@@chrisstephens4079 Oh well let's not talk about your eyes then, woof. There is litterally nothing that gives 'romantic' or 'sexual attraction' vibe between them in this movie. Like, not a single hint. Also people with no game usually don't know how to read the room. Imagine not being able to read the room, except the room is full of people acting specifically for you to read it, like a movie for example.
Fun Fact: There's a comic book series where Spider-Man loses his spider sense so he goes to Shang-Chi to learn his way of martial arts to compensate for the loss. He ends up combining his own combat style with Shang-Chi's martial arts and creates the Way of the Spider.
Amusingly, although that storyline was ten years ago it came up again earlier this year in the first issue of Shang-Chi's 2021 series... albeit in the form of Spidey admitting that he stopped practicing pretty much as soon as the spider-sense was back.

The difference between the birth of a hero and a villain is subtle. Both have a horriffic, life-changing experience. The Villains want everybody to suffer the way they did, the heroes want nobody to suffer the way they did.
Which is what makes Wenwu's arc so sad. For once he wasn't using his power for suffering, he really was trying to save that which he loved the most in this world. In his mind, his wife made him good and he wanted that back. He wanted to undo his failure so badly. Wanted to undo her dying for his sins. Which is what made him vulnerable.

The pauses you mentioned might be because Tony Leung (Wenwu) acts a lot with his eyes. On a rewatch, you can see so many moments that show he does truly care for his family -- he just doesn't know how to be a good father.
This is exactly the actor's own take too! Albeit he ALSO said in a different interview there was definitely some misogyny (specifically 'valuing male over female') when it came to the kids.

I actually and absolutely loved Wenwu as a villain. It was so deep and layered it was easy to empathize with him.
Surprised you werent feeling the acting in that scene near the end. My wife and I still talk about how great the emotion was conveyed purely through Tony Leung’s acting in that scene
100% maybe it's because of the pauses but those were intentional and it was what sold the scene to me.
I think its a modern acting thing. Modern acting in dramatic sequences is a lot of "over-acting". Where Tony Leung shines the most is the subtle-ness. He doesn't outright cry. Instead his eyes glisten a little holding back tears. He slowly frowns in scenes, and then when he notices himself frowning, he quickly flips it into furled brows and an angry face. This in comparison to the intense screaming that we see in modern acting like Elizabeth Olson's Wanda screaming when she feels Vision's death, or Tom Holland's Peter Parker when Aunt May dies.

this movie has some of the best fight scenes in Marvel. a lot of respect paid to the Jakie style of fight chorography. no wonder when i dug into it a bit, there are a lot of the guys worked with him
Not only are the fights well choreographed, they're also shot fairly simply, fairly wide and they're consistent in physical continuity. None of that too close, too fast and too shaky to comprehend fight stuff here. It's beautiful. So much effort put in all-around.
The choreography was done by Brad Allen who sadly passed away recently he was a legend in Hollywood for creating fight scenes watch him versus Jackie Chan one of the best fights in a movie I've ever seen The speed is crazy

What I love about Ta Lo is that the animals are all based on Chinese mythical creatures. Those "Ninetails" (along with the Pokemon Ninetails) were inspired by mythical foxes in various East Asian mythologies. The lion looks like the guardian lion statues that guard both sides of a doorway to a Chinese temple. And Morris is a hundun, a faceless winged creature born from the chaos of the universe.
As a Marvel fan and a longtime fan of kung fu movies, this one was a fun ride.
Yes they felt like creatures from Chinese mythology, I hoped there were based on some real Chinese mythology I'm glad they were.

there were also so many great moments that highlighed lesser-known aspects of chinese culture, like the burning of incense at the altar of a deceased family member. the asian creatives behind the production of this movie really contributed a lot to make shang-chi feel real and respectful, and i'm glad marvel studios made this happen.

There was a One Shot (short film) called All Hail the King showing Trevor in prison and getting captured by a Ten Rings agent who revealed there was a real mandarin. It’s on Disney Plus
I love the funky music Brian Tyler did for that one-shot.
Things I love about this movie:
Shang-Chi and Katy are not forced into a relationship, they ARE just friends.
Wenwu is such an interesting villain(and thank GOD they fixed that crappy bit of "Iron Man 3", where Trevor, then Killian was supposedly the Mandarin. That was the worst(and consistent with Shane Black's bad creative choices("THE Predator").
Master Khan is an Iron Fist villain and is listed among Wenwu's different names.
Fun Facts/answers: The livestreamer on the bus was in "Spider-Man:Homecoming". He's the guy who yells "Okay Spider-Man! Do a flip!"during the opening montage.
The big guy fighting Wong is Blonsky/Abomination from "the Incredible Hulk"(only mutated now to resemble his comic version).
Shang-Chi is actually the child of another villain in the comics(Fu Manchu), but the character Fu himself is a bit of a racist stereotype, so it was good they changed that.
Wenwu had disbanded the Ten Rings when he gave up his own, thats why there were no guards. He had tried to live a normal life, but the Iron Gang came after him anyway.
For what it's worth, I believe Shane Black has claimed that he made (some of) those choices specifically because he wasn't allowed to use a 'comics-accurate' Mandarin. Additionally, Wenwu was originally announced as the Mandarin, but the writer/director figured that no one would call him that to his face, and when they decided on a personal name the actor (who neither knew nor cared who the Mandarin was) got so attached to it that they agreed to drop "The Mandarin" altogether.
@William Dean I didn't think about that before, but even if she did consider that she knew that she'd be no better than her husband if she killed them. There's no undoing that.
Nah, not vibing with Iron Man 3 slander. Get some perspective, maybe watch a movie outside of the MCU once or twice and get back to it. It's the best Iron Man by far.

Yeah, there were a few shorts, but I don't remember if any of the other ones really matter for any later films.
@@Lucifronz None if the others were really required viewing. “The Consultant” ties up a plot hole from Incredible Hulk, but if someone doesn’t remember it/it wasn’t bothering them, they can skip it. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer” is fun but inessential. “Item 47” is kind of a test for the Agents of SHIELD concept, and same for “Agent Carter” and her show. But I distinctly remember that “All Hail the King” was the one with the most potential impact on future films, once they ultimately decided what they wanted to do with the Mandarin.

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” if you want to see more of the cable and wire stunts that was in Shang Chi! It’s a beautiful movie and just scratches the surface of the great wire work and stunts that has been in Asian cinema for decades!
Yay, I thought of that a lot when watching the fight scenes.
Crouching was made 21 years ago and it's head and shoulder above anything Shang-Chi offered, on every level.

And, more to the point, something "actually based on China", instead of this thing, which while classic MCU, was basically based on the entirely made up nonsense of the earlier Fu Manchu. Basically, its, "fake Chinese legends, because we couldn't be bothered to actually talk to any Chinese people before writing it." lol
IF you end up watching "Crouching Dragon" or "Hero", I would also implore you to also watch "Kung Fu Hustle". The first two movies can be described as beautiful Chinese stories told beautifully and Kung Fu Hustle is a beautiful story told by your cool black sheep uncle (plus includes bonus familiar face from Shang Chi).
Wenwu is probably one of my top 3 favorite antagonists in the MCU... An ancient warlord making a massive power grab makes a lot of sense... although I wonder why he didn't rule the world... Reforms, honestly becomes a good person (for a while)... You can't really blame him for going so agro when Ying Li is killed. Did he react poorly? Yes, but he spent centuries, with nothing able to harm him, he gives it up, and loses his wife, presumably the only romantic love of his life, or atleast the most important one. Picking the rings back up and relentlessly pursuing revenge/trying to get his wife back, makes sense. Like Vulture, he doesn't need to rule the universe or destory Tony Stark, he just wants his wife back.

"Why didnt they do that with his dad" His Dad used the rings and they only glowed blue-ish/purple-ish but when Shang-Chi used them they had a different color so they probably had a different energy structure too. His Mother changed the color of the rings as well but back then nobody was monitoring stuff like this throughout the world so it went unnoticed. I guess the change of Ownership and change of energy (lets call it that for now) activated the beacon again and Wong noticed it just then when the finaly fight in Ta Lo happened
It definitely has something to do with the connection to the heart of the dragon.
Could be due to the boost in power output when he did his finishing move, or maybe it only started sending out that beacon when the rings detected that they were moved off Earth.

I kinda read it as they were always doing that? Yknow, you don't necessarly notice it, also 1000 years isn't that long (not to say, a fraction of a second) in the scale of the universe, that would mean something has been preparing and/or coming for a very long time.
Best moment (well, for me anyway): Trevor's Planet Of The Apes monologue. How he gets to be so hilarious and profound at the same time... Sir Ben Kingsley has not done nearly enough comedy in his career.

So, the scene where Aunt Nan opens Shang Chi's fist is a reference to the idea that in martial arts that there are two basic combat philosophies. First you have the "Hard" styles which rare the ones which emphasize outer strength like literal physical strength styles such as Karate, Boxing, Muay Thai and so forth hard styles are referred to as "Closed fist". Then there are the "soft" styles which emphasize inner strength such as willpower and tend to be more about stopping your for by using his own energy against him these styles are more like Aikido or Tai Chi and are sometimes called "open hand."
you can only really appreciate the casting in this if you grew up with hongkong action movies... Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are absolute legends! and kinda funny that this is Leungs first non-chinese/hongkong movie considering how long he is in the business!
also all the animals in Ta Lo are based on chinese mythologic creatures. The Stunt Coordinator was a long time member of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team....
overall Marvel has done an outstanding job to honor the culture and history of Hong Kong Action Cinema with this movie. (cue the haters!)

This was one of those rare movies where my expectations were super high going into it, and were then delivered!
Shang Chi is my personal 3rd favorite MCU film, just under Endgame and Civil War. I love love this movie. Wenwu is probably my favorite MCU villain, yes even over Thanos and Killmonger.
There were many times where I found myself in awe of how thematically beautiful it all was; the flashback with kid Shang Chi talking to his father, and he tells him "You can have the rings when you're ready", to then having Wenwu pass on the rings to Shang Chi, as he's about to die, looking at his son with remorse and regret, but also with love, essentially telling his son, "You're ready". And to have Shang Chi's theme music be a mix of his dad's AND mom's theme is just *chef's kiss*.

The rings had nothing to do with him being manipulated. They just gave him enough power to break the gate open. They have nothing to do with the Dweller In Darkness.

I grew up watching & loving director Wong Kar-wai’s movies, and I associate my college years with Chungking Express! Tony Leung is FANTASTIC… I went to the cinema with no idea that he was going to be in this movie, and I nearly yelled at the screen like an idiot when Wenwu first appeared 🤣 Thank you for this reaction video!

Really cool reaction as always! I do have to disagree with your emphasis on seeing a romantic relationship between Shang-chi and Aquafina (probably just a question of point of view), I find it really neat when movies just have friends who are friends and stay friends, idk
Its so cliche I'm glad they avoided it. It also seems that the MCU in general is moving away from that and embracing men women friendships. Notably Hawkeye and Natasha. Also in Eternals one of the pairings seems genuinely like just close friends that care about each other but not romantic.
In the comics, Shang Chi trained Spider-Man in martial arts when he lost his spidey-sense for a bit. He's supposed to be one of the best hand-to-hand fighters in the entire Marvel universe. He was also based on Bruce Lee, which is a cool little detail.

Loved this movie so much. Saw it on a big screen after a 30 mile walk in the heat and then amazing IMAX-quality on Disney+ recently. We are getting a Disney+ show and a sequel already soon, such a fun addition to the MCU.

The Hulk-like monster Wong is fighting in the cage is The Abomination, Emil Blonsky, that's in one of the Hulk movies and a long-time adversary of The Hulk in the comics.
Chinese drama loves their pauses, so it's more on the directing part I assume based on the back and fort Chinese to Western cinematography and directing route they chose. (For me it's a treat to see since I love C-dramas, however cheesy they may be. But I can imagine it'd be jarring for anyone who's never dipped their toes in Asian media)
My favorite visual is when Shang-Chi is underwater and the guardian dragon's bubbles allow him to breath. I say this because it gets lost in the old translation but Shang-Chi's name means "Rising Breath". So the bubbles were rising to give him his breath. Chi means breath but it's also the chi people refer to as internal energy, or the energy of life.
I could see Shang-Chi in the movie theater (3D) and it blew my mind. From the action to the humor to the animation I was just amazed and upon rewatching it twice on Disney+ I can definitely say that it's my favorite marvel movie!
Edit: first of all I'm from Germany so 3D is pretty much always an option and why is there a troll in the comments???

I'm so glad that they finally made a movie about the REAL Mandarin and the REAL Ten Rings after giving us the fake version in Iron Man 3.
And I'm so glad that they brought back Trevor as the Mandarin's...hostage(?).
The Ten Rings are the longest running villains in yhe MCU.
They kidnapped Tony Stark and inadvertently created Iron Man in Iron Man 1.
They're the basis for AIM's charade with the fake Mandarin and Ten Rings in Iron Man 3.
They were among the potential buyers for the Yellowjacket battlesuit in Ant-Man.
Loved how the fight scenes were actually watchable. Not just quick cuts and so on
One of my favorite MCU films. I loved how it kept ramping up from street level to world ending. Those Rings are BADASS!
I LOOOVVE how they reworked the rings. In the comics they’re your basic magic rings you just point and they shoot stuff or do stuff. Here they’re used as these wildly powerful multi-use weapons. He can make shields, use them as whips, shoot them, so much cool stuff!
Love it when they make fight scenes not only exciting and well choreographed, but funny =)

My favorite Marvel movie to date! This movie made me cry so hard. At the end of the day, Wenwu just wanted his wife and the mother of his kids back. He just wanted his family whole again
Xu Wenwu was quite an empathetic villain and I did enjoy the development of his character, definitely one of the better Marvel antagonists we've gotten and a great three-dimensional character. One thing I noticed about Wenwu is that his motivation is very similar to another fantastic comic book villain, Mr Freeze (DC Comics), because Mr Freeze and Wenwu both are men at risk of losing their beloved wives, and are incredibly sympathetic three-dimensional characters, both tragic in their own unique ways, Wenwu, a man who's actions have poisoned his chances for a future with his wife and children and just wanted the chance to have that future back, and Mr Freeze, once a good husband who couldn't bear to watch his wife pass away and is now a victim to continuously to torture himself to death, all just to save her. One's a conqueror turned grief-filled father, and the other was a warm-hearted man turned cold-hearted widower.
I also like that stories with antagonists defined by their grief aren't just sympathetic, but represent such an important message - about learning to let go.
Wenwu couldn't let go, and obsessed over bringing back his wife at any cost. Which was also selfish in its own way. It wasn't about saving her - it was about satisfying his own need and inability to cope. And it cost him everything in the end. (He basically went the Anakin/Vader path)
His son Shang-Chi, on the other hand, chose to run away from the pain at first (and his father's obsession), but at the end of his arc in this story, chose to accept his mother's loss and his part in it, and learned to cope in the healthiest way - by adopting his mother's philosophy and fighting style. He honored her by learning from her instead of trying to selfishly bring her back in person.
*sympathize. 'Empathy' means that you know what their feeling because you've experienced it. Sympathy is when you haven't had their experiences, but you feel for them.

MCU Movie fact: The guy on the bus that is livestreaming, Klev, isn't a brand new character. He was the street vendor in Spider-Man: Homecoming that asked Spidey to "do a flip!" In 4 years he went from vending street food in Queens to being on a bus in San Francisco.
The scene with all the cars getting destroyed by the bus was all practical effects.
Saw some behind the scenes footage someone who lived there recorded, looked insane.
I loved Shang-Chi, outstanding movie, excellent blend of action, humor, and really poignant family drama. You feel bad for the villain and still want to see him get his jaw rocked. Perfect balance. The Ten Rings in the comics are actually jewelry style rings, turning them into iron rings the weapons was an inspired choice. They're ridiculously powerful in the comics even more powerful than in this film, so it will be interesting to see if they gain some of their comic powers or not.
One of the things that I hope further movies explore in the future is the fact that Shang-Chi is the DEADLIEST hand to hand combatant in the Marvel Universe. We're talking about a guy who learned every martial arts discipline and was literally trained every day from sunup to sundown in every single martial art known to man. In the comics, he's just a normal human being who has such a complete mastery over his body's movements that he can beat Black Panther, Spider-Man, Captain America and Wolverine in single combat. He's gone up against super-powered combatants and left them winded, limping, with broken bones or unconscous in 5 moves or less. He's also a member of MI6, the British Ministry of Intelligence, so he's basically an Asian James Bond.....without the misogyny of course because Shang is very polite and respectful to everyone. Even the ones who want to kill him....well, TRY to kill him....heheheheh!
The rings themselves aren't corrupting--the first line is about how Wenwu could have used them for good but didn't choose to. So the voice really wasn't related to whether or not he had them on. They were just why the Dweller was going after him.

Wenwu is the REAL Mandarin that Trevor was pretending to be in Iron Man 3 (and Aldrich Killian saying he was), And The Ten Rings are the group that kidnapped Tony in Iron Man 1 that held him captive in a cave. It was a big point of contention for comic book fans when we got that Trevor reveal in IM3, it's a big reason the movie isn't more well recieved...so this movie did a decent job of trying to fix that.

Watching the behind the scenes for this; the whole village of Ta Lo was actually built in Australia, that bamboo arena thing was real. Simu was amazing in his martial arts and acting, and I really loved the villain development in this one. Loved it!
That bus fight scene is cemented in my brain as an all-time favorite action scene.
This movie is so magical, it's ridiculous.
I cannot wait for the eventual sequel.
Also, the guy who directed this movie is directing the 5th Avengers movie. I can't wait for that as well.

I wasn't sure how Akwafina's humor would fit into the MCU, but wow, she was so great in this.
I don’t know if anyone else has commented this, but I believe this movie takes place during the Blip, hence why it Wang and not doctor strange. So it’s probably pre Hulk/Banner. Correct me if I’m wrong, please?
It took 20 years to bring Shang-Chi to the big screen.
I remember it was announced after Blade II and Spider-Man finished filming.
It was definitely worth the wait.

The joke is that he really is a legendary Shakespearean actor.
Simu Liu The actor who plays Shang-Chi was his own stuntman. And even tho there was a stunt double for him he did a lot his own stunts. Which makes it so much more believable when u don’t see as many cuts in the fight scenes.
I texted this to my friend as I was watching this movie, and I stand by it now. Katy is my favourite MCU character ever.
The moment where she sings Hotel California to one of the ninja's had me in stitches, and she was hilarious and awesome throught. I had no idea who Awkwafina was at all before this movie, but boy did I love her performance.
I've started to use this strategy to change the subject... when in doubt... "on a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair..."
awkwafina is a really good actress she does mostly supporting comedic roles (she played danny devito in the last jumanji) she also had really strong emotional roles you should definitely check out the farewell!!
That bit was the only thing i really didnt like in Shang-Chi
Such a great movie! Really what Phase 4 needed at the point it came out. Real block buster movie with heart.
And to me, Shawn is now the leading man in the MCU. He has what it takes at least. He has charisma, wit, and the heart that RDJ had playing Iron Man. I could see this launching a long line of Shang Chi movies. (This is assuming Chris Hemsworth takes more of a backseat, as he seems to be)

I have to admit, I fanboyed a little when Michelle Yeoh appeared. I had no idea she was in this move, and she is one of my favourite actresses of all time.
The martial arts that's very recognizable as wirework is an "intentional flaw" used to invoke the feeling of weightlessness, but moreso is a reference to a style of martial arts film made famous by the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." It's a style that invokes the "chi" and other more fantastical elements of the culture to wash away your sense of disbelief.

To me, Wenwu is a relatable character who has only good intentions. I was disappointed that Nat judged him so quickly and missed out on the nuance. I find him very sympathetic and the fact that he did destructive things in a misguided attempt at redemption is really sad
It's good that you didn't forget about the post credits scene, every time you see a Superhero movie check if there is one (or two) post credits scene

One of the problem i saw with this movie that you just kinda made more apparent
How is it that murder, assault, and violence wasn't okay for the father to teach Chang-Chi but it also wasn't okay for him not to teach his daughter (not saying that there weren't any like sexist overtones there from the father's part but like it could also be coming from a place of misguided love, in that maybe he just didn't want his daughter to go down the same path that he was taking his son down, like the man was in pain and morning his decisions clearly were not the best/and that's just a personal opinion/), also at the end there again like it's wrong when the father has a army of murder ninjas that go around terrorising and killing people for they're own benefit, but when the daughter has the group and makes it inclusive it's okay, or at least "not as bad," kinda comes across as it saying and everyone unintentionally agreeing that terrorist organizations are okay as long as they're inclusive...?! 🤷♀️ Idk
So with the next step in the MCU seemingly being Hawkeye, I really think it would be a better idea to go through Netflix's Daredevil first. Such a tremendous series and id argue a hole in what you've watched so far.
I'd argue Daredevil is totally skippable. I never liked it as a series, and felt it wasn't a good adaptation. It's also has nothing that contributes to the MCU at all, so isn't needed.
(Someone has probably mentioned this but) The Ten Rings (as an organisation) appeared in the very first MCU movie. They were the people who kidnapped Tony Stark in 'Iron Man'.

Natalie Wong from Doctor Strange was fighting with Abomination from Incredible Hulk movie. I think you missed it die the changes they have done to the character's physical appearance.
The Ten Rings organization is the same organization that kidnapped Tony in Afghanistan.
A sequel and spin-off to this movie are in the works. In the meantime, you should check out the soundtrack that the record label 88 Rising put together. It features songs from and inspired by this film.
And the backstory about Ta Lo that Shang-Chi and Xialing heard from their mom when they were kids is also in a children's book that's tied to this movie. It's called "Who Guards My Sleep?"
The fight scenes in this were amazing. It was like watching a Kung fu movie. I really hope Marvel redoes the Iron Fist series and does it properly with amazing fight choreography as they did here.

Having an antagonist whose motivations you can understand, even if you don't agree with them, is so much more compelling in a story. They make sense in a way so many traditional villains don't and that helps the whole story better.
Most antagonists have understandable motivations, if not agreeable. Most villainous villains are after things stemming from greed, a VERY common trait of humans.
I'm with you re: caring about characters and story rather than action (I tend to start playing with my phone during big action sequences), but I also agree that the action in this movie was really enjoyable to watch.
I’d have to kinda disagree with you about the emotional acting in this one. The emotion never rlly translated to me when it was Shang Chi having emotional moments but his dad??? Oh his dad had me feeling for him and rooting for his retribution. I even cried when he died bc even tho he finally realized that his grief was being used against him, and that he’d pushed away/abandoned his kids in the process, it was too late for him. Like, his life flashed before his eyes and he realized all he’d done wrong but he could no longer do anything (besides save his son) to right those wrongs.
Anyways it was basically Shaun and Katy who I couldn’t emotionally connect to and I think that’s just bc both don’t have much experience with emotional acting (they’re more comedic actors).
It's not Shaun/Shang-Chi's actor's first time doing dramas (although this IS his first movie role besides "Pacific Rim" extra), although the main one I'm aware of is a TV series called Blood and Water. Also, Katy's actress previously was a lead in The Farewell.

The creature that Wong was fighting/mentoring was the Abomination from the Edward Norton Hulk movie - he's been out of the MCU look for a while. Did you realize that Trevor is Sir Ben Kingsley/Gandhi?
His design is very different from the original and he's much less aggressive, so I wasn't even sure if it was actually meant to be him when I watched it. I was wondering if people had made a mistake beforehand in making that connection.
But it seems the most likely candidate, just a design tweak.
