    "25 Minute TUT Strength Training for Seniors and Beginners"
    In this 25-minute full body workout for seniors and beginners, we will build muscle from head to toe with a TUT or “time under tension” strength training approach. This seniors strength workout slows down each exercise repetition, enabling you to learn the exercises slowly while building muscle!
    This routine is perfect for people who want to start exercising or increase their strength levels. It's simple, straightforward and easy to follow, so you'll be able to do it at home anytime! After watching this video, you'll be able to start strengthening your body the easy way!
    We will do just 5 exercises and repeat them 4 times to really challenge your muscles! These all level beginner exercises with dumbbells for seniors can be done in a chair or standing. Don't have dumbbells? Do the exercises without equipment to get the moves down and use household items like water bottles, cans, or even bags of beans. Join my mom to do seated exercises for seniors and beginners or join me standing to increase the challenge and test your balance.

    TUT (time under tension) refers to the length of time a muscle is contracting against an external resistance. Muscles generate tension to move an external load (like a weight). In the case of a bicep curl, the contraction occurs when you bend your elbow and lift the weight. Lengthening occurs when you straighten your arm. In both actions, your muscle is under tension.
    A traditional set of 10 reps performed at a standard speed of one to two seconds lengthening and one to two seconds of contraction may only take 15 to 20 seconds. Slowing the movement speed down to a four- to six-second lengthening phase followed by a two- to three-second shortening action for the same 10 reps can increase the amount of “time under tension” or TUT up to 90 seconds and cause the necessary mechanical damage and metabolic fatigue that results in muscle growth.

    I have been doing your workouts for about 6 weeks now I am 71 and recently had a scare with a very very high blood pressure reading. I am really enjoying your workouts and I also have a large rescue ginger cat called Obi who often wanders past while i am exercising. My blood pressure is now heading in the right direction with help from medication, a change in diet and all your great exercise routines . Thank you

    I never comment on videos but just had to say how thankful I am for you both. I’ve just restarted my fitness journey at the beginning of the year due to some health issues. I am in my 30s but morbidly obese so exercise has been rough. But your exercise videos are amazing. I use your strength and walking videos 5-6 days a week. Keep doing what you are doing, it’s so much appreciated and needed!

    I had done this one before and for some reason didn't give it a thumbs up or a reaction. So...this is a unique way to maximize strength training. I felt it in working every muscle including my timing. I took a little bit of time to get it right, but all was well worth it. Thank you for the King TUT approach--powerful indeed!...Anastasia

    Hi April and Aiko and Misho wherever you are. This was a great workout. I used to do a class called Body Pump in my younger days with this format. It was nice to be able to have this format with light weights. I had to go down to the chair with mom for certain moves. She does better than me on the toilet move. I can't get my booty to touch the chair. Have a great weekend. I will see you for the next workout and hopefully Moshi too.

    I really like this style of strength training. Sometimes in the gym, you see people going as fast as they can, it seems. That seems like it capitalizes on gravity, but going slowly makes you fight gravity.

    This is new to me. I didn't think I would feel much from these exercise as your going slow. I am amazed to feel the muscles really working with these steps. Nice and slow but does work. Thank you.

    I used to be in good shape without extra exercise, because I got a workout doing daily chores. House work, yard work, laundry, groceries. The real workout was cooking. I used to cook everything my husband and I ate from scratch. Everything. My pantry looked like it could have been from 100 years ago. Unfortunately I injured my feet (plantar fasciitis) from all that cooking and had to wear special shoes and stop cooking as much. My husband retired and took on a lot of chores. Now I'm in need of muscle building exercise.

    You'd have never guessed it but doing all this exercise exacerbated an issue with my spine (in my neck) causing a pinched nerve (which I ignored for a few days cos I thought it was just muscle pain until my left side went numb!)
    BUT it's actually for the better, because had I had been sedentary, then the issue with spine wouldn't have been discovered until much much later and it would have been harder to correct.
    So thank you ladies!
    I'll be back for even more gentle exercise once I get the OK from the chiropractor and GP.

    Great workout and very enjoyable. I was surprised to see how hard the "slo-toes" (heel raises) exercise was to do with full stability and control so that it was steady and not too quick or jerky. At first glance it would seem the easiest. Easy to do fast, hard to do slooooow. The knee-raise pulldowns were a great balance move too. Going slow feels like a "mindfulness" kind of thing too because you really become aware of your body and practice patience. Great work putting these together for us! ... BTW, I am still enjoying the 20-20-20 workout when I need a quick energizer! :)

    Just thought I'd give this a trial however , I plan on lots of practice because this was not easy . Balance was difficult but I believe with practice it will improve . The time went by so quickly but I liked the moves & of course your presence . Honestly this was a bit advanced for me but I am aware of the goals I can learn & use .     I just finished this TUT Strength Training workout. I thought it was awesome and a much-needed variation from the regular videos. I was progressing through with 4-pound weights and didn't feel the burn or tingle. You stated you were using 5 pounds and I also changed mine.     I started with 2 lb weights, but think I need to use heavier weights.The “Pull Down” was so hard to get used to. My left leg is weaker. I definitely need to keep doing that one. It is great to have a challenge. Thanks for the video.

    I have done most of your workouts with little to no challenges. I found the standing balance a lot challenging so I used one arm and other hand on the chair. Much better control that way. Also would like to add on the heel raises, how about adding up on the toes too (seated) as this also strengthens the front part of the leg and works the calves too. For that exercise I need to be careful as I broke my foot and need to be careful how many I do. Other than that, another awesome challenge! Thank You!

    I loved this workout! Thank you so very much for sharing it. If I might ask a question please... Does it matter what direction my feet are pointing? I suffer from a bit of pain in the tops of my feet and want to make sure I am not making it worse. Do they need to be straight forward or does it matter?

      Wonderful. We suggest doing this workout 2-3 times a week with at least a day of rest in between. Listen to your body, if you feel soreness after the workout, take a break the next day and do some gentle stretching and gentle walking until it subsides. Keep on building muscle! 💪

    This workout is really challenging. Thanks a lot. I did the first two sets standing and the last two sets sitting. I noticed that it's kind of different. I worked my legs better standing, of course, but I think I worked my abs better sitting than standing. Is it possible ?

    Thank you for your videos. I have been enjoying doing them regularly. Unfortunately I recently suffered a third tear to my rotator cuff and now can't do the arm movements required in your aerobic and strength routines. Do you have a routine that can be done with this injury in mind? I have found, talking with friends, that many older people have a similar injury.

      Sorry to hear about your rotator cuff tear. We recommend you consult with your doctor and/or physical therapist on the best exercises to do at this stage of your recovery. We wish we could be more helpful and recommend specific exercises, but your injury requires a customized recovery plan that is approved by health care professionals. I have had physiotherapy etc and have been advised that this is likely to be an ongoing issue and to now avoid exercises that could aggravate the situation. I believe there is a balance between not doing shoulder moves and maintaining a good degree of mobility and strength. I am looking for exercises that can fit in with programmes like yours balanced with the needs of the injury and have friends looking for the same..

    I finally tried this one today and found it wasn't as hard as I'd feared, using 3-pound weights. I might even try it with 5-pound weights next time. I needed to use a chair, like Aiko, for the pulldowns, because I wasn't able to balance well enough standing on one leg to do the exercise properly, but I did the rest standing and even held one weight during the squats for sets 2, 3 & 4.
