Legend of Kyrandia 2: Hand of Fate (Sometimes referred to as Fables and Fiends Book Two) is a 1993 point 'n' click adventure game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive. Players return to the fantasy land of Kyrandia once more, now occupying the role of Zanthia, a snarky alchemist chosen to save the land from a giant sentient hand with sinister plans. Along the way she meets a wild variety of characters, avoids embarrassing deaths, and is forced to change her wardrobe constantly as the world and environment change. Kyrandia 2 is often considered the crown jewel of the series, and has a strong fandom in the point 'n' click community.

Speaking of that section, I wasn't happy to see the Indigenous stereotypes there. I'm glad it can be skipped, and I understand it was 1993, but they could (and thus should) have known better. It would have been nice to hear an acknowledgement of that from Scarf when it came up.

I love the voice acting in this. Clearly amateur, but it's not that bad. Has a campy charm to it.
I dunno if it's just cause of the obvious SCUMM engine text. but all of the voice acting puts me in mind of Secret of Monkey Island, despite Hand of Fate coming out nearly 4 years after SoMI
Oh yeah, absolutely. I love how campy it is. Nobody can tell me otherwise.
Honestly, I feel point n clicks fit into three voice acting styles when VA is included: theatrical (Strangeland), campy (Lucas Arts and Sierra), and the limited or gibberish approach (Machinarium).
I do love theatrical approaches like Disco Elysium, but the campy style is probably my favourite.
The animation in this little game series is damn impressive for the time, like there's a wild amount of effort put into it. Zanthia is also a rather fresh breath of air for a point and click adventure game protag, she's so sassy and in charge of the situation.
Marco is also her handsome but stupid boytoy. She clearly tolerates his bumbling because he knows she's the boss.
I am convinced point n clicks are one of the most fluid and ever evolving game mediums, and this trilogy might be one of the best examples. It's so consistent in breaking and reversing tropes, and it makes each game a treat to play.

Welcome back! Definitely love the set up and layout of the review! Also yeah, all that sprite work that went into her outfits are amazing, plus I am impressed how much they actually made use out of her alchemy instead of it just being a random footnote. Plus badass female protagonist FTW!

A lot of the sound effects in this game are also used in another game that came out in 1993 by Westwood: Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos. There's also an easter egg where there's a letter addressing the villain from that game!

If you got a gold tooth for every time that happened, you'd have four gold teeth by now. Which isn't a lot, but it's strange that it happened twice.
I didn't expect Marko to be the love interest being a smug bungling type character and all. But hey, people like who they like. And he's admittedly more memorable than the dashing prince charming type of character.
I eagerly await for you to cover the third game (really really REALLY hope it won't take six years) and I'm always checking to see if you uploaded the newest Monkey Island retrospect. Love those!

On Kyrandia 1, the game allows you to use the Orchid instead of the Rose on Brandon's mother grave. The Rose and the Orchid work, and now i'm actually wondering about the Tulip
if you remain on the ship when it's docked at mustard island for a bit, it'll automatically set sail back to highmoon, so it's not a dead end

Hand Of Fate is my favourite of the trilogy. It's just the most fun to play. I always loved the setting of Kyrandia. I wouldn't mind more adventures there.
That Towers of Hanoi puzzle though.. my young brain did not get it at all when I played it the first time. I think I actually left the game unfinished for years because of it. Grr argh!
The fact that the main character is a blonde named Xanthia (roughly meaning yellow) is a nice touch.
There's a way to not die on the cannibal island: bring a sandwich with you. Can't remember anything additional happen, but you definitely can save yourself from being eaten at least once.
Well, I finally subscribe.
I hesitate to subscribe to channels, I don't want to subscribe to a channel because of a few good videos and than stop watching it after two weeks.
But this channel has such gems that I had to subscribe at this point.
I've got all three of these games from GOG. After Scarfulhu's talked up the first two games, he's got me keen to take a crack at the third one, Malcolm's Revenge.
3 is definitely the weakest of the bunch and includes the most annoying puzzles as well. The story is ok but the gameplay isn't nearly as fun as it is in 2.
It's always great to see Scarfulhu post, every vid is gold, you have a great way of structuring your vids.
I do appreciate how the game still has the over the top deaths. Slapstick knows no gender.
If you go along and pay enough to one of the snake oil salesmen on Volcania, they also eventually admit you just need to jump down one of the vents.
I seem to remember Zanthia punching the salesman after he admits this, but can't find any videos of it!
these kinds of graphics are just so much better/more interesting than all the modern 3D of today
These games were great. Westwood Studios made alot of my favourite games like Dune 2000, Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore, Command & Conquer, A Nightmare on Elm Street and the famed Lion King game.
Their Blade Runner game is excellent also!
Nice vid! Wasn't expecting to see my ancient GameFAQs review pop up when I started watching it, lol.
A neat easter egg a lot of people may not know about is Kyrandia 2 has a LOT of incidental dialogue -- Zanthia has 2 unique things to say on every screen if you click on her twice, and in Darkmoor Swamp her dialogue changes several times depending on what puzzle step you're on.
Another neat easter egg is that if you use the alchemist magnet on any NPC, you can hear their thoughts, which sometimes provides puzzle clues, and other times just funny dialogue. It gives the game a lot of personality beyond its main script!
I dislike Kyrandia 3 for a number of reasons, but I'm still looking forward to your video on it whenever you get to it :)

There’s a lot of connections between these games and the Lands of Lore RPGs. Some similar voice actors, Zanthia looks like Dawn, and if you look at bushes in the game your character will ask ‘Is that a Pseudobushiahuedeflora?’
You would think that getting tears from a crocodile wouldn't work, because they're fake. :P
I feel the reason for the obtuse item names is that its just what Zanthia calls those items

Me and my brothers have very warm memories about this game series. We actually bought Legend Of Kyrandia 3 first (Virgin White box re-release), and we bought 2nd game later on. We never really owned the 1st one, although a friend loaned us a copy. For the time, it was rather interesting to have a limited inventory space. 3rd one also did some things around moral/attitude choices. (which was user defined in any given situation). I hope you'll do a video about the 3rd game as well

Zanthia, in her starting outfit, look very similar to Dawn from Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos. Both games were made by the same studio, so it's not exactly plagiarism.
Ill be honest i never got passed the first area of this one for a long time until i watched a playthrough. Didnt know how to get passed the rat and figuring the potions stuff. I only played through the 1st one on both Amiga and PC a couple of times but played Malcolms Revenge a lot out of the whole trilogy

I recently played this with my partner together. Just like my parents did! We're gonna tackle the first one soon too. I've already beaten it many times so I look forward to his reaction. Absolutely incredible game.

Side note on the spellbook synonyms: I once heard it was very common for certain plants and mushrooms to have a nicknames which were a bit confusing.
I don't know this game! The only point and click games i know are Ankh, Next big thing and the Monkey island trilogy. That's it! This one looks fun 🙂 I love the music, the backgrounds are pretty, the voice acting is good. Thank's for sharing a video on it, it's very interresting!
3 was the only one I ever played when I was young, looking forward to the Malcolms Revenge video ( don't think I ever got off the Isle of cats )

Aah, Hand of Fate. My dad had to make a boot diskette to free up ram to even run the game properly. The good old days of DOS games and issues with "conventional memory" extended memory and expanded memory. Great game series though, when you could finally play them. And this was in 1993. You (and your friends) had to figure out all the puzzles yourself. No help from the internet. Which was both good and frustrating when you were stuck at one place for a long time. But the satisfaction and joy when you finally figured it out. (you rarely ever get this endorphine rush from games much anymore) This was how the games lasted for a long time. As adventure games aren't known for their replay value. Unless you waited to replay them as long as you take to make new videos of this series? Good video though.
as someone who does 3d modelling with frequency, the moment that you said that it is easier to make alternate costumes in 3d is easier than 2d irked me so much, because it isn't, you gotta make sure it looks good on all angles, edit the normals, rigg it, make the shader material and texture it, at the very least, every single one of these aspects take so much time you could make a whole 2d fashion week before even one of the steps is done

Wonder if one inspired the other in any way?
The Kyrandia series predates Dominic voicing Guybrush for the first time by a couple years, so it's just a somewhat similar cadence

while yes its very annoying that the initial goal of the game is just tossed away in an antilciamtic and sudden way, it DOES make some sense instory at least. THe villain was the one who told you where to go to solve the problem. Why would he tell you where to ACTUALLY go to thwart his plans? His whole MO was findign ways to make you waste time.
also surprised that Malcom's coming back for the finale and not have you fight, like, Bel-Rom's head or soemthing.
