How to FIX PS5 External Hard Drive Not Working or Recognized (Format EASY)

- Do you want to know how to fix your External Hard drive on your PS5 when it's not working, or not showing up and it's not recognized! So to fix this turn off your PS5. Then hold down the power button and launch your PS5 into the safe mode menu. Then rebuild the database on your PS5. This should fix many hard drive issues. Also, you can try reformatting the drive on the PC to exFAT.

One more detail for those using external drives with their PS5: Go into the PS5's power settings and set it so that the USB ports always receive power in when in rest mode. This will prevent a recurring issue with external drive corruption.

Thanks man just got a 8tb extended storage and it wasn't popping up on my ps5 so I put it in safe mode and rebuilt the database and it works now 👍
When you said to try using the ports in the back, that's all I needed. Didn't have to hold no power button, etc. Thank you 😊
Thank you this work I safe mode and then rebuild database and I can access my extended storage PS4 even though I'm on the PS5 so eliminating some games so there's some room

Fixed my issue of file transfers from the PS5 to the extremal drive dying after a few seconds. Storage seems like such an issue with these modern games, the basic 800gb that comes with the PS5 is basically nothing if your playing AAA games.
Hard drive works fine when reconnecting while ps5 is on ( games work, everything is fine ) but does not work from cold boot or restart. ( something went wrong message ) Any ideas?

When I turn my PlayStation on it mentions M.2 SSD Inserted into the ps5 but I don’t have one in? It then tells me to turn off the PlayStation? It hasn’t been working for nearly 2 months now. Any tips on resolving this?
So I got my PlayStation five back in April 2021 and this issue never occurred and then when it did I decided to buy an extra terabyte hard drive so I can download more games but I just did both of these steps and I still can’t download extra games so I don’t know what to do

Sadly it did not work. Did the reset and the clear catch. Made sure 1Tbt USB is formatted correctly on my computer. Directly connected it to the back.

Every single time. Very frustrating.
Try formatting it to NTFS on your PC and then plug it back into your PS5, turn it on and see if it gets recognized. If it does, you should be able to format it directly from your PS5.

@@aaronpadley7266 I returned the SSD and just used my ps4 External drive you can put ps5 games into it but you can’t play them so it’s kinda still ok but I saved myself $120 👍🏽

He meant if u go the 2nd option route to recognise the USB. Also as a safety measure, all game save data exists on system storage on the ps5. The USB extended storage only downloads and stores the game data for the app to be played. Ur actual game save data is on the ps5 system storage. It's just like that.

No way you're actually looking at your hard drive files on the computer how did you do that they are using an encryption, I really need to salvage my playstation 4 data somehow.

Same issue, just connected a portable 2tb Seagate. Only reads ps4
PS5 is currently only setup to store ps4 software to any USB storage drive. I hope in the future they will fix this (although I imagine any software run from a USB storage drive will need to be fairly high read/write speeds). What you are looking for sir is a M.2 SSD

I have all my games and saved data on my hard drive from ps4 and now I’m on ps5 if I do this will it delete any of my saved data ?
Ps saves both to system and cloud. Its best to use your ps4, if you still have it, and upload your saves to cloud. This'll make sure your data isn't lost if the drive ever becomes corrupted, and download it back to the ps5 system. You can plug your external drive straight to the ps5. You just won't be able to store ps5 games on your external depending on the one you have. Older drives will only let you play ps4 games off of them. If you want to store a ps5 game on it, some drives will let you. You just won't be able to play them without being stored on the system instead.

@@hybrid_Batman so what happened to your ps5? Mine use to work pretty good, got the wd 5tb extenal HDD in 2021. I had a few problems earlier on, but I always could get it back working. Now I can't, unless I want to reformat the drive. Which I'm not doing for a third time. Hopefully when I get a SSD, it works better. The only reason I got the HDD is because the SSD drives were like $1000 when it came out and not much storage in it. Think I may get the 4tb internal ssd.

Nothings working
PS5 has been a neverending nightmare so far. Every game crashes after an hour. Every movement takes a whole minute to process. Store doesn't even load images. Ext HDDs/SSDs are suddenly unrecognizable.
Step 1: made PS5 finally find the PSSD T7 again... I can select it but just can't use it, format it...nothing. (something went wrong) is a message I'm so fed up with on this POS console.
Step 2 and 3 I'll do but after that it's going out the window. 😅

ONLY in the top USB port in the back of the PS5 with a USB3.0 cable it works. Jeez. 🙄
