  • Eric asked me to make a knife block on Twitch! Here's a great simple woodworking project!
Someone asked me on my Twitch livestream to make a knife block, so I decided to give it a shot with a big chunk of basswood that I had. As always, I wanted to add a little something extra, so I angled it back instead of forward and embedded a little shelf to hold a recipe book while cooking.
    TOOLS LIST:
(some are better than the versions I own)
    amzn.to/2aCJYGu - SawStop cabinet saw
amzn.to/2da9fOJ - Evolution miter saw (cuts wood, alum, steel, etc)
    amzn.to/2aD74wz - Dewalt DW735 benchtop planer
    amzn.to/2akFubx - Orbital Sander
    amzn.to/2ay8ICl - Dremel tool
    amzn.to/2q8C8wR - Tack Cloth
    amzn.to/2aXGr7t - Porter Cable 6" Jointer
    amzn.to/2axPah6 - Grizzly 14" Bandsaw
amzn.to/2awLSaO - Shop Fox Hanging Air Filter
    amzn.to/2akFN6c - 2HP Dust Collector
    amzn.to/2axPmNA - 1 Micron bag
    amzn.to/2ay8MSs - Digital Angle Gauge
    amzn.to/2al4cbH - Flush cut saw
    amzn.to/2aoi3tx - 100% pure tung oil
    amzn.to/2ayihkF - Quikclot clotting sponge
    amzn.to/2aLCCCN - First aid kit
    amzn.to/2aovz06 - Respirator
    amzn.to/2aW3nHn - Filters
    amzn.to/2aY182W - Eye protection
    amzn.to/2axUZ0X - Ear protection

Several people have mentioned that it needs some sort of drainage (which I never thought of). If that's a concern, you could route a little drainage channel to the back when cutting out the area for the knives.
    Thanks!

Drainage = turn the block upside down
Wet knives should not be put in the block anyway
If you want it heavier, put something heavy inside the wood, make a hole and glue it in

You're right, the basswood looks completely unassuming 'til you applied the tung oil, and then, it's like, "Oh, _wow_!" The variations in the grain color really make for both an interesting piece, as well as a beautiful piece of kitchen kit. A truly amazing project, Bob. One of your most beautiful to date.

Little advice I learned from making lighthouse shaped lamps with my dad : If you are worried about it being top heavy, you can easily use the router to make a few grooves underneath the base and add some thick lead wire (usually it's sold as solder for joining metal gutters) or even use a folded flat lead sheet. Just remember to cover it with rubber to hide it and make it slip proof

A little bit late, but i also saw a neat knifeblock design where you make a wooden box and fill it with skewers, sharp side down, you can put a bit of glue down at the bottom if you want to secure them but then you can put in all sorts of shapes of knives

  • @ardemus
    @ardemus 6 років тому +1

Nice. If you're making this, do consider where the block will live. Most places I've been have cabinets over the counters. The common, shorter, forward angled knife block design allows for pulling the knives in that limited vertical space, while this design wouldn't.

Bob, I love the design and the approach you took. I think one thing that might make a great addition to this would be a plexiglass shield (perhaps something you could slide in place as needed) to both hold a book open, and to protect it from spills and splashing. But that's not criticism, just an idea for how I might do one. Thanks for the inspiration!

Excellent project, Bob (as always). I read through the comments and didn’t any mention of this, (if I missed it, sorry), since a ‘template’ with each knife was made then routed it out, each knife will have to be returned to its slot. If you took the biggest knife and made all the slots that size, then any knife could go into any slot. Also, if you were making this project as a gift, unless you had their knives you wouldn’t know what size slot would be needed, just a thought...

I made mine by resawing a face off of a block, raising my table saw blade to slightly higher than my tallest blade, but shorter than the block of wood, and then then into (but not through) the wood to create the slots for my knives. My thickest knife required a couple of passes. Then I glued the face back on.

Hey Bob, a while ago on the Making It podcast (I think), you mentioned that you want your collection of videos to be the sort of thing where someone can think, "hey, I want to make this random thing, I think Bob made that thing a year ago, let's go check out that video!" For me, your videos are exactly that. Even if I don't want to make the exact project, it's awesome how you demonstrate so many techniques so genuinely and clearly. I just checked out this video today (after watching it randomly last year) because I want to make a wooden knife sheath and I remembered your technique for routing out the knife slots. Keep up the awesome eclectic projects!

The burning will dull your blades much much quicker. Whenever cutting, drilling, sawing, we want to keep the tools and work piece cold. It's why with metal we use cooling fluid. The burning is from the speed being too fast and moving to slow. You can change either one of those variable to help stop with the burning and dulling your bits if the they get too hot and deform

  • @mabrurh

Hi bob, I think it was also important to mention that the depth of the holes should be longer than the knives themselves. This is so that when the knives are dropped in, the tip of the knives aren't damaged by the impact. Cheers!

I love your videos!! Glad to see you making so many diverse ones. Have a quick "upgrade" idea for the block, adding a pin in the book holder ledge at each corner so when you are using the book and have it open to a certain page the book will stay open to that page.
    Keep up the awesome videos!!!

      @Willeth 7 років тому

Stephen Kalicki I completely agree, I was thinking of a V-shaped lip though. That way the book sits in the channel between the lip and the block - although possibly tricky to turn pages with that solution.

Pure Tung oil is considered food and toy safe. The oil is made from the seed of the tung tree nut. If you were to eat a significant quantity of the seeds, the chemicals in them would probably poison you but using the oil on your chopping boards is fine. Remember, Tung oil is a drying oil and therefore will polymerize. It is unlikley to be contaminating your food. Its pluses - Tung oil resists liquid better than just about any other oil, is highly resistant to mould and environmentally friendly.

Nice quick and dirty project. I probably would have routed the knife slots all the way to the bottom edge of the block, for drainage. For finish you could use block oil, or mineral spirits -- both food grade, non-toxic, and not derived from nuts. I would probably put oil in the slots as well, to keep the wood from swelling if someone puts a blade in wet.

you could also ad a couple vertical dowels to the corners of the shelf so when your cook book is open they holds the pages open for you :-)

it would be cool if you had one with the knifes rotated 90 degrees, and had a window on the front so you could see which knife you were taking out while in the holder. Great Video Bob.

Beautiful! I am just learning how to sharpen my knives so I cringe every time I place them loose into the knife drawer. But if I were to make something like this, my counter space clearance under the cupboards would require me to angle the knife handles towards me instead of away. Hmm... I might tweak the design to mount on the underside of a cupboard so I don't lose counter space... guess I'll be adding yet another item to my project list.

When doing the slots you want them to be longer than the knives you want to put in, otherwise they can dull, and possible damage your knives as you put them in.

Hi Bob. I'm no professional woodworker (and have no overall experience in making stuff) the main thing I was wondering was that you say that it holds a book well. is that the same with the book open. this is because I thought that it would have possibly helped by having some little posts up from the book shelf piece to hold the pages open. Like I say I have no experience in making stuff.

Simple and Efective. I would go for concave design just because I like to complicate stuff :-) Nice video man. Good luck.
