Probably the g@yest description of a character, a good old fella like Caleb wouldn't approve it.
That opening deserves it's own gif.
Some quality-of-life tips for the Cabal neophytes who might get the game:
1. Crouching is essential to your survival, especially on harder difficulties, as the deadly hitscanners have a hard time hitting you when you're laying low, even when you're not behind any cover at all. Crouching barely slows you down and can be done mid-air.
2. I recommend one "hard-save" at the beginning of each level, then quick-saving your way through it. Dying means you will lose all your guns and inventory items, forcing you into a "pitchfork start". Doable, but a complete nightmare. Load your save instead, and spare yourself the frustration.
3. Try every weapon's alternate fire as soon as you get them! For each and every weapon, alt-fire either offers increased damage, or a completely different, highly effective way to use it. Effects include but are not limited to: area stuns, massive single-target damage, bouncing dymamite off walls, and even a "gun turret" you can place on the ground and pick up later. The more tactically-inclined will find that the possibilities of the weapon sandbox increase exponentially.
4. The least hidden secrets usually replenish spent resources and are almost everywhere, so it's always worth checking nooks and crannies, or something that looks as if you might be able to interact with. Some secrets are always hidden in the same manner, so pattern-recognition is important. The well-hidden secrets are so good they might trivialize encounters or even entire levels! Finding them might require you to be clairvoyant though.
5. Weapons can deal physical, fire and magic damage types. Enemies have varying degrees of weakness to each type, but you can pretty much kill everything with every weapon. Some weapons have weird quirks to them, like setting enemies on fire if you keep dps high enough, the spray canister working better when you're strafing less, the turret shooting faster the longer it's on the ground, and hitscan weapons interrupting enemies.
6. Blood is brutally difficult on a blind playthrough, so take your time to get used to the gameplay. Maybe go through the first couple of episodes on a lower difficulty before attempting playing on Well-Done. That being said, playing on harder difficulties is the only way to really grasp the playstyle and breakneck pacing the game's designed around. You might want to change the medikit default binding to something damn close to your movement cluster.
7. STAY AWAY FROM POST-MORTEM unless you're masochistic, or in need of motivation to smash your rig with a sledgehammer lmao
If you enjoyed some aspects of Blood but feel the level and encounter design spoil the experience, you've got to try Blood: Death Wish before you give up on the game. Available on ModB, Death Wish is a fan-made expansion that's so good Nightdive literally said they were making Fresh Supply with Death Wish compatibility in mind. It deserves every bit of praise it gets. Death Wish is as long as the base game, unbelievably made with in-game assets only by one guy who's been working on it for over a decade now. Everything works exactly the same as the base game, however:
Hitscanners are used in less cheap ways;
Encounter design is such that other types of enemies are actually threatening, instead of fodder or absolute jokes;
Difficulty levels scale much better. Extra Crispy is still as brutal as the base game, but the expansion offers a much more curated encounter design on lower difficulties;
It develops the style from the original levels really well, while remaining thematically cohesive.
All in all, it feels more modern game-design wise, cementing itself as an essential experience for anyone who plays Blood. I even know people that play Death Wish only instead of the original levels. I'm sure the Scarf-man will be very impressed, too.

Then I realized Monolith and Monolith Soft are different studios. >_>
You want to hear something to really bake your noodle? This Monolith *did* make a JRPG. Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator, 1999, kind of like Final Fantasy VII mashed together with Fallout. Has music by Marty O'Donnell, as well as voice acting from Master Chief himself. It's a weird game.
The hand in the original Blood was a real pain to kill. There was a glitch where it kept strangling you to death and you could do nothing about it...
And the funniest thing of all is that it’s remedied by literally just setting your screen resolution higher
For those who are curious, yes, Blood got the Brutal Doom treatment, it’s a mod called Extra Crispy
You are missing out on the blood multiplayer. The voice of Tchernobog constantly comments on the deaths. My favorites are "Scrotal separation!", "Anal Justice!", "Disemboweled!", "Rectal Redemption", and the pedestrian "Reamed".
I love the non stop movie references from Evil Dead and he even sings somewhere over the rainbow at one point.

Life leech is best used on alt-fire, where it becomes a turret that automatically fires at enemies with infinite ammo. This is best used against the bosses
I remember getting a shareware copy of blood around 1997ish and installing it at midnight on a pc in the front room on normal difficulty. An hour later I was mesmerized by the game. It always bothered me that I never finished the game due to difficulty as a kid.
A few years ago I grabbed a copy of the game but the mood wasn't perfect. So I decided to wait to make my first time beating Blood special. A few months later the perfect mood hit me, I stocked up on all my favorite snacks and soda. Took some time off work. Turned out all my lights. Turned on some light cricket noises in background and waited till midnight to recreate that first time I played the shareware.
I played the whole thing thru on "well done" almost nonstop the whole weekend using a sourceport.
It was absolutely magical. I kept cycling between a sense of contentment and frustration until the very end when I finished the game.
At the end when it was all over I felt a little depressed, until I learned about Deathwish...
I've been waiting on the perfect mood. 😅

Yeah,, Atari owns it now and outside of finally letting Night Dive make Fresh Supply due to the high demand for it it looks like Atari really doesn't give a damn about the IP (hell apparently Night Dive did want to keep working on patches for Fresh Supply to fix what few bugs remain but Atari didn't want to keep putting money into the IP). It's a shame too as one thing I would have loved to see is Blood finally getting a console port so it can reach a wider audience, since the Kex Engine Fresh Supply runs on is great for porting remasters of old games to consoles like the Switch (like Doom 64, Turok 1 and 2, Strife, and Shadow Man).
Sorry, just stopping by in the first minute of the video to say the word "Death Wish".
Play it on Extra Crispy if you haven't already. You'll only slightly regret it.

As great as Blood is, I don't think the devs fully grasped what they had on their hands. Death Wish takes every asset the game provides and not only repurposes it into some of the most gorgeous setpieces ever created on the Build Engine, but refines the level design and enemy encounters to a mirror sheen. You could play this pack on Extra Crispy and it would kick your ass, but it would never feel unreasonable about it like the first game could. Everything is telegraphed beautifully. People aren't joking when they say that Death Wish is the real Blood 2.
Just realized how much the crudely animated/mo-capped FMV cutscenes of this game remind me of the uncanny rotoscoped cutscenes in the FAITH trilogy

Yeah, the emblem on the grave is the same one Eric Draven leaves in the flames. Also, that grave is noticeably empty, indicating that Eric has risen from it to seek vengeance. Definitely more Crow than Poe.

This one leaned into the memes a bit heavily. Not that I'm complaining of course. You've really got a way of making this stuff entertaining. I really got a laugh out of "Angry little stabby goth".

My first time playing this game and I jumped straight into extra crispy, then when blood fresh supply came out I brought my friends into extra crispy first time too...
I grew up with this and the other buold engine games. I remember getting Duke 3D for Christmas one year, and blood for the next, if im not mistaken. I had books on map building and i meased with rhe map editor. Mannnnn so mucg nostalgia, and the in game graphics really hold up.

The damage threshold system for zombies is pretty fascinating. Too little damage, they'll stay up and you can chip them away till they're dead. Just enough damage, they get knocked down. Too much damage, it'll exceed their total HP and they die right away. Fun to think of how they went about coding that.
My guess is each zombie keeps a tally of total damage taken and that value continuously ticks down, separate from their HP. If the damage you deal can't outpace it beyond a certain value, they stay up for as long as their HP lasts. A single shotgun shell at close range is just enough to enter that knockdown window. That's a really unusual level of detail for such a simple enemy in a game like this.

I only played Blood like... late last year, I think? It's a top 3 game for me. The Cultists are buggers but nothing even comes close to the satisfaction of overcoming them - ducking and weaving behind cover, or launching a stick of dynamite around a corner and seeing their corpse rocket through the doorway? Pure satisfaction. Excellent video mate!

Blood by today is the most underrated game in the Classic Build Engine Trinity! Two nights from now will be the five month anniversary that I made Blood: Fresh Supply a Perfect Game on my Steam library and the third game on Steam that I made a Perfect Game of my currently existing eight Perfect Games on Steam! Great video! Please do a review of both expansion pack episodes too!

Speaking of references in Blood, one of the more important ones to mention is Phantasm -- not only is the first level of the game based on that film, it's also where the look of the cultists comes from.
It was a great discovery for me when I finally watched the film many years later. Which is something of a general trend, actually. When I first played Blood I was unfamiliar with most (if not all) of the works referenced in it, so my exploration of horror genre largely felt like finding out sources of inspiration for my favorite shooter.

11:55 I believe that's actually supposed to be Eric Draven's open grave from the movie The Crow. And Caleb saying, "Nevermore" is in reference to Eric quoting that poem in the movie.
12:03 The reason for Duke's hanging corpse is because 3D Realms was originally going to make the game, but gave it to Monolith, so they could finish Shadow Warrior on time. It's also a reference to the Doom Marine's body being hidden in Duke 3D.
I haven't watched the video yet but just seeing it made me feel better.

I would say if you want a good, accurate source port Raze is a relatively new port that lets you play most of the Build engine games while using a lot of features from GZDoom.

Blood always felt very unpolished and my least favorite of the Big Three Source games, but it is still super fun with a great aesthetic and hope it makes a comeback someday... Preferably like Lo Wang's return and not Duke Nukem's.

The fact that the game only has ONE actually threatening enemy kinda ruins it for me. At least in Duke most enemies can actually do damage, and it doesn't rely on the one OP hitscanner.
Indeed, I always felt its monsters were Blood's weakest element, which given how awesome gothic horror monsters can be is especially dissapointing.
The second chapter's title probably refers to a quote from Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulu:
"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die."
And the gillbeasts might well be inspired by Lovecraft's Innsmouth inhabitants, but I do not know what they are doing so far away from Massachusets
Not even a few months after I first heard of Blood and there's a Scarfulhu vid of it. My life is now complete.
The secondary fire of the LifeLeech is very useful on higher difficulties, especially on Extra Crispy. VS Cheogh(s): Drop it even if you have no ammo for it (the self damage is minimal), use the crouch toggle of fresh supply and go make a sandwich or take a break or something. It'll take time but it WILL kill the Cheogh(s). Great when you are low on health/ammo/patience.
(It won't run out of ammo ever in turret mode, ever)

From caddicarus to here, howdy. I enjoyed your content but I guess I just never watched it a lot. I got a random thought of “oh yeah, that cool dude exists”
Time for me to be the guy who obligatorily plugs NBlood. Fresh Supply is alright and a couple things are really nice about the port, but the one thing I can't stand about it is how the flame from the Spray Can doesn't pierce enemies like it's supposed to. This weapon could drop 60 zombies like nothing, and now it takes the same amount of ammo to kill two or three.
It is nice how the flame particles stay active when they collide with the floor - makes it real good for killin rats and hands - but you lose so much more.
I plug NBlood over GDX because while GDX is the most accurate and stable port, NBlood has an alpha weapons feature that gives your flare gun impact damage and restores the lifesteal effect to the life leech. These are both absolutely huge boons to the weapons - especially if you play on Extra Crispy. Being able to painstun a cultist with a flare is so good. Also you'll find new love with the Life Leech. It's still not an amazing weapon, but since the lifesteal comes really really close to keeping pace with the life drain of the weapon, you have a tool that gives you functionally infinite mediocre fire damage.
You lose the napalm alt but it's not a massive loss since that alt is extremely situational.
The cutscenes may be raw as fuck but you can't deny they a had a nice cinematic atmosphere. I enjoy them and hope that one day someone remakes them
Out of the Holy Trinity of build engine games this is the one I kept missing cuz I could never get to work and although Jericho cross is always going to be my undead gunslinger I can't deny how awesome blood

When I was a kid my dad used to pirate a bunch of stuff off usenet and he burned Blood 2 onto a CD that was red on the part that you write the data on instead of silver. That was the first game I ever played on PC and it wasn't until decades later that I played the first Blood.
Thank you for explaining the inevitable end to all things Uncle Scar :3, now I can let go of this mortal body in peace.

Back in the day, those loud enemies were the most deadly because of their fast and erratic movement. The new wasd control method paired with higher fps and resolutions make those guys really easy to deal with. BTW: The first boss was almost impossible to beat because you couldnt save scam. Everytime you quickloaded a save the stone gargoyle would regenerate full health. Noone knew that and so it was always quite mysterious how he could be killed.
Too bad Atari f'ed up nightdives Port.
Blood deserves better and Nightdive certainly can do b etter. Oh, well.
