  • In this video, I share a collection of a large, purple bolete-type mushroom called Tylopilus williamsii. This find is special because Tylopilus williamsii usually shows up in places like Mexico and Texas - not North Carolina. I show how to identify Tylopilus williamsii and talk about 3 other common Tylopilus species:
    1. Violet-gray bolete, Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus
    2. Bitter bolete, Tylopilus felleus
    3. Burnt-orange bolete, Tylopilus balloui
I also show how to identify the golden reishi (Ganoderma curtisii), a common wood decomposer and discuss best practices for gathering and documenting rare mushrooms.

My bug bit me right out my garage door, a giant mushroomy growth at the base of an oak tree. Hen of the woods. Bingo! I was hooked.

Hi Anna, if you still have some of Tylopilus mushrooms you can try drying them to see if the bitterness goes away. I am from Belarus originally and some people claim that drying Tylopilus can remove bitterness. Cooking the mushroom is known to increase the bitterness by a lot and AFAIK even if you tolerate bitterness and eat the mushroom it will likely upset your stomach.

I’ll try that, I have never even attempted to preserve a bitter bolete so it’s definitely worth a try!

We have found Tylopilus balloui once here in Eastern Pennsylvania. Beautiful color.

I love it! The first time I found pins I thought someone had blown up a construction cone into little bits

I won't forget the disappointment of thinking I found a huge patch of porcini for the first time and upon further research, became acquainted with Tylopilus. Excellent video! 🤘😁🍄

@@annamchugh5381 That would pluckin' suck! Thankfully, mine didn't make it into any dish but I can imagine my total outrage being on par with the legendary news reporter who was reporting on the death of Chris Woods at Augusta High School... obscure but worth the look-up!
