Blood 2: The Chosen is a 1998 first person shooter developed by Monolith Productions and published by GT Interactive. It follows the continuing adventures of Caleb, an undead gunslinger, now imbued with the power of Tchernobog following the end of Blood 1. This game, rather than being on the Build engine, is on the vastly buggier LithTech engine, taking Caleb and his friends into the third dimension for the first time. The game has garnered a strongly negative reputation for its broken combat, nonsensical story, and generally just being a huge disappointment.

Supposedly this is also why Bubsy 3d is as bad as it is. Michael Berlyn (the creator of Bubsy) after seeing demo of Super Mario 64 wanted to go back to the drawing board and redesign the game, but the higher ups at Accolade overruled him in favor of quick release.
Same thing with Superman 64 which (aside of messing with release date) had all sort of other executive meddling to the point of a freaking PROTOTYPE having more content than the released game.
Meanwhile, Daikatana has no excuses since Romero was fully in control for this one and he made a doodoo.

Also, I actually really like Caleb's very weak-willed voice lines for when he takes damage in Blood 2. My headcanon is that being an immortal undead person actually feels physically awful and Caleb is probably in constant pain all over. He might have been able to tough it out in the first game, but you can imagine he would be absolutely sick and tired of it 80 some odd years later.

Careful with that disc from CV-11, you never know what kind of less than pleasant substances it may have been exposed to.
Also, I have to be honest, I think Caleb's skeleton look is the one he should have had for most of the game, but that's just my opinion.

Do you know what the scariest thing about Blood 2 was? Playing it on a computer that met the game's minimum system requirements. Some of the longest loading times I've ever sat through. Eventually used the invincibility cheat so I wouldn't have to endure them as much.
I remember the pre-patched version had a message during the epilogue mocking game reviewer Geoff Keighley, but the first patch removed it.
Shogo was somewhat more stable than Blood 2, btw. Monolith probably stretched themselves too thin developing both these games at the same time.
I can't believe Scarfulhu made a fake Blood sequel to review for an early April Fools 2023 video.
Because there can't really be a sequel to Blood, he said it doesn't exist and I don't want to be hurt.

The worst part? Doom, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior...all of these got modern installments(for better or for worse) but I don't think anyone will ever touch Blood again.

I think the original story intent for Gabriella was that the Cabal were trying to put Gabriel's deceased soul into a living body, and that just happened to be a woman because that's what they had lying around (which would explain why 90% of her body is cybernetics). But it's kinda funny how in the final game it just comes across as Gabriella coming out as trans after she literally died.
...Wait that's not funny, that's actually really sad.

I can proudly proclaim that I've beaten Blood 2 without cheats. However, the pain of getting through this game still haunts me.

That’s fine i had to suffer playing paper Mario sticker Star. The pain is real with its horrible boss design and worst final boss in history of any game.
is it me, or is the general consensus on bad media seeming to steer more towards "it was a rush job and the only people to really blame for it are the executives, the already well-off, those that don't truly care about the arts"?
obviously, there's nuance to it, and not every piece of bad media is a rush job, but i feel like more and more people making these types of videos are recognizing the results of execs, who seem to always make things worse the more control they have and have as much money as little as they have awareness of the souls of everybody around them, for what they really are.
if that is how it seems for me, and this idea is indeed spreading and replacing the considerably less nuanced method of pointing at shit and picking it apart, throwing every insult you can think of at it without a second thought, then that honestly gives me hope. hope that well-intentioned ideas can spread and thrive, that more people can really become more aware of the cruelty that actually lies beneath our society. maybe it's not as quick as we'd like, but what if being human truly does win out in the end?

I just remember this being a mess either way.
I've had an odd spot in my heart for Blood 2 as it was the very, very first boxed game I ever bought myself for my birthday. It's very extremely jank and I played it at the extreme lowest possible settings cause all I had at the time was a potato.
I too, cheated the shit through the game because I got tired of clipping through the levels and having noclip not get me back on solid ground. Also the many variations of ENEMY YOU NEED TO MASH THE USE KEY ON just pissed me off too lol.
Also ended up buying a copy of Shogo MAD later on, which shared some development hell the same way this game did (although maybe not as bad)

Yooo Scarfulhu, Civie11 and Gianni Matraganno!? Didn't expect 3 of some of my most favorite internet peopme to crossover! Then again I probably should have expecred it to happen.
RNG in video game damage isn't exactly a new thing; Doom actually had it to a degree which Decino highlighted in his "Doom's RNG" video;
But the difference is that in Doom it made sense as a way to game-ify and portray the idea of locational damage (maybe a shot hits the leg or arm rather than head) that couldn't actually be done ingame with its 2.5 gameplay and auto-aim (and lack of a body damage model) in a 3D game it makes very little sense to have RNG-based damage especially when the range of possible damage dealt is so stupidly high.
In Doom, the RNG damage ranged from "Maybe 4 pistol shots will kill, maybe it'll be 5" but in Blood 2 it's "Maybe 2 shotgun shells will kill, maybe it'll be 20"
Even then if it was just about killing it would be one thing, but the damage determines when enemies get stunlocked and having that be extremely unreliable means your own survivability is fucked; *especially* when RNG damage applies to enemies as well so you've no idea if peeking around a corner means you'll get lightly tapped or turned into chopmeat.

This game is fucking raw. The only good thing about it is Stephen Weyte as Caleb. Outside of that, it's so unfinished that it's not pink on the inside, the animal is still being slaughtered.
Shogo is worth playing around with. True it has similarities with Blood 2 in that the the story is undercooked (although more prevalent) and the annoying random damage is there as well (save scuming is key) but the game has charm and it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's a loveletter to anime and mech. Although the game can be annoying at times it can also be a fun little goofy experience.
Oh. Can’t wait to watch this. I remember playing this game so well, it was a letdown as style was very difffrom first game but somehow we loved it for what it was

Never played this one, but I'm impressed by how similar it looks and feels like Shogo. Except Shogo actually had a few redeeming features. I guess not having to live up to the expectations of being a sequel to a beloved classic helps.
I believe "KISS Psycho Circus" (launched just a couple of years later) also ran on their LithTech Engine. That game was abysmal tho 🤣

Never played Blood or Blood2, but when I saw the blood effects I instantly recognized it as the engine behind Shogo.
I had sooo much fun with Shogo as a kid. I only remember it bugging out on me at some point, but it was quite fun until then

People have often credited GT Games for the failure of this project, but I'm not entirely sure that Monolith is absolved either.
There's a handful of ideas that I don't think were executed well on a fundamental level. The random damage spread, for example. That's base code. I also don't know if I agree with the excess of weapons when balancing was still lacking. And of course the attribution of how props explode or not.
Some content is obviously rushed, but other bits just feel like outright bad decisions from the dev team. Which maybe could have also been fixed with more time, but I'm not so sure if they would have been changed...
Monolith was also split in two to work on Shogo

21:32 In normal play, I don't think anyone should ever have to justify using cheats. You're playing for your entertainment, so you can enjoy it how you like. I think for competitive play, any cheats that one player can use, the other player needs to also be able to use, so it's fair. For a review of a normal game, ideally to me, one should not use cheats, because it warps the experience the reviewer will have with the game. But in a case like this, where the game was shipped before the developers recommended, and the balance is out of whack, cheating during a review is justifiable, and even a valid detail for the review-- cheating was necessary in order to actually finish the game, which is not a good sign.

Some people are weirdly nostalgic for SHOGO. It's a *little* more finished than Blood 2, but not by much. It also has the same completely random weapon damage, but made worse! You can get random critical hits on the enemy that heal you. And there's not nearly enough regular healing in the levels, so you're just rolling the dice to find out if you can survive the hitscan barrage.
This was a dark time for Monolith.
The plot of this game in a nutshell: if Evil Dead was written by someone who makes disrespectful satires

aparently, there's a bug in this game where if you drop a gun and take it back, it gives you more ammo, which some people do to be able to finish the game on hard
I may be incorrect on this, so don't quote me on it, but I think that bug was in the game at launch and later patched out.
