You can really see how emotional Kirk gets when talking about Cliff! every time you can hear the love in his voice and the conflicting sadness on his face. I think there's a part of him that feels responsible for cliffs death due to switching bunks that he'll just never get over and it feels like you can really sense in when he speaks about him.
I think he still feel guilt about the tour bus bed. In documentary somewhere kirk said they choose bed by draw card and he chose cliff’s bed. End up accident that night

This is probably the most down to earth interview Metallica has ever given. 5 stars to the interviewer for asking questions I’m sure they’ve never been faced with answer before and not even in a negative it just shined light on a new perspective from within the band and their mindsets of today’s culture and the youthfulness in todays fan base.

Probably the most relaxed I have ever seen James during this sort of thing. Definitely had a noticeable and positive effect.
Same with Kirk, who still seems nervous, but far less than usual. Also much more talkative. this was a great interview for them both.

I think this interview went so well because James didn't have Lars constantly trying to one up him or just ramble on as he tends to do. Kirk is always an open book and emotional and I dig that. Keep on keeping on Tallica!

In the cliff em all video of for whom the bell tolls, the way he plays and smiles is of a man who knows that everything from now on is pure success, and sadly he never really lived that success in such level. They're getting older,death of loved ones hits you harder. Lately,been thinking of my loved one (friend) who was murdered at 20. I literally cried thinking about her listening to Joy Division Saturday night & this was over 35 yrs ago. It sucks man,can't truly explain it. Requiescat in Pace Shannon McGloshen. I love you & will pray for your Soul daily. Go to confession boys,it is medicine for the Soul.
I wish Metallica + Jason made a podcast so they could just talk uninterrupted for hours it's so nicely to listen to them and they probably have enormous amounts of those small stories to tell

I think Kirk genuinely hates these interviews. He's so uncomfortable. His hands are almost always clasped Infront of him the whole time. But this was one of his best interviews.

Kirk really opens up in these interviews and you can really see the passion when he's talking. He's also very expressive with his expressions and body language and some people think it's "weird" for some reason but yea

I think we have to give props to the interviewer as well, she stayed off the cliche's, asked some really insightful questions and it shows that she is a genuine metal listener and Metallica fan!
Much credit goes to the interviewer, she asked questions they could sink their teeth into and not the generic copy and paste stuff

The worst part about those gatekeeper people is that if you are a new fan and you do answer the 3 song question and it is from a newer album they STILL will say you are not a "real" fan. Makes me sick to see and hear about.
If you are a real fan and someone asks you to prove so by naming three songs the correct response is "Fuck you."
I feel like especially Metallica has many "only the first two albums were good" kind of "fans". Just accept that you will encounter those, but don't let them try to drag you down.
Also, this was waaaay worse earlier back in the day. Many said, the Black Album was when they sold out - now by most fans fully accepted beautiful album. Load/Reload were hated back then, because "not Metal enough" ... and I see more and more people recognizing all the "hidden gems" on those records. Heck, even for St. Anger some people are coming around and can accept them. Apparently it takes many people a decade or two ... so envoy being ahead of them if you already like the newer stuff ;-)

That was an unbelievably beautiful thing for Kirk to say about Cliff, about how he wishes there was more footage of him from the early days.
When you’re expecting an answer to be kind of a laugh out loud anecdote or rock and roll lifestyle-themed, but then Kirk comes out with that was so unexpectedly emotional.
These are really decent questions that aren’t very typical. Love how it turned out.

They introduced Metallica to me at 13. Launched me into love for music and musicianship. I truly think haters don't have a leg to stand on with this record. It's hands down true Metallica. 🤘🤘🤘

Great interview job from Sophie. She showed great passion and interest with great questions. It's hard to hear about people that are gatekept out of things, but I'm very glad she brought it up because it needs to be talked about more and pushed back against because Kirk was correct in that music is for everyone.

I guess Kirk is aware of the criticism towards him and wants to make it clear somehow that it "doesn't affect him". While James seems to avoid such comments, he just wants to avoid negativeness
As a young female fan of Metallica AND Slipknot, this interview spoke to me in ways that no other interview ever has. Amazing vibe, great questions. The interviewer did such a great job.
The female part goes without saying, if you listen to Slipknot, you're a confirmed female.

Metallica - Saved My Life !
I love them throughout all the stages and changes and the very fact that they change in the way of creation. The fans need to evaluate their own change. To love a band is to recognize their changes and to love the change because it is their feeling.
To be a true fan in my opinion, is to be a person who loves Metallica in the following way. This means that just as you like the change for the better that you want to see in others, so you have to like the band that is going through changes.
The feeling of emotion that the listener feels in the band Metallica is like getting answers to the questions that are painful in his life. The listener feels a sense of belonging in every note and sound. The rebellion of youth, the rebellion of adulthood and to feel the self-healing with the growth of the band itself. Their music makes you feel freed, freed from anger and painful emotions. This is metal music, which is actually on the secret side of things - therapy for the soul.
You learn to grow with the changes they present in their emotional openness and it gives hope to the regular listener that everything can be fixed on the level of life itself. In fact, if we look deeply, we can clearly see that we are talking about a medicinal species called Metallica.
And why say on a medical level ? The feeling that one feels that brings up repressed emotions and things indicates the truth of the work. The honesty of the artists - the band itself.
And so this is where the healing process begins and so the rebellion begins in the youth... Is there a connection?
Thanks to the rebellion and belonging to the sound style of the sounds themselves, the emotional connection begins. Anyone who gets to feel the metal and romantic sides of the work is locked up forever.
So, in fact, the metal tone of the band Metallica evokes something real and deep, which is clearly repressed.
A normal person doesn't exactly connect with these shades, we'll all admit it together - really!
They make you feel like you're the hero in every song.
It is also possible that a deep fear and anxiety of the band members left them in their occupation out of the "self-discovery" of what actually brings them happiness in their lives. The tangible magic that now we all get to watch with such joy is because the band opened their hearts to the listeners and thereby saved themselves from the mental problems that everyone suffers from.
The fusion was successfully performed, the merging was successfully performed on all psychological levels and it is now a privilege to see them speak naturally. The famous psychologist Carl Jung, and I'm sure he would have been happy to see that the dark side was successfully corrected and moved to the bright side of Metallica - the light within Metallica.
As a musician, guitarist and producer, as someone who was the champion of Israel in professional skating in his youth on a skateboard.
I remember having headphones in my ears while skating, all I could hear was Metallica. The anger, frustration, fears and intense youthful emotions I felt while skating along with the music only healed me completely. He took everything out of me, they took the darkness from me to the light!
A person who is on the merry-go-round of emotions in the process of growing up and that youth rebellion that goes through as a process - the complex. And thus he goes through emotional changes in his life for the better. The regular listener goes through the complex process of self-healing with them.
Every album and I'm making progress! And I build myself along with the musical changes that the band goes through, from album to album I learn from them and how to love the changes that I go through. I researched the words that convey the feelings in the sounds, I studied the formal harmonies of the structure of the piece in depth discovering the magic that is called - Metallica.
The timbre of the sound creates a feeling of awakening, the transcendence of repressed feelings that are emotionally visible and empathetic and frees itself from dancing, head banging, and also sitting and not moving and just listening without movement.
In my humble opinion and no training at all in the medical field, In my personal research opinion (I'd like to think so lol) and unquestionably say that Metallica saved human lives in humanity in the 21st century.
If I decide to do a global medical study based on Metallica and the medical aspects they contribute, something simply amazing would be discovered here. Metal as medicine... Interesting isn't it?

After 30 years of watching james hetfield in interviews what makes him so unique for me is to go from the awesome 90's figure to almost a free sprit and open book now and yet remain an absolute bad-ass throughout
Great interview; I've been a Metallica fan since I was 9 years old (1989) and I'm very grateful that they're still with us and still making great music. Beyond the specific style or genre into which any of their albums might fit is the personal journey and evolution of their music, lyrics, and the band members themselves that really matters to me. I've even had the pleasure of experiencing my children discover Metallica and fall in love just as I did. I've loved Metallica for 34 years and hope they get to keep doing what they love for many years to come

I’m 19 years old rn and I’m a huge fan of them, i picked up a bass cuz of Cliff Burton. I’m so happy that I can experience their new stuff coming out in my teen years aswell.

Oddly enough, I accidentally ended up living in Old Bridge NJ in recent years, which is where Johnny Z and the other founders of Megaforce records lived when the signed Metallica. So, I'm surrounded by the original metal heads who inspired the song Metal Militia. I even spoke with Metal Mike on the phone who regaled me with tales of Metallica and Cliff Burton running around and playing shows in his basement when they first came here to record Kill 'em All. I'll be a fan until the day I die

"Discovered" heavy metal at age 13 in 1992, via hearing the "Ride The Lightning" album at my best friends house, and then "Wherever I May Roam", "One", and Ozzy's "No More Tears" on the one heavy metal station in my area. Those four albums and songs were my intro to heavy metal. Sooo much better sounding, & with so much more musical skill, than the music I'd listened to previously.
To this day, that "Ride The Lightning" studio cut of "Creeping Death", and the "Call of Ktulu" studio track on the same album, are still two of my favorite music tracks of all time.
Fast forward to 6 years later after my first listen in '92. "Garage Inc." came out when I was in college. I'd already heard all the old stuff as I had long had a copy of "Garage Days Re-Revisited and More" on tape. And I had long loved their studio cover of "Am I Evil?" But when "Garage Inc." came out, I absolutely loved the super high production of so many of the new covers. The "Merciful Fate medley" is sooo heavy, & so superbly produced.
I strongly recommend any Metallica fan who hasn't checked THAT ONE out yet, to do so immediately.
Overall, I am glad they keep innovating, and continuing to put quality stuff out.
I also for some reason really like the "All Nightmare Long" track, and the music video. Usually I shun music videos, but I just find that one entertaining.

My Uncle knows i`ve been a Metallica fan for years but his taste in Music is Jazz,Classical etc. He watched them perform live on uk tv (Jools Holland) out of curiosity and told me I see why you like them so much,they were really,really good. I said their music is empowering. He asked what I meant so I told him "It makes you feel alive". He smiled back and agreed. 🙂
Its crazy to think that back in 86 when i first heard Master of Puppets how it forever changed my life, and now after so many years later through Stranger Things a whole new generation of fans are hearing it and having it change their lives! Amazing!
I was born in 1990 but the first time I head MOP was on the Metallica S&M live album from 1999. I was absolutely blown away. 😯 I had to go find the album, and it is still my favorite to this day. 😁
how did James turn into the cool dad figure and Kirk that uncle that always looks like he is on some kind of vacation. I hope this band doesn't end shitty tearing at others members throats like so many great bands that have been in my life for over 40 years. so glad they are still together and healthy and making more music for us.
You can tell the different stages of Herfields life by looking how he looks. He looks amazing now. A couple of years ago he was ballooning and looking haggard. He really looks in shape and hella healthy now

After all of the grief that James, Lars, and Kirk gave Jason for being a fan of Metallica while being in the band, it's quite funny to hear James say that they are their biggest fans. After 40 years of playing music, I think that it's awesome that the Metal Militia is still growing. YAH bless!!!

The emotion and vulnerability in James face whilst reminiscing as Kirk speaks of Cliff, so personal and bittersweet. The growth in James to be comfortable enough to show some of his pain and discomfort within just a few seconds, really healthy to see him just be in that moment and not hide it.
