabulous instructor -not too fast and not too slow. Love all the details! Any Brioche in your future tutorials! LOL..
I’m so glad you’re finding it helpful and congrats on your first sock!!! They’re so fun to knit 😬 . I’ve actually never knit brioche but I want to learn, so...maybe!! ❤️🧦🧶
Many thanks for another great tutorial! I’d love to see a video on how you knit/flick style. I’ve seen a few videos, but I don’t get a good view of how the needle is held with the right hand (which fingers), etc.
Great tutorial. I’m 20 rows from the heel so I will try the garter stitch edge. BTW I finally mastered the German cast on....woohoo took me several tries. Have a great day
What a great tutorial. Thanks so much for taking the time to show us your technique. I used to do 'the easiest sock in the world' by Arne and Carlos which is German short rows. I like this method but am looking to expand my sock knitting repertoire. I would love to see more of what you do to make such beautiful socks.
I use 9” circulars and do the heel flap and gusset with that needle. I don’t change to magic loop until the toe decreases. Thanks for the video, I love the garter stitches on each side!
Oh wow, that’s awesome! I could never get my clunky hands wrapped around a 9 inch circular comfortably. I’m so impressed when I see people knitting with them ❤️🧦
Omg thank you so much!!!! I am still a beginner but this was well explained and gave me the desired results!!! I have been on the hunt for my go-to heel pattern and this is now it. I haven’t liked the shape of any of the hourglass heel approaches but did like the gusset technique. I just had trouble with my stitch pick up. But this edge gives you a guide of where to place them and easy to repeat and get the exact same number of stitches on the opposite side of the gusset. Wew!! Now I won’t dread the heel of my socks. Thank you!!
Hi there! I recorded a video picking up the stitches a few weeks ago. Check out our the videos in our Purls of Wisdom playlist. If you don’t find it I can send you a link ❤️🧦
Your ability to knit and explain your process is great.. you give the rational of why along with your tips along the way. Which makes you a very effective teacher. Very much enjoyed your current series of socks and looking forward to your toe technique. If you would like to tackle brioche knitting or perhaps with your experience with sweaters....I know you mentioned you have knit 3 sweaters which might be very helpful for those of us who are hesitant to make sweaters you learn tidbits of information....what ever you decide to teach I plan on watching thanks.
Aw thanks so much, Renee! I’ve found other people’s videos to be so helpful, and I’m glad you’re enjoying these! I’d love to think about sweater videos, and I do want to knit a brioche pattern soon! ❤️🧶
Love your voice, it’s one that can be listened to all day. Just one observation- by knitting the first 3 stitches when on the wrong side, and changing colour at the same time, the resultant purl bumps on the right side consist of both colours, which is avoidable if you do one row purl. The far edge is purled anyway
Hi Debbie! We’ve posted a video for my favorite cast on/starting the cuff, and another video to show picking up the stitches along the garter edge of the heel flap. I’ve recorded a video of the anatomical toe I use that we’ll get posted in the next 2 weeks! ❤️🧦
I just watched your tutorial, you’re awesome! 🤗 I’ve started to make my sl sts on the ws, so you don’t need to purl so much! Try it, it might blow your mind! 🤪😇
You have probably answered this a bazillion times so I apologize ahead of time for the repetition. Since I have 32 stitches for my heel flap, how many stitches should I knit/purl for the heel turn? I reviewed comments and show notes but didn’t see this addressed. Thanks so much.
Hi there! I didn’t provide the details for a 32 stitch heel flap, but here’s the setup: Row 1: purl 17, p2tog, purl 1, turn Row 2: slip 1, knit 7, ssk, knit 1 turn If you’re starting in a right side row instead just use knit stitches in row 1 and purl stitches in row 2. If you need more detail, feel free to email me @ TheBeardedPurl@gmail.com! ❤️🧦
Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us. Because of you, I'm able to do the gusset without that dreaded hole. Thank you❤! I will be using this technique for my current pair of socks. I usually use the EOP!!
Your videos are excellent and love the color of the yarn you are using. Please make more videos - have you made one for the toe yet? BTW, I love knitting socks with Addi flexiflip needles.
Thanks, Shirley!! Michele said she’s putting more Swizzle in her shop this weekend and I’m super tempted to by more! 😬 I’ve recorded the video for the toe and we’ll plan to have it posted in the next 2 weeks! ❤️❤️🧦
Thank you so much for showing this video. I'm new to sock knitting and get afraid when it's time to make the heel. I also have trouble with the sizes. My gauge isn't figured out yet and I'm a tight knitter so I get frustrated and stop lol. I want to follow this video of yours and try a heel again. I assume you have the part of this video that continues to finish when you pick up sts. and connect the heel flap?? I went and looked and do see a video continuing the heel flap on. I will watch that next. Thanks again. :)
Hang in there, Sharon! It’s taken me years to find my perfect formula for socks, and I still tinker with needle size and stitch count! Let me know if I can help in any way ❤️🧦
Love your videos! You are really good at explaining what you are doing and why you’re doing it. Also your voice is calming and soothing. Do you have your own written sock pattern available for purchase?
I love your tutorials, very clear and precise. 😊 I figured out why I'm not interested in socks, it's because I don't wear them, unless it's a heavier sock, because I only wear them as slippers.. If I were to find a good pattern that uses aran or maybe even DK, I might just do it..🤔
I love the videos so much. I have heard of the "vanilla is the new black" heel and am thinking of trying it in my next socks. Maybe that is a different heel you could show?
Thank you for these excellent tutorials. I watched so many videos in german and english (I'm german), but yours are the best. There are just some little differences that will do the trick. But I have a question : when do you start your decreases for the gusset and how often do you do this? Looking forward to your special toe. Greetings from Germany! 💙
Hi Tanja! I usually knit one round after I pick up all of the gusset stitches and then begin my decreases. I decrease 2 stitches (1 on each side) every other round until I get back to my original stitch count. Hope that helps ❤️🧦
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast yeah, thanks you. ❤️ I do it exactly like you do. But my gusset is so tiny. I wanted to check, if I did something wrong. But I think it depends on the number of rows for the heel. I will check it out. 👍😊🧦❤️ Happy knitting!
Thank you love the video . Can you show us your special toe and rib sock pretty please . I do a 64 stitch sock for my heel turn ( sl1 k16 ssk k1 turn ) ( sl1 p3 p2tog p1 turn) . I also make the flap longer to fit my heel
Hi Melanie! I’m writing the pattern now, and I’ve recorded a video for the toe that we’ll get posted in the next 2 weeks! And sounds like your heel turn is pretty comparable to mine! ❤️🧦
Is there some kind of ratio to know how many to purl across and knit back when you are turning the heel? If I make sox on 64 stitches, how do I figure out "the number?"
Hi Gretchen! There are some formulas out there that you can adapt to any stitch count, but I have the numbers for a 64 stitch sock, if you are starting with 1/2 of the stitches, or 32: Purl 19, P2 tog, Purl 1, turn Knit 7, SSK, Knit 1, turn. From there you can follow along. If you want more detailed instructions feel free to email me at TheBeardedPurl@gmail.com! ❤️🧦
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast on the second row, or Knit row, of the heal turn don’t you slip one stitch purl wise before you start knitting across till you SSK, K1?
Bahahaha thanks! Funny story - the new vanity is officially 100% completed, but this is just a roll up background I can set on the kitchen table 😬. Don’t tell anyone! (However, I do have the cutout from the vanity that might appear in future videos if it’s big enough 🤓)
Justin, have you ever considered slipping stitches on the purl row instead of the knit row? It makes things go just a bit faster because most people purl slower and you're only purling half of the stitches. Thanks for the video.
Hi Becky! I can give you the stitch counts I use if you let me know how many stitches are on your sock. I have the math handy for 56, 64 and 72 stitches, and there are formulas online for other numbers.
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast Justin, Becky, don’t mind me just poking in here...can you point me to where those are, or maybe a link? I feel lazy for asking, so feel free to tell me to do my own homework!
Thanks for showing your method for making the Heel Flap. The funny part is I am currently knitting the socks that you mentioned, Hermoine's Everyday Sock. I'm knitting them for a Sock KAL at a local yarn shop.
Oh how fun!! I’ve never knit the sock pattern but Caleb has. I feel in love with the heel and use it as written in the eye of partridge, and in a traditional slip stitch pattern! ❤️🧦
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast I did the eye of partridge just for something new to learn. I love the heel as well. I first noticed it when you were showing socks on your podcast with Caleb. Then got excited when you made a tutorial of the heel, at that point I was not ready for the heel in the pattern so it was a good overview. The heel came out perfect. I have a page on Ravelry if you want to see them.
Justin, I just found your tutorial and I tried it…..WOW!!! It is easy, fun and looks great! Not a hole in sight either. I can’t thank you enough. It’s the best looking sock I have made so far! I now have my “go to” for socks. 🧡🧶🧡

Thanks so much! I’m actually writing my first pattern now and should have it ready for test knitting in early April! We’ll keep you posted ❤️🧦
I love your tutorials, very clear and precise. 😊
I figured out why I'm not interested in socks, it's because I don't wear them, unless it's a heavier sock, because I only wear them as slippers..
If I were to find a good pattern that uses aran or maybe even DK, I might just do it..🤔
Hi Patti! We really like the Spree Sock by Kemper Ray and the Rye Socks by Tin Can Knits. They’re both DK patterns and knit up super quickly! ❤️🧦

Thank you so much!!
I'll check them out!
How do you know how far over to go to start heel turn
I love the videos so much.
I have heard of the "vanilla is the new black" heel and am thinking of trying it in my next socks. Maybe that is a different heel you could show?
I’d never heard of it but totally looked it up! It looks very interesting! I’ll try and work something into the queue ❤️🧦
There are some formulas out there that you can adapt to any stitch count, but I have the numbers for a 64 stitch sock, if you are starting with 1/2 of the stitches, or 32:
Purl 19, P2 tog, Purl 1, turn
Knit 7, SSK, Knit 1, turn.
From there you can follow along. If you want more detailed instructions feel free to email me at TheBeardedPurl@gmail.com! ❤️🧦
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast Justin, thanks so much! I’m loving the tutorials btw. Everyone is right-very calming!
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast on the second row, or Knit row, of the heal turn don’t you slip one stitch purl wise before you start knitting across till you SSK, K1?
PS - I love your marble counter. Is that the new one?
Bahahaha thanks! Funny story - the new vanity is officially 100% completed, but this is just a roll up background I can set on the kitchen table 😬. Don’t tell anyone! (However, I do have the cutout from the vanity that might appear in future videos if it’s big enough 🤓)
Justin, have you ever considered slipping stitches on the purl row instead of the knit row? It makes things go just a bit faster because most people purl slower and you're only purling half of the stitches. Thanks for the video.
Hi Sandy! I guess I’ve never thought about it but it’s kind of brilliant! I’ll have to give it a try on my next sock! ❤️🧦
You did 21. Can you tell me how many stitches you began with? Thank you. Enjoying it.
I think he said 72
Hi Becky! I can give you the stitch counts I use if you let me know how many stitches are on your sock. I have the math handy for 56, 64 and 72 stitches, and there are formulas online for other numbers.
Thank you. I just saw your notes. I do 72 then after heel go to 68. You guys are great! I knit a lot for my husband so I love seeing what you knit.
@@thebeardedpurlpodcast Justin, Becky, don’t mind me just poking in here...can you point me to where those are, or maybe a link? I feel lazy for asking, so feel free to tell me to do my own homework!
How many stitches do I knit for the heel turn if the total stitches are 30.
Very nice video. What career to you have? Teacher?
Thanks, Carole!! I lead a Field Support team for a veterinary diagnostic company, but I did spend almost 5 years in our training organization! ❤️❤️🧦
Are you slipping purl-wise?
Yes!! ❤️🧦🧶
Is this by any chance written out?
Yes!! We’ll check them out ❤️
21 изнаночная, потом 2 изнаночные вместе и потом еще 1 изнаночная? Сколько петель у вас осталось на спице????
At 14:02 how did you figure to do the 21 stitches and i have a different number of cast on stitches so how would I know how many to do
Justin, I just found your tutorial and I tried it…..WOW!!! It is easy, fun and looks great! Not a hole in sight either. I can’t thank you enough. It’s the best looking sock I have made so far! I now have my “go to” for socks. 🧡🧶🧡
