2003 mplestory was the best time of my life. Slime tree, sleepywood, orbis boat and Balrog. I hope the people I met in that era are alive and well in 2024.
As someone playing since 07 across various servers (SEA, EU and USA) , I’d say global maplestory might be in the best place considering now we finally get our own updates instead of a delayed copy paste of what the Korean players get It’s not perfect but it has been a fun experience
Not much has changed in the MMO genre. But it is the hardest game to make in the gaming industry so naturally it'll take a very long time until a "good" new MMO comes around.
tell me about it, i been waiting for new MMORPG since FFXIV, and only thing that was any Decent for Lost Ark and New World. Honestly New World is really good, if only they didnt make it too easy to level/mess up end game. Still sad about New World. a lot of stuff in that game were really fun to play.
@@Viewingaccount123 honestly, looks like a cookie cutter mobile Japanese game. Seen and played plenty. It be fun for first 1-3 months, and it die down like all others.
Its such a good game. Same with rs3 tbh (other than the cash shop and key drop) but I will still play rs3 and pretend like the cash shop doesn't exist while leveling all my stuff and getting necromancy off the ground lol
W101 was a game my cousin got me into when I was 14yrs old. W101 will always hold a special place in my heart. I do jump from time to time on my acc and my cousins who passed away 😭.
Love Guild Wars. Would love to see a Guild Wars 3 to incorporate some updated graphics/effects and to see how they would use a lot of the newer game design tools that have come out in recent times.
@@cyberyaya8483 The game is nowhere near dead, there are still massive zergs fighting over cyrodiil The combat does feel better over time. The ability to mix and match skills from ~20 tree lines is very refreshing and allows for a lot of build crafting. Give it a try without being set on the "this combat sucks" mindset and see if you like it. The one thing ESO lacks imo is a good mount system. Currently they're just a speed boost without any mechanics to it, which feels lame.
ESO was the only one I stuck with honestly. I love the design, love the world, love the classes. Just my personal thoughts of course, I’m definitely more of a casual player that plays for fun and isn’t bothered by metas etc. Just love this game 😂
I agree it was a really good casual MMO. For just playing a ton of characters and tinkering with the abilities to fine my preferred combination I enjoyed myself. I didn't enjoy the end game though when it became farm these different armor sets that are only strong for the set bonuses. From what I have seen of people playing New World it also has that pitfall of farming different armor sets and that game design never seems to go well.
Gotta say, I wish DDO had a larger player base. Theres no game that I’ve played that comes even remotely close to the experience I’ve had on DDO. The aspect of reincarnation, you can level up to cap and then (using the same character) start back at level one as a totally new class if you want. And each time you do it, you get a specific character buff depending on the class you were previously. All of these buffs stack and each life you get a new one. This allows you to literally see the increase in power each time you make the choice to re level. Not only this but there are iconic classes. These classes start at level 15 and can be reincarnated at level 30. Not only this but the amount of options you can choose. You can splash different classes in with your primary class to get specific feats like evasion which helps when avoiding traps. Rogue’s actually ARE USEFUL. You can disarm traps, open doors, and unlock certain chests. Healing? Tank? DPS? Absolutely but there is no limit in how you can build your toon. There’s so many classes and races, there’s many quests and raids. If you don’t like the reincarnation aspect? There is a legit endgame. You can level a toon up to cap, enjoy the end game content as long as you want and when you want to try something new, you can TR all the way back to lvl 1 or even just to level 20. Although, lvl 20 reincarnation you’d be the same class but you can switch out feats. You could go from a two handed fighter to a single weapon fighter if you wanted. (Etc) Does the game lag? Sure. There are frustrating moments. But in my opinion the diversity of class and character customization outweighs absolutely every game that is out right now. There’s no battle pass, and it’s free to play. Sometimes they release all of the adventure packs for free (on certain holidays). I’ve only paid for 3 expansions right now of the maybe 4-5 out. I’ve also ran into some of the long time elite players. The community on that game is VERY welcoming to new players. Everyone is helpful, they’ll tell you what items to look out for or even how to tweak your build to be optimal for raids. If you’re interested, see me on the Orien server.
Woah, lets not got it twisted with us OSRS players. No one begged the developers to reinstate the old version. They forced EOC upon us and as a result we collectivly boycotted the game and signed petitions to have it returned to its earliest format and as a result of that, we now control all and any updates from passing as a community.
Not really accurate. Many people wanted 2011 rs, but they "lied" and claimed they didn't have the files to reinstate to that version, so we got the 2007 instead.
I remember being in grade school going to the public library on a Saturday and all 30 computers being used by kids playing RS screaming prices and making trades at the grand exchange 😂
Yeah you're correct. I think a lot of the 'player base' that it lost during that 1 month from the population chart sheet was a large ban wave of bots. Regardless the game is amazing, and I mean amazing. The combat is probably the best combat I've ever experienced in all MMO's, but the end game is very grindy, requiring to do many Weekly and Daily activities to gear and account progress, or you can pay to progress which the game tries to encourage you to do. Overall the game from me gets a 7.5/10 and it would be a 9.5 if it wasn't so grindy and didn't encourage pay to win.
And GW2 has great combat. The variety of combat is incredible. The responsiveness is a blast. The dynamic Meta events with TRUELY dozens (20, 30 40 and more) of players: attacking the boss, reviving other players (everyone can heal), swapping weapons, dodging attacks, timing rotations, swapping weapons again, timing new rotations, timing special trait attacks, using utility attacks, taking a hit, struggling for survival, saved by another player, back into the combat ... down goes the boss, examining loot, salvaging loot, auto storing loot to the bank. Now, where is the next Meta? All for no monthly fee!!! I never have to to "Pay to Play" (monthly fee) so you can "Play to Win". To support the game, I occasionally buy some Gems, use them on cosmetics and just enjoy the community. No one every requires me to Pay to Play.
It was my first character a male mage called Deathsdoor on StormShaddow server what made blizzard steal my name for a new area in the game. I was also a famous gnome mage called Tossie (originally Tossoff) My guilds completed all raid and dungeon instances at the time with me as raid leader 🤪😎
BDO is finally fixing many of the problems it had and why many players quit before including me. It definitely has the best combat and has the best graphics too.
Great video, something I always say about GW2: if it had used the holy trinity and released with a raid or two, it would have been, and probably still would be, the #1 MMO. It literally has everything else in spades, it just missed out on the hardcore teamwork aspect that most popular MMOs were/are known for.
I'm so burnt out on old MMOs. I'll give Throne and Liberty a try and I'm looking forward to Ashes of Creation. Aside from that, I just casually play some single player games these days
@@Danka524wild statement. The combat feels and looks great. The default button layout is not ideal, but you can literally change it lol The graphics look good too. I’m not a huge fan of the game menu and the a lot of elements don’t feel intuitive, but that combat with souls like counters and beautiful graphics and very little lag is amazing.
@@Danka524 I played the Korean version for 8 hours or so a while back. I thought it seemed like quite a polished modern MMO. I didn't have experience with the endgame yet, so I really can't say
@@Gobbldeegoo1 I think they shot themselves in the leg with tab target combat. The graphics look good indeed but I can't really explain exactly what I dislike except for that the combat felt generally bad for me
The reason why gw2 is so successful is because of the community, everyone is so friendly and helpful if you are looking for an mmo look no further than gw2
And also, GW2 does not demand $13 / month to just log in. And also, the combat is dramatically more fun than FFXIV (in my 12 years of experience). This being said, I fully support each person declaring their own choice of a favorite MMO. "Most Played" does not mean the best for you. YOU choose what is best for you. GW2 has a free version across a massive game world. AND, when you buy an expansion, don't worry about paying a fee to just log in to play. A monthly fee is the ultimate "Pay to Play" before you can "Play to Win".
the issue i had with guild wars was that the end game didn't really seem to exist. you got to max level quickly and there wasnt an obvious progression beyond that. it was fun the first few weeks that i played it though.
I've loved FFXIV since A Realm Reborn. Such a great experience! The community is fantastic, and the Main Story Quests must be experienced. There is always something to do to keep your attention. Whether it's the games at the Gold Saucer, the robust crafting system, doing dailies and weeklies, hanging out with your Free Company mates, building your island sanctuary, decorating your house, or trying to get all the mounts and minions, it definitely pulls you in. There is something for everyone.
I just wished they never changed pvp from how it was in HW. For me FF14 has the best pve and story but pvp is my main enjoyment and when they changed it in SB my brothers and I just stopped playing.
FFXIV is very fun but the story is not good. I tried to follow for the first 50 levels then realized it's not worth it. There is waaaaay too much dialogue so I finally started skipping everything.
No fucking way, anyone is able to play EsO without the sub to acquire that unlimited Crafting bag, It isn't even Negotiable. I don't want to be in my inventory clearing it out, every 15 minutes.
Very true, inventory without sub is pain. But is manageable if you create own guild and get 10 ppl in - will unlock 500 slots in guild bank - what is handy.
It's 100% a necessity. Couldn't agree more. Add on the mount leveling on new alts and the long drawn learning of crafting recipes. There's a reason I never stuck around in the long term.
too bad there is still this 10 year error that never been fixed where it say u need code from a mail but u never get it.... many players cant play the game because of that. I'm surprised it was never addressed
@@raass233 The runescape at that time is pretty much "OSRS" as we know it today. The low graphics and shockwave player etcetc. Before it evolved to RS3 I think in the 2010's or something.
as an avid LOTRO player the community is by far not the best and not even the best in the MMO genre. FFXIV’s community is definitely the best and most accepting I’ve seen out of all the established MMO’s
@@razorz3290 genuinely curious in what way you say FFXIV is close to WoW community wise? FFXIV doesn’t gatekeep content by having achievements like AOTC and isn’t nearly as toxic with people just being gross and bailing out of content after a single wipe. So I’d like to know your experience
LotRO is nowhere near the best, not saying it's bad but if it was known for a strong community the game would be doing better than it is. FFXIV isn't the best either, it's strong but with numbers comes toxic behaviour, it's nowhere near as bad as wow though that community is easily bottom 2 with LoL players. GW2 would be the best community most welcoming, most helpful, their "mentor" system the mentors actually help new players and you can always find someone to help you clear content and experience the game. I played wow from release right up to DF beginning then quit, I've played FFXIV and still do regularly and gw2 on and off I've also played LotrO but couldn't get on with it because I was asking for help constantly and was always ignored so gave up Thank you for listening to my ted talk 😂
Cool recap! For future editions my suggestion is to try and show the numbers (like you did for new world and lost ark) even if its just an approximation so we can get a better idea of the rankings (i was particularly interested in the numbers and im sure many people out there are too) Keep up the good work!
I've dabbled in a ton of different MMO's over the years, with the exception of anything that came out in 2020 or 2021, you name it I've played it. The ones I tend to always go back to in a rotation (somewhat random order) are FF14, Destiny 2, GW2, WoW, SWToR, OSRS, and bouncing around to different WoW PServers... usually Project Ascension, sometimes Warmane. I feel myself being pulled back to FF14 for the expansion, though. You're spot on by saying that the Devs treat their players the best out of any other MMO community, simply from personal experience of playing so many MMO's since basically 2001/2002.
Guild Wars was the most epic pvp game ever with RuneScape behind it. If Guildwars makes another game and they make it similar to the first one I will play it for sure.
Hey Lucky, Good list. Missed Guild Wars 2 , Janthir Wilds expansion. Launching , August 20th. Going to be the best player housing in any MMO out there currently. Plus land spears . New story , Arena Net doesn't advertise that well . Throne & Liberty combat is garbage. I wanted BDO style . They made some hybridize tab target system. Boring gameplay for me. The large scale PvP matches look okay in T&L . GW2 or ESO , do Realm vs Realm better imho. From the developers of DAOC & Warhammer Online. Thanks for this
Started BDO on july and I have zero regrets, I am loving the game, I love doing quests and grinding and I am slowly getting into PVP, participating in Wars with my guild and it's just so much fun!
I dropped the game because it felt like the game is too easy at the beginning ! U kill every mob, even bosses are so easy. You have a ton of skills at the beginning also. The progression did not feel right for me.
Just want to point out a small mistake.. During the MapleStory segment, you state that it has 260million registered members and the only MMO to come close is WoW.. which is not true. Runescape celebrated their 200 million registered accounts... in 2012! It's fair to assume that this number has since increased and is either close to MapleStory's 260M or even higher. Good video, though!
Lets go lol osrs still up here taking names. I love that. I played for the first time in probably 2002 or 03. Back before the osrs 07 look for sure. Had white drop down boxes and was goofy as hell but the first multiplayer game i ever saw.
@@NicTadaronne They are currently in Beta switching from Flash to Unity so they are getting a complete graphics and interface overhaul, a mobile cross-platform port, and it will make it easier to implement future updates. They've been working on the Unity port for five years so it's kind of a big deal and a good sign that there's plenty more Dofus to come.
"Free to play and 100% pay to win." Most accurate description of Albion Online lol. Is there any great MMOs out there anymore? Hope Corepunk comes out soon.
Lol,still so dumb for me to think about the words "PAY TO WIN" like how you call it a pay to win if you still got azz whooped by a player that are not paying, for example me myself payed real money and baught a max tier weapon and armor but still low tier player that is skillfull beat me,Maybe i can only call it "Pay to buy advantage weapon or fancy weapon" not to Win,haha,my point here is playing albion online to win a fight it need your skill in fighting using your set,and to win the game? you need to be good on business how to get a lot of silver by using the economy of the game not your credit card
Question for the comments: Out of all these games listed, or not, which MMO RPG has the least amount of monetization & fair amount of grinding involved? I’m not about to download 5 different MMOs to try if I’m gonna end up wasting my time, effort, and money progressing towards something that won’t bring me a sense of enjoyment as Destiny & Destiny 2 both have in the last decade. Looking forward to the replies!
The one that fits your comment would be new world that only ask you to buy the game once and it's expansions, other similar entries would be GW2, Star Wars and Elder Scrolls but the last has more monetization than the other in the form of a cash shop. If you are willing to pay a subscription wow and FFXIV are at the top for a reason, they are very accesible and very fun if you like the combat mechanics. A personal favorite is osrs with only a members subscription you get a sheer amount of quality content, there is a barrier of entry by on the old mechanics but trust me it has a skill ceiling, it doesn't get stale. Eve and Albion are both grindy and p2w but really that's the appeal since the focus is on the player economy. But most importantly you want to avoid maple story and lost ark for the gridniness
Maplestory on a reboot server is fine (no p2w just grind) also not very beginner friendly with how much stuff it throws at you GW2 has a high entry price with how many extensions it has FFXIV is great and only asks you to play as much as you want the cash shop only has event items and cosmetics (it does have story skip and a boost to lvl but that's only useful if you want to get a second character though the story) Would give it a try and see if you like it (the trial has no time limit) TESO is pretty expensive and I personally don't like the gameplay that much BDO is very p2w (people say it's pay for convenience which in my opinion it's not) Lost Ark is also extremely p2w
New World always has recurring bugs/exploits that would seemingly be patched one update then comes back the next update. It got so tiring that the Auction House would constantly get disabled because of it too.
Guild Wars 2 is the best MMO I've played. The new expansion that just came out has a lot of cool things. The first of the new zones is great and the overhaul of the warclaw mount is really awesome. As time goes we will see how the new release schedule goes where a small content update is done every three months instead of a huge content update every few years.
The only thing bad for ffo is the subscription process every time I finish and go and log In I get hit with an account doesn't exist even though I just created it
for final fantasy 14? If so, I've had a similar problem and the solution was that emails are case sensitive and youd need to use the exact same capitals/lowercase letters you used when creating the account.

There's been a resurgance of old MMOs that have come back that I'd like to hear your population stats on: City of Heroes: Homecoming, Everquest 2 Origins, Warhammer Return of Reckoning, Dark Age of Camelot Eden, Vanguard emu etc. They don't have populations to hit the top 20 or even 50 but still would like to hear about them.

@@Sanguivore I don't play it now. I'm also waiting for them to get further along with it and increased population. I played it when it originally released and it was a great game for its time with really neat class mechanics that was executed poorly with really bad optimization and technical issues that caused its early demise.
RS2 was probably my first and longest love in terms of MMOs, especially during middle and high school. Ragnarok Online also, even though I had zero clue what I was doing in it (rip).
EQ has been doing ban waves the past couple years which has taken out large chunks of the community and then when you are sitting around with a dropoff in players like that it kills the desire to even play yourself. I'm going through this right now on Mischief where the server population took a nose dive from where it was last year and trying to do anything now is too much of a hassle when i could just queue up for an ARAM in league and be playing right away. the early TLP cycle still maintains a decent number of players, but after I have down it a couple times now its too boring and what I wanted was to see the rest of the game, not play the same first 5 expansions over and over that I already know everything about them.
@@rynejones8513 ya i kinda found this myself with latest tlp. i did get to VP and clear it, but with velious going now, i am just to busy in FFXIV to do it
Final Fantasy 14 is really good. gives the old mmo nostalgia feelings but yet new and more story focused. so those who like singleplayer games but miss the mmo feel this is the one! ALSO the community is so nice!
The old MMO nostalgia and FFXIV have no business in being in the same phrase unless you are mentioning how far apart they are from each other lol. Don't take me wrong FFXIV is really fking good but older MMO's are not only harder and more challenging but also had global open world PvP and world chat group search for dungeon hunting. Actual ingame economy existed and people were just way more friendly back then. Rivalries were a thing and all of that made it a much better experience.
@@dorayaki5494 Lol sorry if you misunderstood my meaning. maybe im not an expert but in my youth i played a lot of Perfect World and not long ago i started FF14 and i got similar feeling to that when i played Perfect World back then. kind off.
I don’t know the Combat is very very slow for me to get into, I tried it in Beta and was turned off and then tried it years later and wasn’t moved. If it was action combat without the timer like old FF then it would be better and more fast paced.
In albion online you can do basically everything for free, you just have to grind a bit for a premium which u can buy either with ingame currency or with real money. Also its not P2W too much cuz as he said its full loot - If you die, it doesnt matter if you bought that with ur money or ingame currency, you will lose that anyways (only in certain areas). Is this the new expansion in august? I’m so tempted if so. Played through vanilla to mists, haven’t found something which scratches the itch like wow did.
@@the1abstrakt So the World Soul Saga is actually 3 confirmed expansions starting with the newest xpac 'The War Within' releasing this August. After a full xpac cycle (usually 2 major updates with 2 minor updates in between) we will move onto 'Midnight' and lastly 'Last Titan'
I thought about getting back into Lost Ark because of the combat and dungeons. And Gw2 fluctuates, honestly. We all need breaks from it. But it never completely dies because we never have to play it all the time. I've thought about playing BDO. It is crazy how long Maple Story has been around. Rune Scape is one of those games that has gamers respect due to being around this long.
Eh, As long as it has no cutsie eastern rpg crap. Also an option to skip all dialogue and cutscenes. I honestly couldn’t get into FF because of the story. I just wanted to play the game but was forced the trudge through 45 minutes of story before I could even kill my first thing in the game. Yeah no thanks.
@alxds why do people avoid the story? I don't get why you'd play a game at all if you don't care about the story. Just play cod multi-player or something then.
@@jacobmaloney7203 because there's mmos wher you're not forced to do a non-voice acted story. I went through all of ARR and the ARR post game and it was absolute garbage. The story itself was 11/10. The delivery was 2/10. Heavensward felt the exact same, but had some voice acting. Making it more bearable. On the other hand, there's games like WoW where players can CHOOSE whether or not they want to immerse. However, it doesn't give you the same kinda cutscenes you get from FFXIV. All of these games don't give you EVERY option. Why can't there be an MMO w/ action gameplay, cutscenes like new FFXIV content (fully voice acting), reacting of SWTOR (you get to pick what your character says + there's a karma system of some kind evil or good), and the gear design + PvP of WoW? That would quite literally be the perfect MMO. Just a simple 15/m sub model and they could have it all. Be at the top of the ladder.
@@jacobmaloney7203 I don’t like shooter gameplay, I like destroying hordes of enemies as a fantasy character. I love story, if it’s good, and serious. The cutsie style of eastern RPGs along with the very unmasculine looking males and the obvious eye candy female toons/races just for sex appeal in their games puts me off completely. I played the crap out of western RPGs because they tend to have a much more serious tone to them. Ultimately an mmo I’m there for the grind, that’s all an mmo is is an excuse to transfer the grind to dopamine. I don’t give a shit about a story in an mmo. If I wanted a story I’d go play the single player story driven RPGs that I also love. When it comes to MMOs though I don’t give two shits about the story, I want back into the gameplay loop. That being said an mmo the main thing you do is combat, the fact it takes more than 30 minutes to fight the first thing is an issue to me, it’s like it was hiding its generic combat. Which as far as MMOs go has pretty common combat. Now I’m probably biased as I started MMOs with asherons call, guild wars then to wow and then guild wars 2. But again they are western and have that western feel. So when I get that super campy eastern style with all the cute monsters like the walking cactus etc from a FF game I’m like dude log me the heck out. I even tried to play the most recent FF on ps5 the serious one where the protagonist actually looked like a male, but again the easterness of it takes me out. All the “tch” sound effects from talking etc drives me nuts. People don’t sound like that. It’s over written for the purpose of being over written. So if they had an option to skip all that, then yeah I’d probably be on board. I’m there for gameplay 100% before story if the gameplay is meh and the story is too count me out. And FF online is meh combat with meh over written story and waaaay to much dialogue. Same reason I couldn’t get into first descendant was the crazy amounts of dialogue. Again I don’t care, it tries too hard I feel like, or things are lost in translation from eastern games that just don’t fit with English. Now all that being said my all time favorite games are the monster hunter games but again, with the MHW the games been trying to shift towards a story and it’s garbage, I don’t play those games to understand why the dragons are doing what they are doing, just point me at the dragon and let me carve it to ribbons so I can carve body parts to make a better sword. And world was the worst with unstoppable cutscenes and not being able to play with people till they cleared missions was absolutely terrible. There’s a time and place for story, and multiplayer games isn’t it. You can have lore that’s available to look up for those interested. But forcing the story on you in a multiplayer game is the worst.
Albion online is shit he actually did it a massive praise for the crap it is, plus it's not an MMO so technically shouldn't be on this list atall. It's a standalone sandbox PVP game.
@@martas8994 they don't play them all at the same time, they just log on focus and refine. But they do that on hundreds of accounts. So it mostly affect monthly amd weekly numbers
Normally i am not commenting on youtube but this time i feel you treated albion very unfair. Its definitly not a pay to win game cause even though you can buy currency with irl money it doesnt make you a good player or let you win every fight cause the game is also skill based and additionally to that yes there is a monthly subsciption which gives you several advantages especially when it comes to leveling but you dont need to spend a single dollar if you dont want to cause you can just buy it with ingame currency aswell. Which leads me to my last point. If you make a comparison like that atleast make it fair. The gameplay you had running in the back was atleast 5 years old since then the game got a lot of changes and improvements in terms of gameplay and graphics. That beeing said still thanks for the informativ video and work you have put in.
He iven give add in albion online material sector, give all video material from like 5 years ago and show only steam numbers buth most players play on orginal luncher
I love FFXIV. I played a bunch of random MMOs growing up but now in my late 20s, FF’s the first one I’ve truly played on a daily basis for a few years now. I’m a massive story guy so obviously that’s a factor but I also like the sheer variety of content I can pursue, whether it’s raiding, extremes, ultimates, PvP (which is admittedly underbaked), Gold Saucer, crafting/gathering, deep dungeons, glam hunting, etc. I just don’t tire of setting new goals for myself for what I wish to achieve and I respect Yoshi-P, the devs, and Soken. I imagine this is what it felt like to be in love with WoW in the mid 2000s.
the way that FF14 handled dungeon/raid finders i found to be the most compelling. higher levels getting scaled down so that people progressing through the game the first time are able to still get groups and experience the game. i have mentioned that i wanted that in another mmo i played and that community surprisingly reacted very negatively against that, believing that the challenge of finding people and forcing social interaction rather than a finder system was ideal. i doubt many of them have actually played FF14 to have that opinion because i socialized more in FF14 than any other MMO, part of that due to the ease that you could play with other players using the finder system.
There are many players of ESO that have bought the game directly from Bethesda. They do not use Steam. Do you keep track of the players that are not on Steam?
this list does not use steam player counts as a metric for active players because many of these games aren't even on steam, or as you've mentioned, have a significant number of players not playing on steam. some games are exclusively on steam, like new world so we can look at those numbers there and see a pretty detailed story of whats happening
It would be worth it for you to just try and play a class with no pets. I get having preferences but stopping yourself from enjoying something you would enjoy because of a small preference is a bit sad.
@@theburgundynetwork3432 "stopping yourself from enjoying something you don't enjoy" is what you essentially just said. I don't enjoy the classes. Simple as that.
Talking about MMO definitely Albion Online is the purest MMO, but most people won't like it because of it's graphics and no class selection just like other MMO, but if we are talking about pvp and pve for MMO game Albion is the real MMO where it feels like the world runs by players and players is basically the system
FF14 has more than WoW, surprising actually. Although WoW is 20 years old this year! One thing to note, you said 2010 for FF14, technically that's true but it's also not. The 2010 version failed HARD, it was re-released as A Realm Reborn in 2013 after which the game's director (Yoshi P) told his team to go play other MMOs for a year (mainly WoW) then come back and they would make their game. So 9 years later after the hysteria of WoW in 2004 it was able to wrestle the title of most played away.
That will also be temporary. Also ff14 held the top spot over wow for a long time. The latest saga in ff14 is closing and it’s starting a new one so it’s kind of calming down story wise rn.
FFXIV also simply doesn't have more subs than WoW, even if we assume that WoW somehow lost 2/3rds of their playerbase in the last 4 months, they'd still be about equal to FFXIV. But such a drastic drop has never happened, not even when the game was in an infinitely worse state. It's pretty safe to say that WoW still has more players. And it's also a very reasonable assumption to say that FFXIV never actually surpassed WoW in terms of active players as the leaks which happened earlier this year proved that the actual sub count of WoW was much, much higher than any of the estimates out there. If we assume a similar discrepancy between estimations and actual sub count, even at it's peak, FFXIV would've probably only had 60-70% of WoW's sub count at the most.
Just got back into ESO after trying it before and been loving it a lot lately. Looking forward to playing it after work everyday. Love the single player aspect of it, just exploring the world and doing good quests, but the dungeons are legit really great. My top part of any MMO is running dungeons and the designs of even the early ones is awesome Play FF14 for a long time, but i just never could get into the story. It dragged so hard for me, especially in some of the interim sections between expansions. Love everything about that game except the quests I w
Don't forget that WoW playerbase got split a lot, firstly it got split into Classic and Retail + There are a lot of private servers with a lot of players. We can't really tell how big the playerbase is
@@rei35p I'm pretty sure DCUO has more active players than most of the games on this list. If you had done a little bit of research, you would know that.
I had more than 10000hours played at RuneScape when I stopped playing, had Comp.Cape that only those who do a lot of things in the game get, like all quests, all levels maxed, all important titles. The other day I logged in to see what was up, there's two new skills, dozen new bosses and lots of new quests. Logged off again :P Now I'm getting into Old School for those amazing quests that I only saw in RuneScape.
Idk but I could never get into ESO which apparently has an awful start before you get to the real game. I heard that 6 years ago btw never retried after that idk if it got better. Also doesn't help that im not a fan of elder scrolls gameplay in the first place
@@extrashifty578 ESO does not guide you particularly well and a lot of things are available early on, so it can be a bit overwhelming, but leveling is fairly quick and you have a lot of different things you can do on the way. Player skill does matter a lot though, so you should embrace the experience of getting better gradually, rather than expect to gear up and be ready for everything. It is definitely a good idea to check out guides and talk to more experienced players, if you want to do more than questing.
I played many MMORPG's for more than 20 years, I experienced both PVE/PVP content none of the mmos deliver so greatly as Guild Wars 2 does, Story - 10/10 Graphics - 8/10 (very stylized beutiful game) Gameplay - 10/10 Quests interactive world - 10/10 Boss fights, Dungeons, Raids - 11/10 Voice acted, Choices matter, character matters, One of the most interesting hybrid combat systems, Amazing World vs World pvp system which consists of Server vs Server battles of 1000 players (without LAG !!!!) BEST mount system !!! NO P2W !!! game is FULL of content and uses MEGASERVERS which means you are never alone ! try it out, and let it cook a little, you will find yourself swept away
The numbers speak for themselves. People hating on it here in the comments, because it’s not their favorite game, are just embarrassing. The success is fairly earned, may the better one win!
I really enjoyed the Throne and Liberty beta. Hope they listen to feedback and make the combat less clunky. Also hope there's enough hype for a decent population.

SWTOR was more taken from BioWare by EA then given over by BioWare, and the Dev team is reportedly happy to be out of under BioWare.
I remember being in grade school going to the public library on a Saturday and all 30 computers being used by kids playing RS screaming prices and making trades at the grand exchange 😂
isn't lost ark numbers heavily inflated because of the number of bots in that game
It was, but that's why it also decreased a lot, because a massive amount of bots were banned.

Lorewise, Swtor and gw2 are just amazing.
gw2 is good for exploring too. graphic seems a bit dated. and how all skill are locked to weapons idk. and need expansion for a (fly) mounts

Great video, something I always say about GW2: if it had used the holy trinity and released with a raid or two, it would have been, and probably still would be, the #1 MMO. It literally has everything else in spades, it just missed out on the hardcore teamwork aspect that most popular MMOs were/are known for.

Lotro is GREAT
as an avid LOTRO player the community is by far not the best and not even the best in the MMO genre. FFXIV’s community is definitely the best and most accepting I’ve seen out of all the established MMO’s
Lotro does have 100% best community. FFXIV is more closely to wow community. Lotro has aged beautifully as well. Lotro is prob the most underrated mmo
Ultima online had mounted combat decades before lotto What ? lol

GW2 is still my favorite from this list.

Maplestory on a reboot server is fine (no p2w just grind) also not very beginner friendly with how much stuff it throws at you
GW2 has a high entry price with how many extensions it has
FFXIV is great and only asks you to play as much as you want the cash shop only has event items and cosmetics (it does have story skip and a boost to lvl but that's only useful if you want to get a second character though the story)
Would give it a try and see if you like it (the trial has no time limit)
TESO is pretty expensive and I personally don't like the gameplay that much
BDO is very p2w (people say it's pay for convenience which in my opinion it's not)
Lost Ark is also extremely p2w
New World always has recurring bugs/exploits that would seemingly be patched one update then comes back the next update. It got so tiring that the Auction House would constantly get disabled because of it too.

The only thing bad for ffo is the subscription process every time I finish and go and log In I get hit with an account doesn't exist even though I just created it
for final fantasy 14? If so, I've had a similar problem and the solution was that emails are case sensitive and youd need to use the exact same capitals/lowercase letters you used when creating the account.
eso almost ruined my life i had to quit i was so addicted to it , 9000 hours of my life and loved every minute of it
Ff14 is very much worth the time and money. Truly and excellent game made by a team that respects its customers and their time. I highly recommend it!
it doesnt respect casuals anymore in dt it did back in ew
@@anteprs7908 sounds like a you problem
@@anteprs7908 To me casual doesn't mean to stand within all AoEs,, don't move and ignore all Boss warnings. Casual means, not to play savage, unreal, but to follow your own leasure way, move a bit slowlier than progress players.
You still can manage all normal dungeons and trials along the story and also the 8ppl Raids, but:
You are forced to observe Boss behaviour and react quicker than before. Your playing errors provoke harsch konsequences to your hp bar.

Love the story but it feels like you play on a rail, so uncomfortable.
There's been a resurgance of old MMOs that have come back that I'd like to hear your population stats on: City of Heroes: Homecoming, Everquest 2 Origins, Warhammer Return of Reckoning, Dark Age of Camelot Eden, Vanguard emu
etc. They don't have populations to hit the top 20 or even 50 but still would like to hear about them.
I'll look into them again, thanks!
Is there a decent amount of players on Vanguard emu? I wanted to check that one out, but only if there's people to play with.
@@Sanguivore unfortunately, not yet:( They're still getting it back to 100%. There's things missing like diplomacy rewards and end game content. I've seen about 20 or so players on generally.
@@GeekyGizmo007 Oh, geez. >.< Guess I should hold off on that one til a little further down the line then. Seems like a really fun and interesting game! Do you currently actively play?
@@Sanguivore I don't play it now. I'm also waiting for them to get further along with it and increased population. I played it when it originally released and it was a great game for its time with really neat class mechanics that was executed poorly with really bad optimization and technical issues that caused its early demise.
I'm most definitely playing New World when it comes to console in October. Looking forward to learning a new mmo.
new world is so bad sorry to disappoint
RS2 was probably my first and longest love in terms of MMOs, especially during middle and high school. Ragnarok Online also, even though I had zero clue what I was doing in it (rip).
I came back to FFXIV 4 months ago after a 6 year quit, and its still amazing. 😁
Kinda surprised New World keeps hanging on, and that EQ and EQ2 with their TLP, and Origns server respectively didnt manage to over take it.
Do you currently play EQ2? :O I just started, but I haven't yet met anyone to play with.
@@dorayaki5494 Lol sorry if you misunderstood my meaning.
maybe im not an expert but in my youth i played a lot of Perfect World and not long ago i started FF14 and i got similar feeling to that when i played Perfect World back then. kind off.
It's not THAT great
@@dynjarren5454 The community is not that nice. Try telling a healer to dps in a roulette.
Have a great day!
So excited for the return of Chris Metzens WoW and the World Soul Saga!
Is this the new expansion in august? I’m so tempted if so. Played through vanilla to mists, haven’t found something which scratches the itch like wow did.
@the1abstrakt for what it's worth, they've made a great deal of QoL improvements, and general game play improvements.
@@the1abstrakt So the World Soul Saga is actually 3 confirmed expansions starting with the newest xpac 'The War Within' releasing this August. After a full xpac cycle (usually 2 major updates with 2 minor updates in between) we will move onto 'Midnight' and lastly 'Last Titan'
sad to see how my first ever MMO has been reduced to multiple lazy soulless cashgrab games nowadays
i'm talking about ragnarok online
I love the game Devs care about their players/game, I will start FF today because of this fact.
Cool, i was looking for a video just like this, thank you!
Imagine an MMO with story quality and support of FFXIV with gameplay combat of BDO with dungeons of Neverwinter.
Probably the perfect MMORPG.
How about LOTRO?? Does anyone play it? It looks kinda good, considering trying it
i wish i had time for albion that game was the thing for me so much drama but those scenes are like 7 years old xD
I play in top guild in EU serwer and I can sey that real game start when you fight 200 vs 200 people with battle mounts around
Whaaat, no Lotro on that list :(
You did albion online so dirty... thats real fotage form 2007 wtf
Albion online is shit he actually did it a massive praise for the crap it is, plus it's not an MMO so technically shouldn't be on this list atall. It's a standalone sandbox PVP game.

New wolrd making top 15 is wild to me. Arnt they down to like 1,000 players online
Ew
He went by google search results and not concurrent online users
Locking mounts behind paywalls in MMO games will never make sense to me.
Why can i report these bot comments for alot of things but not that they are bots? Anyway thanks Lucky
Dood this is EXACYLY what I want to know!
I usually just report them as 'promotes terrorism' 🤷♂️
Conquer Online, Cabal, Aion, Sword of the New World (Granado Espada), Vindictus, the good ole days…
Guild Wars 2 is Top Tier.
It has so many underrated quality of life features. Other MMOs require all my time and pHd level knowledge to even begin
Just a note - GW2 did lose numbers for a bit from SOTO and now they loving the new update Jantha Wilds.
Wish I could I play FFXIV but I prefer pet classes and summoner just ain't it lol

I enjoyed new world more than any MMO I have played. Got a family so stopped playing but what a fun game.
I know throne and liberty is going to be on this list sometime
If this game wont be p2w i think so too
Well.. it's better than BDO at least
It won't be for long. The game sucks.
That doesn’t quite add up. Just fact-checked the numbers and WoW is still far ahead.

@@kcasino91 i dont even play wow or gw2, whats so funny?
FF14 is better than both of them as someone who has played them all and doesnt even play FF14 in the last few years
@captainobvious8037 nah vanilla gw2 was great , after HOT they killed pvp balance and the game is just a casual collector skin fest.
Whenever I look at these MMO lists I always come back to the same conclusion: *sigh* should I invest my time in FF14? Am I ready to commit to an RPG?
FFXIV is currently number 1 because Dawntrail just released. Once War Within releases WoW will take first spot again.
@@hampustornros good thing this list was for active players. Nobody cares about subs lol
FF14 is the better game though, so it will probably slowly continue to take over

Just got back into ESO after trying it before and been loving it a lot lately. Looking forward to playing it after work everyday.
Love the single player aspect of it, just exploring the world and doing good quests, but the dungeons are legit really great. My top part of any MMO is running dungeons and the designs of even the early ones is awesome

Now I'm getting into Old School for those amazing quests that I only saw in RuneScape.
How are more people playing lost ark than ESO????
ESO has more players for sure
in NA ESO is more popular, Word Wide, lost ark is more popular (its free to play) --- but lost ark is falling fast, and likely wont be higher for long
Lost ark numbers are also highly inflated due to a plague of undetected bots, gradually outnumbering real players lol.

I really enjoyed the Throne and Liberty beta. Hope they listen to feedback and make the combat less clunky. Also hope there's enough hype for a decent population.
