Top 10 Amiga Arcade Ports

  • There were a lot of ports from the arcades to Commodore's 16Bit flagship. Flagship being A500 - while not the most powerful, definitely the most popular and wide spread. :) And these games spawned from the very beginnings of arcades to titles ported when both Amiga and arcades themself were on their last legs. In means that in the top 10, even with few honorable mentions, not all titles favored by everyone could be fitted. So, this is the top 10 as I feel it should look like. Not all games here are games I actually liked or even play anymore, but I believe all have their fair spots on it. So, have a look and let me know what you think!
I make all the videos in my spare time and currently work towards replacing a mic, couple of bits here and there in my rapidly aging editing rig (as it has developed a nasty habit of crashing my editing software on a totally random basis) and hopefully a camera. So, if you like what I do here and feel generous, I would appreciate any help towards these goals. You can donate either via PayPal or Skrill or support me on Patreon. You don't have to though if you can't or don't feel like it. A like and Subscribe is great too!

For the purpose of creating this video I've used WinUAE emulator which I recommend to anyone at least semi-interested in Amiga gaming and not willing to spend money on real hardware. All that is required to play the games is:
    - The WinUAE emulator (winuae.net)
    - Amiga's kickstart file
    - ADF files with games
ADF files are disk images corresponding to floppy disks used for Amiga games. You can easily find them with a bit of googling usually by typing something akin to "game title adf amiga download". Same could be said about kickstart files but these can also be purchased via Amiga Forever website with one of their packs (www.amigaforever.com) or even cheaper (last time I checked it was $0.99) on Android as a part of Amiga Forever Essentials. And these files can be easily moved to PC.

Rainbow Islands and Golden Axe were fantastic on the Amiga, as were Super Hang On & Arkanoid, so I’m glad they got mentioned. I love R-Type & R-Type II but yes, they are damn hard. The Bubble Bobble music gives me a massive wave of nostalgia every time I hear it, taking me back to the 80’s playing 2 player with my mates.
There are so many great arcade conversions on the Amiga (& some absolute train wrecks) that you couldn’t reasonably cover them all here but for anyone just discovering or rediscovering the Amiga all of the games in this video are worth playing.
    Great video, thanks.

Bubble Bobble's music is probably the most iconic out of all on this list. And I really wanted it here but two previous attempts with that game on my channel ended up with copyright claim.
And I'm sure that even if someone doesn't know it's from this game, they would recognise the tune and be able to tell that they heard it before. It's so great!

Back then most games were all about skill. Sometime about showing that skill off (highscores). They rarely had any plot, and only relied on addictive gameplay loop. At least those that originated from arcades. Today, there's hardly any arcades left anywhere. So, games moved on to more story-based adventures. Regardless of the genre the games themself are.

3:55 - Perfect example of the computer riders intentionally trying to hit you.
Arkanoid - The Amiga version looked arcade perfect and had a second set of levels, but I actually preferred playing the C64 version for one simple fact: You could play it with a set of Atari paddle controllers. I never really liked using a mouse in place of a paddle. I was really disappointed when the C64 version of Arkanoid II removed the paddle option!
Mortal Kombat - It's not unusual today, but back then, I had a copy of this game that was hacked to run from a hard drive, so no disk swapping required. I used to do fairly well, but I could never beat Goro. It always seemed like he could grab me from halfway across the screen. As soon as I even got close to him, he'd grab me and take off a big chunk of my health.
Rodland - It's a good port of the arcade, but they left out the whole second part. If you completed all the levels in the arcade version, it would start a whole new set of levels with different enemies. Unfortunately, this was left out of all the home versions. Not that I'm good enough to get that far without cheating...

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Рік тому

Mortal Kombat was great, I didn't have a harddrive but I had cracked version that used only 2 disks so it was tad less swapping too. In general first MK was fair, other than Goro, I agree that he cheesed his way out of some attacks but same happened in the arcades so can't really blame Probe for that. MK2 was a hot garbage when played alone because the game down right cheated all the way through. But it was amazing with a friend.
Rodland - is an was my most favorite single screen arcade platformer. And yeah, even if there was another set of levels, I too never completed it so wouldn't seen it anyway. ;)

@@OldAndNewVideoGames Thank you for your good work! Back in the late 80's and early 90's I had many friends who had an Amiga 500. Most of them had a C64 before too. And so there always were most of the new games available. Also games were sold at flea markets back then and no one cared. So I had the plvilege to play 80- or 90% of the Amiga games until 92 or 93.
We even sometimes played Warlords with four people. When someone made his move all others left the room ;-). Yeah, good old times when I was 12 to 15 years old and played on the Amiga 500... .
I bought many games too. Even on the 64. Some were great like Airborne Ranger or Zak Mc Kracken on the C64. Or later some great games (which I later played on my Amiga 1200 with a hard drive) like Dune 2, History Line, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Ambermoon, Gunship 2000, Wing Commander (which had a good playability back then on my Amiga 1200), Alien Breed 3D, Lost Patrol and so on. I invested most of my money in games back then.
My first two games I bought (- got the money for christmas) were Batman The Movie and Moonwalker for the C64.
But soon after this (I think in 1990 or 1991 I got an Amiga for christmas). I always played at friends homes the years before I had my first own computer, which was an old C16.
I think the first C64-game I played was Yie Ar Kung Fu in 1985 or 1986. And the "Games"-series by Epyx. Or Spy vs. Spy, Cauldron, Falcon Patrol, Zaxxon, Blue Max and so on. Very impressive back then for a machine at ones home.
I grew up with the very old black and white games you could play on a tv, called tennis or football, which didn't have real sprites. It was on a type of console but I only know the german name ("Telespiel").
Then the Atari 2600 at a friends home and some arcade games like Galaga on holiday trips with my parents.

Plays much better with actual amazing analogue controls if you go with mouse, has better sounds and all the stages. The biggest thing with the md version was the career mode. That being said, you really should try Ghosts'n'Goblins on the Amiga. It is by far the best arcade conversion on the system, the best conversion of the game on any system (well apart from Sharp x68000, but that was a different beast altogether), arcade perfect (apart from the fact that you cannot turn and face the other direction while jumping). I know, but I wanted official games only in the list. I might do a separate video in the future regarding either new games in general or new ports to the system. We'll see. Next one's already in the making.

Not really sure why Super Hang-on Amiga is on here, ZZKJ was a clueless ST coder who did even worse Amiga games. Batman the Movie on ST had a better framerate lol

Well, Super Hang-On is here cause it's a banging port. Great playing and not far off from arcade original. Given the Amiga's capabilities.

Still pretty good for his first try coding an Amiga and was originally not meant to be released, was just for personal coding practice.
