  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge was released in 1991 by LucasFilm Games, 1 year after The Secret of Monkey Island shook up the world of adventure games for the better. Monkey 2 is regarded as a favourite among many adventure game fans, but how well does it match up to its predecessor?

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought of that lol. XD I think it's worth debating which is worse, though. Not only does Guybrush do some pretty messed up stuff, but his goal is just to find a mythical treasure so he has something new to brag about; Halligan starts out trying to solve a murder and ends up working to save the world, I'd say his ends go further towards justifying his means - FURTHER, not nearly all the way, mind you, but still, if you factor in the characters' motives, I feel like it's debatable who's a more horrible person.

Hey, you brought up an interesting point at the end there... the one about LeChuck not acting like he knows Guybrush at all in the first game... and I think it might tie into another theory pretty well...
Also that point about the two games having very different tones.
In case you're not already familiar with parts of this theory, let me sum it up:
Based on LeChuck's response to "Where do babies come from?" ("In your case? The orphanage."), we can infer that Guybrush (the real life child Guybrush, not the pirate world Guybrush) was an orphan at one point. Either because his parents abandoned him (like Guybrush suggests) or because they died (being skeletons and all).... or maybe both.
He then got adopted by his new mother.
The fact that you can only take the "father's" skull only proves it's Chucky's father.
So it's proven those two are related, but not guybrush and his new mother or new father.
When you "look at" the quil inventory item that you can buy in the booty boutique, Guybrush says "Just like the pen from mom & dad's wedding."
How would he remember his parents' wedding?
Because his new parents married when he was already a kid.
So all that MIGHT mean that Chucky's dad married Guybrush's mom, making Chucky his step-brother.
That would explain why they don't get along.
Now, to tie this into your point, what if the two monkey island games are two seperate visits to the same theme park?
...and the first time Guygrush went there... is when his adoptive parents met.
...and by extension when Guybrush and Chucky first met.
So chucky's Dad was there with Chucky, and Guybrush's Mom was there with Guygrush.
The parents met, got along well, fell in love and decided to marry some time later.
That would explain why LeChuck seems like a stranger to Guybrush in the first game. Because he WAS a stranger.
It would also explain the different tones of these games. The first game was full of wonder and excitement, because Guybrush was exploring this piratey world for the first time.
But the second time around he was already a bit older, had already seen many of the attractions, and was becoming cynical about the fassade of the whole place, as he started to see through it.
He was chasing that feeling of excitement he felt when he first visited the park (like how in-game Guybrush chases the fame of his first adventure).
But he couldn't escape his brother constantly following him around, because it was this place that brought him into Guybrush's life in the first place.
During their first meeting Chucky was just that annoying playmate that kept getting in his way because Guybrush's mother kept chatting with that kid's Dad, so they were obligated to play together, but the second time around there was something much more sinister to his presence, now that they were firmly "bound to one another".
    But hey, that's just a theory. A THEORY ABOUT A GAAAAME. :^)

As a fat guy myself, I absolutely disagree on your point about Governor Phatt.
The joke isn't just "Fat people, amirite?"
Because he's not just fat. Rum Rogers is also fat. The cook from the first game is also fat.
Even the Voodoo Lady is pretty thicc. That's not what you're supposed to take away from the character.
He's fat, sure, but he's also so ridiculously hedonistic and opulent that he stopped being able to live like a normal person (completely by design, mind you). He devised his entire lifestyle around doing nothing but eating and sleeping.
He doesn't even go to the bathroom anymore, judging from the big pipe under his bed...
Plus he gets washed with a garden hose.
It's a commentary on corrupt authority figures who make their henchmen do all the work while they can afford to live a life of hedonism to such a ridiculous degree that no average person could get away with.
In other words, this character is way too specific and over the top to just apply it to any and all fat people. This kind of opulence isn't good. It SHOULD be made fun of.
I mean we're not talking about a character with some sort of disability or medical condition here.
He also isn't stress-eating or anything like that.
He's just a selfish jerk who loves eating so much that he literally never stops doing it, not even when talking to people. Why? Just because he can.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's fine to fat-shame people.
I'm no fan of a character's overweight alone being the punchline either, but this isn't fat-shaming.
    It's opulence-shaming.
His morbid obesity is simply a byproduct of his hedonism and lack of self-control.
I know you have only the best intentions with your criticism, and I appreciate that.
I just think we shouldn't take the mantra of not judging people TOO far.
I know what it's like to struggle with weight problems, and I know what it's like to be made fun of for it, heck, I'm even struggling with self-control when it comes to my eating habits.
But that doesn't mean we should show literally ANY kind of behavior that leads to overweight in a positive or neutral light, just because we're associating overweight with something negative in this instance.
Yes, I won't judge people simply for being overweight, because I don't know their story.
But in the case of Governor Phatt, we DO know his story, clear as day. He simply doesn't give a shit that his gluttony has turned him into a mountain of flab that requires the work of several other people to survive. It's obviously an exaggeration, but people with this kind of mindset exist.
They think as long as they can get away with it, there's no reason not to let themselves go. And that's something you can judge them for, because it's a choice.
I don't want people to judge me for things that are outside of my control, but I DO want them to be able to judge me for my choices.
If all the other fat characters in this series were the same way, then it would be a different story.
But like I mentioned, there are plenty of other fat characters in the series that have vastly different characterizations.
Anyway, sorry for the wall of text, but this mindset has been bothering me for a while now.
It's well-meaning, but it's missing the forest for the trees.
Overall I think a character's weight can add a lot to their personality in a positive way, but it saddens me to think that there are people out there who will immediately jump to the conclusion that having a massively fat character in your work of fiction is meant to degrade them BECAUSE of their fat... unless you go out of your way to also shoehorn in a lesson about not judging them.
I don't want every one of my characters to be a walking PSA.
Sometimes I want a fat character to just... exist. Not everything is made to be judged.
People can make up their own mind about them.
I'm very passionate about character design, so I'm always looking for ways to make each of them stand out and be memorable. And body shape is very useful in that regard. It can give them a great "presence" in the world.
But that presence isn't meant to be interpreted as ridicule.
I don't want people to foster an environment where you can't combine negative character traits with a character that just happens to be fat.
Like, what if I wanna make a character who's a deceitful fraudster... but he also happens to be fat?
Then I might get people accusing me of trying to make some sort of statement about fat people, even though that was never the intention.
Fat people shouldn't be off-limits to negative traits.
That's why I want people to be careful when jumping to conclusions with these kinds of things. Unless the game is genuinely meanspirited towards its fat characters, BECAUSE they are fat, then you should make sure you're not just making judgements based on associations.
There are some things that come naturally with being fat (and I can speak from experience here). You might not fit into a chair. The floor might creak and bend under your feet. You might struggle fitting through thin passages. You might struggle finding clothes that fit. And so on. (Obviously there are health problems too, but I'm just talking about things you tend to notice at a glance, i.e. things that add some of the aforementioned "presence" to a character).
That's just a reality of the situation. It's something you CAN make fun of us for, (and people do, obvilously) but just because some people do that, doesn't mean I should stop acknowledging this part of reality. And just because others are judging us for it, doesn't mean I'm doing the same when I acknowledge it.
So when I'm animating a character who is so fat that they shake the ground with every step, that doesn't mean I'm trying to make them out to be a monster. It just means I'm not sugarcoating the reality of such a character. Traits like these can add a ton of personality. Like when a character is so tall that they don't fit into a car. That's not a judgement, that's just the reality of being super tall.
I mean I have trouble fitting into my grandpa's car, because my legs are so long. Or you could have a character that is so short that they need to carry a step stool wherever they go. That's not a judgement either. It might just be a part of their life.
So I really wish we could include this stuff without people assuming you're just pointing and laughing.
And it's not just body types that this applies to. I mean you talked about Captain Dreadd like he's some sort of harmful stereotype. A stereotype? Sure. Harmful? No way! Captain Dread is such a pleasant character! A harmful stereotype makes you think less of a person. Dread is a cliché jamaican, but there's no judgement in that cliché.
It's ok to have clichés and stereotypes every once in a while if they're not meanspirited.
Like... I'm german, and I think a ton of german stereotypes are hilarious. And sometimes they are true. Like the stereotype that germans eat Bratwurst. It's true, I DO eat bratwurst! And there's nothing wrong with that.
There's no judgement in that stereotype.
I know it all comes from a place of caring, but we should never forget why we wanted to care in the first place.
Anyway, I've rambled for long enough. If you ended up reading my whole spiel, thanks for your time!
    I genuinely loved this video!
Your passion for this game is infectious!

I've read through all your comments, and you've left some very thoughtful and well-reasoned stuff. Some comments don't afford the courtesy and instead resort to calling me 'woke' or 'preachy'. (Maybe I am a little, who knows?) The criticisms I had about the way the game handles a couple of characters was difficult stuff to write - it's more I found it iffy on a revisit, but I totally get that not everyone would feel that way. I'm just happy to raise the discussion and have people engage with it, really. Even if I'm way off base and being overly cautious in my criticism. I mostly stand by my thoughts on Phatt and the bra joke, but people have brought up other interesting perspectives on it too.
Also, as for Dread, I don't think he's harmful actually, I just don't think his name or the name of his boat are very imaginative. It's like the first two names you could come up with if you wanted the character to seem Jamaican. Like I said, they acknowledge that a bit in the Special Edition developer commentary.
Thanks for taking the time to not only watch the video, but also write a whole bunch for me to consider too. I genuinely appreciate people engaging like this - and I'm glad you enjoyed it overall.

in my opinion the idea of "character who is an authority figure abusing their power an hoarding ressources = fat" is EXTREMELY cliché, it's been repeated ad nauseam in culture, to the point it's become offensive.
i completely agree that fat characters should be able to have negative traits, like any other characters ! but this negative trait in particular being associated with fatness just... sucks. because in reality, obesity is linked to poverty in western countries (bc of food insecurity, less healthy choices available, and sedentarism, if i understand right). Just look at political leaders, CEOs and celebrities, they have power but they're not fat. they've got good food, security, they move, go on vacation. "power=fat" is just an extremely outdated idea imo
also, i disagree that liking eating is a negative trait. some people like to eat and be fat and that's not necessarily a mark of hedonism or power or selfishness.
and i mean yeah if someone is fat to the point that they cant walk, that sucks, but i think they dont deserve to be mocked either. people who are like that have something going on in terms of mental health or whatever else, and should be helped instead of mocked.

He is less a 'person' and more a caricature of a system that feeds off of others and focuses wealth and privilege to the top.
Certainly better to consider what's being said than go with: "nah...I was right the first time".
I'm with you on the bra joke though. Yep, that's how it was at the time, "it's funny because he wears ladies clothes". Didn't age well and really does nothing to 'undermine' Largo. Sure he might be wearing a bra, but he can still kick your teeth in.

I like that you recognized how Tales actually followed up on some plot points that were set up in this game but ignored in CMI and EMI. I’d even say that the final chapter of Tales is the closest we’ve gotten to recapturing the unsettling feelings present in MI2-though many see it as the “Fan Fiction game” it actually had more people from the first two games working on it or consulting than either of the two games after this one. Gilbert’s games were highly comedic and silly, but they also had that undercurrent of unsettling, creepy things-starting fully with under the Monkey Head in the first game. I really think Tales embraced that more complex, strange world and characters presented in Gilbert’s vision more than CMI or especially EMI did. It’s interesting to look back through the series that way. Also side note: in that 30th anniversary stream, Ron Gilbert said in his MI3 he always planned for Guybrush to go to Hell. For me at least, that confirms that the series does not exist as a childhood fantasy.

I very much enjoyed the risks it took and how it balanced silly with a deeper context, taking the drama of LeChuck/Guybrush/Elaine that you mentioned in this video was leaned into for CMI and EMI while also dabbling a bit more in the vein of Gilbert’s experimentalism that he really leaned into with MI2. I consider it a really great evolution for the series, especially considering how (at least for me) EMI leaned so far into the silliness that it felt inconsistent with and inconsequential to the rest of the series.

I was never sure whether to interpret the bra item as a joke on Largo for wearing women's clothes... or a joke at Mad Marty marty for being oblivious to the fact that he obviously handed you the wrong clothes.
I assumed it actually belonged to someone else and only worked because of some technicality. Like, the voodoo spell only needs someone to consider an item to belong to the victim, so since Marty thought it was Largo's, it was good enough. And the voodoo lady DID say that some of the ingredients weren't optimal...
It's a bit of a stretch, I know, but with how kooky mad marty is, I wouldn't be surprised if he regularly messes up orders.
Either way, even if the other explanation was the intended one, I don't think it's meant to be mean-spirited. Regarding the background art, I think with monkey 2 they were drawn by Peter Chan in marker then digitized and had the resolution and palette reduced. In monkey 1 I think they were made from scratch on the computer from concept art. I think the differences in process mean monkey 1's bg art is more 'form follows function' as it's simpler and doesn't distract from the players actions, while the bg art is monkey 2 is more detailed with great tonal variation but it's more complex to navigate and find the interactable objects.

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel 2 роки тому +3

That’s pretty close to what happened definitely, I think a little bit of the artwork was drawn digitally with MK2 but the majority of it (basically all the background art) was digitised from hand drawn artwork. I also think it might’ve been more than just Peter Chan working on the artwork though judging by what it says on some of the art that were rediscovered recently. One of the problems with MK2’s background artwork though is that a lot of it wasn’t properly “cleaned up” after being digitised and palette reduced, it makes it look a bit dirty in places and there’s some misplaced colours where the digitiser didn’t create a good gradient.
It’s really interesting seeing the two modes of background drawing because they have very different results.

about the telescope & gorilla statue puzzle: you'll notice *the entire wall of bricks* is interactable. the light burns a mark on the exact brick Guybrush is supposed to push. the exact brick is also randomized each game to make sure you do the entire puzzle every time; so if you load the game, the telescope might burn a different brick.

01:14:10 the light beam is supposed to mark the "right" brick on the wall that will make the slide turn towards the cellar. if you press any of the other bricks, the trap-door will open but the slide will remain pointing the other way.

IMUSE was one if my favourite P&C elements. I love it so much, it's that kind of le motif musicality in videogames that I love.
Dynamic soundtracks, when they're still in effect, really owe it to Monkey Island for setting the tone of how to do it RIGHT.
Also Rasta Dred... and Captain Marley... my namesake is smiling like crazy right now!
41:53 As an Australian who calls all wrenches variants of (adjustable) SPANNER, I can only thank the Foo Fighters for knowing the phrase as a kid.

  • @Null_Experis
    @Null_Experis 3 роки тому +4

re-creating the imuse system in modern games is actually MUCH easier today than it was in the 1990s.
In fact, almost every Konami game on the PS2 used a similar system. It was done by using sound samples instead of song files. This allows you to stream individual instruments into the program and have the computer essentially play back a dynamic song based on them, using software to change the pitch/reverb/etc of the sound samples. It also results in MUCH less space being taken up by music and sound effect files.
A great example of this is the Zone of the Enders series.
Still, it's just easier to slap MP3s into the song folder and make them play when you enter a room.

So, if you skip that conversation, obtain the coordinates, hire Kate and go to that location- you won't find anything. in fact, the coordinates will remain the same but where that location on the map varies depending on when you this conversation.

I have a theory on the Stan theme, in the original floppy versions of MI1 Stan didn’t have his famous music, his first theme was introduced by the CD re-release which came out IIRC when MI2 was in development. This theme was then converted to work on MT-32 for the Ultimate Talkie edition. It makes sense that they’d create a new theme for Stan using MIDI (especially if it was composed before the MI1 re-release), then never go back to the original which was added in a later re-release. Plus, the MI2 theme is more unique.

I'm insanely late to your Monkey Island Videos but since you mentioned how scary LeChuck looks in this, let me tell you about how that felt to us back in the Day when the Game came out and we were Kids (I was born in the mid 1980s).
First of all, it took around 2-3 Years for us to even get to the End of that Game (pre Internet and all that and of course being Kids).
Now when we reached the End Stage where you are chased by LeChuck through the Underground System (especially without Voice Acting) it basically scared me and my 4th Grade Friend so much, we often just ended up shutting the Game off when he showed up, just to reload. I still got those Shivers watching this Video and seeing him.
This was probably my first "Horror Game" Experience and keep in Mind, back then there was just Graphics like this and no Voice Acting.
I'm sure if you played this the first Time as someone born in the late 1990s or so, it wasn't remotely as scary, but damn was it scary for us!

About the light beam puzzle, since it's similiar to how Indiana Jones found the location to the Lost Ark in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the point is that any brick of the wall can be pushed but only one of them makes the slide turn around so it won't kick you out. The light beam shows which is the correct one, though it's not apprently obvious, probably due to storage limitations.
