Spent a better part of my childhood playing MapleStory. So many nice memories made, but at the same time, a lot of darkness came with it. The addiction and the constant grind and predatory cash shop's weapon and gear upgrades dragged me down a lot. I tried to be F2P for the most part, but overall, it was too much and I had to quit for good for my mental sake.
However, few things MapleStory does really well is the art, world design, sound design, OST music, characters, and the vast array of classes you can make. I still occasionally listen to Maple's music. I would love if MS became a Nintendo Switch game or some singleplayer experience on console.

Play on the reboot server. That’s pretty much a single player experience there’s 0 p2w. It’s still Grindy but you can play at your own pace. That server brought back my love for maple so maybe jt could for you too!
Same, a lot of “bittersweet” memories. There will never be another Maplestory. It truly was one of the first and best social video games. Probably why i ended up not having too many friends irl but i was okay with that since MS was kind of my childhood 😂
I still play this daily. Just as fun as ever before. It’s just so uniquely identifiable and nothing comes close to the feel and charm it has over everything else.
I quit in 2015 after playing since 2007. Came back to a private server on v62 during the beginning of COVID (Maple Legends). Tried playing retail and even tried reboot but it wasn't the same anymore. Private server was much more enjoyable with almost stock gameplay with just 2x exp and 1x meso. They have a very robust community and made me feel like I was playing on a very very empty server back in 2009 era. Got to like LVL 102 on priest and then quit again cause I couldn't get with the grind again. Stopped playing basically most games now but this is very nostalgic and I love it.
Is it me or does the mobile game have ZERO item drops? I remember back in 2006 it was like, you find ore, wood swords, stuff like that. And I’m playing mobile but all I find is just coins is ALL.
The new maplestory is stupid. No group activies until late game. Its like playing a solo game. Classic maple is always going to be the enjoyable maplestory. Rewarding and community interation which will never come back in the current maplestory. Nexon refuses to release a classic world for people to enjoy and its against game rules to bring it up in a thread. It shows people bring it up a lot. They are just lazy ass' that want to stick with their pay to win shit game. I can't wait for the day Nexon goes out of business of their maplestory shuts down for good like their maplestory 2 one did. Also that shows how much of a fail their ideas are. Yes im salty about it lol.
I agree, even I'm thinking maplestory should shut down too from seeing how this mmorpg game has been out for way too long.
I played this game way back then in 2005. Just started playing again on reboot for the past year or so mainly for the nostalgia. It's quite lonely tho lol. I was in a guild called Deception and damn, what great memories. I have 2.2k legion and have maybe spoken to 3 ppl at max with almost 400 hours played. Still a fun game, just wish the community was a lot friendlier. -Joey from Deception/ Windia

maplestory has its problems. It's a highly monetized game with a ton of pay-to-win, and in the non-pay-to-win server, Nexon tends to make decisions that players don't want frequently (getting rid of items and progression tools, making the game harder for players).
It's still my favorite MMO of all time despite loving ESO, but lately ESO have been kinda meh to me due to the changes in recent patches. I always go back to maplestory, even despite the problems it has because there's just no other game experience like it.
I recommend playing in the Reboot world to avoid the pay-to-win aspects. Early on, getting alternative characters to level 120 is important due to a mechanic called "Legion," which gives you bonuses based on the other characters in your account, plus "link skills," which are passive skills alt characters give to your main character (you can move these skills to other characters once an hour or so, so you can use them wherever if you're spending time on a character). Best ones to get are Exp Booster ones, those are Mercedes (bonus exp), Aran (increases exp from the orbs that appear when you're grinding exp from mobs), and Evan (increases the duration of exp runes), then anything that increases your damage, crit rate, and crit damage. That's Adele, Phantom, Demon Slayer, Kanna, Ark, Illium, Lara, Phantom, Hoyoung, and a few others.
It's not NECESSARY. I played my reboot account fresh without any links or legion when it first came out. But it lets you experience a number of classes that you might like the playstyles of, and it makes characters you play later feel stronger.
NOTE: for people who like to play end game, it's VERY HARD to get the best gear, it's a HUGE grind! Also, the game used to be very social but they changed it to solo play and there's barely anything to do with a team! Back in the days you used to do PQ's (party quests) but they focused the entire game on solo power leveling to the end game. All they want to see is you diving in the cash shop at the end game! In my opinion they took all the fun out of it, it's not worth playing anymore. Although the skills are very cool, the game overall has become very lame! Just because EVERYTHING IS A HUGE GRIND! There's nothing else to it anymore. You don't really touch any of the quests because it's mostly a waste of time since they made grinding way to easy!
Hey man i need some tips, i did play the real MS when i was 10 but switched to Private servers. enjoyed it alot but hated the wipes and shutdowns ofc. Thinking to start the real MS again and just play. How do you mean the leveling the grind etc is easier now?
@@Grandpasaab you can level to 200 in about a week casually playing but the game dosent start till 200 arcane river is still super early. many people hit 250 in 2 months, progression past 250 is quite hard honestly.
@@Grandpasaabyou can get 200 in 2 day when there are burning event, if not, you prolly need to spend 1-2 weeks until 200, but, when your reach 200 the game JUST START, from 200-210 prolly spend 2 weeks, then 200-215 2 weeks, then 215-220 3 weeks, 220+ 3 days per level. All of this playing CASUAL, if you tryhard, maybe less time

@@Grandpasaab aangezien jij Nederlands bent is je enige optie de Reboot server. Ze hebben het voor Nederland en België verboden gemaakt om te kunnen ruilen met elkaar en kan je dus moeilijk aan je spullen komen. Reboot is de server waar je dus voornamelijk alleen speelt en eigenlijk alleen maar aan het grinden bent. Als je gaat spelen dan raad ik je aan om een guild te zoeken waar je geholpen kan worden met boss runs om op die manier toch je gear etc. te kunnen krijgen wanneer je 200+ bereikt. Heb je geen guild, dan kan het heel lang duren om verder te raken in het spel. Er is een systeem in het spel gekomen genaamd "Legion" en daarmee speel je extra stats mee vrij. Dit kost een hoop tijd want je moet een bepaalde Legion rank behalen om het te kunnen upgraden. Je Legion level gaat omhoog door zoveel mogelijk characters te maken en te levelen. 1 Legion punt per level en voor de end game mag je wel naar de 6k toe werken. Dat betekent dat je zo'n 40 characters naar level 140 moet brengen of wat minder characters naar bijvoorbeeld 200. Alle characters geven ook link skills vanaf level 70, hiermee kan je je main character boosten zodat je minder Legion nodig bent, net als met upgrades op je gear, wapen en accessoires. Ik speel nu zelf op level 219 en heb ondertussen 20 characters gemaakt om mijn Legion een boost te geven. Die staat nu op 2500 ongeveer en geeft wel een redelijke boost samen met mijn link skills maar het is nog lang niet genoeg! Dus zoek jezelf een guild is mijn beste tip, vraag om hulp want anders duurt het heel lang voor je zelf de bosses aan kunt die dus de gear en mesos opleveren die je nodig bent. Als je ondertussen al begonnen bent dan zou je een VV kunnen sturen naar mij 'CriticalDK' en dan wil ik je wel wat proberen te helpen
I used to play this game non stop from 2009, its not just nostalgia that makes me still fond of this game. Back then my favorite part was the community of cool players just chilling in big towns. It makes you wonder where the OGs are at now.

I love Maplestory. I have so many characters. My three favorite are Evan the Dragon mage, you have a dragon partner, The Beast Master, and a actual Dragon class inwhich I forgot what it was called. I haven't played in a while due to all the bots but when I go back, I always enjoy it. Wish it was on console or playable on the steam deck.
Kaiser is the class that you turn into a dragon. Beast Tamer. Evan. Kanna is really fun too. My characters are on the NA Elysium server. Highest lvl one currently is my Kaiser at 160. And Kanna is 136.
kaiser and evan are my most favorite classes too, hell yeah

Videos like this bring up so much more than just nostalgia, but the memories attached with it. Whether it's pre big bang, to post, to the friends made, the PQ's, grinding for Icy's and Ilbi's, to rolling a perfect Sauna Robe, to tutorial island and the damn Orange Mushroom Cap taking ages to kill, childhood / early teens MMORPG's just hit different.
From Maplestory to Fly For Fun, to Old School Runescape, to Rappelz, Grand Chase, Elsword, oh man, a wave of memories just came rushing in lol.
Mini trip down memory lane aside, stellar video Ghost! Truly times were so much simpler back then, an understatement at best!

Before this video even play I just want to acknowledge the childhood nostalgia coma I'm about to get put into. So many fond memories being my first MMO teaching me about classes and roles. Broo this game is amazing i played it 10 years ago when players where less op and the social aspect was amazing specially the pqs. Now the game has become less social since you can solo things easier 10 years later but nonetheless the game is a gem even if I’ll always miss the good ol days. I used to main a shadower and my second was a buccaneer for the super saiyan transformation that they took out.
the game is less social bc the endgame ppl are older and guilds all use discord now. talking to random ppl and nostalgia tripping exists in the all chat but everyone knows those ppl quit in a week

Maplestory is awesome! Chibi art style. EVEN MORE badass cutscenes/story. It used to be a huge pain in the ass (tear your hair out) grind-fest. But now it’s got a bunch of story and missions for lore lovers, it’s got tons of regions, and enemies (SUPER diverse) for those sweaty META min/max players. It offers something for for everyone.
MapleStory isn't the same as 2003-2010 unfortunately. The golden era was 2004-2008. MapleRoyals is a good private server and very popular v62 / v83 server, but it's still not 2003-2010 times anymore.
I gravitate towards 'mage' types in RPG games too 😂 I feel like they're the best for my personal play style. Which is more 'slower' than someone who might be like a barbarian or warrior type, that might want to quickly be head first into a battle or clear a stage. I like exploring more, and finishing all the quest to unlock xyz most of the time. I also like the thief types too, for speedy movement, especially in this game. I haven't played in years, since mid 2000's, but saw that they now have a mobile version too! Which I thought was cool. Wish I remembered my login for the pc one. I remembered I was ice/lightning mage, as opposed to fire/poison. Idk if they still have that or if they changed the whole system. I saw that they have new classes and stuff, which I think is a great idea to get more people and add on more story or playstyles for people that want to try something new. Cool! 😇
I was a beta player (still have mark of the beta), and just picked it up again after a LONG break. I don’t play nearly as much, but there’s just something charming about the game that doesn’t fade

If you enjoy grinding (and yes I know the nexon has taken steps so there grind does not suck as much) then I think this game is at least worth a try.

Idk, this vid didnt really explain about the title so in short, for the nostalgia people, dont play because you barely will recognize anything you knew before other than the maps and some mobs you will pass within the first 1hr of gameplay everything past that is new stuff u dont know about, and at that point wheres the nostalgia? for new players, if there are any lol, there are a lot of better options.. this game changed too much from party stuff to solo base. 80-90% of the game is single player no brain 2D field grind. If you like that go for it.
Maplestory was fun during the early days but now it's not worth playing as alot of my friends quit and it's a solo game now

MapleStory is a good game, but todays MapleStory will never revive any of the old social aspect and party gameplay that everyone once enjoyed.
If you are looking to get into MapleStory, i highly suggest Private Servers. Particularly MapleRoyals and MapleLegends
I still don’t understand how to follow the start of the adventure like it’s very first time that I’m playing this type of mmo and I feel lost cause of how the game works but also how the story works but especially how to fight and survive because I’m doing everything to survive but mobs always kill me too fast 😭

This game really take a toll of me,the money i spent on this game probably can bought a car and maybe a low cost house lost count already.
Became a boring single-player game, its not like the old one, where you had to make pqs to level up faster. now its just griding alone.
I'm only mentioning this because it's the kind of mistake I would make...

I wish there was a game just like this. I used to play maple daily for like 8 years as a kid, but over time it got too many classes, similar classes, and over powered moves. All the 5th jobs look the same

Yeah the main issue is just that like, back in the day it was a lot easier because MS was how you talked to people. A lot of people just sorta used it as a chatroom, so you could go to Henesys, find like 50 people who were talkative, and make friends that way. Now the content is more spread out and focused on 200+, there's a sense that you're always doing something, you're never just sorta hanging out, and the community's a lot smaller in general, particularly outside of Reboot. So for the first 100 levels or so it's entirely possible that you don't run into anyone. At 101+ you can join a guild, join their discord, and talk to people that way, but that still leaves the first 100 levels or so where you're pretty isolated, which for a new player will actually take a while.
I will say though that it's a lot easier to play without spending money. Back in the day there was definitely a sense that like, unless you had a distinct look, people wouldn't really pay attention to you. Which I mean does make sense, if someone's gonna harass or try and scam you, they're probably just gonna make a mule for it so you can't out them, and they're probably not gonna spend money on that endeavor, but it still kinda sucked for like, young kids.
@@NotAnElk Yeah Maplestory launched globally at a time when online chats like Aim and MySpace were getting popular which was the perfect timing for this game. Since hanging out with online players was popular, the majority of people never got tired playing the game since it was always stays fresh. Now in these days most areas that use to be popular hang out spots are not reduced to barren wastelands where people are there to afk. 😔

Let's be real. We were all little kids when we played it. And those who play it today are mostly mainly people in their mid 20s. Not that there's anything wrong with playing it as an adult.
I played this game back when there was just two servers, scania and bera. It took me at least a month to make it to level 45 and he got there in an hour hahaha

Old and outdated mmorpg game that runs like crap from seeing the times this game wouldn't stop crashing on me before.
Remember this game is heavily and I mean heavily paid to win game. Don't start playing if are not willing to invest money or to spend lots of time doing repetitive tasks to make it up for not giving them money. Because they sure will make u feel the difference.

Lel I remember the Good Ol times when we were constantly fighting Guild Vs Guild and hating eachother. And stealing wives and getting married In Game. There was alot of drama and that made the game so addicting. I think now it changed so no one talks its kinda boring no ?

Maplestory is a korean mmo so expect to have to grind a bit but its not as bad as people make it seem. You level at a decent pace and they keep implementing better exp rates. Party play is more of an endgame thing but thats like every mmo these days. Yes the grind is long but if your playing mmos then you should be used to this. If you are new to mmos then what does time matter if you are having fun.
Classic maple story was lit. I remember this from when I was like 19. But they changed it way too much, way more complicated than it used to be, removal of things that made it special, so it kind of sucks now.
The sheer amount of classes always brings me back 49!

Currently if you play on reboot servers i would recommend at atlest try it for story
About grind you will feal it around lvl 150 on reboot
If there is ignition event you can get to lvl 200ish in no time
If you ever pick up this game again I highly recommend evan if you like mages

played from October of 2005 to 2020, this game never going to be the same. happy to see new ppl try this game.
MapleStory isn't the same. Back in the day the grind is harder, Maps were huge (one part of MapleStory i love was the maps), feels like it cut down a lot. Way easier to level and such. I recently installed MS just to see what's going on i was okay with it
I remember grinding for weeks with my I/L mage on green mushrooms to get a pan lid. I think once they introduced wayyyy to many other worlds, it became so diluted. Chilling in the FM with all your other guild members, dying on the ship because you afk'd outside and Balrog killed you, PQs...and getting into a party just because you had a track...it was all the perfect thing for me growing up.
It just doesn't feel the same...there is way too much going on, you start out leveling up insanely fast, your skills are so crazy. I miss the simplicity where it took me 3 days to get from level 34 to 35, only to have my mage get about 30 more damage per bolt.
If there are old school players like me who hate the new MS, there are quite a few private severs who only go up to v.83, pre big bang, which IMO where MS died for me.
