  • In this video I show you how I made a knife block for your kitchen. The block is made from oak and filled with skewers. The skewers I got are from bamboo.The knife block holds around 8 kitchen knifes, 3 big, 5 small in my case.
    Here´s an Amazon Affiliate link to a Vitctorinox knife set, similar to mine:

    In made really good experiences with my knife set and thought this might be a good place to share that + it helps my channel :)

    Dear viewers,
    some people rightfully mentioned that I should have adjusted the blade height of my table saw to the thickness of my stock (from 0:55-2:42) If you don´t like what you see there you are correct! It is not safe to work with the blade fully extended and I will take care of that in future projects! Safety is the most important thing in the workshop and I don´t want to promote wrong behavior on this channel!
    Stay safe :)

      @smeefbeef367 7 років тому +1

      I'd also roll your sleeves up when using the table saw, the blade will stop when the safety is triggered by completing the circuit but only once your arm or hand has been dragged in and touched it.

    • @robdevenney
      @robdevenney 7 років тому

      Excellent point about the sleeves.... went back and watched the cuts and they are some pretty long baggy looking sleeves

      That´s a good point! I knew that rule for lathes of all sorts but it makes sense for the table saw as well! Thank you for the tip and thank you for watching!

    This is a neat idea. Thank you for also including the measurements in inches, for those of us who are still "old school". As I actually hate my current knife block, I can see this being on my list for when I get my table saw up and running.

      Thank you Stephen! I didn´t invent the skewer-solution but I also liked it a lot! Generally it is a nice weekend project and the only "tricky" detail is getting the miters exactly right. Also I found that the counter weight makes it a lot more stable on the kitchen counter as knifes with big handles might want to tip it over. Thank you for watching!

      Stephen I also appreciated the converted measurements, it's a nice touch that makes it feel more professionally made.

      I lost a finger on a table saw when I was 19. That made me cringe watching those angled cuts.

      Knowing my father cut off the fingertips on 4 fingers but was lucky the cut was a few millimeters away from the bone, I was so cringing about this...

    I like it. I might try to make one out of cedar but skeletonize it for air flow. My wife and daughters are always putting our knives away wet.

    • @pilotsworkshop4554
      @pilotsworkshop4554  7 років тому +7

      That sounds awesome! Skeletonizing should give it a really cool look! Also the wooden/bamboo sticks are perfect for that as they absorb and spread the moisture naturally. Good luck with the built!

    • @mikewhipp2984
      @mikewhipp2984 7 років тому +2

      This is a great idea but I also agree you should lower your blade to match your wood thickness. Also, at 1:20 you should be using your table_saw Sled. You should never push a piece of wood that is wider than it is longer against the fence. And use push sticks.
      LOL, I sound like the table saw police but you should always do that stuff. Again, great idea for a knife block. You can add so many more knives. I subbed too.

    • @mikewhipp2984

      Yeah, you are absolutely right. When I look at that now I am shaking my head in disbelieve, but at the time I didn´t even think about it. I am usually very concerned about safety in the workshop and also like to show the proper way to people, so I´m a bit embarrassed about those scenes... I will try to adjust that in future videos.
      Thank you for the kind criticism :) And good to have you subbed!

    • @pilotsworkshop4554

      Hmm good question, maybe glass balls can dull the knives, because glass is harder than the steel of most kitchen knives. But someone in the comments suggested rice, that might work if you dont want to use skewers.

    Wont using a hard surface at the bottom ruin the tip of the knife if letting the knife drop into the box?

    • @pilotsworkshop4554
      @pilotsworkshop4554  7 років тому

      Hi, only one knife of mine is long enough to even touch the bottom, the others just "float" in the sticks, and for the long one I am not afraid because it will rather pierce the wood at the bottom than damage the steel. A cool thing of the sticks/skewers is that you can not really drop a knife, you always have to "push" it down gently.

    • @pilotsworkshop4554
      @pilotsworkshop4554  7 років тому +1

      Hi, thank you! You´re right it´s a bit short but the worst that should happen is the knife piercing the bottom board a bit, the knife itself should be fine. The reason for the length is that I wanted to use normal skewers that I could buy in the supermarket.
      Hope that clears it up :)
