    I’m so confused, your video is helpful but I still can’t make sense of it all in my mind!
    We bought a new vehicle a month ago, it’s currently sitting on our drive - by new it’s not actually new, but a 21 plate. I am selling my car (that has my private plate) so do I have to pay retention on that for £80, then pay another retention of £80 on the current reg plate on our new vehicle so I can put my private plate onto that one? Thanks in advance, this is pickling my brain 😂

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  10 місяців тому

      No, you only pay once. Once paid that is it. You can apply to put it onto your new car only after the change of ownership to your new car shows you on its V5. David 👍

    Hello, could you help me out please?
    I’m going to be selling my car privately and I want to take my private plate off,
    So my first step would be to pay £80 and take off my private number plates? Which then the original number plates will be put back on
    Then what should I do with the V5 document, because it will have my private number plate?
    Or am I able to still sell the car to the new owner with the V5 document and fill out the green and then they can apply for a new V5?? I’m not sure how this works! :)
    Thankyou for your time

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  3 роки тому +2

      The V5 becomes obsolete after you retain the number. DVLA will inform you of this. It is to be destroyed. Before you do this make a copy of it.
      It’s useless and has to be destroyed.
      You will receive a new replacement V5 in your name showing the number replacing your private number. At present the turnaround is 5 working days after completing the retention.

    Hi David this vid is a gem :) I recently bought a cherished number plate from a company the number plate has transferred into my current reg number by DVLA and I may get the v5 in a few days I wondered why I don't have a V750 or Retention Certificate watching this vid solved it as I should only have one if I want to keep it in future car purchase or if I decide to sell it, please correct me if I got this wrong :)

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  3 роки тому +1

      Your correct as the number has been transferred onto your vehicle. Going forwards if when you sell or exchange the vehicle you wish to retain the number you will have to place it onto retention. You will then have a retention certificate. David

    Hi, I'm just thinking about getting a personal number plate as the one I have in mind isn't too expensive, However with the new UK reg plates my car must be newer than 2018 to apply it, Am I able to buy the plate hopefully sometime soon so that it doesn't then become unavailable and just hold it until I eventually get a new car? Is there any extra money that I would need to be paying in order to keep it reserved as I don't intend to be buying a new car anytime soon.

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  8 місяців тому

      Buying a license is what you are doing. Allowing you use of the plate. You don’t actually own the plate as such. Not many people realise this point.
      Anyway back to your question. Once you have purchased the right to use or hold in your case no other fees are payable for up to 10 years. That is you have up to 10 years to assign the plate to your vehicle.

  • @ByWelly

    Hi there, thank you for making this video. I have a question, when I add my private reg to the car, what happens to the car's original plate? Do I need to place it on retention? As when I want to sell the car I'd want to sell it with its original plate

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  6 місяців тому

      The original reg is usually held by the dvla at you putting on your private number. When you sell the car you retain your private number and the car usually gets back the original number. So keep the plates somewhere safe to potentially put them back on. At application the dvla retain the original number in the process.

  • @TH4SH
    @TH4SH 4 місяці тому +1

    Hi mate, if i am planning to buy a personalised private numberplate from DVLA, (I've checked and the cost includes a DVLA 80 pound fee) does this mean i essentially have my new private number plate in retention ready to be put on a car? And after I assign my personalised car plate onto my car essentially switching the default plate with my personalised plate, do I still legally have rights to that default/factory plate that was intially on my car from factory. The reason why I am asking is when the time comes when I sell the car would I be able to switch the plates back to the ones I had got with the car (default plate) after doing the assign a plate on the DVLA website online back to the factory plates and give the future owner of the vehicle the default plate and keep my personal plate (saying I then apply for a retention v778 and assign it onto my future car)

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  4 місяці тому

      Yes you have a plate ready to assign to a vehicle registered in the name of the person listed on the V5. You cannot simply put the plate onto a vehicle that isn’t in your name. The vehicle has to be in your name.
      You have no right to the original plate when you reverse the plate change. However after retaining your plate you will be told what plate to put onto the vehicle. Normally it is the plate that you took off but you have no right to it.

      It’s better you apply to retain the number and have the replacement V5 before concluding the sale. Currently if you applied tonight online your V5 might get to you by Thursday or Friday.

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  Рік тому +1

      It’s advisable as most buyers will not accept paying in full until you have it. Legally the buyer isn’t able to retax the car until you have handed over the V5 or at least shared the document reference number from the v5C/2.

    Thanks for your guidance, can the retention be done on the day we sell, pick up the new car and v5 given to garage , or does the retention have to be done before going to garage and new v5 issued with previous number plate .
    Kind Regards

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  4 роки тому +5

      Mark Ruston It can all be done on the day. However you do get a period of grace to fit the replacement plates. In all probability it will go back on its original number. It remains taxed until the replacement V5 displaying the new number arrives back to you. Once back either you or the dealer fills out online the YELLOW potion online. The tab is inside the dvla’s site. After completing this it’s becomes untaxed. The original V5 is finished once you complete the retention by the way. It’s important you hand the replacement one to the garage. Dvla advise you destroy the original V5. It’s up to you I’d keep it until the replacement arrives.

      That will very much depend on the dealer. They may insist on the V5 so no. Or they may accept the exchange but hold a security of say £500 that you bring in the V5. They may like myself simply trust you to bring in the V5 once you receive it. David

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  4 роки тому

      Your welcome. My business is retail sales of vehicles which over the twenty five years includes helping buyers retain their plate. There are many people who offer a service to get you the sale of a plate that you own. You can sell the plate yourself and the retention certificate can be transferred to the buyer. Simply follow the certificate. I would say that you maybe better to have a specialist form handle the sale. And they will possibly have a better chance of doing so and you make a better value even.

      Once only. If by a new car you mean brand new then yes you can transfer. If you have retained the number. If you mean a used car new to you then no you can’t. The V5 needs to be in your name before you can transfer over.

    • @CheshireCars

      Yes mot and taxed. Transfer is not the same as retention. Transfer is moving/transferring a plate onto another vehicle. Retaining a plate is removing a plate from a vehicle but not applying directly to another vehicle. Retaining the right to use the number at a later time. Currently 10 years.

Unfortunately the DVLA states the vehicles must be able to move under its own steam to allow retention. The bike is in the process of being restored so won't move on it's own and the DVLA seem to want to get their mitts on the reg. Kind regards

      This is a copy from Google, we are car dealers so the video is offered as a helpful information we are not experts rather we deal occasionally with helping our clients with retention's of their numbers. While the car you're taking the private plate from doesn't need to have an MOT, it must be able to move under its own power, and must have been taxed or been SORN'd for the last five years. The DVLA may also need to inspect your car before approving or turning down your application.

      Not having the original plates is not a problem. Simply do the retention which will generate paperwork authorising you to have the original number (paperwork issued) to get plates made.
      You can drive the car still with the private plate on without breaking any law allowing you to get new plates made up. Ensure you do this after you print off the authorisation papers. Do not delay. Then once you have made them and applied them inform your insurer.

Can I still sell my car to the buyer on Saturday as I know new V5 and retention document may take weeks to come or am I not allowed to sell?

    • @CheshireCars
      @CheshireCars  Рік тому

      Lexi You can sell the car without the V5. If you retain online (link below the video,) then the turnaround can be as little as 5 days for the V5 to arrive. However the buyer may prefer to be in receipt of the V5? You can go online to change into the buyers details before then handing over the V5C/2 or green slip. Once you change owner details online it automatically cancels and refunds the road tax. So the buyer will use the green slip to re-tax the car.
