3 reasons, 1. A lot of people felt that the first movie didn't need a sequel, 2. They announced that it was a musical, and 3. The word of mouth from critics and the general audience was bad
To put it shortly: Joker 1 was hit because it was a genuinely fantastic movie and Joker 2 flopped because it’s terrible and unnecessary. Simple as that
@@stevewhite6241 I mean lots fans do the same with The Last of Us Part II. They choose to believe that the entire second game is some fever dream and Ellie is still unconscious towards the end of the first game. The gameplay is fantastic, but the story is garbage. Since the second Joker movie does exist and it does suck horribly, people can view it was non-canon and all in Arthur's head if they want to.
Nobody wanted Joker 2 to be a musical, but a crazy idea it could have been interesting. Plenty of musicals, like you to see from Disney, are intended to motivate scenes or express what the characters are feeling. If this was all in the Joker's head and had original songs that gave insight into his mind, I can see this working okay. But instead, it's a jukebox musical with popular songs that tie into absolutely nothing, therefore it's pointless and goes from potentially interesting to boring because the story doesn't motivate anything either. And when you're basically Joker and Harley: The Musical with Lady Gaga, the last thing you should be is boring.
All the suffering arthur took in the first movie is what built the joker in arthur. Him denying hes joker at the end just because the police violated his hole is just awful.
If I had a nickle for everytime in 2024 a terrible release involving Joker came out I would have 2 nickles...which isn't lot but strange it happened twice right?
It proves financial success is not always a good thing. Joker was a perfect standalone story. Maybe Todd didn't want to make it and just decided to burn Arthur's world to the ground completely. At least I hope that was the intention.
But there’s plenty of people in Hollywood who care way more about making movies for money and nothing more. Those people absolutely outnumber the ones who make movies because of their passion for cinema :/
I don't know why but I like this movie. Everyone who hits his peak has to come back. Aurther hits his peak as joker with madness and he comes back. And everyone who hits and fall back will suffer. And he suffered.
I really liked Joker 2 but I totally agree with this take. I was expecting the same Joker from 1 as well. The twist wasn’t bad at all to me. Definitely surprised.
Let's all sing together : "Whyyyy, ooooooh, whyyyyyyyy did youuuuuuuuuuu doooooooo aaaa muuuusiiiicaaaaaal!!!!!!!?!?!?!" IGN & Warner : "Wuuuu dooon't understand... why... you didn't go see it!?" How disconnected do you have to be to still be asking yourselves why the public didn't care!? In French, we say : "Aveuglement volontaire (voluntary blinding). Do you get it or do we need to send you a drawing!?
Oh man! I read it was a musical and ditched the idea of seeing it, thought I might be wrong, then I read what happens at the end, Batman’s not in it - Harley looks cool from what little I’ve seen - but that ending just, for me, was the final nail in the coffin of wanting to see it - such a waste. Now any movie about this character has been tainted for the future - it was like Batman and Robin in the 90s - bloody awful film which ruined Batman until The Dark Knight was made. What a shame
I wish they'd re-edit Joker 2 by getting rid of all the musical scenes, reshooting some scenes and changing the ending. It might cost another $100 million but it might make a lot more if you give the audience what they want
Lol, you're wrong, Joker 1 was successful because it was a good Joker movie, Heath's Joker was never my favorite, I never cared for the Joker that much until I saw Joaquin's performance.
When I first heard of a joker sequel, my initial reaction was......"why?" but was giving it a chance, but it didn't take long for me to give up the hope for it
It was just because. When they created Joker 1, many youtubers and viewers expected a bomb. The creators actually didn't expect much out of such a diverse film. They were hoping at least less then 300mil. And they said they had the same mindset, making Joker 2. They didn't expect a lot over such a diverse film, as long as they made some money back. I kind of respect Tod's Phillips going this route
The media and a bunch of critics hated it but if you look the score of the fans, they love the first movie, it has 90 on metacritic, 8.4 on IMDb, 89% on RT, It has universal acclaimed with the public, the first movie is very special, is one of those few movies that stays with you for a very long time after you watch it.
The critics didn't hate it they only hated it when it was just released and the only complain was that it was "Too Violent" but after they saw that the fans loved it the critics started to change their minds too.
Because the first joker was really well made and definitely captured Arthur’s fall into madness and becoming the joker. Meanwhile joker 2 is a poorly made unnecessary sequel that is little more than a huge cash grab
You forgot the fifth reason why this movie failed. And that’s because it serves as nothing more than a lecture about why you shouldn’t have liked the first movie.
Definitely Mark Hamill. His portrayal of the Joker feels the most comic book accurate. Nobody else captures the essence and personality of Joker better than Mark Hamill
In my opinion. The original Joker was fantastic because it knew what it wanted to be, and it was what it wanted to be in an amazing way. Joker 2 did not know what it wanted to be. It considered multiple paths, but didn't choose any of them. Top it off with one of the worst endings in cinema history.
I liked Joker 2. Its good. 1st part is better of course, but 2nd is not bad either, its not to everybody's liking, but its different and I like that about it.
Musicals can be amazing (I personally love heathers and the Alex Brightman Beetlejuice musical) but there are movies and shows where that just doesn’t fit, and unfortunately that’s the case for most movies/shows :\
First of Joker is not a superhero movie coz man ain’t a superhero he’s a supervillain, Call em comic book movies! & finally someone said that Harley is the one who manipulated Arthur, not the opposite like in the comics.
Shame they had to go so far in the wrong direction. Doubt the sequel could have topped the first but a movie that focused on the Joker persona would have done well. Could have even led up to Joker being (directly or indirectly) behind the death of Bruce's parents thus spawning the beginning of the Batman character. Hell it even could have subverted expectations by having Bruce killed and showing a Gotham without Batman or someone else becoming. Betting many on here and elsewhere could have come up with even better ideas without much time or effort.
The first Joker movie was taken from two other movies with the character having mental issues. It got hyped up so most watched it already thinking it was good. Watching the first one without the hype the movie is drawn out boring and over the top. It is about a guy who is a victim even though he kills two people , stalks a girl an then end up killing a tv show host, all because he wanted to be loved by everyone. just for the end to suggest it never happen an it was all in his head. The second movie wasn't hyped and not needed , those who watched it watched it without the hype and they formed their own opinion and this is the outcome.
I really liked the second movie, but my problem is that it's supposed to be a joker movie. If it was just arthur, a mentally ill man, i think it would be much beter.
Movie critics are the true evils they never tell their real opinions they either glaze the movie saying that it's the best thing ever or they hate on it saying that it's horrible. And some people hate on the movie cause of that
The whole reason it was bad was because the creator clearly said that he did NOT wanted a sequel but the people pressed him so much that he decided to make this as a "Fuck You" to us!!!!
The whole Joker 2 was basically harley and the joker dancing and reminding us what happened in the last movie.
exactly
not every movie needs a sequel
Fax and this goes out to Megamind
And the movies that do need sequels don’t need more sequels.
Sometimes we need to stop asking for sequels and be happy with what we got

Joker Folly and Doo-Doo was nowhere near entertaining at all
