@@oldstylegaming I started with ColecoVision, then C64, Amiga500 and the rest consoles. Now i'm on a high end PC with all the goodies on it, but as i said and its true....A500 was the big deal. Lost track of how many years I spent playing on Indy 500 and Formula 1, as you say near perfect simulations. When I sold my Amiga they were the 2 games i missed. I remember you could lower the graphics levels to make the game smoother. Amazing. Great video

I have to second t he calls for Jaguar XJ220. Seeing it on the Amiga made me buy it for the Sega CD. The storyline added to the racing as you had to budget repairs (the damage stopped you from playing bumper cars) and find the cheapest next location (which made geography fun). The soundtrack reflected the rise of house music at the time with some great Roland-303 sounding acid house rhythms.

Top job my friend, you are an absolute champion to put out this Video. This one hit home pretty hard ! Half the games you showed I didn’t even remember until I saw them and it brought back so many memories from 25 years ago. The amount of fun I had with these games cannot be expressed with words or pictures and I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.
My channel and your channel are complete opposite’s But at the end of the day viewers can see the passion in the video we make and know exactly what we’re talking about. (Even though I’ve never spoken in my videos) I love your channel It brings back so many memories, But I love the most is the C64 and Amiga500 videos.
Fun fact your number 1 selection in this video was definitely one of my favourites , I used to turn around on the first lap and hit all the cars out so I could win the race but a lot of people don’t realise there was a cheat built in on the game where regardless of your position in the race even if you’re losing and the race was basically finished on your last lap of the race instead of going past the chequered flag you pull into the pits and you would get first place every time. I can’t remember how I found this out But it works every time on every race👍🏻

The multiplayer feature of F1GP using a single machine was fantastic back then, so much fun without any effort or extra hardware.
Fun fact: I noticed Gerhard Berger mentioned in a message at the end of the video. Since the drivers' real names were not available due to licensing, we had to modify them ourselves. It looks like this is the case in the video as well. Fun times.

And Geoff Crammong? He is The Man! Formula One Grand Prix, great game for that era! and he created, later for PC, GP2,GP3 and GP4!

old style gaming : Oh Yeah , I forgot that one. It’s one that should’ve been on my list too. What a machine the A500 is. So many masterpieces in all genres. I would’ve serious problems making a top 50 list. Maybe I could pull of a top 100 , but I’m not 100% convinced. Think abou it :
      Racers
      Platformers
      Shoot’em ups/slashers
Strategy games , real time & turnbased
      Point ’n’ click
      God/building games
      Puzzlers
      Simulators-planes/trains/cars/tanks/boats
      Rpg’s real time & turnbased
      Adventure/action games
      Sports
      Fighting games

Super hang on was a surprisingly good arcade conversion on the Amiga. lotus 2 is God like though, from the absolutely banging intro music to the graphics that almost convince you that the Amiga was capable of hardware sprite scaling.

  • @sergeinester6261
    @sergeinester6261 4 роки тому +1

I would have added Super Hang On a genius port but also a brilliant racer by one of the best coders on Amiga ((Archer McClean). The sound effect of the whining turbo is brilliant. The use of mouse control was brave but so much more responsive than joystick once mastered. And the sense of speed - incredible. I agree with a lot of your list but a crime to leave this one out. Also. You forgot racing desctruction set on C64 - I remember playing this and landing my motorbike in the back of a pickup - and it kept going til I was bounced out when that player rolled - genius.

Vroom is my favourite racing game on the Amiga and one of the best ever, it's just that no other game plays like it (and its pseudo sequels by Domark), and the story behind the game and its creator is interesting as well (the game started on the Sinclair QL..'nuff said!). What a powerhouse the Amiga was for racing games, the polygonal games were impressive for the times and the hardware. Other Amiga racing games I like: TopGear 2 (underrated Lotus style game), Road Rash (great conversion), Super Hang On (again, underrated very good conversion) and F17 Challenge (Italian developed game published by Team 17, kind of like a better looking version of Pole Position or Continental Circus).

    Nostalgia at its best.
    A couple of fun facts.
In the LETC II there was one track with no refulling spot, if you nailed your racing keeping at max speed all the way instead of getting a perfect time you ran out of fuel just before the finish line!
Also in LETC II. You could connect two Amigas with null-modem cable and play with two players on each Amiga. We did at a dorm where I live and it worked well even with a 50 meter cable.
Vroom as well as Indianpolis 500, F1GP and Stunt Car racer also came out for PC and well on 80386 machines - some of others likely did also. Wroom was a late release for PC as I recall and it was put out on CD, maybe to try and pretend it was a big game as a selling point. Only since I knew it from Amiga I took a good look on the disc - it was no problem to fit it on a single 3½disc only using normal compression and there was room to spare.

@1:20 Anybody know what the best all around Off Road port is? I don't want to emulate the arcade version because it feels weird without the wheel so I'm specifically looking for a port that is designed around digital controls. And on that note I am absolutely dying to play A.P.B by Atari again ever since I played the cabinet as a kid, but again the controls don't feel right without the wheel to the point of being damn near unplayable with an Xbox 360 controller.

  • @Leeki85
    @Leeki85 4 роки тому +1

You should definitely try MS-DOS racing games. Racing and simulation games were the first ones that showed PC superiority over Amiga. PCs had way faster CPUs and 2D hardware acceleration become irrelevant for 3D graphics. Also, PC joystick port supported four analog axis and 4 buttons, so it was perfect for racing games.
Also PC racing games quickly adopted powerful 386DX and 486 CPUs that gave high framerate and improved draw distance. There were racing games in every type:
World Rally Fever - pushed classic Outrun/lotus-like graphics to it's limits with arcade like super-scaler effects,
Wacky Wheels - Mario Kart clone, with just OK gameplay, but awesome music, and super low hardware requirements for it's time.
Death Rally - top down racing with 3D-ish graphics,
Super Karts - very popular kart racing game, with Wolfenstein3D like raycaster engine, it supported 90's VR headsets.
Megarace - CD-based FMV racing, where pre-rendered track is displayed as an animation. It was also available on Sega CD, but PC version worked in 256 colors (up from 64) and looked way better with better framerate.
Most of games you listed are also available on DOS. Many of them as good, or even better (higher frame rate), but it didn't stop there. DOS got more advanced games like "Nascar Racing" from 1994 that had fully textured cars and tracks.
Games like Need for Speed or Screamer series could easily compete with PSX, Saturn and even arcade games.
When it comes to racing games, MS-DOS was the best platform in the 1990-1995, then games started to support Windows 9x.

Good list and agree with your number 1, but here's some of my favourites, followed by my reasons why Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge is superior to its sequel:
Hard Drivin' - You could design your own tracks and make a loop de loop and your lap would be saved as a ghost that you could play against; revolutionary for its time.
RVF Honda - Third person motorbike game which had a great sense of speed.
Super Hang-On - Another great motorbike game.
Road Rash - Ditto, but you can smack people with clubs.
Lombard RAC Rally - Incredibly realistic rally game for its time, you would have to deal with damage and obstacles and it was awesome.
Buggy Boy - A simplistic but fun racing game.
As regards Lotus, the sequel's graphics weren't as smooth in my opinion and the sense of speed suffered. Sure it had jumps and water hazards which were cool, but it had a checkpoint system so you didn't get to know the track and when you didn't meet the checkpoint, it was game over. They did away with the fuel aspect which was an absolutely crucial part of the original; the decision whether to pit in now or save it for the last lap vs your opponent was absolutely nerve-wracking. Going around the world to different locations was awesome and varied the game a lot.

I swear there was a game I played like supercars but wasn't supercars. It had longer tracks in more of a built up urban + green area, and slightly more iso view. You'd go from bottom left of the screen to top right for longer tracks, loop around and all that. Colors were more vibrant.
After years I can't find it and no one knows. I must have hallucinated it.
