So you literally don’t need to send anything physically to dvla like your licence or v5 documents it’s all done online ?

Other plate sellers are available; you don't have to go through DVLA at the purchase stage.

Can you tell us how to retain a number plate already assigned to a car
Visit the DVLA website and follow the link for removing a private registration. The original will be automatically assigned and the private reg put on retention for later use, or you can assign it to another vehicle
What’s the process for putting your old plates back on? Is it possible to swap in between the old and new every few months? Great video very informative 👍🏼

I've not done it that way around before but I think you can put the personalised registration on retention (Meaning you keep the rights to the reg number) , and your original reg is reassigned back to the vehicle by the DVLA. You'd probably have to pay an assignment fee everytime you swapped so wouldn't be advisable

The original number goes back to the DVLA but is usually reserved to go back on the car in the future
How much grace time do you have between receiving your new V5C and getting the new plates installed? Eg if getting a garage to make and install them, you’ll need to drive to the garage with your “old plates” even though DVLA have swapped to the new on their system?
Not sure exactly. It just says to swap as soon as possible. I'd guess at a couple of weeks to a month

Great video! Might be a silly question but do the registration plates get sent to you? Or do you need to get them made somewhere? If so how long does this take? :)

Not a silly question at all, but no you don't get the plates sent to you, you have to purchase them yourself either using your new V5 document automatically sent by the DVLA when the new registration is registered, or by downloading the certificate of entitlement (I think thats covered in this video?) take either to a decent auto parts store and they should be able to make them while you wait.

Not exactly sure, it says as soon as possible, but would have thought there will be a couple of weeks overlap to allow for the making of the new plates

Thanks for watching! No further or hidden fees if you buy from the DVLA. The price you pay includes all transfer fees to assign it to your vehicle

Simon Alvey yeh if the plate is already on a car then you’ll have to pay £80 to transfer to another car or to put the plate on retention
Great video. One question from me, I've just purchased the car and the V5 is not in my name yet. Do I wait for the V5 to come in my name before I am able to transfer my plates? I've purchased the car and new plates just yesterday. Thanks

I am a Little Bit surprised to See, that in the UK you must pay 399 GBP for a personalized number plate. In Germany you can get it for 12,80 €. The only thing is, that you need to stick at your hometown initials. Such as „VAI“ for Vaihingen, and then you can choose XK50... and that‘s it. My number plate therefor is: VAI - XK 50. for My Jaguar XK5.0 convertible
That's one of the cheaper ones! £250 the minimum, but the sky is the limit for some prices
This is the UK, we are charged high for everything we possibly can be.
How do people get super specific ones, I've seen plates which match no style shown here, where do people get those?
With a lot of luck and in most cases, money! Check out the DVLA site for the options available. Fewer letters and numbers command higher prices

Someone may have asked this already but how long does it take for them to do this all?
Should be less than a couple of weeks depending on how busy they are. But normally within a few days
is the Nation badge (e.g UK badge and letters) compulsory or compulsory if you travel out of UK. I mean i dont intend to add Nation badge to my custom plates
We have to display a UK sticker for travelling outside of the UK, but doesn't have to be on the plate

Question, as soon as you go through the process of letting the DVLA know about the new plates, can you no longer drive on the old ones?
There is a cross over period, not entirely sure how long though, They say to put on the new plates as soon as possible, but they obviously allow time for the V5 to arrive and you getting new plates made. I cheated a bit and had standard looking 'show plates' made on ebay. So I had them ready to go on. I'd estimate there will be a few weeks where you can still drive on the old plates
@@MovesLikeJaguar how does that work with the insurance company though? Reason I asked is because I planned on switching them over online, driving to get them made and fitted next day then when I get home call the insurance.
I'd notify insurance once the new plates are fitted.

The DVLA do not issue the actual plate. You have to visit an auto parts store with either the new V5 or the downloadable certificate shown in the video, who can then make you the plate hopefully while you wait

I actually had mine fitted to, I also have a Jaguar XK, its been 2 days since I have had the permission, I noticed they have changed the MOT details to this plate but the Road Tax still has the old Reg, will that change too?
Road tax is controlled by DVLA also, you don't have to do anything further

You can't always have exactly what you want.
One question, I would like to buy a number plate but it seems to be a normal non-personalised registered number plate used on someones car which is still running to this date. Is it possible for me buying this number plate from them?
Yes it would be possible. The owner would have to use the DVLA website to put the registration number on retention, which he then could sell to you

If you choose not to retain the number, the original is taken back by the DVLA and usually reserved to reinstate on the vehicle if or when the vehicle is sold in the future

One more question. So why is it not available to completely buy your own words no matter the cost. I.e why can't I have my name N N A M D I or N N 4 M D I if I am ready to pay for it, instead of only available permutations and formats

I think there's an option if you're buying a plate for someone else so it'll be under their name
