  • Members of the legendary hard rock band Metallica, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo sit down with Zane Lowe to celebrate their 40th anniversary. The band members walk through the incredible story of Metallica, and reminisce on starting out in San Francisco, assembling an elite band of uniquely gifted musicians, and evolving into one of the most famous bands to ever take the stage. Never taking time to pat themselves on the back, Metallica was always driven to look towards the future of rock, and they cite this as the reason for their success. They discuss the influence of Jason Newsted and Bob Rock, and thank the heavy metal bands they competed against for pushing them towards greatness.

Cliff had a lot of input into the musical production on the first three albums. But Cliff was a musical genius, and had studied music, and music theory.

@@elizabethhock4414 based on James’ other interviews on this subject, I think you’re absolutely right. Cliff was just as much a composer as as he was a bass player. My understanding is that Jason came in and wanted to slot with the band with as little creative friction as possible (which I get, these are big egos, it’s a new job for him and he doesn’t want to ruffle feathers right out the gate). James has even spoken about being annoyed Jason would just follow his guitar parts and not deviate. So when he says “we love you but you’re not Cliff”, I think he is talking just as much musically as he is personally.

Agree so much. I hate he had to leave. When I was 16 me and my best friend and my brother went to our very first Metallica concert and we were standing at the edge of the balcony screaming every lyric in headbanging the whole show, and Jason acknowledged us and pointed at us and gave us a nod and through the metal “horns” up at us and that just made our night.
For a lot of us that got into Metallica in the late 80s early 90s. Jason always felt like he belong to and Jason always seem like the one that related to the fans the most. Don’t get me wrong. I love Rob and I think he’s a phenomenal bass player but I hate that Jason had to leave but I understand it at the same time so if we can’t have Jason I’m glad we have Rob but you are so correct. It’s not like Jason is one of the 22 members of Megadeth that no one knows their name, and was just there for an album and a couple tours and then gone by the time the next album came out. No, Jason was a huge part of Metallica.

It would be great if the band could talk about Kirk's contribution to their music in glowing terms, or really just at all, like they did with Rob. Without Kirk's solos I'm not sure the 2nd - 4th albums would be iconic as they are, especially with songs like Fade, RtL, One etc plus he wrote the Sandman riff! Give the guy some respect

To me he just looks like a hipster with an ego, which is probably quite far from the truth - So please forgive my ignorance. I was just kind of taken aback by how often he'd interject into the band's stories and when they're formulating their thoughts about what he'd just asked them, he might chip in with his own words to help them along. Lars: "Whether you like it or not, it's 100 percent us" - Metallica in a nutshell and something that goes back to what even Cliff Burton said back in 1986 about doing things their way. With all the things this band has done it's still mindboggling that people still don't get that and have the audacity to say what they have done in the last 30 years is not Metallica. Further proof that some fans simply never got it.
