Exactly. I always thought the MCU really started its best run with this movie (still my favourite MCU movie to this day, it's flawless). There are a couple of not so solid MCU movies after this one, but never as bad as Thor: The Dark World. I'm talking here of just a couple of installments against other 13 really enjoyable movies. That's a pretty great track record that it's even more impressive when you think it was achieved in just 5 years.
This movie was a game changer. I remember going to this movie Thursday night for the preview... I was so hype because I knew it would blow up that weekend and years later I STILL think it’s Marvels BEST solo film movie and best sequel. BTW watch Robert Redford in “All The Presidents Men” (1976) and “Three Days of the Condor” (1975) which both greatly informed the Russo brothers political thriller take on this film.
Winter Soldier is, to this day, my favorite MCU movie. Avengers Infinity War is a close second and Civil War gets the 3rd spot. You reached the golden age of the MCU.
The fun thing was that they timed the storyline in the Agents of SHIELD TV series so that the HYDRA story happened in the series in the same week as Winter Soldier came out.
It totally disrupted the story direction for the show as they were given short notice about the big reveal. The slow build was done and gone, now the showrunners were in "two-minute drills" mode to use a football idiom. The amount of brainstorming was astounding. Definitely worth seeing.
@@mmattson8947 lol don’t watch marvel things if you don’t want possible spoilers especially when they established that they followed the movie timelines. @@mmattson8947 I mean, they’re two interconnected stories in the same universe. So they technically spoil each other. As somebody who DID see winter soldier on opening weekend, it spoiled a big element of the show. You may have prioritized caring more about the movie (which I get) but both also had elements and secret identities that prevented each from totally spoiling the other.
In the comics, Sharon Carter is Cap's main love interest (he's had several, but it always comes back to her). That was the plan for the movies as well, but people loved Peggy Carter more than they had anticipated.
Dunno...hate her guts. Cap doesn't need a woman. Also, Atwell is dating Tom Cruise. I have no respect for her because of that. Scientologists are shitbags.
She's going to love the relationship stuff in the first season. for awhile. But how could it possibly be fit into the timeline. And how does it get on the viewing list?
I love the AOS show but it didn't show the organisation in a good light either in my opinion. There was a lot of double standards and hypocrisy that we as the viewers were expected to overlook because "SHIELD are the good guys."

"I know he is Captain America, but shouldn't his arm be shattered from that?" Remember, he lands on his shield that is made of Vibranium, which is a metal that has rather unique properties.
Yeah, it took a direct blow from Thor's hammer. It absorbs impact. Don't know if it has the same properties as Black Panther's suit, which absorbs blows then reflects the energy back.
Sonny Chiba quote. Though he says Ezekiel 25:17 the full quote doesn't exist in the Bible (maybe 6 or 7 words of it in that verse). It is however in Karate Chiba almost verbatim, also misattributed to Ezekiel.
The bald scientist with the glasses in the scene when they "wipe" Bucky is Ed Brubaker, the writer who co-created the Winter Soldier in the comics. (He wasn't involved in creating Bucky, but it was his idea to bring Bucky back from the dead as Winter Soldier.)
Genuine reactions to the Winter Solider’s identity are so fun to watch because they advertised it so hard in all the trailers and TV spots when it was coming out.
I only realized last week that Scarlet Johansen had the co-starring part in 'The Horse Whisperer' when she was 15 or 16 years old. It was directed and starred Robert Redford. It must have been pretty rad when they reunited in Winter Soldier.
Fun fact: The Russo brothers, who directed this movie, were producers and directors for the sitcom Community and Community cast members make cameos in the Russo MCU movies. Community also did a shout-out to the Elevator scene in its final season.
Wow, I had no idea. The Winter Soldier is like a combination of a superhero film and a spy thriller like James Bond, Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible. I’m surprised the Russo Brothers are great at doing comedy too.
Man that Winter Soldier theme is so good it’s unreal. One of THE best pieces of music ever composed for a comic book movie. Did you know the prolonged “scream” that makes up the first part of the theme, they took Bucky’s scream as he fell from the train in the first movie and distorted the hell outta it, really clever. That other sound though, the more shrill scream sound is honestly terrifying, like something out of a horror movie, sounds like it should be the theme for a super psychotic villain though, not a guy like Bucky who we’re all rooting for to get his memory back.
Well. Every last name ending in -son comes from a time when lastnames where the father's name with -son suffix. Ex. Wilson (Son of Will). That's why Thor's name is Thor Odinson and Odin's is Odin Borson.

Fun fact: the acrobatic goon from the opening boat scene is based on a (ridiculous) Marvel villain called Batroc the Leaper. His comic outfit is pink/purple and yellow, and the movie character's outfit shares the color scheme.
All credit to him as an athlete and performer. He was probably the perfect pick for this role. I tried to pick a simple description for the character. The actor was perfect and I would never describe him in real life as an acrobatic goon. I'd probably catch a swift boot to the head lol.
I love that guy. They got him back for Age of Ultron, too-Nick had him on the bridge of the helicarrier for the evacuation of that city. I was so tickled when he showed up again 🥰
9:41 Exactly my thoughts while watching thus movie, I feel like it was a new environment for Steve to work on, he didn't know who to trust besides himself. Also the fact that the villain is unknown is what makes it thrilling, he don't know who to chase and who to fight. This is why Ca:tws is one of Marvel's best.
This movie came out a few months after Edward Snowden's revelations about PRISM, but it was made well before then. It's also one of my 3 favorite MCU movies.
18:24 - Short-circuited the incendiary device Hydra put in her name tag pin thingy before Pierce could detonate it and give Fury an opening to kill him.
Another interesting point: You mentioned in the post-mortem having trouble picking out a specific person responsible for the villainy. That's also intentional, as the whole concept of Hydra is in their motto: "Cut off one head, two more shall take its place." Hydra has many heads of power.
Zola seemed more of a pushover assistant to Red Skull in the first movie. I like how they made him more malevolent and creepy in this movie and became a mastermind in Hydra’s continued development.
This one is still my favourite comic book movie in general to this day. I find it simply flawless, taking a very gritty take but embracing the comic book aspect (unlike Nolan Batman films). @@georgezee5173 While i understand what you're saying and agree, I'd respectfully contest that Nolan was only one in a long line of actors and directors giving their individual, unique, and creative take on that franchise. As far as Nolan, I think he did a pretty passably good job, considering...

The Winter Soldier moniker was a reference to the Cold War. In the comics, he’s an agent of Russia rather than Hydra (hence the big red star on his arm), and executed several clandestine missions/assassinations under their control from the time he was recovered after WWII to present day, up until he recovered his memories.
Hmmm, can't agree with you on this one. "Iron Man" is responsible for the existence of the MCU! It made people want more of these superhero movies, and defined the MCU movie formula for everything that came after it.

Yes, Feige in full control. Not having to please Ike Perlmutter.
@@ParkerLongbaugh Perlmutter and Loeb are idiots. Sorry, but that’s my take.
The MCU definitely hits its stride here and keeps flooring the accelerator. Great content ahead!
"I want Bucky to be fine too. Like... mentally"
We all do, sis. We all want him to be fine.
Winter Soldier is, to this day, my favorite MCU movie. Avengers Infinity War is a close second and Civil War gets the 3rd spot.
You reached the golden age of the MCU.
My favorite MCU movie too!
Great picks! Not in that order, but those are my top three as well.
Your top 3 is perfect.
Winter soldier is in my top 10, definitely not my favorite but it’s still good
What about Endgame?
The fun thing was that they timed the storyline in the Agents of SHIELD TV series so that the HYDRA story happened in the series in the same week as Winter Soldier came out.
And it changed the series forever. Still my favorite MCU series
It totally disrupted the story direction for the show as they were given short notice about the big reveal. The slow build was done and gone, now the showrunners were in "two-minute drills" mode to use a football idiom. The amount of brainstorming was astounding. Definitely worth seeing.
It was a horrible fact.
Anyone who didn't see the movie on opening weekend was unnecessarily spoiled about Hydra by AoS. I was furious at the TV show.
@@mmattson8947 lol don’t watch marvel things if you don’t want possible spoilers especially when they established that they followed the movie timelines.
Hydra didn’t appear until after the movie premiered so if you kept watching the show and didn’t watch the movie when they told you to go watch it with all the promos for the movie and the Nick in the car scene literally as a end cut scene then your fault really
Cool story, bro.
@@rotyler2177 nice comment broham, way to...do that?
Dunno...hate her guts. Cap doesn't need a woman. Also, Atwell is dating Tom Cruise. I have no respect for her because of that. Scientologists are shitbags.

Nat Less than a minute in: "How he lost his best friend."
Me: "ooooh yeah, this gonna be good!!!"
As amazing as infinity war and endgame are, this is my favorite Marvel movie. Winter soldier had the best story and best action scenes.
"I never really liked S.H.I.E.L.D. to begin with, to be honest."
AOS fans everywhere: *heavy breathing*
Yes, more Coulson, more awesomeness
She's going to love the relationship stuff in the first season. for awhile. But how could it possibly be fit into the timeline. And how does it get on the viewing list?
I love the AOS show but it didn't show the organisation in a good light either in my opinion. There was a lot of double standards and hypocrisy that we as the viewers were expected to overlook because "SHIELD are the good guys."
@@geoffreycahoon2410 The best way would of course be to watch Turn Turn Turn right after The Winter Soldier, but I guess that ship has sailed - unless she starts the show and binges the first season right now.
I just watched the episode that goes with this yesterday
This is honestly my favorite solo mcu film, i wish we got atleast another dark mcu film like this cause most ones nowadays are filled with too much jokes
That movie is directed by 2 brothers who never before made movies and now they are the best and loved MCU directors. They made more movies for MCU.
I mean, it wasn’t their FIRST movie. That was You, Me, and Dupree... which really is barely worth mentioning, but still.
@@Zakemaster i thought Welcome to Collinwood was their first?
@@smiggypaul apparently, not even THAT is first. They wrote, produced and directed some movie in 97 called Pieces. Who knew?

"I know he is Captain America, but shouldn't his arm be shattered from that?" Remember, he lands on his shield that is made of Vibranium, which is a metal that has rather unique properties.
Yeah, it took a direct blow from Thor's hammer. It absorbs impact. Don't know if it has the same properties as Black Panther's suit, which absorbs blows then reflects the energy back.
@@Caseytify im pretty sure the reflecting is just tech made by shuri, the shield and black panthers suit are both vibranium

The Bible quote on Nick Fury’s tombstone is the one from Pulp Fiction that his character always quotes
Sonny Chiba quote. Though he says Ezekiel 25:17 the full quote doesn't exist in the Bible (maybe 6 or 7 words of it in that verse). It is however in Karate Chiba almost verbatim, also misattributed to Ezekiel.
I think that is my favorite detail in this movie
That is a great detail, thanks!
“Then. I’m...with you. To the end of the line.” That makes me cry every time.
oof the "i knew him" is what gets me.
"Honestly all I can think about right now is Bucky" - same
Always
Fun fact: The Russo brothers, who directed this movie, were producers and directors for the sitcom Community and Community cast members make cameos in the Russo MCU movies. Community also did a shout-out to the Elevator scene in its final season.
I always wondered which elevator scene came first, Cap's or the Dean's.
Wow, I had no idea. The Winter Soldier is like a combination of a superhero film and a spy thriller like James Bond, Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible. I’m surprised the Russo Brothers are great at doing comedy too.
@@39Hundred Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Aquaman) also worked on Community in their first season. He famously did the first paintball episode.

Coulson's name is easy to remember if you think about how Thor called him "Son of Coul" !
Well. Every last name ending in -son comes from a time when lastnames where the father's name with -son suffix. Ex. Wilson (Son of Will). That's why Thor's name is Thor Odinson and Odin's is Odin Borson.
"Foxtrot is down. He's unresponsive. I need EMTs."
"Do we have a twenty on the shooter."
That exchange tells you everything you need to know. She said he was down. She never said he was _shot_.
one could argue their surveillance provided audio of the gun shots
are you implying that they knew it was going to happen? or are you impressed on their response time? lol. I like to think they werent hydra and they were always on standby to help Nick if he ever needed it.
@@steverogers6572 Shield knew he had been shot, because they are the ones who shot him.
well they operated on him.... he did die, BUT they used the same syringe for coulson they used on nick.. it stopped his heart.
This movie is very much an homage to the 1970's Robert Redford spy flick _Three Days of the Condor._ I highly recommend that one all on its own.
You don't suppose that's why they got him to play the bad guy in this? ;)

He's also going to feature in the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier series.
finally. This was the turning point for the MCU going from good to Great. Also Jenny Agutter is always amazing.
You also skipped over the computer guy who refused to launch the helicarriers even though he was certain he would die. Shout out to the little guys!

Revisiting these movies after seeing Endgame reminds me why I love Marvel so much. Everything is connected and wrapped with a bow. Amazing.
Funny how, when I read that sentence out aloud, it's with a german accent :D
Agents of Shield does a great job expanding on this!
Zola seemed more of a pushover assistant to Red Skull in the first movie. I like how they made him more malevolent and creepy in this movie and became a mastermind in Hydra’s continued development.
You should watch Peggy Carter’s series. 😃
And Agents of SHIELD.
Probably my favorite MCU film with Endgame and Infinity War as close seconds.
Anything with captain America is great for me
This one is still my favourite comic book movie in general to this day. I find it simply flawless, taking a very gritty take but embracing the comic book aspect (unlike Nolan Batman films). And on top of that it manages to work well as a stand alone film despite being part of a saga of a dozen installments.
Yup, and Civil War. We need more Captain America movies.
@@acdragonrider He's the highlight to me, yes. Where Loki turns into Capt in Thor 2, didn't make the movie much better than meh

I love how the film is explaining what's going on to the audience and you're STILL so confused LIKE GIRL THEY ARE TELLING YOU WHAT IS HAPPENING
