BUILD: Magnetic Knife Block

  • This build was a request from a friend, he had seen something like it commercially available, but wanted a specific color and size.
    There are 1/2 neodymium magnets embedded a couple millimeters from the surface to stabilize the blades so they don't tip sideways and or move around and ding up the cutting edge on the other blades. It also keepd the knife on the wood rather than scratching up the acrylic surface. Also the knifes pictured are just what I had on hand and not the knifes this was meant for, mine happen to have a 90 degree plunge that sits nicely on the acrylic but that not always going to be the case.
    The acrylic keeps fingers away from the blades and help secure the knifes in place incase the holder is jarred.
    The edges of the acrylic panels where flame polished with a MAPP torch to give it a nice professional look, and the metal standoffs were just store bought from my local plastics supplier.

    Great video...and I learned something. I never knew how to polish the edge of cut acrylic sheets...and now I know that it's done with fire! I will definitely remember this for the next project I do that involves Plexiglas.

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  8 років тому +2

      +StArFuRyZz you can get a bit better finish with progressive sanding but the fire is instant and still looks great so that's what I do. But learn on a practice piece and it can help to block off everything but the edge if your using thin plexi to avoid warping.

      Need to use MAPP and it won't work on polycarbonate just works with acrylic, but it beats the hell out of sanding through all the grits. Thanks for watching!

    Very nice looking finish product. Like others, I have to agree on the flame polishing. I've usually used sand paper to clean up edges and you can get them looking good, but that really gets it to a nice clear look.

      Thanks! The fame polishing works great. just have to remember to use mapp gas not propane. Also this only works well on acrylic, I wouldn't even try with polycarbonate.

    Looks nice. Cool project, at the end it seems that the space between the wood and the acryl is holding the knifes and you don't really need the magnets. I could be wrong of course.

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      Thanks! And yes the gap is all that is needed to hold the knifes upright the magnets just keep the knife against the wood rather than the acrylic and keep them from tipping or rattling when you move the knife block. The knifes pictured aren't the real knifes intended for the knife block either, the ones show have a taper at the handle and it pulls the blade off the magnets the real knifes (there are pics on my Instagram) sit properly and the magnets work very well.

    Very nice, clean look. I'd be a bit worried that I'd scratch up the acrylic, maybe glass would prevent that, but it's obviously harder to work with. That's poplar right?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      Thanks the magnets keep the knife blades off the acrylic. As for using glass it's not a bad idea and wouldn't be too hard I worked with glass quite a bit for many years and would be very doable. And yes it's poplar.

  • @chrishaugh1655

    looks very cool, i would get one for myself, but... how to clean the inside if it gets dirty (i don't would open it by myself in fear of never get it back together) and where does the magnetic effect apply? the knifes seems to be holded only by gravity

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      The plexi is only held on with 2 screws., it's super easy to remove and clean. The magnets are just to keep the blades off the plexiglass and keep them from sliding around when the block is moved.

    Beautiful looking block. One question, wouldn't the narrow gap between the perspex and the wood keep the knives secure without the magnets?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      Steven Mason Thanks! You're right they would stay put without the magnets, but the magnets keep the blades off the acrylic and keeps them from tipping back and forth and rattling when the block is moved. Its just an added bit of security, but could be left out if needed.

    • @stevenmason1674
      @stevenmason1674 9 років тому +1

      TabLeft Workshop I like the idea of the magnets to keep the blades straight and off the acrylic. My question was not meant as a criticism, I was just wondering if the magnets were necessary. I've been looking at your other videos, love 'em. picked up a few good tips and tricks.

      Supremos87 about 1/4" if I recall. This was made for someone else so I don't have it to reference

    can we use propane, would it yield the same result?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому

      Nope! MAPP is recommended for this propane doesn't burn hot enough, if you hold there long enough for the edge to clear up the surrounding acrylic will yellow and warp

    What size are the standoffs used? Where did you get them?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  8 років тому +1

      It was made for a friend so it's not here to measure but if memory serves they were 3/4" and I got them from a local plastics distributer called "Tap Plastics" they also have an online store if you wanted to order some.

    Can you put timestamps on your videos so that we know how long it takes to do these projects?

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому +3

      Tayloo sorry these aren't really tutorials, just example of how I work, and hopefully inspiration for your own projects. Plus time to build would be too fluid since everyone's tools and skill level are different. But this took only a couple hours to build.

    nice... but the one thing i see happening is the acrylic getting very scratched while putting and taking out the knives...

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      The magnets keep the blade on the wood. So far the acrylic is fine and scratch free
