    I love this channel..... Not only are all the videos well thought out and revised, he shows me games iv'e never seen before, and i am 44 years of age.
    A lot of the games he does show, i can still get on Steam, GOG or other online sources.
    His videos give a real chilled, cosy vibe, and what's best i feel like i'm listening too a mix of inspector Poirot and Puss & Boots.

      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Місяць тому

      Now, that's a great mixture! A little serious, a little silly, I mean both Puss and Poirot are classics! Also, thanks a lot for your kind words! :)
      And also also, so a double, perhaps grammatically incorrect also (but who cares!?), age is but a number. In this time and day, quite literally. If you look how people looked at 44 fifty years ago, they were more similar to today's 70-year olds. We are the digital generation, and we age like old computer do. So fast but graciously, and we keep style way longer than anyone could've predicted. xD
      I don't think I'm making much sense. xD

    Lords of Magic was a blast. 98 made me 16. High school, dating my now wife, and oh so many games.
    The games were the highlight of the time. There, i said it, whats my wife going to do? Make me sleep on the couch? I already do for the sake of my shoulders and sanity, since she snores like a dragon with a head cold.

    1998 was such an amazing year. It's so weird we didn't think of it like that at the time, but 1997-2001 or so was such a brief golden age that never really came again.

    It's always hard for me to pick between Heroes 2 and 3 since I love them both... but I have noticed as I grow older I keep going back to HoMM2 more, I think it's the pixel graphics that really does it for me. Blue mouthwash... Now that makes a lot of sense. I was always curious why mages needed that blue liquid to cast spells. They had to say the encantation with a fresh minty breath, otherwise it wouldn't work.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Місяць тому +1

      Imagine that you had to chew all those roots, shrooms and such, you know for spells, so that when they casted them eventually, all they were left with was a bad taste. And smell. So a mouthwash, was a solution. Hence forth, why nearly each and every RPG game features it.

    Urban Assault has some elements of Battlezone (1998). For Microsoft, it's another game which both promotes DirectX and most importantly, Sidewinder joysticks, which were pretty sweet. I've still got my Force Feedback Pro, but I haven't put together the drivers to get it going.
    In my brain, Civ II: Multiplayer Gold should be called CivNet II
    Test Drive is an odd series.
    1&2 were old fashioned pseudo-3D, while TD3 was a big leap into early 3D. None of these games played well, but they had a presentation which allowed them to sell well. TD3's tech was pretty good for the time and this made up some for the whole shallowness issue.
    Here's a MobyGames review headline on Test Drive: "It's a classic, but being a classic doesn't stop a game from not being very good". I think that's accurate.
    There's a 7-year gap between TD3 and TD4 (Also Test Drive: Off Road). It doesn't feel like the same series anymore but an old name polished up. These new games were never great on the PC; They were Playstation games, and those games ported forgettably. The assets and mechanics were designed for the lesser system. These games have the DNA of the early PS game Destruction Derby from developer Pitbull as opposed to the original American company, Accolade, who were developers at Atari and Mattel Electronics in the original console era. By Test Drive 6, Infrogrammes had the Test Drive rights and Accolade when away in 2000 fully.
    The Test Drive name floated up and down until the mid 2010's. I think Need for Speed took over the "classic casual racing game" spot thanks to be an EA game.
    Another company has the rights to Test Drive and promises a new game this year.
    Lords of Magic: Special Edition. It never occurred to me that the expansion was barely released on it's own. I saw both boxes in the stores enough. If one side of Impressions was Caesar based games, the other was Lord of based games. The Casear games exist in modern games like the Anno games, and in theory the Lords of games connect to Total War in gameplay. Total War is old enough that Shogun: Total War was released 4 years before Lords of the Realm III.
    There were so many RTS clones, and some chose to stand out on look. I suspect the theme was reformed from a standard post-apoc into something tacky late into development to try to be the 1998 version of a meme. Originally I bet the game was more pure generic "mad max". The cheap cutscenes look very much like "Redneck Rampage", except all done wrong. Rather than boosting sales, it probably drove away the possible audience, which was already small for a generic looking clone.
    Rogue Squadron - the far less common N64 port. N64 games had better 3D tech, but they had few textures. They looked wrong on the PC, but for different reasons. And by 1998, an N64 game would fly especially bad in the 3Dfx world. This game felt like a cheap cash-in at the time as a PC game. It's OK to be an arcade shooter, but it needed to justify the presence on the PC.
    HOMM:II isn't new at this point, but the game was had been getting better for two years, something that didn't usually happen at the time.
    I wasn't into Oddworld at the time either, but I think it feels an important niche.
    You know, I never played Chaos Gate and I don't know why. It seems like a game I would have been looking for. I had a fresh computer and video game cash to blow in 1998. I know the box well enough. I had bought other Warhammer games. I wasn't as picky in ..who knows?
    On the other hand, I know why I didn't get The X-Files Game. I wasn't into The X-Files. I didn't hate it, I just found it too cheesy and I tire of conspiracy and Aliens. More importantly, it's an FMV game in 1998 which had very little of the actual cast despite the canon nature. This was not going to sell to me. There are some positive vibes about the game now for whatever reason, but reaction at the time was poor.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  27 днів тому +1

      It SHOULD be called CivNet 2! And it was a fantastic game. It's the fourth most played Civ game of mine. Currently it's Civ5 > Civ6 > Civ4 > Civ2MGE.
      Yep, and Test Drive 4 & 5 were just meh, and didn't awe with much. Well, unless you had no other arcade racers. I did actually enjoyed Test Drive Unlimited on PSP. But truth be told, I liked a lot of games on PSP, it was an amazing little system. NFS games on it sucked though. Which is rather odd, given how well they would've played on it if given attention and time.
      Not gonna lie, since we're on the subject, I think I liked TW: Rome the most. Though I've yet to try the latest 2-3 games.
      It's funny how neither of us cared for Oddworld, when most of the Regularworld did ;) OMG! Those puns of mine are getting more cringe by the minute. xD Still, what I said is still on point, and Oddworld just never landed for me, regardless how many times I gave it a chance, and tried to get through it. And everyone seemed to love it. It's importance, naturally, despite my not caring for it, is unquestionable.
      I liked The X-Files when they originally run, I really did, like most folks. But unlike most, I don't care for it today, like at all, and most of my friends seem to hold a lot of melancholy for it. xD
      Oh, the new obscure DOS games video should be out tomorrow, and I think you'll find the selection interesting. I've pretty cool games for it.

  • @martiusr2404
    @martiusr2404 27 днів тому

    Tribal Rage was IMO extremely intriguing game, but had bad luck with being released during the "RTS flood" and not having everything well developed (e.g controlling the game with all its features like supplying your troops and fighting at the same time). There was also some interesting stuff in Polish magazine Gambler - by some reason reviewer (Jacek Piekara) has named the Trailer Trash faction as "Traktorzyści" (Tractor Drivers) - I really don't know if it was the term made in Polish manual (never had Polish manual in hands, and the game itself was in English), or if it was made-up by the reviewer, but I liked this name more than Trailer Trash. Somehow it was relating better to the "main thing" of that faction - so being extremely focused on keeping an eye on their fields (and killing those who were wasting them).
    I regret a lot, that there was never a sequel for this game, with better control and giving something more in terms of story (it's basically non-existant in original Tribal Rage). But I guess 1998 was for smaller titles a hard time to be released, with so many popular and well developed games in that year.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  26 днів тому

    Yeh, Test Drive 4/5 is disappointing. Shame really.
    Rogue Squadron was fantastic! (In spite of the escort missions) Whilst I have it on PC now & I mean right now my ex & me plaid through it first on N64. Let’s be honest though… “it had a story?” 😄
    Speaking of gaming with my ex, we plaid through both Oddworld 1 & 2 on the PS1 & we both loved every minute of it but we did put a lot of time in to it & use both our brains to figure out what to do. Put 2 halfwits together you get a full wit.
