I trained as a classical trumpet player in my youth and I'm far beyond my teenage angst and anger, but I appreciate talent and skill. The time signature changes, musician skill and vocal techniques of this song are a pleasant change from the run of the mill pop hits of today.
Jinjer is a Ukrainian band who was forced to relocate to a different part of Ukraine back when Russian-backed separatists broke their home region away from Ukraine in 2014. The male members were initially required to stay in Ukraine in case of a draft when Russia invaded this year (they're out and on tour now). Their song "Home Back" was written about the 2014 experience, but it's sadly still very relevant and worth a listen and/or reaction.

Her inspiration comes from a female artist named Otep who pretty much pioneered female vocal distortions. If you'd like, check out her music. I would recommend the song "Blood Pigs". And even if the big surprise moment may have been missing compared to others, these 9 out of 10 certainly had fun in the end. I at least did enjoy it, as I have in the past with other videos from you. :)
I don't know if I've said it before, but I'm far away from being a singer and know zero to nothing about the subject, but I like listening to your explanations. Watching these reactions is my hobby!! There are 2 points in this song that I closely watch and "judge" the reactor. First is the obvious, the first scream/growl, the reactors are so shocked & stunned. Second is at the end when Tatiana instantly switches from the scream/growl to her belting clean voice, which for me is the highlight of Tatiana's performance, so the reactor's response is whether they get a like.

I am actually quite new to harsh vocals myself. But the best way to try it yourself...without hurting yourself, is to make a long 'O' with your mouth, but slowly clear your throat to make the sound. You can play around with that feel and make all sorts of new sounds, they say not to try to add words yet, as you will likely use your true folds and hurt something. :)
If you get really adventurous I would check out one of Lorna Shore's one take performances. I'd say "And I Return to Nothingness" on the Channel "The Will Ramos." The reason I like the one takes is you get to watch him up close, "singing" live, so you get to see all the facial and mouth movements you love to see, but with new sounds behind them.

Hi Jennifer, I just discovered this on my recommended videos and I love your reaction and review. It’s always entertaining seeing first time reactions to Jinjer and Tatiana’s vocals. 😄 Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice channel did a great interview with Jinjer’s vocalist, Tatiana Schmalyuk, in which she described how she taught herself how to do the scream/growl vocals, first by screaming outside on the outskirts of her town (in Eastern Ukraine) and then by screaming in her pillow so she wouldn’t disturb anyone. I’ve been a musician since I was a young child, but I was never into metal music with scream/growl vocals until I heard Jinjer and another female fronted metal core band, Spiritbox, several months ago and now I’m a huge fan of both bands due to their interesting songwriting, excellent musicianship and the fantastic vocals of Tatiana and Courtney from Spiritbox. They both have the ability to instantly transition back and forth from beautiful clean singing to some of the best scream/growl vocals I’ve heard. I would highly recommend checking out the official video for Jinjer’s song Wallflower. It’s a very well written song with a cool vibe and 80-90% of the song has beautiful clean vocals from Tatiana.

As a person who has mastered the kinds of vocals Tati does in this song, it absolutely does feel like two different techniques. And ironically, it's singing cleans that hurts my throat over time more than the growls do lol. I'll give you a basic tutorial of how to try and get that growl in a healthy manor. Make sure to keep your throat soft by drinking water often when practicing.
step 1) exasperate like you've just sunk into the couch after a long day. That rumble in the back of your throat is what you're after.
step 2) try and sustain that reverberation by pushing air out through your diaphragm. This part is where you can hurt yourself if you're engaging your main vocal chords. If it starts to get uncomfortable or hurt, stop and rest. I wouldn't push sessions past 10 minutes at first.
step 3) once you can sustain the basic growl for a bit you just need to learn how to modulate it's pitch, which is a combo of vowel control, air pressure, added vocal fry (that's how she says DEATH)
and little bit of muscle control in the back of the throat.
bonus fun fact, if you can learn to do this technique well it's also pretty much the same technique used for subharmonics which is how I can hit E1's on occasion lol

Take a look at how low bass singers get subharmonics, it'll give you a better idea of where this vocal style comes from. You can learn to use the false fold for a low growl and the singing voice will engage similtaniously with the not a 5th above to create a power chord. That's why it sounds so powerful.

And yeah, that demon thing is kind of terrifying. I’ve gone on to listen to some of their other music, but honestly I just am not into metal. I really like this song, distortions and all-love the constantly evolving time signatures (that drummer is a beast-I guess this video was made to introduce him, as he was their newest member at the time). Tati has a beautiful voice, nice range, great belt, love that kind of husky timbre, but honestly it’s the crazy distortions that make her so unique. Sounds pretty close to standard to me in this song (though I'm not a native speaker either).. I guess except the way she says "scale armor blaze".
But I had similar thoughts when I heard her singing "we stand firmly on our ground" in Teacher Teacher :p (odd phrasing)

She is incredibly talented at clean and harsh vocals, no doubt, and more than just technical, she expresses so much emotion in every note, just an amazing human all around. My favorite technical skill to point out is her ability to switch between vocal styles, she has range and versatility, but her seamless transitions make it feel all the more authentic

Great reaction. The band is fantastic, and Taiana is a vocal goddess. She had a few vocal lessons and started singing when she was 8. When she was 15 of 16 a friend played her Otep and it was the first time she heard a female singer growl. She was determined to learn it and worked on it for years while singing in bands. She is such a master of her voice now she can switch word to word. As some others had mentioned below you need to hear her live. Next try "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019. You'll really enjoy it!

I loved this reaction and analysis as much as I enjoy any other you've made.
First of all, you have never been rude to any artist. You've just said you prefer to keep vowels closer to their original shape.
Second of all, it is indeed amazing what the voice can do, even if not all sounds will appeal to everyone.
One of the things I love about your videos, besides your infectious joy, is how you are so natural and are not trying to say what others want to hear. I love when you say that we can click off the video if we don't want to put up with the pauses. That makes me want to stay even more.
Just be Jenn. We love Jenn.

STELLAR!!! :-) So glad you reconsidered miss. As you say its a learning experience for ALL of us. You are far more competent and capable of commenting on any form of singing than you give yourself credit for. I think because you're so open minded that you'll always give an honest reaction and interpretation, which is all we want.
Well done miss, you are an absolute gem, keep up the amazing work and NEVER apologize for stepping out into unknown territory, you never know what you might find to enjoy :-) Dont give a second thought to the trolls that try to bring you down....what have they contributed to the world after all? Aside from snide, asinine comments. They arent worth your time or energy to consider. ;-)
Yeah Tatiana is a vocal goddess. One of the only metal singers that stays engaged below their false cords and actually modulates the pitch in her screams...mind boggling talent.

This song might as well be tailor made for reaction channels, with both the music and clean vocals lulling you into a state of calm at the start, before slapping you in the face with the switch.
A few more switches to get used to it, then in the final verse she switches so quickly and adds so much more power to it that it leaves you a little stunned.
It really is the perfect introduction to Tatiana, which is probably why it's such a popular request.

They were actually playing tonight in Derbyshire, Bloodstock Open Air, their only date in the UK this year. Next year they will tour in the UK a full month in march.
They have plenty of catchy songs to discover that you might even like, 'better' than Pisces, which is mostly chosen as a first introduction to the group because there is such a change during that it takes the listener off guard. For instance "Perennial (live at wacken)", "I Speak Astronomy", "Judgement & Punishment", "Vortex", "Wallflower".

Back in the early 2000's say 2001/02 Tatiani started listening to Otep-Otep Shamaya at one point she was with a friend she stepped outside and started screaming at passing cars. It's continually evolved since then. Her growls especially the lower ones can be compared to Randy Blythe's of Lamb of God. Please check out some Otep. Oh and when she goes up high on this it's the only time she does save when it was first laid down for King of Everything. She doesn't do it live as she's afraid she'll miff it/screw it up.

I'm an anatomy/physiology nerd (doctoral level) with a head/neck focus.
I am a firm believer that some of the assumptions that we make for our true vocal folds may not find an analogy when we look at false folds and other soft/flappy bits of tissue in the laryngeal/pharyngeal area... I've heard some single-take harsh vocals that clearly have more than one fundamental note (not like Tuvan throat-singing, where the true and false cords are achieving two separate notes .. similar to a like a 'ring modulation' effect... usually a single note from the false-bits).

  • @jameswarner5809
    @jameswarner5809 Рік тому +3

Though not a live performance, I would suggest listening to their track I Speak Astronomy. It's quite progressive musically, there is a higher ratio of clean vocals to growls and you can hear Tatiana doing some epic high belts at the end (note: there is a false end to the song).

Great reaction and loved seeing trying to work out what was going on. If you want to see more about harsh vocals then check out -
The Charismatic Voice putting a camera down Will Ramos from Lorna Shore’s throat whilst doing harsh vocals, lots of funky stuff going on down there.
Also one take vocals from -
Tatiana from Jinjer - Judgement and Punishment
Courtney la Plante of Spiritbox - Rule of Nines or Circle with me
Will Ramos - To the Hellfire
Justin Bonitz of Tallah - Overconfidence
Also worth checking out more Jinjer, Tatiana’s lyrics are pretty special. Perrenial live at Wacken, Wallflower, Home Back and Vortex would be a good start without getting into the heavier stuff.
    Enjoy!

Good call about the growls sounding like two voices - they double tracked the growls and added some clean layering in post on this, so concert videos are a better option in general to see what Tatiana can really do. I do love all the little details that are worked into the video, because as much as they make this look like they just had some extra time and oh, hey, there's a room nobody is using, let's record something, a lot of detail went into this - like notice how Tatiana's outfit echoes the costuming in A New Hope and there's a Star Wars poster on the wall, also all the little lights and the interesting shadows.
I'm sure there are a lot of suggestions to check out Perennial live at Wacken to see them on stage, and Judgement & Punishment one-take for video that sounds like they just cleaned it up since it was recorded at her husband's house in southern California during lockdown. Words of Wisdom live and On The Top live in Kiev are on-stage videos with a lot of belting. Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev shows the full range of her growls.
Tatiana is mostly self-taught, except for a few months of lessons in school as a child but which she didn't have the discipline or inspiration to follow up on. Then at about 15 in roughly 2002 or 03 she heard Otep and was shocked to find out Otep Shamaya is a woman (reactions don't get a lot of views, but I'd suggest at least watching the video of Otep's Ghost Flowers from the Confrontation Live DVD for fun) and inspired by the intuition that she could shock people like that someday. :D From then until 2008 she sang with every local band that would let her pick up a mic. She's said Jinjer is her 8th band, she also had a side project later with a latin band - if you search "vidcerts tatiana jinjer nirvana" you'll find 22 minutes of Tati singing Latin-infused Nirvana with no growls). Meanwhile she was practicing growls once she'd built a vocal foundation, maybe for a couple of years. In 2008 she started a band called Prophecy that was heavily Otep influenced, then 2009 Jinjer formed and their founding vocalist left soon after and they recruited Tatiana since in her words she was the only other person in their town who could growl heh. And the rest is history. To get more background on the false cord growling technique Tatiana is using here, The Fairy Voice Mother's reaction to Pisces she goes into a lot of explanation and even replicates pretty well. Subbed. Cheers!
