Since this is the "clean" version, that has a very specific part cut out of the lyrics (for explicit lyrics reasons), the song paints a very different picture. _With_ those cut out lyrics (The "And when I dream" part is MUCH longer) included, for me, it's about an abused person that snaps and turns the violence unto their abuser - finally "getting down with the sickness" that "was the gift that has been given to me" - beating up their mother, possibly killing her after prolonged times of physical and psychologic abuse received from her. It's indeed disturbing - especially since, as you said several times, it has such a dang catchy rythm and energetic tune below the lyrics. Also, I'd describe David's sounds as animalistic, tribalistic - it's akin more to battle cries, like the sounds from a Hakka or similar. It grabs you and makes the listener huff and puff with energy and, yes, agressiveness.
Going this route, i.e. that of David Draiman's heavier singing style, I HEAVILY recommend that Elizabeth evaluate Disturbed - "Stricken" (studio version). Draiman seemed to me to use greater vocal range in "Stricken" than in "Down With The Sickness". (Plus, the "Stricken" track is excellent, and made to be played LOUD.)
Can we just take a moment to absolutely appreciate how giddy and happy she gets regardless of what kind of music it is? And how open she is to listening to just about anything? Admirable. 100% would friend.
This song always reminds me of the first night out with one of my now oldest friends at Eddies #8 in Brum. She thought I was quite mild mannered till this came on and I was jumping off the bar.
The funny part is that is the exact reason they are in there. He had just randomly done it once and was like I'm going to put this into s song. Paraphrasing here by the way. He talks about it in an interview.
I actually saw this song sung live at download festival and the mic broke. The entire crown carried on singing and I swear that even though I was in the middle of the crowd, we could still hear his voice. He carried on singing with us and it was INCREDIBLE. I'll never forget that feeling.
When this song first came out I was in my car at a stop light and this song came on. Since my windows were up, when the first "Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!" came on I sang along out loud and noticed that the guy in the car on my left seemed to be doing the same. I was in my upper 40's at the time and the guy next to me in a BMW looked like a middle-aged lawyer. The second time, we both did the "Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!" at each other and the light turned green and we both drove off, rocking out.
I was working in a snooty high end window blind manufacturing company at the time.. on the phone.. and this song came on in the background and it was so good, so hilarious that we all (the phone reps for this snooty company) all went .. oh wah ah ah ah simultaneously.. all on different calls with different clients! I guess you had to be there, but it was great!.. I was like, what the fuck was that? lolol.. glory days!! xo
4th.. this needs to happen. He is a very well spoken, intelligent person. She would love him! Especially since she just spoke with Miles, and they performed Sound of Silence together.
He didn't put the vocals on separate tracks. He actually switches back and forth on the fly, which is incredibly impressive in my opinion. You can see him switching the vocal tone instantly in live performances.
It was this channels's analysis of Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence" that convinced me that reaction videos could be works of art unto themselves. Still, who would have imagined that our lovely siren-tist would ever get down with the sickness? Clearly madness is not the only gift that has been given to us. OOH, AH,AH,AH,AH!!
I never knew all I needed in my life was a professional opera performer slowly discovering rock and heavy metal and enjoying every little bit of new musical sound and experience like a kid in a candy store, but here we are. I am having so much fun watching you go through a roller coaster of new musical emotions in your brain! I am smiling so much seeing your reactions I am nearly in tears!! never stop reacting to these :)
Have seen Disturbed 5 times live, and each time when David sang DWTS....his "clean" vs. his "distorted" vocals sound the same live as they do on this recorded version. He doesn't need to sing them separately! Btw, loved your sweet and thorough reaction!
Disturbed live are my drug of choice. I think I’ve seen them close to 40 times now 😂 one tour I went to 4 shows in 6 days, up front on the rail each time.
David has said in interviews that the band started playing for the first time, and the "Ooo ah, ah, ah, ah" just came out of nowhere. The band stopped playing, being so blindsided by the sound, and then insisted he keep it in the song.
It has that same wolf masked Peter Gabriel and Genesis vibe in it, when the crazy of the vocalist slaps the band in the face and leaves them stunned. And I live for it!
David Draiman is one of the best live rock singers out there. I saw Disturbed do a show once where about halfway through he apologized to the crowd for sounding terrible because he had a cold… we were all like, “If that’s how good he sounds when he sick, how amazing is he when he’s well?”
The Disturbed cover of Land of confusion, originally by Genesis, wouldn't be a bad one to analyze if you get the chance. It was a really interesting take on the tune. Definitely one of their better covers.
I agree and the originators of some of their covers (paul simon) have said that Disturbed's covers are "what the song should have been, but music wasn't there yet" which is what i think about "Land of Confusion". But, I also feel that Phil Collins always does a good job
I love that cover too. I love how, when they do cover songs, they put their little spin on it but mostly stay true to the original song. It shows respect and appreciation but also wanting to bring it to their fans who may not have heard the original before. I loved Genesis and Phil Collins as a kid so when I heard Disturbed's version I thought, this is how covers should be. Respect the original yet add a bit of your flavor to it. 😎👍
Listening to the unedited version will reveal that the song is about child abuse and how that traumatic experience creates a legacy of darkness and pain with the abused that will continue if the abused can't reconcile the experience through treatment and become a cycle breaker. This song is deeply personal for me as a child abuse survivor and father. I refused to expose my children to "the sickness" that was within me, and through years and years of counseling - I can recognize when the scars I carry begin to metastasize into negative reactions and behavior that could be harmful to my wife or kids. It's a daily burden and struggle, but it's a personal war I fight with unyielding determination to protect my family from the dark heritage my mother bestowed upon me. Through my counseling I've discovered that I have a condition that is called complex PTSD - which is common with victims of child abuse. I'm happy to share that I am able to recognize triggers and segregate myself as needed to process my responses in much safer and healthier ways. I'm also transparent about my condition with my wife and children through age appropriate discussions that remove the taboo of the issue and inform my loved ones on what I'm experiencing and at the same time understand the importance of mental health. That being said, this song still shakes me to my core - especially when the unedited version launches into his rage against his mother/abuser. It stays with us all of our lives. Thank you, David - for capturing the unspoken pain and rage that victims of abuse carry with them throughout their lives.
I still have nightmares about the time my dad tied me to a tree on top of the hill outside our house, during a heavy lightning storm. He wanted to teach my sisters a lesson, I hadn't done anything wrong but I'm male and he'd never wanted male children so I was the focus of his abuse, my sisters got some too but no where near as much as I did and I welcomed that so they didn't have to experience it. My dad's favourite method of 'training' (his name for it) was either a horse whip until he drew blood or cigarettes put out on my back. I beat the crap out of him when I was 15-16, threw him through his shop window and I haven't seen him since. I like to think I took the lessons learned from my parents and did the exact opposite with my kids and they've turned out well, they love me and I adore them so I think my parents taught me how to be a good dad by their being terrible parents. Not exaggerating here: my dad tried to sell my eldest sister when she was 4. He arranged for a French family to buy her, the price was £500 and a used Ford Cortina. His plan fell through when my uncle and grandad found out and threatened to make him dissappear. He didn't try to sell any of us after that but he would regularly tape us I to our beds so he could go to the pub while my mum was at work. He beat my mum too, she lost twins due to a beating from him so while I do resent my mum a bit, I also understand her lack of protection for us. I have nothing but contempt for my dad and I swear, when he dies I am going to the funeral and I'm going to urinate on his corpse.
What I adore is Elizabeth being entirely mesmerized by the music, yet remaining clinical. You can always tell when someone truly loves all types of music, versus just saying they do.
One of my favourite moments in these videos is when something awesome catches her so unawares she just cracks up laughing & has to rewind cos she missed the bit! 😆
It would be great Elizabeth if you could arrange one of your interviews with David, he is a nice guy and very interesting. Talking vocals with him would be good to hear, I think he had some serious training in his younger years. Just want to say that your reaction videos are head and shoulders above any of the others we see on the tube, enough to say that yours is the only one I now watch.
I do suggest again! Poets of the Fall - “Carnival of Rust” Alexander Theatre sessions version Thumbs up for PotF, or if you’re curious and don’t know who they are. Or just because please and thank you. Edit: holy cow that’s a lot of thumbs.
@@TheCharismaticVoice never give up. Never surrender! 😜 I’m actually kind of having fun thinking of more creative comments for the suggestion. Hopefully I can gather more thumbs. In a totally non-creepy way, of course.
@@mrcreeper6177 same. Realistically, you could choose any song from them and holy crap. They’re way underrated here in the US. Don’t worry, I’ll keep suggesting it until we get enough votes and it hits the top of her list.
"Imagine the sound of 100 people around you all coughing up a hairball at the same time" had me in tears. I had to pause the video to wait for the laughter to subside.
20+ years after this song came out and I’m still singing “ooh ah ah ah ah” daily. Multiple times. This and the song from the Little Mermaid have literally been stuck in my head for over 20 years.
I think "The Night" is a great showcase of the facets of David's vocals - the power, the beauty, and the rhythm. I firmly believe it's one of their best songs from one of their best albums.
Man this song always brings back memories. In 2001 I went to a Marilyn Manson concert and Disturbed were the opening act for it. I wasn't even the biggest Manson fan, but my friends wanted to go so badly so I joined. This was on the height of Marilyn Mansons popularity(gods guns and government tour) and both delivered an absolute spectacular show. Disturbed was rather unknown at that time but the crowd loved them! And the show was pretty fitting for their name, the lead singer got executed via electric chair at the start of their show! And in the end there were staff member distributing demo tapes (yes, still cassette tapes) for a new up and coming band called "Linkin Park" who just released their first music video a few month ago! It was such an insane time to be young and into the whole concert/live metal scene.
Aw, man. I caught the very last add-on show for the Guns God & Government tour, but since it was a last-minute addition, there was no opening band (also no assigned seating, so I did score front-row by standing in line for 14 hours). Fortunately, Disturbed had toured with Korn (I think it was the Family Values tour) the year prior, so I was lucky enough to have seen them then, and caught Linkin Park when they toured with Adema the year after. Goddamn the early 2000's were a great time to see metal shows, back when tickets were only $30-50 bucks and you could actually get them before online bots by just camping out at the ticket booth the night before they went on sale. I got my kid Meshugga tickets for their 18th birthday, and they were like $200 each because you could only buy them from 3rd party sellers. No kid today could ever afford to go to every show that runs through town they way we could do with a little planning, which is tragic, because live shows are the absolute best way to experience music.
I was about to lambaste you for inaccuracy -- LP and disturbed were already huge by then! Looked it up. I can't believe hybrid theory had only just been released. My introduction to metal/rock just happened to coincide with the rise of these legends. Fortunate indeed.
I've heard that the sounds at the beginning he did as part of a warm up for his vocals and the producer was like "yo, do that" (paraphrasing of course haha)
Alex, I just saw a UA-cam short with an interview of draiman and he said almost exactly what you said. I will leave my original comment so everyone knows what a dumb ass I am 🤣
Fun fact. Ooh wa ah ah ah ah just happened one day in practice, originally it was just pause for effect. David did an interview and said when he heard the beat it was very primal and the sound just came out, everyone was like wtf was that and the rest is history. That sound made them stars
You've basically experienced Disturbed in reverse in term of their career. Sound of Silence took David a lot of work to get the gravely part out of his voice because it is a natural part of his voice. Songs like Down with the Sickness, Inside the Fire, Indestructible, and Pain Redefined are prime Disturbed songs that showcase David's amazing vocal capabilities which are unique only to him.
I would argue that David Grohl also shares this dual beautiful baritone juxtaposed against the screamo vocal fry stuff. But yeah, this is guy is a vocal legend to me too. A fantastic singer.
Ah, this brings back memories. This was from their first album. This bass player (nicknamed Fuzz) was asked to leave the band after their second album, and I auditioned with the band to replace him. Obviously, I didn't get the gig as they chose a guy that they previously knew and toured with (from a different band), but it's still a great memory of mine! A few of my favorite Disturbed songs that you should check out are "Prayer" from their second album, and I also really love the song "The Light" because of its message. That song is on their 2015 album Immortalized.
The biggest reason he has such a unique sound is he did damage his chords years ago. A lot of people also forget that he is classically trained. The man and the whole band has so much talent!!! One of the biggest reasons why they have been able to have such a long career is because of their ever changing sounds.
Their "ever changing" music is due to one thing. Their growth as humans. Not sure of your age but are you the same person now than what you were 20-30 years ago? I'm not....thank god. Essentially yes....I still go nuts when some banging ass music comes on. I still hold some of the beliefs I did when I was 20. But I have evolved greatly as well. If you dont you get left behind. Selling out? No....not by any means. Wising up? Hell yes.
Apparently, after being expelled from three different yeshivas and blowing up his high school rabbi's van, his family realized he wasn't cut out for the seminary. So he then took his training and angst and went to rock.
I remember when this song came out, it was a game changer. People hadn't heard anything like it. You NEED to check out Remember, IMHO it's his best vocal performance.
I second remember it’s one of his best “holy crap” he did what? I wouldn’t pick my jaw off the floor when I saw him do it live. If you can find a good live version do it!
“What’s it like when you’ve got 100 people around you trying to make that sound?” Uhm, I’ve never been to a Disturbed show that just had 100 people in it. That entire Stadium/Amphitheater/Lawn is singing with him and it’s glorious!
I agree with Elizabeth's comment at one point that one of the multiple (3 or more) singing styles that David Draiman was incorporating seemed to include among them a reggae-like singing style. I'd never thought of that before in the decades I've listened to Disturbed, but it does seem to be a good description of one of Draiman's possible influences to his singing styles.
the cool thing about the beginning of the song is that originally it was purely instrumental there was supposed to be a pause but it was meant to build tension for the rest of the song. One day during rehearsals David decided to let out the iconic "oh-ah-ah-ah", the band members stopped playing and they were all like "what the hell was that?" and David thought he had done something wrong but the rest of the group loved it and an unforgettable intro was born.
Heh. Elizabeth almost short-circuited trying to analyze David's vocals. She vocalized so many things we, as Disturbed fans, inherently understand. Without the constraints of familiarity she pinpoints within seconds the nuance in their sound. She totally geeked out, bless her heart.
You already did his cover of Sound of Silence. But imagine what those of us who'd been listening to Disturbed - with every album at least a similar style to this song - experienced when we heard him cover that.
I love this channel. Not only technical expertise in spades, but passion and enthusiasm for the craft and enjoyment of music, in all its forms and varieties. I've heard you sing and it's beautiful, but even when you speak, your voice is so rich and colourful, so full of character, your excitement for discovering these songs shines. Thank you so much for your content.
I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but I think this song changed the entire course of my sons life when he was two. We were driving home from his daycare and this song came on the radio. I left it on because I wanted to see his reaction to the “Ohhh-ah-ah-ah”. When that dropped the look on his face completely changed and he kept trying to make that noise over and over. After that he made me play this song for him probably 500 times. It’s such a great song that I never got sick of hearing it. He’s 7 now. Still loves this song and definitely has an affinity for metal over all other genres of music.
One of the best things about having children is sharing music you love with them! Whether they grow into it or out of said music, the infancy to pre-school time is precious! My daughter is almost 3 and I've played her a variety of music form Steve Wonder & Tina Turner to SOAD & Little Dragon and to see her sing these variety of songs is just precious. 🙃
I love the faces this woman makes when listening to the music. Adorable and sweet and intelligent. Id love to see her face reviewing Steal Hearts "Never Let You Go" when Miljenko lets it rip.
@@based9930 you OBVIOUSLY ARE INCAPABLE of recognizing the sheer awe, envelopment and knowledge with which she totally experiences music! 🙄🤦♂️ Sad. Sorry that you probably cannot either. Find your OWN passion in life and don’t waste your energy shitting on others who have out of your own immature petty jealousy.
@@based9930 I do not believe so. I think she is quite genuine and loves music so much that it greatly affects her. She is a sophisticated and trained listener and very nuanced in her understanding and skills with voice. I think her number of views are strong because she is high class and knows of what she speaks. You can learn a lot from her. She has a pure approach to music and is quite open minded. I would think you would want to consider giving her more credit rather than taking a cynical approach of assuming she is trying to manipulate us all with facial expressions.
Still hands down one of the best Disturbed songs to date (shame about the cut-out though). I highly recommend checking out The Light and Into the Fire (studio versions) by Disturbed as well, fantastic songs with great messages in them. Or if you're looking for something that's just more headbanging fun, check out Stricken or Ten Thousand Fists.
I was never a huge Disturbed fan, until I saw them live at a concert. There is indeed something special about thousands of people screaming "Oooh-wah-ah-ah-ah". Dramain's stage presence is out of this world!
Your initial reaction/enjoyment to the beginning of the song and his distortion vocals is great and was literally all of us when this song came out. We were all blasting it in our cars trying to make those sounds.
The abuse-triggered, Jekyll and Hyde story in the song has always been haunting to me. The musical aspect is awesome...one of the best build intros ever.
Wow! You are so right that this is a Jekyll-and-Hyde story. I've listened to the song a zillion times, but you placed it exactly right. Thank you for your insight.
4 months late, but I highly recommend “Indestructible” and “Land of Confusion” (Genesis cover) and “The Vengeful One” all have fantastic vocals in my opinion. EDIT: David Draiman has publicly stated the song is a reference to the nanny state created by government with mother being the metaphorical representation of that, and the “beast unleashed” are the oppressed people fighting back.
I was at the very first ever Disturbed show- it was in a bar on the South Side of Chicago- they played "Down With the Sickness" just like you're hearing it now. I was blown away more than I have ever been in my life. Ive seen them at least 30 times- 25 of those have been in BARS! with 100/200 PEOPLE!!!! I am an ORIGINAL member of their "Street Crew".
He has such a percussive voice. It’s very straight, very clean, and it cuts. It cuts exactly where it needs to, I love the way he enunciates. He keeps his vowels generally “normal” (not particularly wide nor narrow), but the way he delivers them is how they stand out. Unlike Brent in Shinedown, who is my number one example of someone with very wide vowels, or Amy Lee who has generally narrow or tall vowels.
This is the censored official version right? You absolutely should also checkout the original uncensored version - because the censored part reveals the secrets of the lyrics and meaning of the song :)
I agree with this 100% but also caution this piece was censored for a reason as it can be disturbing to hear. With that said I do feel it truly solidifies the context of this song.
@@chiefhandker9432 Agreed. I get _why_ it was censored, but it removes the catharsis for the whole story that's being told. An outlet for all that energy that is built up over the songs duration.
Listening to the description of the 'Fun Noises' was just hilarious. I was shaking with laughter and had to stop the playback until I could listen to the rest of it. Now I want to see the reaction video of David D watching Liz react to this. That would be a riot.
She made me laugh out loud! But I've been hearing this song for years. Funny story, I bought a few goats in Ohio and driving back to Ky over the bridge in Cincinnati. The bridge has gaps that bounced the truck a bit and IT WAS IN TIME TO THIS SONG! I had the goats in the back with a camper top and I could see girls in the back riding along. One doe (doe is a deer and also a female goat) has these loonng black ears and the motion is making her nod her head- WITH THE MUSIC! So this black headed, long eared, Boer goat, *head banging* to the song with her ears swinging, I so wish I could have video of the memory. Just something you had to be there, I can't hear this song without remembering Raven rocking out in the truck laying back in the hay. It was just really cool for me anyway.....
I really found the full version cathartic, as someone with an abusive mother. The entire song really spoke to me, and helped me realize that I wasn’t alone.
The most disturbing thing to me is that culturally, we'd prefer to air a neutered version of the song in the radio to hide the fact that this shit is happening to people. What a wildly misguided attempt at protection.
I had the opposite reaction and got really triggered the first time I heard that part. I feel it in a really visceral way that makes me feel physically ill. To the point that, as much as I love this song, I cannot interact with that part. I was happy to see the pinned comment that said this was the cut version so I knew I could enjoy it without the tension of watching for the part I would need to skip. I am glad this song exists in its entirety and brings catharsis to many people in that form, but I am also glad both options exist.
@@AleshaM30I'm the same way as OP. but my mom is the same way as you (ironically) As somebody who's mother was abusive, I related to the anger and pain in his voice, but could completely understanding why my mom couldn't bear the sounds of it.
Disturbed has a song about suicide prevention "A Reason to Fight" that I think is a great choice. Not the official version, but the live compilation. It's very deep and emotional. Sept 4th through Sept 10 2022 is the next suicide prevention week, would be a great choice to review at that time. Thanks, Richard
I wanted to mention this song too. Helped me through my toughest times ❤ if that would be their only song, I would be okay with that... but thanks to heavens it's not the only one.
Please @The Charismatic Voice .... Please Elizabeth do this song....I've included a link to it so that you don't need to go searching for it.... ua-cam.com/video/gRGRduyCy_M/v-deo.html
Disturbed as a whole has brought a lot of attention to mental health issues through the years. I have seen them live a few times and they always kill it. You should take a look (not necessarily react) to "Hold On To Memories".
Not sure if I’m remembering correctly but wasn’t it Into The Fire or something that was written because of someone David knew who had committed suicide? On a different note, Hold On To Memories I discovered in such awful circumstances as it was played at my friends sons funeral who was lost to mental health, but it brought to me a truly beautiful song I could listen to and remember my friends son fondly.
For another Disturbed song, check out “Inside The Fire.” He really showcases his heavy vocals throughout as well as his range and breath control. Also, I’d love to hear your take on some Geddy Lee vocals from Rush. He was known for having the shrill, high tenor/alto vocals from the ‘70s and ‘80s
Oh my, I love the way you've been able to just break down the beginning of the song into tones and rhythms. Hear it musically for what it is and not just view it as noise. Thank you for being able to point out how songs like this are very structured whether intended or not and follow music principles that bring it all together.
Tons of people: "Haha, let's troll her and send her Disturbed" Elizabeth: Proceeds to do a deep analysis of everything that is great about Draiman's voice.
I have been binge-watching your videos, and I have to say, I LOVE how expressive your face is while watching and listening to the music! I can clearly see the sheer delight you are experiencing. I love great lyrics as many do... but when emotion is conveyed through instruments and vocal expression, well, that is just pure magic!
Yeah that look of pure shock like "wait....what???" Sound of silence by disturbed is only other vid I saw of her reviewing and at times I thought she was about to start singing herself!
She is incredibly perceptive even when hearing these songs for the first time. Draiman's sort of scat/rapping/atonal sounds were probably influenced to some degree by Jonathan Davis of Korn, whose own weird sounds were in turn was influenced by harsh, raspy Jamaican reggae vocalists, and she seems to have picked up on that almost immediately.
Korn would be a great band to follow up with if you like Disturbed. Shoots and Ladders, Freak on a Leash, Falling Away From Me, their cover of Another Brick in the Wall. Pretty much anything is good. Also Godsmack. Voodoo, I Stand Alone or the video for Unforgettable, which is so inspiring for upcoming musicians.
I got to see them live back on November 6 2021 in Indiana. And i can say, when the beat drops for this song, everyone looses their minds. It is one of the most amazing feeling to be there and just be lost in the emergy of the crowd. Theres an energy you can feel in the air that just takes you with it. Highly recommend it.
I agree. I have seen them live from about 2006-2018 like six or so times. Every time they start this, the energy is just amazing. Best feeling. Usually one of the ways they end their set which is just such a great feeling to go out on. (Doesn’t hurt I have been listening to them and this song since the album itself came out in 2000.)
Fact. David Draiman has a degree in Operatic Singing from the Chicago School of Music. This is why his voice is so strong and well controlled Elizabeth. So much like you, he's classically trained. Many Vocalist in Metal have an Operatic or Classical style to there Vocal Approach because it's powerful, allows you to evoke emotions clearly, and sing clearly. So there ya go. Take Care Elizabeth.
I just saw this video.my brother was fighting cancer for twelve years. And he was so afraid of all the changes his body went through because of the illness .this song means so much to me .and it helped me through some very hard times with his passing love it
for the interpretation of the song and its meaning I would 100% go back and listen to the edit and what was cut because it will change the tone of the song IMO. keep up the amazing work
I'm only at the intro of the video, but after binging a lot of them the past two days I finally realized that you remind me of a Disney princess. You're such an animated person and I love the pure joy/excitement you radiate with ever little thing you notice. :D Thanks for the great reactions and expert analyzations. It's been a pleasure watching your videos.
I do have to say every time I hear the edited version I feel robbed emotionally of the energetic conclusion of this song. I would agree with the recommendations to listen to it as well.
I've seen them live at least a dozen times, he switches between clean and distorted vocals with ease, and yes the distorted vocals are used to convey the break he is undergoing.
I really hope you get the chance to do a conversation with David Draiman at some point. As a metal fan I go back and forth between being a fan and not with much of his work, but I am happy to admit that regardless of personal taste things, he's an incredibly talented singer/songwriter. His version of Sound of Silence is better than the original in my opinion. I'd be fascinated to hear what you guys would talk about from the past interviews with him I've heard.
Your reaction is the exact same reaction we ALL had when we first heard it. It makes you smile, it's very fun! And it's a nice heavy groove. And most importantly, it's catchy! The first time I ever heard this song, my uncle had to babysit us, but the night before he went to some cool underground metal concert in Oklahoma City. He grabbed a demo tape and he just had to show us the next morning. I will never forget my uncle popping in this tape and blowing our Tiny minds. He too initially laughed at the OH AH AH AH AHs as he showed us kids the song, it sounded like a big monkey to me and I giggled too, but we never stopped banging our heads. After the night was over, when our mom came to pick us up. My uncle said 'Mark my words. Disturbed is going to be the next big band' and my uncle was 100% right, but i don't know if he even knew just how huge they would become ! Not only does that song still play on the radio, they have tons of other hits always coming out!!
I highly recommend finding the uncut version. The part that was cut out gives a lot of imagery and meaning to the song. It even gives you an idea of where the feelings are coming from. But as their name says, it is disturbing. Im very disappointed that people are so weak hearted about music that it was forced to be cut out.
@@jacobzachary5631 what would you consider "family appropriate" music because unless you're listening to Jesus music nothing is family friendly an tbh who cares if it is or not,not like people are beating there parents while listening to it or acting out on what the song is tailing about an I think the abused should stand up against there abusers take a bat to there knees... just like a bully stand up an fight an they will not mess with you
@@jacobzachary5631 what does that even mean "family friendly"? What is that? The Wiggles? Just because it's in a style that you don't particularly like. You have an amazing depth of musical knowledge and compositional understanding that you effortlessly share in an immensely “charismatic” way. At the same time, you delve into genres and songs that many people cast aside as rubbish or subpar music. Thank you!!
I just started watching your channel yesterday, I live for the pure joy you exhibit when you react. The excitement when you analyze is infectious and you validate why I love the songs that I do.
You should get him on for an interview. I saw them at a small club with a few hundred people before they were doing ozzfest the next day and we had a few beers with him and he's a cool dude.
One of their best, that i feel really captures who they are as a band that I'd highly recommend listening to is "inside the fire" which is just brilliant in vocals and also in its message (but be warned it deals with some pretty dark themes like self harm and suicide)
This song is straight up bad ass I crank the heck out of it over and over again every time I hear it, Regardless of whether a person don’t like this band which everybody likes different stuff , but I think David is an incredible vocalist this guy is actually classically trained vocalist
Gotta say, as much as I enjoy these vids for our host's expert critiques, it's the facial reactions that I get the biggest kick out of. On too many reaction channels you get the clear sense that the host is emoting. Putting on an act. Exaggerating. But Elizabeth's always feel sincere to me. No acting here, just genuine reaction. I know this, because I pretty much made the same face the first time I heard this song and heard those opening grunts. Like, "What the hell's that sound coming out of this dude's throat?" Great stuff.
I must admit, I just heard you critique the song "sound of silence" from that point I became a fan. Just being able to see a different perspective on a song and video that I truly like. But, then seeing it through a different set of lenses made me want to listen to it once more. Seeing so much more of what is truly going on. Your expressive tone on your face. Makes me see a true love for music! No matter what type it is. The only word I can use to justify it is: True. True love and compassion for music!
That's the big letdown of this video.
I was so bummed to not get the best part of the song.
When the "beast" let loose.
I was also disappointed that part was not included for the additional context it provides. Artists complete ideal and all...
True! Really heavy and a sad "story" in there.
Let's hope she'll talk about it in the opening of her next video.
I hope she hears the uncut version too, cause that's such a big part of the song
She start as a singing coach, and finish as a complete METALHEAD. She is ours now and forever :-)
All she needs to do now is read the Book of Heavy Metal, and her journey to the Dark Side will be complete... ^_^
Remember forever!!

This song always reminds me of the first night out with one of my now oldest friends at Eddies #8 in Brum. She thought I was quite mild mannered till this came on and I was jumping off the bar.
he really hates that song.
She's right, though. Every time I've heard this song in a crowd, everyone is making those noises along with David.
That sound awesome

I was like, what the fuck was that? lolol.. glory days!! xo

I remember seeing him on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" and he made all of them sound like High School dropouts!
He didn't put the vocals on separate tracks. He actually switches back and forth on the fly, which is incredibly impressive in my opinion. You can see him switching the vocal tone instantly in live performances.
For sure he does that live, but on official produced recordings everyone does separate tracks. Makes it easier to get the song just right
Just with this video I am learning that he is singing all of the vocals.
Before now I thought it was at least two different band members singing.

Disturbed live are my drug of choice. I think I’ve seen them close to 40 times now 😂 one tour I went to 4 shows in 6 days, up front on the rail each time.
I was them when they were just an opening band for X-fest in Dayton OH and it was still the best concert experience I've ever had. Just amazing
Yes!!! Saw them live from this album tour in St. Louis. The concert changed my life along with this album.
They were amazing in Oklahoma City!
If I recall correctly, it was supposed to be just silence in that part and he felt he needed to do something about it lmao
That. Is the funnest fact.
Totally agree
@@williamswiniuch7527 Would be great to see her do a analysis of both the Genesis and Disturbed versions.
I'd go with Prayer personally.
Why havent you had a comment yet 🤔 your the only one who explained i think, well im commenting, thanks for explaining 😁
Well said and so sad. And you so eloquently and throughly described the help you have sought. Hope this helps others through your transparency.
Your not alone their are many of us who fight that sickness everyday myself included
am father and survivor, too..gods, this whole story sounds like my story.
“Ten Thousand Fists” would be my next rec for Disturbed. This is the band that got me watching your channel 🙂

One of their most UNDERRATED songs
One of their best for sure!
Fun fact: the “ooaaaahhhahaahah” wasn’t originally planned. One day while in the studio the energy built up in draiman just came out like that.

Disturbed got me trough a tough time in my life. His lyrics and screams echoed my pain. He expressed what my soul felt. So glad you did this!
Repetitive limited vocal phrasing!
Completely agree, I was going to recommend those songs for her to look at next. Stricken is also a really good one
Imo their best songs are "I'm alive" and "Decadence". I loved the whole Believe Album tho. Oh - and dont forget about Remember - its such a classic!
@@sarahsen9300 Remember is my favorite Disturbed song!
I second Prayer, one of my faves. I also really like Uninvited Guest
Wising up? Hell yes.
Do people actually forget that he's classically trained? This seems to be mentioned in every comment section.
Well they had to change, the dude couldn’t do that earlier stuff after he add surgery to fix the damage cords
I was told he was originally vocally trained as a traditional Jewish Cantor, and his bass and mid tones are amazing. I love the gravel of his voice.
People too often forget about that song. It's a damn good one.
I second remember it’s one of his best “holy crap” he did what? I wouldn’t pick my jaw off the floor when I saw him do it live. If you can find a good live version do it!
Honestly "Remember" is like top 3 of their songs for me
“What’s it like when you’ve got 100 people around you trying to make that sound?”
Uhm, I’ve never been to a Disturbed show that just had 100 people in it. That entire Stadium/Amphitheater/Lawn is singing with him and it’s glorious!
Yep, disturbed plays in front of thousands, even abroad
I heard it once at Ascend in Nashville, TN. Outdoors, that sound is just primal as hell, especially shouted by at least 3,000 individuals.
From what I heard Louder than Life had over 40,000 people in attendance. It was almost from on side to the other for them.

Same!
the cool thing about the beginning of the song is that originally it was purely instrumental there was supposed to be a pause but it was meant to build tension for the rest of the song. One day during rehearsals David decided to let out the iconic "oh-ah-ah-ah", the band members stopped playing and they were all like "what the hell was that?" and David thought he had done something wrong but the rest of the group loved it and an unforgettable intro was born.
wow, never knew that, cool fact!
I have loved this band and this song for 20 years and never knew this. That's awesome. Thanks for that fun fact.

I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but I think this song changed the entire course of my sons life when he was two. We were driving home from his daycare and this song came on the radio. After that he made me play this song for him probably 500 times. It’s such a great song that I never got sick of hearing it. He’s 7 now. Still loves this song and definitely has an affinity for metal over all other genres of music.

Yes! What an amazing song. I actually haven't heard it for a good while....wow...what a masterpiece.
The Light is a great shout. I always loved Criminal too
Wait, did this cut out the section where he's screaming at his mom? "Why do you always have to be such a b..." that part is missing isn't it?
@@kennylaysh2776 Yeah that's the part that was cut out.
@@kennylaysh2776 It's a stupid part, it should stay cut out... It ruins the flow of an otherwise magnificent metal song.
I really appreciate how she doesent judge the type of music as good or bad, she interrupt everything so beautifully.
wait to you see she DNF’d one of the new Avenged Sevenfold songs
"Hold onto Memories" is another of their not usual songs. It is amazing. I love all of their music.
The abuse-triggered, Jekyll and Hyde story in the song has always been haunting to me. The musical aspect is awesome...one of the best build intros ever.
Underrated comment my guy, always made me feel like he was singing to me about my life
Wow! You are so right that this is a Jekyll-and-Hyde story. I've listened to the song a zillion times, but you placed it exactly right. Thank you for your insight.
@@scifiwriter6092 no problem at all....
what a great song
I don't think I ever got how much voices differ in songs until I saw someone reacting to each change.
Sound of silence
@@darthneumann she already did that one
i really enjoyed “Guarded” would take anything the hear it for the first time again
Oh yes, The vengeful one and land of confusion. That would be a treat.
I would add animal to the list
In the extended version the "dream" part is really hard emotionally, the song seems to be missing so much without it imho
Was just gonna say, what a tragedy, this is the edited version, it misses the whole buildup!! Bah
100% this
I agree with this 100% but also caution this piece was censored for a reason as it can be disturbing to hear. With that said I do feel it truly solidifies the context of this song.
@@joshuadickinson2214 Yeah I first heard it when I was like 12 and it definitely was um....Disturbing :P
Yeah she missed the fun part of this song.
Thats a great idea....artist reaction to reaction videos. Would be cool to hear the real story behind the songs.
That would be hilarious and cute to watch haha. Someone make this happen!
Imagine her listening to Freak On a Leash by Korn
She should listen to Sebastian Bach on “Quicksand Jesus”
Would love to hear her dissection of Coheed and Cambria. Claudio has such an unexpected range that her analysis would be pretty interesting I think.
Agreed, he has such a unique voice.
Love Claudio. Coheed would be a great choice.
Big agree from me. But what song should we recommend for her first experience to Coheed and Cambria?
@@ShadowedMage my vote goes to Welcome Home.
@@AleshaM30I'm the same way as OP. but my mom is the same way as you (ironically)
As somebody who's mother was abusive, I related to the anger and pain in his voice, but could completely understanding why my mom couldn't bear the sounds of it.
“Ooooo waa aah aah aah?” Her doing the opening vocal was the cutest thing ever
I laughed so hard at that my son stepped away from his game to see what I was laughing about.
It took me a two days of practice to get as good as she did in like 2 or 3 tries. Gosh darn actual singers.
‘Strangely catchy” … 😂😂😂 I was rolling
Love this breakdown. I think Stricken is one of my favorite vocal performances of his, as well as Ten Thousand Fists
Disturbed has a song about suicide prevention "A Reason to Fight" that I think is a great choice. Not the official version, but the live compilation. It's very deep and emotional. Sept 4th through Sept 10 2022 is the next suicide prevention week, would be a great choice to review at that time. Thanks, Richard
also inside the fire
I wanted to mention this song too. Helped me through my toughest times ❤ if that would be their only song, I would be okay with that... but thanks to heavens it's not the only one.
Please @The Charismatic Voice .... Please Elizabeth do this song....I've included a link to it so that you don't need to go searching for it.... ua-cam.com/video/gRGRduyCy_M/v-deo.html
It’s so cool to see how someone how has knowledge, reacts and EXPLAINS in such a sympathetic way to such cool songs! ❤️
I saw Disturbed live on the second stage of Ozzfest in 2000. They were awesome! David is a fantastic showman as well.
Hold on to the Memories is a fantastic choice for a listen
For another Disturbed song, check out “Inside The Fire.” He really showcases his heavy vocals throughout as well as his range and breath control.
Also, I’d love to hear your take on some Geddy Lee vocals from Rush. He was known for having the shrill, high tenor/alto vocals from the ‘70s and ‘80s
I remember the first time I heard inside the fire, the music video at the same time. And man what an experience! One of my favorites for sure.
I love how the vocals change with the lyrics.
Looking at my own reflection when suddenly 😈 IT CHANGES, VIOLENTLY, IT CHANGES 😈
Now you have to listen to "INDESTRUCTIBLE" for us veteran's on veterans day November 11th
I would second this for Veteran's Day!
Or a ffdp song!
Good idea! Or wrong side of heaven!
I would love this. I listened to that song before leaving the wire; it was ritualistic.
Elizabeth convinced Disturbed that they were just perturbed.
I'm pretty sure she also taught Corey Taylor how to tie a Slipknot.
@@oglschmitt g l Schmidt instructed Elvis Presley on the Fine Art of making fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches.

Disturbed: making angry noises sounding creepy.
Elizabeth: These are fun sounds!
lmao, I love it.
Oh my, I love the way you've been able to just break down the beginning of the song into tones and rhythms. Hear it musically for what it is and not just view it as noise. Thank you for being able to point out how songs like this are very structured whether intended or not and follow music principles that bring it all together.
Her excitement at the beginning is so cute. This song is so amazing.
The word that has always come to my mind in regards to this song is “primal”.
Tons of people: "Haha, let's troll her and send her Disturbed"
Elizabeth: Proceeds to do a deep analysis of everything that is great about Draiman's voice.
I mean the man was a choir singer when he was younger, he definitely knows how to sing. :D
Also it's 2K21 and she never heard Disturbed before??? LOL
@@MaryanoffTeam yes(?), like many people. Disturbed is not even near the most popular band she ever reacted to in this channel anyway
LOL She seems so innocent that I'm almost like, "hey guys... maybe not _Down With the Sickness_ ... that's a lot to handle." haha
Now we get her with A Little Piece of Heaven
I have been binge-watching your videos, and I have to say, I LOVE how expressive your face is while watching and listening to the music! I can clearly see the sheer delight you are experiencing. I love great lyrics as many do... but when emotion is conveyed through instruments and vocal expression, well, that is just pure magic!
Yeah that look of pure shock like "wait....what???" Sound of silence by disturbed is only other vid I saw of her reviewing and at times I thought she was about to start singing herself!
She is incredibly perceptive even when hearing these songs for the first time. Draiman's sort of scat/rapping/atonal sounds were probably influenced to some degree by Jonathan Davis of Korn, whose own weird sounds were in turn was influenced by harsh, raspy Jamaican reggae vocalists, and she seems to have picked up on that almost immediately.
also by Anthony Keidis of RHCP
Korn would be a great band to follow up with if you like Disturbed. Shoots and Ladders, Freak on a Leash, Falling Away From Me, their cover of Another Brick in the Wall. Pretty much anything is good.
Also Godsmack. Voodoo, I Stand Alone or the video for Unforgettable, which is so inspiring for upcoming musicians.
I was just listening to Jonathans isolated vocals when he scats/beatboxes in that song. It sounds so crazy in silence! 🤘😝💕
I was about to suggest Korn, especially one of the songs with the scats.
someone needs to tell her though to never listen to daddy. her poor soul wouldn't be able to handle it
Twist 😆, Helmet in the bush, Seed, Somebody Somone, Make me bad, or why not Pretty or Daddy..🤔
@@ASLLover666 This lady is a flower and must be protected.
And he was so afraid of all the changes his body went through because of the illness .this song means so much to me .and it helped me through some very hard times with his passing love it
This song converted me to a metal head. This song is legendary.
for the interpretation of the song and its meaning I would 100% go back and listen to the edit and what was cut because it will change the tone of the song IMO. keep up the amazing work
Yea. The “mommy” part gives a lot of context that’s missing in the edit
Yes! She clearly isn't getting the message here. I would love to see her face when she hears the breakdown
Ya beat me to it! That part freaked me the F out when I bought the CD back in the day after only hearing the radio edit!
The full version would probably shock her. It shocked me, when I first heard it.
I'm frankly shocked that there are still people that have yet to hear this song. It has been everywhere for like 20 years.
Check out “The Light” and “A Reason To Fight”. Just like all of their songs…amazing music and vocals, and an even better message!
The live version of "a reason to fight" never fails to bring out the onion cutting ninjas
I highly recommend finding the uncut version. The part that was cut out gives a lot of imagery and meaning to the song. It even gives you an idea of where the feelings are coming from. But as their name says, it is disturbing. Im very disappointed that people are so weak hearted about music that it was forced to be cut out.
This… style is very different…. But also not family friendly
Pussification. What a joke. It's not even the song without that part. Period.

I love the aggression in this song. it's so raw
You really need to have David On your show I don’t know if he drinks tea or not but I’m sure he we can figure out something to drink
He's mentioned drinking tea in at least one interview. How it is prepared or what kind? Not a clue.
You should get him on for an interview. I saw them at a small club with a few hundred people before they were doing ozzfest the next day and we had a few beers with him and he's a cool dude.
I love how disturbed has made it so that whenever you listen to one of their songs, your constantly listening for the random noise!
One of their best, that i feel really captures who they are as a band that I'd highly recommend listening to is "inside the fire" which is just brilliant in vocals and also in its message
(but be warned it deals with some pretty dark themes like self harm and suicide)
Seconding inside the fire!
yup it's dark, but then the concept of Down With The Sickness is pretty dark in of itself, in it's case Physical Abuse.
