I saw them in El Paso in ‘75. I took a couple of guys from the base in Alamogordo, 90 miles away. We got so loaded that we ended up going home the wrong way. I didn’t realize it until the sign said Dallas a couple hundred miles ahead.
The lyrics includes some parts from an earlier version of the song. I guess Ozzy forgot the later alterations in the heat of the moment. Fun fact. If you pay attention to it you can see that Bill Ward uses the thick ends of his drumsticks on the kit, for extra power. This performance is a excellent showcase for his inventive drumming, never using a drum break twice. My favorite stick handler for sure. In my opinion he's too underrated in the pantheon of early heavy music.
I have been completely impressed with him every time we've listened to them. His drums stand out even in the studio tracks. Thanks for the info. Did not notice the part about the thick ends of the sticks.
Factory accident. At the age of 17, Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand (his fret-board hand, since he is left-handed) in an industrial accident on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory.
I'm loving your introduction to the music I grew up with. Black Sabbath reveals truths that weren't popular during the hippie era. Timeless lyrics still relevant. Please give a listen to "Into the Void" off Master of Reality.
Tony eye owe me chopped the tips of his fingers off and made his own prosthetics and fastened them on his fingers additionally they tune down the key they play in which loosens the strings more so he can play. thats why they have that crunchy sound. It is a miracle he can even play let alone very well.
Tony Iommi, the guitarist, created his own prosthetic fingertips after his fretting hand fingertips got cut off in an industrial accident. He also tuned his guitar lower so the strings would have less tension to make it easier to fret. Since the whole band had to tune lower this had a lot to do with their signature sound. Even handicapped like this, Iommi is one of the best guitarists out there and is credited with inventing many of the standard riffs in metal music. Love your channel!
Thank you so much! Yes, we watched a video a viewer sent us that told about his accident. It's fascinating how he could accomplish all that he did after that.
Ozzy was always a wild man. I saw him in 1984 at the Texas Jam in the Houston Astrodome after he left Sabbath. 6 bands that day and his band was the 3rd or 4th to play. They were only a few songs in to their set and Ozzy was messed up and had to be helped off the stage. Blak Sabbath, what a band. Into the Void, Hand of Doom, Sweet Leaf are a few more good ones. Thanks for the Reaction.
Great story. He strikes me as someone who liked to party back in the day. Appreciate the recommendations. We have a list started we're going to try to get to as soon as possible. Black Sabbath fans have been very kind to us.
@@CoachCastTV Oh yeah, his addictions almost led to his complete destruction. I'm surprised he made it out the 80s, fortunately he did and is now living well into his 70s. His wife Sharon deserves alot of credit for him making it this far.
The lyrics are different... They played with different formulas before they recorded it on the album... And the fingertips Tony is missing are on the hand he holds on the frets... He had to use banjo strings to be able to play so he turned up the distortion and inadvertently created metal music
You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the Queen and Black Sabbath reviews…I grew up on this music and we need to appreciate what they’ve done! Keep it up!
This 1970 show is famous especially amongst Sabbath fans as I have been one since a was 16 (I’m 60). My best suggestion would be to do Children Of The Grave from The Reunion concert in 1998 and have the lyrics pulled up. It is the absolute best version of that song.
Hello from New Zealand This is so cool for me to watch you guys react to this, because this is what I grew up listening to. Im sure other people have pointed out this whole Paris 1970 gig is on youtube Enjoy 🎉😊
There were several lyric alterations before the final studio product You got to hear Symptom of the Universe and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath also Laguna Sunrise, Planet Caravan or Solitude to experience their diversity 🤔 ❤ Original Sabbath is a separate Entity. the later works with Ian Gilan or Ronnie Dio as vocals were excellent in their own rights, but with a much different effect.
Coach... I recommend you check out Symptom of The Universe... If you like Bill Ward now... you will love him after this tune. It has a harder more aggressive rock style with Bill knocking the hell out of those pig skins. Also the last 2 minutes of the song will blow you away. Thanks for both of your great reactions. Love you guys.
These guys invented Heavy Metal: ua-cam.com/video/2mcufMEvoEw/v-deo.html Don't get me wrong, Black Sabbath spread it to the world! I love both bands although Black Sabbath are the more influential of the two.
@@CoachCastTV I saw them in one of the Griffith Park (Los Angeles 1966) "Love-Ins" and all of the Hippies and wannabe Hippies were there and the bands were playing their folk Rock and San Francisco Flower/Psychedelic Rock. Then these boys set up and kaBOOM! It was brutal and fantastic at the same time.
Hey peeps if you cast your minds back to 1970 the war in vietnam was still ongoing ,which is what i think its about. But in reality its the same for every country waging war on onanother .
No toni had the pick up plate in the back of guitar turned down by a specialist and got that morbid e minor sound his fingers a diffrent story he uses his pinky also no other guitarist does watch his documentary its amazing plus the special made finger tips
Tony Iommi is missing the fingertips on the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. He plays with prosthetic caps on those 2 fingers. Not sure how...he probably can't feel the strings.
Ozzy is having too much of a good time... he forgets the lyrics and just makes up new ones on the stop LOL. And Black Sabbath invented heavy metal. Tony Iommi invented basically almost all metal riffs in existance.
look very closely Bill Ward is playing the drums with the sticks upside down. he is beating it to death with the fat end of the sticks.
Sabbath is the primordial metal goo that all the metal species crawled out of.
😂😂 truly
The birth of Heavy Metal...

This performance was from before the song was finalized.
The lyrics may be different in the live version. This is the beginning of heavy metal music. This is probably why they were having a good time.
Ozzy didnt mess up the lyrics, this song was just about to be released on the Paranoid album and they made some changes on the final "cut"
Bill's drumming is just amazing here.
Yes, indeed. Never seen anything like it.
@@CoachCastTV Tony uses metal caps on his missing finger tips. While playing
We read about that and watched a video on it. Amazing.

Very first heavy metal band
Black Sabbath created the genre, his fingers have caps over the injuries
they played with the lyrics so much with this song they could throw an album out with all the versions, and id love it!

Worth considering how few (if any) bands sounded like this at the time. To me, a groundbreaking band❤
Agreed!
They are the fathers of Metal...detuned the strings = deeper ominus tone.
It’s heavy metal. Since it’s 50 years old it has become classic.
The visual/sound quality of this clip is amazing. To watch your face as Bill Ward beat those drums to death was pure joy.
Bill Ward is an absolute beast on the drums. LOL
Black Sabbath live is just soooooo good. Please react to killing yourself to live or Supernaut

Love that distortion sound!

Listen to the song After Forever from the 3rd Sabbath record
Different lyrics in West on the American version of this song they did what you called D tuning
You are correct about the lyrics here, after the first 4 lines the lyrics are entirely different to the studio version. Well spotted.

Ozzy did forget any lyrics, they made them clean it up a little for the radio. This was the first heavy metal song ever.

Blues roots
I watched 10 videos had to subscibe dont know how old you are but i assume around my age im 58 seen sabbath live in 1978
We're just a few years younger. Glad to have you!
At this point in time they hadn't nail down the lyrics they wanted to be recorded.
Great reaction, you might consider some Rush !
Thanks! Haven't listened to much from them so it would be new ground for us.
@CoachCastTV Their big hit was Tom Sawyer, but Spirit of Radio is great. For live , you will enjoy "Working Man" live in Cleveland

different lyrics. glad you did the lyric video first.

"I hope those drums were 18..."

try After Forever,...it might throw a few surprises
A few have recommended that one so it is going on the list. Thank you!

f you want another 'unexpected' song from a rock band, then I would strongly suggest 1916 by Motorhead. If that doesn't get you, nothing will!
Have heard of the band but none of their music, so this is a good one for new territory for us. Thank you.
Yep the song 1916 (1st World War ) is like no other Motorhead song if you don't have a tear in your eye by the end of it I'd be suprised.
More Ariana Grande Live Performances
Absolutely! We are recording more this weekend.
u all do know who Ozzy Osbourne is?
Yes, of course. We never listed to Black Sabbath at all, and only a few Ozzy songs.
different lyrics, for sure.
Both versions are excellent!
