Making a Knife Block
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лют 2017
- In this video I show you how I made a knife block for your kitchen. The block is made from oak and filled with skewers. The skewers I got are from bamboo. The knife block holds around 8 kitchen knifes, 3 big, 5 small in my case.
Here´s an Amazon Affiliate link to a Vitctorinox knife set, similar to mine:

In made really good experiences with my knife set and thought this might be a good place to share that + it helps my channel :)

Dear viewers,
some people rightfully mentioned that I should have adjusted the blade height of my table saw to the thickness of my stock (from 0:55-2:42) If you don´t like what you see there you are correct! It is not safe to work with the blade fully extended and I will take care of that in future projects! Safety is the most important thing in the workshop and I don´t want to promote wrong behavior on this channel!
Stay safe :)
I'd also roll your sleeves up when using the table saw, the blade will stop when the safety is triggered by completing the circuit but only once your arm or hand has been dragged in and touched it.
Excellent point about the sleeves.... went back and watched the cuts and they are some pretty long baggy looking sleeves
That´s a good point! I knew that rule for lathes of all sorts but it makes sense for the table saw as well! Thank you for the tip and thank you for watching!
pls pls pls pls get a push bar....
Pilot´s Workshop ho
This is a neat idea. Thank you for also including the measurements in inches, for those of us who are still "old school". As I actually hate my current knife block, I can see this being on my list for when I get my table saw up and running.
Thank you Stephen! I didn´t invent the skewer-solution but I also liked it a lot! Generally it is a nice weekend project and the only "tricky" detail is getting the miters exactly right. Also I found that the counter weight makes it a lot more stable on the kitchen counter as knifes with big handles might want to tip it over. Thank you for watching!
Stephen I also appreciated the converted measurements, it's a nice touch that makes it feel more professionally made.
I clicked because it looked like you put spaghetti to hold the knives but in the end this is a really good video so I'm not disappointed at all
I thought it was someone standing on spikes or something
I would have put spaghetti too. I was sure it was that... happy to find your comment it means i'm not the only one
kinda worse than using rice tho
Spi Rale they were skewers
yes we watched the video Brian
Great video! But you might want to make a push stick for your table saw... Great work!
Thanks Trevor! Awesome that you liked it! I actually have 2 push sticks flying around in my shop, but looking at the video, i see what you mean. Don´t know why i didn´t just use them...
Ha ha. I knew if I scrolled down there would be a push stick comment right near the top. Cool knife block concept though.
I lost a finger on a table saw when I was 19. That made me cringe watching those angled cuts.
Knowing my father cut off the fingertips on 4 fingers but was lucky the cut was a few millimeters away from the bone, I was so cringing about this...
+Pilot´s Workshop also you should lower your blades and roll up your sleeves.
I like it. I might try to make one out of cedar but skeletonize it for air flow. My wife and daughters are always putting our knives away wet.
That sounds awesome! Skeletonizing should give it a really cool look! Also the wooden/bamboo sticks are perfect for that as they absorb and spread the moisture naturally. Good luck with the built!
Excellent work. Its so sweet to see everyone in the comments concerned for your safety lol x)
But please do get a push bar, I can't agree more
Thank you :) yes I will take care of that. I want to make many more videos ;)
Good to see Lidl own and proxxon tools, lower the saw blade, probably the best tutorial and best end product
Great project.... next time put your saw blade lower ... just above your wood.
Hey, that´s good advice! Good to have you watching!
This is a great idea but I also agree you should lower your blade to match your wood thickness. Also, at 1:20 you should be using your table_saw Sled. You should never push a piece of wood that is wider than it is longer against the fence. And use push sticks.
LOL, I sound like the table saw police but you should always do that stuff. Again, great idea for a knife block. You can add so many more knives. I subbed too.
I meant thinner than it is longer.
Yeah, you are absolutely right. When I look at that now I am shaking my head in disbelieve, but at the time I didn´t even think about it. I am usually very concerned about safety in the workshop and also like to show the proper way to people, so I´m a bit embarrassed about those scenes... I will try to adjust that in future videos.
Thank you for the kind criticism :) And good to have you subbed!
It is much safer.....
I am just a 16 year old kid and i dont understand alot in workshops but this has a uniqe use and design and i even think you can sell this knife holder for a good price, if i had my own house i would defintly buy one of these knife holders. :)
Thank you :) That means a lot! Thank you for watching :)
nice original design
Selten so eine geile und vorallem einfach umzusetzende Idee gesehen. Danke sehr. Hast du top gemacht. Den Werde ich mir auf jedenfall nachbauen. Ist auch ne prima geschenkidee für kochwütige Freunde. WEITER SO !!
Danke Sascha!
Solche Kommentare sind eine riesen Motivation! Viel Spaß und Erfolg bei Selberbauen :)
Sehr gerne, hast es Dir verdient!!
I wish. So many toys in this workshop.
Why do you need that much blade exposure for such a thin stock? 1/2 tooth beyond your stock thickness is all you need.
True, this will be fixed in future videos. Thank you for watching!
This is a smart idea
loved your presentation. simple and neat design.
Thank you!
Using skewers is a really good idea!
Awesome concept that I've never thought about!
you're a smart person got some nice technics and tricks there. Good work!
I see i'm not the only one who takes a handful of Ikea pencils for use in my shed........
Happy I´m not the only one xD
i love it how he has a table saw and a giant workshop but only one tiny kitchen draw for his knifes
Hahaha never thought about that ^^ kinda weird xD
cool. this is a nice design. practical.
wow nice idea!
Very nice!
I love how he is active in the comments, this channel will be big!
Best knife block I have ever seen.
Thank you :D
very clever design. thanks for sharing
perfect!
i wish i had an access to these kind of tools :(
This Is really awesome!
Love the design and build. Well done mate .
Thanks!
amazing really want to make one now
smart idea
Beautiful design ... thanks for the video 😊
You´re welcome, glad you liked it :)
this was super helpful thanks
I enjoy videos like this. Diresta style of using what you have. There is that pesky "safety bla bla" but it's been covered in the comments. We work to our skill level and this video creator is doing great. Just don't loose a finger..
Another great video and build. So glad I discovered your channel!
Thank you, I am glad about that, too!
Coole Idee. Ich denke, das wäre was für mich. Danke!
Viel Spaß beim Selberbauen :)
Creative!!!!
Nice shop man! Got some good looking tools, I want a disc sander like that!
Thank you! It´s a 250 mm (10 in) disc, if you´re searching ;)
I watch that one trending episode of Jun's Kitchen and now I'm being recommended this? Good show UA-cam
Awesome, thanks!
Good vid bro, keep it up
Thanks :D planning to!
ooh, what the. really nice video
Thanks, Van!
wow 👌👌👌its to good
Fantastic way to make all your knives to blunt.
Hey this is awesome
That was such a good video. You have gained a subscriber my friend.
Thank you so much :D
Who else thought someone was stepping on some toothpicks in the thumbnail 😂😂😂
Nikunj Patel me
Super job!!!:)-very nice:)
Thank you :)
The Stakes are very intuitive
Sau geil echt gut gemacht Top
Danke :D
Nice design, i like your video as well. Very nicely explained! I subbed!
That´s awesome :)
I dont know what the skewers cost but from the thumbnail it looked like pasta. I think it would work also. Anyhow this looks really neat!
Thanks :D Skewers came at around 12€ for 900 pieces.
The beginning of this vid gave me a commercial for a kick starter feeling. I thought he was going to pop out with "SO i invented DONG WOOD!"
Great video and good to know that you have acknowledged a safety flaw. But please please use push sticks! the stock could kick back at any time and that would be the end of your fingers, especially with the blade that exposed.
very nice vid tho m8 i'll maybe attempt this
I wondered whether you could fill instead with glass balls? Would that work?
Hmm good question, maybe glass balls can dull the knives, because glass is harder than the steel of most kitchen knives. But someone in the comments suggested rice, that might work if you dont want to use skewers.
coll
Very nice job, I will be making one of these. Ps get a push stick!!
Thanks! Have fun with the build!
Okay, just a question - has anyone tried to make one of these with ceramic rods? I'm no expert, but design like this or something similar that sharpened your blades a little every time you drew them seems like a great idea to me.
JESUS!!! You make me want to send you a push stick or one of those gripping things!
Subscribed
watching so it will get out of my recommended , kinda cool tho
Well than thanks for watching Keyan :D Feel free to watch some of my other stuff, too :)
thoses pizza baker arms XD loved the video btw
nice work you just earned sub nr 1.580
edit: congratulations you just jump close to 1000 sub in 2 days well earned
Thank you and good to have you :)
"let me show you this easy knife block build" then proceeds to use several thousand dollars worth of tools.
Show!👏👏👏
how much did it cost? I want to make for my mom on mothers day but im on a budget. :/
17Industries depends if you have the tools to do it, the wood is fairly cheap
Hey, that´s a nice idea! I already had the wood from another project, but that would be around 10€. For me the skewers were the only thing I had to buy. the 900 I needed came at around 12€.
The piece of steel I had, maybe a scrapyard or a local company can provide you with a small cut off. Have fun! Hope it works out :)
if you want cheaper, you can use plastic straws
The fact that he doesnt have a guard on his table saw and additionally he doesnt use the push stick just makes me wince
It looks like an apple ad xD
is that a saw stop?
you could also use pasta
Wont using a hard surface at the bottom ruin the tip of the knife if letting the knife drop into the box?
Hi, only one knife of mine is long enough to even touch the bottom, the others just "float" in the sticks, and for the long one I am not afraid because it will rather pierce the wood at the bottom than damage the steel. A cool thing of the sticks/skewers is that you can not really drop a knife, you always have to "push" it down gently.
Thank you for watching!
How do you know which knives to pull out if you can't see the blade??
Do you make and sale them?
What’s the name of the measuring tool you used to check the miter angle of your first miter cut?
Hi, it´s a precision protractor :)
Do skewers get pulled out too when you pull out a knife?
Hi, from time to time when I pull out the large bread knife. But usually everything stays inside. Thanks for watching!
Where are you from? Great job
Hey Kristijan, I´m from Germany. Thanks!
I think you shall make a rectangular box, and than cut the angle.
Can I order one?
im your 1000 subscriber :)
Awesome man :D
Freaking genius.
:D
Why would somebody dislike the video?
Liked because you could use no plastic if you have used stainless steel counterweight or a back plate doubled thickness . great woodwork
Thanks :D
Next time when your using a stain or a oil on wood always go with the grain makes it look better. a mistake i have made myself too many times.
the design could easily be modified to fit taller knives or more, etc. what would be interesting is a stain on half the skewers and mix them in, and stain the block in stripes with the grain.
That sounds very cool and complicated^^ I´m interested what your result will look like!
AHAHAH, I've been seeing this thumbnail in my suggested videos for a week or two and thought it was spagheti! Skewers make more sense...
if it falls over, time will slow down and enchant everything in a ballet of toothpicks
Haha it most certainly would, however so far it never came close to that :)
Hi i make the same without the angle but when i pull my knifes the sticks get out any idea?
Hi, you can take out some of the sticks so that the knifes sit less tight in the knife block. I always put just enough sticks that my smallest knife just holds on its own, so that there is not too much pressure when all knifes are in.
you got a nice kitchen mah nigga
Hahaha thanks dude :D I love it too!
Thanks for watching :)
Nice knife block , but you should've made it longer so that your longest knife couldn't touch the base to prevent the point of the blade from bending or breaking.
Hi, thank you! You´re right it´s a bit short but the worst that should happen is the knife piercing the bottom board a bit, the knife itself should be fine. The reason for the length is that I wanted to use normal skewers that I could buy in the supermarket.
Hope that clears it up :)
Pilot´s Workshop Your welcome. I assumed you choose the length because of the skewers. I am just concerned for your knives ;)
Don't knock it over haha.. Nice
When this thing fall you must clean all the stuff=)
du bist aus deutschland oder? man hört es ganz leicht aber dein englisch ist echt mega gut man hört kaum noch einen deutschen akzent
Ja bin ich :) danke!!
You should have made the skewers flush with the top of the block
Or you buy the Skewers first and shape the Knife Block after the Skewers rather than the longest knife like he did. *shrug*
That's what I meant
You should probably write that then. Your statement indicated he should cut the skewers to size. Not size the box after the skewers.
Its alot more practical to just cut down the skewers though
im your 2576 subscribers👍👍
Awesome :D
ur from the netherlands right ?
from germany
theye also sell parkside here in the netherlands
You should try angel hair pasta instead of skewers
Couldn't the blades scrape against each other?
Great! But can i use spagetti if i hven't stick?
Hi Grigorij,
yes that should work as well. Thank you for watching!
