OMG DENISE! The Kitchner finally clicked!!! YIPPY. I'm going to finish upside socks I was working on. Thank you for your kindness and patience in teaching sock knitting🙂.
Excellent! I’ll have to try this on a sample sock-but with single color yarn for first try. Will also use Patty’s decrease, looks a little quicker. 🙏🏾👍🏾👏🏾
Once again…Denise has hit a home run! You answered every question I consider when knitting afterthought heels. This video is going to be in my library forever! Thanks Denise.😊
You are simply the best. I can now knit socks and after years of struggle that feels like a miracle. I honestly swear you could teach me how to build rockets 😂. Thanks for everything you do!
So it didn't take me long to get over intarsia and start my after thought heel socks. Needed socks on my needles! After I clipped the yarn and was half way through the controlled unraveling, I noticed my needles were on the wrong row! Took a break by listening to your magical voice, inhaled deeply, rounded up a lot of removable stitch makers and got back on track. WHEW! Joined in my new yarn ASAP and now I happily on my way to decreasing. Many thanks Denise.
Many thanks for another wonderful tutorial! Just finished a pair of toe up socks with intarsia so I'll need a bit of a breather before I tackle after thought heels. Your soothing voice will definitely help guide me through any rough spots.
Denise I just love how you teach!!!! You are such an awesome teacher I have learned so much from you. Thank you so much for doing this tutorial you rock so much..
You are such a sweetheart Denise to show a different way to do after thought heel You take your time and go through all the process I have learned so much in all your tutorials Thank you soooo much giving us so much info 😊 💝💝😊😊
Fantastic tutorial! Your voice is so nice to listen to. Leaving 2 intact stitches at each end is genius. I’ve only done one afterthought heel with waste yarn and I really didn’t like how “gappy” the sides looked even when picking up extra stitches. No more waste yarn for me, I look forward to trying this. I’ll check out the decrease stitch video you recommended too. Thanks!
Great tutorial. I haven't knit in years & decided to give your video a watch as a refresher. I knit afterthought heels as you do with 2 differences: I complete the tube & I use a size 0/2mm needle to pick up stitches. It's very easy to slip the smaller needle thru each stitch - you just have to remember to knit the first row with the correct needle size (yes, I have forgotten a time or 2).
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial. And yes, that is a great tip. one of the reasons I don’t do it is because my memory is a sieve and I know I will forget to change back to the original needle, so I don’t even bother to share the idea because I know I’m not the only one who will forget.
Thelma writes: Denise, what a beautiful, beautiful tutorial you have presented here on doing the afterthought heal without a waste yarn. Your sweet calming voice, your patience makes the whole process far from daunting. I like your motto, "take your time, no race". How appropriate is that, Denise. I have not done the afterthought heel using the snipping yarn method, but after watching your tutorial, I might do this method next time I knit a pair of socks. Thank you for sharing your expertise and walking us through the method so patiently. Bless you Denise.❤❤
I love how unhurried you are in this. Your style of video works so much better for me. I've been knitting socks on-off for at least 5 years and just had several tubes cranked for me, this helps so much, thank you for all your time and effort! I'll recommend this vid and your channel to friends and hope you get enough views to make a difference!
I love your videos. I knit the first sock of this pair with a waste yarn afterthought heel. I decided to go rogue and try the 'cutting in' method for the second sock. My sock is toe-up, but I don’t think that it makes a difference. Your voice just instills confidence. I can absolutely see you helping a novice pilot land her plane.
Just finished my first afterthought heel, following your tutorial. Trying to figure out how I could attach photo so you could see. I think it was just about perfect! Now to do another one just as good to match! I was juggling 4 dpns and two circulars, with markers down the side. Felt like I was all thumbs, but it worked! Thanks for the clear instructions!!
Hi Denise, thank you for your response, I will give it a try. In the meantime, I had successfully knitted a sample sock using the afterthought heal method. Once you have understood the instructions, it is not as daunting as it sounds. Thank you responding, Denise. As always, love listening to your voice while you knit. Bless you. Thelma.
Oh Denise…what an excellent and helpful video! 🥰 Nice clear close ups. I have several gorgeous self-striping yarns that have been sitting because I was afraid of this technique. Your calming voice makes me know that “yes” I can do this!! Thank you, thank you.
I love that you share your learnings with us to encourage the best knitting possible. I tried to do the ssk with your video and with Patty Lyons’ video but can’t quite see where to draw the yarn through. Can you show a close up of which space you are going through as you make the two stitches into one? Can’t wait to see that video clip!
Another amazing tutorial Denise! I’ve been afraid to do an afterthought heel but you make it look so easy. I’m in the middle of a pair of socks for my husband and they are going to have my first ever afterthought heel! Thank you! ❤❤
Excellent!! I wasn’t going to even consider this until you mentioned knitting more rounds to accommodate a high arch or a “chubbier” foot. (I know you didn’t say that…). Next sock I make gets this heel. Thank you, you’re such a good teacher.
This is INCREDIBLE!! Thank you so much, I’m going to go for it now having been too scared for a long time. I’m new to your channel but LOVE your videos thank you! ❤
as always, an amazing tutorial!! You are such a great teacher. I think I am going to bite the bullet and finally give the afterthought heel a try. Again, thank you!!!
Thank you Denise! I have been wanting to do a afterthought heel but have been to scared. I will definitely be trying an afterthought heel. Thank you for taking time to make your videos.
What a terrific tutorial. I’ve avoided learning to do an afterthought heel because of the scary “snip.” With my high instep it’s been difficult to get a good fit across my instep. Fingers crossed this will solve that fitting problem. Thanks you!
What a great tutorial! Thank you. Excited to start my next pair of socks! If I am doing the heel in a different color I assume I just use the new yarn on the first row?
This is a great tutorial! I have been afraid to do the afterthought heel but, as someone told me "just do it"! With this video, I think I can do it. I will be doing a sample sock first. I usually do toe up socks and am wondering if this method translates doing toe up? I think it does, but am wondering if you have done this with toe up socks? Thanks so much for your videos - I have learned so much from you.
Hi Denise! I love your videos and think you are an excellent teacher. I think your “real time” knitting is extremely helpful. I’m excited to try the after thought heel, but have a question. How far (as in length) do you knit the tube before you stop and insert the after thought heel? I’ve read the comments where knitters have knitted the entire tube length and then inserted the heel. I’m interested in inserting the heel before I’ve completed the length of the heel. Thank you for your help and your videos! Have a great Sunday!
My first response is WHY NOT! -An afterthought heel in self striping creates a beautiful "bulls eye" effect. -Heels tend to wear out first so the main function of an after thought heel is, it can be replaced!! -Most of us don't have knitting machines. And most important, cutting into your knitting is a great metaphor for life....DO ONE THING A DAY THAT SCARES YOU.
I just started making afterthought heels. I had been using the German Snort row, which I still like. I’ve only used variegated yarns for the afterthought, and I am pretty sure I won’t be able to try self-striping: I can’t just “measure and cut”; the heel has to be on the same round on both socks. It’s just me. I would have to be extrEMEly careful to match stripes, and still might not get a heel round to cut at a place in the striping that I like.
For your own personal preference on high arch, do you like the afterthought heel or the heel on your soxploration pattern. That heel fits so well and I have never tried an afterthought heel. Thank you for your tutorial.
Great tutorial! I didn't see the link to Patty Lyons' special left leaning decrease ... where can I find the information? I can't wait to do an afterthought heel using all of your helpful tips!
Hello Denise, I am so glad you made that video, thank you. I do need however a little pointer here. I have sock tubes and did already a cuff and a toe. But I have no clue as to where I have to place my heel to get the perfect fit. How do you suggest I should go about it? I am afraid I am a relatively new sock knitter…
I do cover this briefly when I talk about where to cut. You will have to be very careful and trace back on the edge stitches to the point in your sock tube when the leg is as long as you want it to be. So count from the cuff down and stop when the leg is long enough. then cut the heel in.
I must have a very high arch! I use the Yarn Harlot's decrease pattern for the toe but use it on the heel instead. I have to start with 6 plain r, instead of her 5. I do 6 plain r, decrease R, 5 plain, decrease r, 4 then dec, 3 then dec, 2 then dec, 1 then dec, then dec every r to the same number as I started for the toe (I do toe up socks). It is rounder and fits better for me. Trial and edit, right? 🤣
I have only made tube socks because I have knitted down too far before I was supposed to start heel. I am sorry if you have already mentioned this but where would you cut for the heel with the whole tube sock has been knitted? Cannot wait to turn my tubes into grown up socks

@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast thank you. The ability to replace an afterthought heel makes perfect sense. Lol I need a way to replace the sock at the ball of my foot. I wear sandals year round so heels are usually ok.
I continue to love your videos. After 60 yrs of knitting I still learn things. Yeah
OMG DENISE! The Kitchner finally clicked!!! YIPPY. I'm going to finish upside socks I was working on. Thank you for your kindness and patience in teaching sock knitting🙂.

Great tutorial! My question: why would you want to do any afterthought heel?
My first response is WHY NOT!
-An afterthought heel in self striping creates a beautiful "bulls eye" effect.
-Heels tend to wear out first so the main function of an after thought heel is, it can be replaced!!
