'Amazing character'. Except for the part where they robbed him of literally every single part of him that was connected to his original character. @@TheKyrix82 I’m glad they drove him away from his original character. Zemo in the comics wasn’t as captivating as he was in the movies, and I found myself more invested in this Zemo!
@@bloof5455 I couldn't be less invested in the character. He had literally nothing to link him to the character. Nothing at all. Not an aristocrat. No links to World War 2. This is like if they'd opted to make Hawkeye a Brazilian Sumo Wrestler with electrical powers who never went within 50 feet of a bow. I mean, these characters have existed for the better part of a century now, there are literally thousands of villains to draw from, and new ones are being made ALL the time. It's really not a huge stretch to find SOMEONE they could have used instead of Zemo. Hell, use one of Tony's villains, since despite being a Cap movie Civil War was very much a 'Tony' problem. I mean they couldn't have fucked up the adaptation more if they were actively trying to do it. And because they used Zemo, this basically cost us any chance of having one of Cap's biggest villains ever be adapted. And yes, Steve is out NOW, but that wasn't the case when this was made. Imagine if the Spider-Man movies were made in such a way that NONE of his iconic villains were able to be used. None of the Sinister Six from any variation at all. Hell, imagine a Batman movie where there was not even the most remote possibility of having 'The Joker' because they already used him in a Green Lantern movie and he was more like Killer Croc in that.

That's the power of letting all of the characters have a lot of control over their own story arcs. Marvel is the best at continuity and letting everyone have input. They all iteratively shape the movie along the way, and the reshoots after primary shooting don't just improve existing scenes, they also make the new movie version evolve out of the old one.
The BIG CITY TITLES were put in kind of as a joke, as Marvel had been criticized for making the titles too small in a previous movie. Now every time I see them I'm reminded the execs have a sense of humour.

At the end of the Iron Man v Cap fight when Tony flinches, because he thinks Steve is going for the kill is one of the most heartbreaking scenes of that movie.
Tony was very much going for the kill, so he expected Steve would do the same. In that moment, Steve took the high road and proved himself the better man.
@@Slays_Media yeah steve totally took the high road by lying to tony and was the better man for it huh. he was absolutely right to withhold that information from a teammate who he constantly told to trust him, and then broke his trust. absolutely stellar behavior.
It was good. Chadwick was a great choice and it definitely was a moment that proved he was the best choice. But there’s a good amount of dialogue and monologues that are impressive.
This is a perfect illustration of why I dislike trailers. You were genuinely surprised to see Black Panther and Spider-man, which is a feeling we were robbed of when they were revealed in trailers and press releases.
Actually, I MUCH preferred the reveal of Spider-Man in the trailer. It was the greatest trailer reveal I’ve ever experienced, when he suddenly appears. In the movie, it’s just like “Hi you’re Peter Parker? Spider-Boy, right? Hey come fight with me or whatever.” Very anticlimactic. It would have been much better if maybe he just said “I’ve got another recruit, I’m going to Queens” or whatever, just as a tease, and then we got that epic “Underoos” reveal, it would’ve been way cooler. But since we didn’t get that, I’m glad we have the trailer.
@@ParzivalTheThird I won't argue with that. The "underoos" reveal (unspoiled by trailers) would have been the single greatest moment in the MCU up until that point.

So... yeah, finding out that not only were his parents NOT killed in an accident, but that they were murdered by the guy standing right next to him. I'd say his reaction was entirely reasonable.

@@nebullae Tony did act irrationally by trying to kill a man for something he had no control over. It's totally in character for Tony to get overwhelmed by his trauma and I understand his reaction but that doesn't make it a rational decision or remotely close to justified. It's really sad when Tony sees his parents die. But what's truly sad for me is when he asks Bucky if he even remembered them and Bucky answers, "I remember all of them." Imagine remembering all of the people you murdered while Hydra had control of your mind.
Its especially sad when you remember that Howard Stark was involved with Captain America's unit in WW2 as well. Bucky and Howard were probably at least acquaintances. Imagine having no control as you watch your body brutally murder a man you know and respect, and his wife, to benefit the evil group that you both fought a war against.
I'm sorry you didn't include the moment when Cap asks Peter where he's from, and you can see how much Cap approves of the fact that Peter is a fellow New Yorker.
What's funny about Spider-man in "Civil War" is the fact that he's in Team Iron Man even though his way of seeing things is more in line with Cap's. When Tony meets Peter he says to Tony "when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you". That line made Tony think about it, because Peter is basically deffending the same principles Steve was while discussing the accods. I always saw that brief moment of Tony thinking about that line as him realising he's manipulating that kid into going against his own beliefs unknowingly.
@@georgezee5173 Exactly. Also I love that it's Peter akwardly fumbling through the concept of, "with great power comes great responsibility" in his own words. I really do like how we see Tony's character consistency. Thinking on, he only really developed a proper empathetic mindset during Iron Man 1, which happened during trauma. His dramatic overcorrections have been consistent as well, from Iron Man 1 where he ended a massive part of his company's production (weapons), and literally flew across the world to stop terrorists that America wouldn't, to Iron Man 3, where he blows up his entire fleet of suits for catharsis. I fully suspect that General Ross knew about Tony's psychological profile, and arranged for the woman with the photo to be backstage at his speech, knowing that Tony would dramatically overcorrect right into the accords that Ross wanted.
@@Kjf365 he supported having the heroes register with the government just because of who they are. That's awfully Hitler-ish. And cap is just as much of a coward. He knew who killed Tony's parents but didn't tell him because he was a coward and wanted to protect his friend.
The fact that tony went toe to toe with cap and Bucky kinda shows just how good of a fighter he is, cause honestly most people didn’t think he would have stood a chance, and he did better then lots of people thought

Lot of character development. Rogers, the good soldier, refuses to take orders. Stark, the rebel, wants to fall in line. Compare this to Stark in front of Congress in Iron Man 2.
I don’t disagree, I’m just seeing there’s a lot of character development that makes the rule breaker (Stark) want more rules and the rule follower (Rogers) wants to do not follow the rules. Both characters evolve to their Civil War positions because of the prior movie events in some ways going all the way back to both Iron Man, when Stark rejects the military, but starts associating with SHIELD and Rogers disobeying orders to rescue the captured soldiers.

After this movie, I considered the Captain America movies (Winter Soldier and Civil War) the aftermath of the Avengers movies. After Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy we realize The Infinity Stones (and Thanos) was the central conflict of the Avengers. Civil War involved the now large cast of characters so it feels like an Avengers movie, but the conflict wasn't about or caused by The Infinity Stones.
I find Tony’s reaction totally reasonable and real. That’s childish, stubborn and holding onto things because he just found out how his parents died, and the cause is standing right next to him. But it’s not stubborn or cap holding onto things, him literally willing to do anything, go against anyone, break however many laws that would make him a criminal just to save/protect his friend. But Tony needs to not be a child after seeing his mom get chocked and dad punched to death. Okay got it
Allow me a nerd moment: Wanda used Vision’s density altering powers against him, making him so heavy he crashed through the floors, though it looked like she was forcing him through said floors.
I rarely binge through a channel that makes 20+ min videos, with one exception being Last Week Tonight. I am loving this, and as a Marvel stan, it's always fun to see people's reactions watching these movies for the first time. Also, big respect for your willpower to avoid spoilers.
In the pantheon of Marvel Cinematic Villain's, Helmut Zemo is pretty forgotten, but he is the only Villain who won. Totally. He was just a man, no powers, and he took down The Avengers. Pretty wild.
Zemo. A true villain. He knew he was no match for the avengers so he destroyed them from within. And succeeded. Amazing character.
Absolutely underrated character and performance. Can't wait to see more from him.
'Amazing character'. Except for the part where they robbed him of literally every single part of him that was connected to his original character. They could have just as easily called him John Doe for as much connection as he had to the actual Zemo. I honestly think Zemo is the worst adaptation in the MCU, and I saw what they did to Mar-Vell
Father didn't die fighting Captain America. No real links to Cap himself outside of a generic hatred for the Avengers.

This is a perfect illustration of why I dislike trailers. You were genuinely surprised to see Black Panther and Spider-man, which is a feeling we were robbed of when they were revealed in trailers and press releases.
Yep. If I already know I want to watch a movie, I flatly refuse to watch its trailers.

I fully suspect that General Ross knew about Tony's psychological profile, and arranged for the woman with the photo to be backstage at his speech, knowing that Tony would dramatically overcorrect right into the accords that Ross wanted.

Lot of character development. Rogers, the good soldier, refuses to take orders. Stark, the rebel, wants to fall in line. Compare this to Stark in front of Congress in Iron Man 2.
Actually he refused to sign the Accords. That's not refusing an order. And a soldier has the duty (American ones, anyway) to refuse unlawful orders.
Yep. In the framework of D&D, the Lawful Good paladin has become untrusting of authority, and the Chaotic Good artificer has come to doubt his ability to make good choices.
@@Caseytify Not signing isn't all he did. Hence, War Machine's "congratulations" line.

I think the best part of this movie was they way that they made it possible to sympathise with both sides. Simply brilliant writing and acting by all concerned.
Peggy's quote that Sharon used at the funeral was actually word for word a Captain America quote from the comics.
A quote he said to Spiderman. It's a shame they didn't have the same relationship they share in the comics. Still pretty salty about it.
Not word for word, it was a paraphrasing of a Mark Twain quote. Unfortunately how they did it in the movie, made it lose a lot of its power
@@240Ldemon I agree. I was happy to see a nod to that speech (which is maybe the BEST speech I've read in comics), but it was abbreviated from the comic, and not nearly as inspiring.
It's a dangerous quote when said to the wrong person in the wrong situation. I know people who always believe they know what's best, even when everyone around them can see things more clearly. The whole universe told Thanos to move and he said "No. You move."
@@CandleLight129 That is a fair point, but if you really look at any inspirational quotes, I expect that same criticism would apply to most of them. The devil is always in the details. RIP Chadwick.
IMHO, the MCU really hit it's stride with Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America The Winter Solider.
After GotG and Ant-Man, they gained so much more confidence in trying out more unique stuff in Phase 3. They allowed James Gunn, Ryan Coogler, Taika Waititi and Jon Watts have full control over the type of tone they wanted in their respective films and being more risky in their shift in styles, instead of playing it safe like Thor 2 or Age of Ultron did.

As CinemaWins said this movie jumps a round a lot so big title cards informs us of a new chapter. We can reset and know this is a different part. It works really well imo.

Cap and Black Widow both found out Hydra killed Tony's parents in "CA: The Winter Soldier". Dr. Zola (the computer brain) told them. For whatever reason they decided not to tell Tony. Cap didn't know Bucky was "the weapon" Hydra used, til this movie.
It blows me away how many people think Cap is a jerk for keeping that info secret from Tony. They are friends. If I learned that my friends parents, who he thought died in an accident, were instead brutally murdered, I'm not sure I'd share that detail with them either. It seems cruel. Especially since by that point Hydra is already public, and they are going to be taking them down anyways.
