A couple of people already mentioned that there was a whole section cut, it was at right about 16:00 in your video when He was singing "And when I dream!" That cut there was why that part seemed so jarring.

@@SirMattomaton I agree that I probably like the main part of the song better without that end part; at least sonically. The one part is like orks. I have always thought that the drums for this song were tribal.. Job well done lady concerning the album! I so enjoy your insights and expert opinions. There are a couple of interviews with David regarding that signature sound on UA-cam. He’s an interesting guy. Also, they released two videos a year or so ago of which one is called Hold Onto the Memories that is gorgeous.
In case someone hasn't said it yet, David Draiman trained as a kid to be a cantor in the orthadox jewish community he grew up in. That's where the "classically trained" techniques come from (vibrato, etc), along with a few other stylistic things that helped make him exceptional and unique as a vocalist in the world of Metal. I'd recommend you spend some time exploring Disturbed's work in general (you seem to dig it!), and in a few months go back and re-watch The Sound of Silence. You'll have a deeper appreciation for what an impact that made for their existing fans when they put it out. (I cried. So good. Augh.)
I have listened to several of your videos (mostly Home Free, Pentatonix and Peter Hollins) but this one was really well done and I thoroughly enjoyed how you broke down the vocal techniques in this song.
Great video and reaction! An aspect in metal that you may have noticed with this one is that many of the held notes and much of the sound hovering happens on a consonant like the nnn sound as well as the vowels. This is because the voice is often used as "just another instrument" in metal so it helps to be good at staccato and holding on consonants to introduce a vocal rhythm and open/leave space for other instruments and sounds. It is also why the vocals are often more buried in the mix - the story and emotion is told as much through the overarching sound of all combined instruments as it is through the words of the song - which is why heavier metal genres like death metal can have nearly incomprehensible singing but still be enjoyed.
I so agree with you, for the folks who do not like this should just leave - AMEN... "Can feel that?" "Will you give it to me?" ARE we about to convert you to becoming a metal HEAD??? I love your reaction, thank YOU...
Any metal fans hope she finds Queensryche's Geoff Tate hitting E5s in 'Take Hold of the Flame" live in Tokyo? Ok, maybe just me 😄 Metal has some great vocalists. I love musical theater too, what can i say, good voices are good voices! Grab the lyrics for that one, the video is from 1984..
Yes, I think she would enjoy that one and other Geoff Tate era Queensryche as well. We'll have to be patient with our musical theatre gal and work incrementally through the classic metal vocalists like Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. Metal may never be Jen's cup of tea but I believe she will appreciate and find honest respect for the vast talent that metal artists have. 🤘
Great job, Jen! Another Disturbed to really throw you off, as far as the complexity that is David Draiman... "Uninvited Guest" is almost a full blown ballad.
As I recall, a few months ago several of us assured you that you would turn into a metalhead once you came to fully appreciate the talent and expression. I see the transition is in progress1 Good for you!
Thanks for your interesting breakdown. I've listened to the song a few hundred times but you pointed out a few things, especially about his phonation, that I never noticed before. I'd be interested to see what you think of Disturbed's song "Stricken".
Hi Jen! Very good reaction and your journey in metal music world is going quite well, even if still a little bit terrifying 😇. What is amazing in metal world is the range of different singing styles you can find in it. The human voice is capable of so many things, and sometimes it's just going crazy. As a vocal coach it could be interesting for you to check out Lorna Shore. It will probably freak you out cause this is really brutal but the vocals of Will Ramos, the singer, are just crazy. So I you feel confident enough to check it, I recommend the one take vocal video of "To The Hellfire", so you will be able to analyse the vovals skills of Will.

16:42 you said what David did was classical kind of singing…I’m sure I’m not the first to tell you he was Classically trained as a Cantor when he was young, I read somewhere that he actually comes from a family of Cantors.
Don't worry about the few curse words that this song has. We metal heads are used to it, and some bands do that more than other's. Even Nightwish has a dirty word in Master Passion Greed song. And Marco singing his heart out. Lol
I have watched so many voices coaches or so many in classical music and I don't understand how some of them have not ventured into all relms of music. I have always listened to every single type of music. I just love music...
Probably more of a time constraint issue then anything else. It takes approximately 10000! Hours to master any skill, that doesn't leave much leisure time if you are truly driven.
I was waiting for you to do this. Nothing like the cover hey lol. My friends & I do the ah wah ah ah to find each other at the shops 🤣 Love your reactions as always & well done on getting your music out there
Do not be afraid. It will be OK. Sour and negative people should leave and never come back.... The drums are tribal to me.... It is a call. When you watch this song the crowd is activated by that sound. I mean the mosh pit. All of these men are darn good. This song gets a response from everyone. Once again your pitch impresses me so much....
I've heard David say in an interview that one of his major inspirations is Raggae, and I think it shows very strongly in this chorus. The phrasing feels super Raggaeish.
If you'd like some live recommendations, you've GOT to check out the live performance of Nightwish's "The Islander" with Marco taking the lead. It's simply magic.

idk if anyone mentioned it but a verse was cut out towards the end when it felt like the music was building. the vocals in that verse were the most diverse and emotional in the song
Loved your reaction! This was the censored version. I would’ve love to see your face in the part the was cut out. It’s right after the “when I dream” part.
Oh, bummer, I was looking forward to your reaction to “the” section. You did the PG version. The proper version tells more about what the song is about. Also it would have been more fun watching your face. Hehe
Their normal sound is of course that of a Metal Band. And that is exactly why I had GOOSE BUMPS listening to their cover of The Sound Of Silence. I was wondering if David was ill or was wounded or had lost somebody and was sad, or what? Because it was SO un-like anything I had ever heard from them previously. And it was GREAT. They did SO well on it, when I had NO clue of their background except fort their Metal image. Of course I found out things after that which made them infinitely more interesting as a band. Just AWESOME stuff! :) Great reaction and breakdown of course. Luv ya!
David Draiman was trained by one of the first "Metal" specialized vocal coaches, don't remember her name unfortunately, who found that many Metal performers gave themselves permanent vocal cord damage from singing. She took on Disturbed, and is David's coach. Please look her up, perhaps you could figure / trade techniques. Thanks!! Great reaction.
Most hard rock and metal vocalists know how to literally "play' the proximity effect of their microphone like it's an extension of their styles and techniques vocally. In most cases, an SM57 or SM58 variety when "live". Been that way for decades.
Disturbed, a heavy metal band from Chicago is what one would expect the kind of sound from a sick city like Chicago. A city that’s the Mecca of sickness. I lived and worked in Chicago most of my life and started listening to Disturbed many years ago. It wasn’t like that when I first moved to Chicago in 1975. I watched the city change and grow and in the last 20 years turning to insanity. Chicago is Disturbed!
If you have a chance, listen to the unedited version of this song. There's a very impactful bit he does after the "When I dream" section that's been cut out of the official video because of language. The song "Hold on to Memories" is another great example of his varying musical styles.
He is kind of like Howie Mandel on steroids'. My first time watching your channel and reaction. I enjoyed it and you got a new subscriber! Oh last thing, how many people tell you that you resemble Aubrey Plaza?
I’m brand new to a lot of Disturbed’s music so this is so fun. 😄 I’ve recently read about his influences & training, which both shine brightly no matter what he’s performing. Many times David’s voice sounds to me like he’s actually becoming a variety of musical instruments from percussion to orchestral strings to electric guitar & bass with some incredible singing thrown in. 🎵🎤🎸🥁🎻 I’m so excited to be starting the journey of discovery of all of his projects & long career. It’s not often we get someone so innately talented who also has the training to showcase their abilities over 20 plus years of studio recordings & live performances. Anyone have any recommendations of where to start?
Would be really interested to see your reaction to The Hu - Wolf Totem for a bit more guttural throat singing Mongolian. They even did a version with Jacoby from Papa Roach.

I have watched so many voices coaches or so many in classical music and I don't understand how some of them have not ventured into all relms of music. I have always listened to every single type of music. I just love music...
Probably more of a time constraint issue then anything else.
It takes approximately 10000! Hours to master any skill, that doesn't leave much leisure time
if you are truly driven.
Dear Gawd IREALLY didnt realise how good we had it in 2000
I don't mind pauses at all, I've listened to this song and seen them in concert as as teenager🤣🤣😝
I was waiting for you to do this. Nothing like the cover hey lol.
My friends & I do the ah wah ah ah to find each other at the shops 🤣
Love your reactions as always & well done on getting your music out there
Hahahha that’s what Jacob does! Now I get it 😂 thank you!
I love that she's making hip hop gestures when he's jamming in the chorus. lol
Sad this was the edited version. Love seeing the reaction to the cut part.
Your facial expression(s)... Priceless!
I think we have a closeted Disturbed fan in our midst. Sub earned. 😂😂🤒 5:08
Should really check out Queensryche “take hold of the flame” live in Japan
If you'd like some live recommendations, you've GOT to check out the live performance of Nightwish's "The Islander" with Marco taking the lead. It's simply magic.
Anything Nightwish with Floor or Tarja is great live. Some of their official videos are fun as well but the live videos are 🔥
You should listen to Small Town Titans "You're a mean one". If you're looking for a Holiday themed song.
Hi jen nice job as always. Your next disturbed reaction should be warrior in this song you can sence his lower voice.
Heh, I'm down for this one! Not my favorite Disturbed track but I love the analysis of the hairball cough lmao
😂😂 what a sound hahah!
@@JenniferGlatzhofer he’s amazing, no idea how he does it, sounds like four different people sometimes. If you do ‘Hold On to Memories’, bring tissues!
There was about a minute of the song that was cut out. It’s basically David yelling and cursing at his mother.
Love your in depth analysis of this epic group but can I ask which (roughly) area of my beautiful island you are from,I'm from the north east and I just can't pin down your accent ✌️
idk if anyone mentioned it but a verse was cut out towards the end when it felt like the music was building. the vocals in that verse were the most diverse and emotional in the song
The singer, David Draiman, is classically trained. Vibrato is common in his singing.
Now back to Home Free, haha.
Definitely should have done live as the music video cuts out the “mommy” part
Great reaction and breakdown of course. Luv ya!
the new disturbed music you can hear his voice has got alot alot better check out Disturbed - Feeding the Fire
Thanks!! Great reaction.
lmao this is legit my favorite break down of this song!
you have way too much fun.....awesome
He’s a classical trained tenor hence the opera sounds you hear but wouldn’t expect
Disturbed's cover of 'Land of Confusion' (Phil Collins) is yet a different journey ;)
Most hard rock and metal vocalists know how to literally "play' the proximity effect of their microphone like it's an extension of their styles and techniques vocally. In most cases, an SM57 or SM58 variety when "live". Been that way for decades.
Edited video. Full song has some more vocals. Great as always though, keep it up
I think that would terrify her lol
If you think David's transitions are good, you might want to try Jinjer " Pieces Live Session" Tatiana kills the smooth with the growls
His monkey sounds are so realistic and legendary
Please react to their official video of “The Light”…great song and great message!
Would love to see you react to Dan Vasc doing metal covers of female singers.
Next Friday please do this for Female Fridays!!! Evanescence... my Immortal!
I’m so excited to be starting the journey of discovery of all of his projects & long career.
You should definitely listen to the explicit version, lol. You would be so shocked, lol.
You should watch this and the sound of silence right after. Demonstrates his vocal range.
