It's Electric: Lars x Metallica Revisit Master of Puppets

- As the host of his very own weekly Beats 1 online show It’s Electric! on Apple Music, Lars celebrates the reissue of Master of Puppets with two upcoming very special shows with some very notable guests. The two-part series was recorded at the band’s most recent European tour stop in Antwerp, Belgium and Lars welcomes back to the show James, Kirk and Rob to cover all things …Puppets, discussing the first riffs recorded on a Fostex to James’ lyrical influences with many, many more stories in between. Traveling from places far and wide, Lars is also joined by the album’s co-producer and engineer Flemming Rasmussen and mixer Michael Wagener for their tales from Sweet Silence Studio in Copenhagen.
Part One of the conversation is available on demand to Apple Music subscribers: apple.co/_ItsElectricAOD
Part Two of the conversation will air on Sunday, November 19th at 3 PM LA/6 PM NYC/11 PM LDN. Listen live for free. Otherwise, Apple Music subscribers can listen to the show on demand: apple.co/beats1onair
This is about 2 hours too short.
Part 2 Sunday it says.
@Brian Nichols: I think this was just a short version. The long version can be downloaded at the link above. Same with the second part. They'll probably put up a short version/teaser, while you can download the whole stuff on the apple page (and maybe will have to pay for it).
Yesss
This is about 13 minutes too long.
Anyone got a cracked version of the full interview? Not gonna spend $10 for an hour-long interview.
Even when not singing, James`s vocal quality sounds awesome.
oh yeah, he opens his mouth and it just feels awesome
One of my favorite voices ever❤️
And Lars is the opposite, the man's voice drives me insane!
Imagine James starting a podcast interviewing not only metal musicians but all the artists from all generations.
"Let's revisit Master of Puppets"
Robert: "Am I a joke to you?"
Exactly dude. I kind of feel bad for him... they left him in the dark
Josh Thornton well he didn’t contribute at all to the album because he wasn’t in the band so he couldn’t say much. Not his fault and not the rest of their faults either. I’m sure he enjoyed listening to them reminisce.
Yes.
@@txhellrazor4765 If I were the 3rd bassist in Metallica,I'd shut up,and listen as well
David Drouant still hoping I can be the 4th. Even if just for one show. Even if that show was in private and no one ever heard it or knew
12:54 James’ smile here is perfect. It shows that he appreciates Robert, and that he is grateful to know him. Because Even though he still misses Cliff, and playing live with Jason, Robert is still a friend, bandmate, and more than all, family. And it Also shows that he likes that Even though Robert wasn’t there, he still talks about his bands record, and that is exactly what Cliff would have wanted, for metallica to be one big, happy family.
Same with Lars’ stare at 13:03
My only criticism: it's too short! I could listen to these guys riffing about the old days for HOURS.
Riffing xD
Same here.
Right! They did something similar like this, but the subject matter was And justice for all. It's about an hour and a half long, done in black and white. But if you're bored and wanna watch something cool, look up "Hypnotizing Power".
Yeah man I hear you.
Yeah it was like a podcast style. Was bad ass. I want more of this.
I wish they told more about the origins of songs and riffs. I don't know about you, but I love this stuff.
Andriy Vasylenko nice to see you here lol
Hi frrriend
Andriy Vasylenko ANDRIY! Big fan
when is the next video?
Hi Frrrriend! :v
Can I say that Lars is a pretty good interviewer
yep, I´ve seen all his it´s electric interviews and he did a pretty good job, I´d say the same about Nikki Sixx on his radio program, I enjoyed a lot listening both musicians being fans of other musicians and having a good time with them...
He’s always been the conductor of the band.
@@jdmitchell6995 Lars has a talent for that i think alot of things he says in the studio while they record is good things and it's just like he wants to get in everything in the song so it all kind of fits well together he doesn't cut away much he just tries to bake all of it into the song.
I agree.
Oh yeah every episode of Its Electric has been awesome. I especially loved his Dave Grohl interview. Just such a fun guy to listen to, and he really lets everyone speak unlike most
Rob is a class act. Very composed very respectful very interested in the conversation. You can tell the guys like him and respect him.
hearing them talk about Cliff is such a bittersweet thing , my old man told me back in '84 he met cliff and how he thought cliff was gonna be some egotistical jerk like most popular metalheads at that time , but instead he said cliff gave him a beer and talked for a couple minutes about led zeppelin , story gives me the good chills every time I hear it , RIP Mr.Burton .
James' posture is unreal
Years of back problems and many surgeries will do that to ya, you start being prudent with it eventually
Seeing how he used to stand while playing guitar shows his horrible posture, it makes sense why he’s trying to correct it now
I wish they included Jason in this discussion. To hear when he came into the band right when Master was at its peak, would've been awesome
Well, didnt he come into the band for Justice?
It looks like they're in their tuning room, which means they're on tour. Rob is there, whereas Jason would be harder to get ahold of.
@NubsWithGuns Ah yeah youre right. I actually don't know if they found Jason to complete the rest of the tour?
+Alan Just a thought, but it said at the start it's in Antwerp, Belgium. Denmark is a couple of hours away. He probably even drove there (6/7 or so hours)
@@Condemned782 he was in the band by like October '86
Alternative Title: Metallica revisits MoP with Rob
AJPJ10 so you didn’t see beyond the first 3 minutes
I saw the whole thing (honestly forgot about this vid)
Love it when they talk about Cliff.
I know it's a tall ask, but if they can ever do it, I really hope they do a book just about him and everything they can remember about him. And that's the important part, not just about Cliff himself, but how others remember him, the things they did with him and so on.
They love their big brother 🖤
"Back when we had brain cells" fucking Rolf xddd
Who is Rolf?
Kirk face lol hahah he remember that he doesn't remember anything from his lost phone
James sitting with a perfect posture for 13 mins at age 54 and I can’t stay like that even for 13 secs without hunching forward at age 23
Dude same! How does he do it???
James looks like an old man Bart Simpson.
lol

Cliff: *Dies*
James: ¡Ayyyy Caramba!
Robert what is that suppose to mean?
HAHAHA! so true. Hey James, you look stupid now.
I really hope they do this again for ...And Justice For All
Sick Viscera God damn I hope they don't treat "and justice for all..." like it doesn't matter.
I hope they Jason in for it
H1987 have justice for and justice for all!🤘
Jason will be there, but he will take a code of silence.
@H1987: Why would they? It's one of their best albums. The next bigger step to stardom.
Rob, as a Metallica fan and member.. wow
Talha kabukçu Jason was a fan too.
yes he was. But Rob's position is so interesting. He was a fan but he also a member. He's outsider but same time he's inside now :))
Am i savage drum coverı neden yarım hocam?
videodan kaynaklı bir problem olmuş. yükleyince farkettim. Tam solonun sonuna doğru.. instagramda da aynı hatayı verdi. Videoda ses görüntü mixini yaparken bir hata oldu muhtemelen. Teşkkürler bu arada izlediğiniz için :)
Talha kabukçu same with jason, jason was a fan in the early 80s before he joined himself even when he was in metallica he was still a fan, i remember i heard james say something about he felt jason was to much of a fan while he was in the band, dont know if he said it like that, but something similar
When they showed cliff and played orion I teared up, that song means so much to me
There's really no song ever written that has that same vibe.
Madman6505 the only thing that kinda reminds me of it is voice of the soul, but some may disagree with me lol
James has become a very humble person with old age. I think age humbles most people. Kudos to Rob for being there
I think quitting alcohol also has helped him become humble
Age, plus being sober for 15 years and starting a family
Metallica its fucking great that you show these kinds of videos unlike other bands
Wow, I never knew that Battery was about Battery Street in San Francisco.
Me too bc one of the definitions of Battery is "a fortified placement for heavy guns" i thought it was like ab war kinda leading the theme for Disposable Heroes, guess I over thought that one lmaooo.
But I always knew it wasn't about a damn Duracell lmao
Its named after that. Its not about the street or anything that happened there lol. Theyve said in the past the song isnt really about anything. Its just metal. A battery that doesnt run out of energy, like them at that time.
Cliff and Randy Rhoads working in heaven on a classical rock opus. Can’t wait to hear it.
4:53-4:59 James: “back when we had brain, cells.” Kirk: excuse me... WE.
He’s just like what
Can we get Flemming back for the next album please???
I think Flemming is a little behind the times. They should go to an established modern day metal engineer/producer like Andy Sneap, becasue he genuinely loves the 80s thrash metal scene. The guy they have in now (Greg Fidelman) just doesn't seem to know how to do a metal production. He's already given them a disaster when he mixed Death Magnetic AND Lulu, and while HTSD wasn't the worst production i'd ever heard, it sounded off - like a rock production trying to me a metal one. The guitar tone was too flat and the drums just sounded weird.
When master of puppets came out,. I said,,,,,,"they did it again" when an justice came out i said "they did it again" then when the black album came out I said,,,,"they just keep doing it again and again!"
Hmm, I get what you're saying, but have you heard of Evile's first album, Enter The Grave?
The album was produced by Flemming. He does some pretty top quality production there too. It's nice and raw, similar to the late 80's with a little touch of modern metal production quality.
Kinda sad when they were talking about Cliff and Orion and all that part, you can still hear a bit of hurting there in James's voice when he talks about him. To this day I don't think most fans realise just how devistating that must have been to these guys. It's a real credit to Cliff that his contribution to their overall sound is still audible through all these years even with some of the more drastic changes in song writing approaches on different records. Credit to Jason and Rob for being able to come into that at the points they did and deal with it. Especially Jason though. Couldn't have been easy. I'd love to listen to this same sort of discussion about Justice actually. I bet that one is a little more awkward in parts... Like the mixing choice 😂. I think I get why did what they did though.
In a big part it's because they're aware that with Cliff they would have overcome everything they did after he passed away. Cliff was a very open musician and would surely have liked many of the changes the band made, but he would have taken it to another level thanks to his musical knowledge. I suppose that James, Lars and Kirk when they're talking about Cliff must think about how many amazing things would have happened with him in the band.
Imagine that when they made Master of puppets they were at the age of 23 24 . think how many musicians can do this at this age. The best band of all the times. Ladies and gentlemen METALLICA.
Absolute talent with smarts and energy that got them to the top.
We will never see a band with the longevity and class like these guys again
not many at all. it takes an incredible amount of both talent and artistic ability.
James was 22, Lars was 21, Kirk turned 23 during the recording of Mop and Cliff was 23. Unbelievable!
Toda la razón. Son genios
The Beatles have entered the chat
Robert T. is such a classy soft spoken dude.He just kicks back and listens to stories. He is a friggin monster on bass and a great band member! He is living proof that hard work can help u achieve anything.Very inspirational person and great role model for young musicians.
Rob is not a bandmember here. He's a fun. :)
A fun what?
What?... Do you mean he is having fun?
Fan
Lol! Yeah exactly
Yeah and my question now how does one write lyrics here and there or do u sit down and and put lyrics to music 🤔
These are really great guys, I'll never forget "Master of Puppets" because that song was my introduction to Metallica. Now, at 42-years-old still love listening to you all.
Thank you for the music, God bless:)
Rob nailed it on the head when he said the album is the perfect balance of Groove and heavy. I've been trying to put that into words myself for many years and explain why Puppets is as Puppets is. Additionally, it just seems right that I should hear the perfect description coming out of Rob's mouth. It further confirms to me that he is in the place that he belongs and the universe is in harmony.
" Back when we had memories or uhm...braincells"
-James, 2017
When he said that Kirks face is priceless
That was about 2 hours too short. Would love to see more!
This is actually one of the best things they've ever filmed. So interesting and fascinating.
The album? It's a milestone, and these guys are living legends, but none of this would be real without the late Cliff Burton. The genius behind one of the best musical pieces in modern music: Orion.
Would be cool if they will release one final album with Flemming as a producer.
I don't understand why bands in general don't do more videos (or "documentaries") like this one.
I would PAY to see a 2 hours version of that.
Well said
PaleBlueDot awesome share. Thank you, great art.
A lot of nights I put Orion on repeat while I sleep. What an amazing composition!
It will be the best decision for Metallica after the year 1991
"Muppets" & "Justice" are the two greatest metal albums of all time, IMO.
(....and justice for Jason).
Megadeth rust in peace and Iron Maiden somewhere in time
Shawn AC/DC Powerage was a monumental moment in pre thrash but that album is fucking killer, so was sabbaths first solo album
Justice is fine, but the only song on there that really stands out to me personally is One
in my heavily biased opinion, it'd be "Muppets" & "Lightning" that are the best
The songs on justice is out of this world but the mixing is down the toilet.........

I was a Freshman in High School when Master of Puppets came out.. Oh my girlfriend used to hate it when I listen to them. Metallica wasn't popular with the Female listeners back in the 80's... Times have changed for sure, Congrats Metallica
They were popular at my high school in the 80s. A lot of Metallica fans, boys and girls. I was indifferent at the time. Like them more now.

I hope they do more these long format sessions. Loved hearing them remember cliff. And it’s cool to have robs perspective as a fan before he was a member.
It’s great to hear them talk so fondly of Cliff. His music will live on.
Best band in the world.
MEGADETH BEST!!!!

Metallica +Cliff Berton? okey 100%
You apparently haven't heard one good megadeth song.
I have actually heard a lof of Megadeth songs, but will all due respect to them, they'll never be nowhere near as good as Metallica's first 4 albums (since we re talking about proper metal here i suppose)

“Completely floored”. Yep. I was 16 when it came out and I’m still floored when I hear it to this day. Just the perfect album.
We need another Flemming and Metallica album.
The guys need to bring Fleming back to produce their next record. The man is a legend!
My favourite songs form MoP:
1. Damage Inc.
2. Master of Puppets
3. Disposable Heroes
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5. Battery
6. The Thing That Should Not Be
7. Orion
8. Leper Messaiah (or whaterver I should spell it like... I'm not English)
WhO aRe YoU!?
I really hate the part in damage inc at 5 minutes 33 seconds into the song
@@joakles1947 LOL, Yeah worst part ever in metal history! But recycling is always an option though ;-)
It is so touching. I like this guys again. They changed a lot in a good way.
What a surreal experience for an extremely shy and humble Rob. Amazingly humble and to be in this band, to have the killer bass skill sets to win that gig was in itself staggering. And boy has Rob gone on and just aced it and then some. Age brings maturity, this clip evidence and a reminder of such. Great stuff, the amazing bak catalogue and history of one of the biggest and best metal bands on display.
Great interviews, Fleming and Michael Wagner, that’s so cool revisiting that era. I wanna hear more Larz.
Greatest heavy metal album of all time.
second greatest after Ride the Lightning!!

fantastic...love seeing the story behind the music....THANK YOU FOR THIS
ORDERED the deluxe Master of Puppets vinyl set yesterday! I could listen to the guys sit around and chat about this album for hours. So happy they pointed out the hidden piano key in Sanitarium... notice it every time! Master of Puppets is probably the best album overall qualitatively but definitely go back and forth between Lightning, Master and Justice. I listened to The Thing That Should Not Be during the total eclipse.. was blasting it actually. It was fucking perfect.
Daniel you make some good points... but I think what counterbalances the flaws in Lightning is the young, raw badass energy that they bring to those songs man. It's still there in Master... but with Lightning they were still so damn fresh and pissed off. I fucking love the energy in Kill 'Em All and Lightning.
Puppets was an album that broke the barrier of how a heavy record can sound. RTL to me is their best. It was such a jump I tonality and strong songs. It also was Cliff's first songwriting credits and that's why it kicked ass. Gotta love the 4 horsemen and having access to so much footage, they love their fans
mikey1974 hetfield Escape is the worst thing ever though. Trapped Under Ice drags too
Trapped Under Ice is awesome. it's the most KEA-esque track on RTL, but it has an extra touch of darkness that KEA usually didn't have. and the build-up from the intro to the solo to the verse riff is still better constructed than most thrash songs.
I LOVE to listen to the juxtaposition between ride the lightning and death magnectic its unreal i could talk about it for hours
Great job guys! It was especially good to hear the bits about Cliff!!!
AWESOME great to hear the stories makes it all more possible
A desert island album. Start to finish greatness that's missing sorely today. Thanks for the CLIFF credits, he deserves it 10 fold.
I can just imagine how awkward it was for Rob
Nah man, this dude was a fan aswell. He probably enjoys hearing stuff about the old days, I know I’d enjoy to hear both sides of the story
I don't think it was awkward for him. He probably loves hearing these kinds of stories.
Awkward? To be a mega fan of a band and to not only be in them, but to sit in the same room as them and the production staff of a classic album as they tell stories PLUS be asked to give your thoughts? That's not awkward. That's the fucking farthest thing from awkward you could ever get. It's a dream come true!
I don't think any of you get it, I think he meant it was awkward because Rob came in WAYYY after Puppets, which is known for having one of the best bassists of all time, where Rob... well, he's good enough to be in Metallica.
@@stedmangg Unless you're a musician at that level you wouldn't make a statement like that . It's not awkward It's reverance and awe

You need to make another album with Fleming
Charla Tan definitely.
Agreed. Loved his work

I love Lars’ new podcasts and interviews. He actually does a pretty good job. Especially his interview with Dave Grohl.
I love to hear how this album was made, from the very people involved... the songs included in this one are amazing... "Orion" for me is a masterpiece, I still listen to it and blows me away even after all this years, I imagine all of them writing the song, creating the melody as perfect as it is. I hope to see soon in this channel a good resolution video of a live interpretation of "Orion" with the master Cliff... Regards to all who enjoy the good music!!!!
Luis Molina Orion, Yep, Everytime I hear it there's something new.
Had an M&G that day with Metallica. One thing I planned was asking if they wanna play Orion. TOTALLY forgot it!!!! Slamming my head for two weeks now. We had a great show Nov 3. but really, I need to hear that song life.
Luis Molina I don’t think a live version of Orion with Cliff as the bassist exists as he died before they could play it live with him
*insert name here* bummer, I always wanted to believe it could exists at least one recording of this before his early death... but I had my doubts about it...
This was amazing! We need one of these a week!
I’ve been on a Metallica kick for the past couple weeks now. Watching interviews, live shows, and whatever else is out there on these dudes. I’ve been a fan for a while now but I’ll never grow tired of listening to all of them get together like this and talk. They’ve been around for squillions of years but that bond of brotherhood has never been broken and it’s so rad to see that on and off stage. Love these dudes forever. Can’t wait to see/hear what’s next🥰❤️
Love hearing Flemming Rasmussen on this one. You can really hear his Danish accent. Lars' has almost dissapeared in all his years in the US. Would have been fun if Lars and him spoke some Danish just to keep the other guys left thinking "what are they saying?" (Plus I like hearing my own language on international media because it happens so rarely)
I kinda dig the idea of them chatting amongst themselves and conducting an interview of sorts like this!! No annoying third party ignorant star struck interviewer; just them sharing memories and relaxed! It's actually quite beautiful!! I wish more bands did that! Deeply refreshing! Thank you Metallica!! \\m//
I grew up in the San Francisco bay area..(James actually took a friend of ours on a date) ..my husband and his friends were already huge fans of yours.. I was going to Day on The Greens, but never saw you...my husband & his friends conned me into seeing you at the Cow Palace, right after the Black Album came out. And this, ladies and gentleman, is one of the greatest "interviews" i´ve ever seen im my entire life.
Lars is a very great business man. But the guys had talked about firing lars during this album. Talk crap about lars all u want but he made and pushed the band as a business guy.
If he only had taken lessons early on .... imagine how much more potent the music could've been.
@@HillVillageDragon Who gives a shit. No one who were teached how to play metal were as innovative as they were. I think he and the band is fucking brilliant. And they certainly have the best albums compared to the rest.

So awesome to hear all of this. It's timeless.
This. This is what inspires me as a musician to play and write my own riffs. I never expected to be 14 years old and just going at my guitar for hours and hours a day. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and more bands fuel my creativity. I dont know where I’d be without music. It’s therapeutic and it makes me happy.
I fucking love James! He just cracks up at the littlest things!!!
A True Masterpiece from start to finish, transcending all genres, This album is why I'll always remain a loyal Metallica fan regardless of where they go musically!
I love hearing about Cliff. I try to imagine him now as best as I can.
I was sooooo happy to hear them mention Battery St in SF. I use to live in SF , and whenever I saw the Battery St. sign in the financial district, I could totally imagine them raging down it to get to the freeway to go home after a show at the Stone. I was right!!!! How cool is that?
You are the best in the world!!! You always make my day!!! 🙂🤘🏼
Hey! You should absolutely do this talk for ...And Justice For All. You must do it, with Jason Newsted if you can, there's many wandering things I'm sure.
+Mustafa Şatıroglu,
Yeah I hope this is a series, do one for every album.
Also, this may sound like a weird idea, but if you can have multiple guitar players in a band, then why not multiple Bass players, i.e. their not just going to kick Rob out (and I wouldn't want them to) so the next best thing is to have 2 Bass players.
P.S. The second Bass player I'm referring to in Jason.
Blue Glass Productions I'm totally agreed with you man. I hope they do it serious too, there's different kinds of Metallica at every albums era. I especially wonder about AJFA. Because, they lost Cliff, a genious musician and bassist. It's normally effected their music. Even their behave to Jason.
And about 2 bass idea, It could be really great. Multiple bass is not a requirement like two guitars, because guitars does melodies together. But they did awesome job with Jason at gig they did at San Francisco, 2011.
Jason is a great musician, he surely put new ideas to band. And most of the fans loves him, plus his back vocals are great live, especially at these times.
2 guitars you can do but 2 basses doesn't work..
+Rickey Ryan,
But Jason would be there for mainly Nostalgia reasons, so he'd be playing the same shit as Rob, but people would be happy just to see him, as well as hear his vocals.
An writing/recording wise, he would contribute too, as Metallica seems to be much more accepting of having Bass in their band these day's (and have admitted that themselves, and admitted that many of Jason's ideas were turned down simply because he wasn't Cliff).
Or another idea, could be to have Rob and Jason rotate, so have Rob do the first half of the set list, Jason do the second half, then have both of them come on stage to do an Encore or something.
This was fantastic...wish it was longer.
It’s great because it never gets boring no matter how many times you listen to it every song has so many directions like it’s fast and then it will mellow out and sound like a different song and it’s like a roller coaster ride and yet all the different directions that are in one song absolutely jell together perfectly and then the lyrics and how perfect they fit the song it’s just a masterpiece album and it’s a shame that cliffs not here to see the impact that his musical passion has inspired so many and it makes me wonder what other great ideas he didn’t get the chance to create and from the stories I heard from people that were close to him about him being just a down to earth person and a good friend to the people that were lucky enough to be his friend god bless you Cliff Burton you will live forever in your music
Wow, seems like James is totally doing a dig at Kirk here 4:50 since Kirk lost his iphone while making the Hardwired album which had all his demos on it and he couldn't remember anything, so he basically didn't contribute to any of the song writing.
If I remember well, Kirk saod that the demos he lost wasn't very good.
HarvesterOfShadows James has clarified in a recent interview that Kirk had some personal stuff to deal with during the writing of the album and that it’s up to Kirk to talk about it.
phototristan- lmao. . Good catch.
HarvesterOfShadows- that's interesting, what makes you think that? Do you think he traded it for drugs or something?

8:50 Cliff Burton Thank you MAN We love you!!
Great video!
I played the middle section of Orion at my dad's funeral this year. When I was in high school I used to listen to metal a lot. I would often play Master of Puppets over my stereo in my room as that is one of my favorite albums of all time. One day my dad asked me what "that melodic classical sounding song" was. I figured out he was talking about Orion.
From that day on he would often play Orion whenever he had his stereo setup going downstairs in our old house. It was his favorite Metallica piece. Every time I hear that song I think of my dad.
I chose to play Orion's middle section at my dad's funeral because it is special to my dad and to me as a sort of bonding over music. I miss him.
You all are legends. My best band ever 😍😍. Happy to see you guys so refreshed. Sir James and Kirk- you r the ones who brings life within us😍😍
