  • In this video, I share an overview of wild bolete mushroom identification using 2 common mushroom species from North Carolina and other parts of the Southeast.
First, I show how to ID the edible and good shaggy-stalked bolete (Aureoboletus betula). Aureoboletus betula is a great beginner mushroom because of its distinctive shaggy stem, tall stature, and a few other distinctive features. The stem has a very nice sour flavor and good texture when well-cooked, and they are very common with hardwoods like oak and beech.
Next, I show off an intensely bitter specimen of the ornate-stemmed bolete, Retiboletus ornatipes. This gorgeous yellow mushroom has a net-like texture on the surface of the stem. This netting is called reticulation, and it often runs all the way down the stem of Retiboletus ornatipes.
I also talk about boletes in general and how to recognize and research them for identification. For novice mushroom hunters, boletes can be daunting. Boletes are characterized by having spongy, tube-like fertile surfaces under their caps. There are exceptions of course, like the gilled boletes in the Phylloporus genus. The fungal family Boletaceae is worth exploring; many of them are good to eat, and many more are remarkably beautiful and unusual.

I found an ornitripes on a little trail by my house almost a year ago and now I've been full on daily mushroom studying ever since, I love this shroom. They get huge by me, I find some that are 7 inches across the cap!

Hi Anna, George here. Here being Steamboat Springs Colorado for a few weeks. Anna, you have a gorgeous glow about you. You made me smile and chuckle a bit when you said full of worms and "future flies" If I may, I will use that term too. Thanks for yet another great video. : )

Thanks for all of your videos! ❤ I came from Russia to NC, Raleigh and just started picking mushrooms here. Mushroom gathering is very common in Russia, we have a lot of forests 😀 I wanted to ask for advice - do you do tours, or could you suggest some local groups on Meetup or Facebook where people can gather mushrooms together, could show us what is worth eating and what is not? Thank you!

Hi Anna. Any chance the mushroom you are calling ornatapes is aureoboletus auriflammeus? It is staining your fingers yellow.

No, Aureoboletus auriflammeus is a smaller mushroom with more of a vertically streaked stem than R. ornatipes. The yellow stain is common with both. Also, the shades of yellow on the mushroom are different, in addition to the texture. Anyway all the Aureoboletus species tend to be more slender than other bolete genera

Bolete mushrooms love to stain your fingers. I found one just today that did the same

You make me nervous when you’re handling all these mushrooms and then go ahead and rub your itchy eyelid with your finger... I'm sure it’s fine.
Also, you have a similar je nais c’est quoi as another cool UA-cam host named ‘Pesos Hank’ or at least that’s his channel name.
He presents in a similar way or has a similar energy, not sure what it is. He’s enthusiastic about tornadoes which I guess at times can be shaped like mushrooms... I digress.
    Thanks for making videos eh.
