If you have a PS5, Never Do This

- If you have a PS5 & use external hard drive, NEVER do this! Here's why... Here's some important tips for using Playstation 5 extended storage! I'm actually surprised that some Playstation users are doing this wrong. When using an external hard drive with your PS5, remember to ALWAYS use the back USB ports & NEVER use the front one. If you do this, your Playstation 5 extended hard drive will not work. Always remember to safely eject your PS5 external hard drive BEFORE unplugging it.. If you don't do this, it's possible you will have corrupt data on your hard drive.

From UA-cam's standpoint, however, they actually would rather have (and encourage) content creators to make it as long as possible (because its more advertising time). The algorithm actually favors longer videos and are more likely to recommend.

Just asking to be sure. Can you disconnect the external drive IF the PS5 is already off (not in sleep mode)? Or do I have to turn the PS5, eject and then disconnect?
@@TheThunderer1701 you can but I’d rather safely disconnect it
Here’s an added tip. If you use an external, a back up power supply might be a good idea. I lost 4 TB worth of games and saves during a thunderstorm.
I learned these tips from experiencing them myself and had so much trouble. I had to reformat or reindex the external hard drive several times back when I first got my PS5 to the point where I was considering returning the PS5 to the store. The sad part is, even when I disconnected the external hard drive through the system menu first, then unplugged it, it would always result in the same issue either way. On or off, showing connected or not, it caused some weird corruption.
Even after the updates that Sony released, I’m afraid if I ever disconnect the hard drive in any way again that I’ll have these issues, but I hope not.
All you have to do is make sure the power to the system is completely cut off. Meaning that the system is not in rest mode. Sure completely down and you can unplug no problem.

If I may add 2 extra tips. Do not run rebuild database in recovery mode with an external drive plugged in. Ive tried this twice and each time multiple games on the external drive become corrupted. Also if you are transfering more than 300GB of games I would suggest breaking it up to 150-200GB at a time, and restarting the PS5 before each session to avoid corrupted game transfers. This has happened to me at least 3 times before I figured it out. It will also be faster because the transfer speed slows down significantly after a continuous tranfers of over 300GB. BTW for reference I'm using a Seagate Barracuda SSD on one PS5 and a Samsung T5 SSD on another.
Is the PS5 really that bad where u can't even transfer 300GB worth of games all in one shot?
@@christianaquino5230 At the time it launched yes. There have been a handful of updates since then so the situation may be different. I haven't had a need to transfer that amount of data since then to know.
@@christianaquino5230 it's because hdds are trash using a external SSD should be better

Dumb question. Would it be safe to turn of my ps5, along with connected external, by using the power button, hold method for full shut down?Would it safely shut down the hdd via this method or cause unfordeen issues? I know, dumb question but I m asking for a really dumb friend lol.
I was thinking of getting one for my ps5 so thanks for ur advice 😊 I love that u get straight to the point in the videos. brilliant 👏
Good info, for this and any modern high speed data transfer devices. like others have pointed out, it’s the high bit rate ports that you want to use. USB 3 and higher (the blue ones) or the USB C port (use appropriate adapter if needed) Cheers!
Also a good idea to set your USB ports to be always on, so that your drive won’t auto shut off/disconnect if you use rest mode (default shuts them off after 3 hours). You can set this in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
For the drive, Sony actually recommends using the USB-C port on the front first, if your drive has the cable for it. (If not, then yes, use the back ports - the front USB-A port is not super speed).

In light of your video, how do you recommend changing an external drive currently being used with a PS5 (which contains PS4 games), with a larger capacity external drive? How do you get the content from the smaller to the newer larger external drive (without copying to the PS5 internal drive)? I have been told that as long as the game saves are uploaded to the cloud with PS Plus, I can simply connect the new drive, format and redownload/reinstall all the games onto the larger drive. Is this the best way?

I would like to add that you CAN plug an external hard drive in the front if you're using the USB-C connection. I have my external SSD connected that way and it moves games back and forth lightning fast
So can you can't play it right off the external? And how fast? I've been debating on buying an external or just swapping the SSD
@@johnborsil5396 I use it for PS4 games, that way the main internal hard drive is only being used for ps5 games
@@johnborsil5396 I just got an external WD SSD 1TB, downloaded a game to it and found it won't play. Either I'm missing something, or didn't quite understand how the external SSD works.
Weird how this came in my recommended after my external hard drive started messing up. Glad it did now I know a good external hard drive to use. Thanks!
I'm not at the point that my internal ps5 drive is full, but these tips are very useful as i certainly will have to use external drives in the future. Great video! thx!
Thought this was click-bait the other day when I came across this, but this was actually useful. I was wondering how you would safely eject it and didn't know you had to use the USB slots on the back. So big thanks, good work :)
- Don't plug in headsets or other accessories to the front either, that front port is solely used for charging purposes
- ps5 games are designed to take advantage of the internal ssd so they can't be played from the external hard drive, only stored there. You have to move the ps5 game back to the internal ps5 storage in order to play it, which is still faster than downloading/copying it again especially if there are a lot of updates. Sony is in the process of allowing you to play games from an external ssd (not hdd) for a future update
- ps4 games can be played from an external hard drive
- hard drives have to be plugged directly into the ps5 USB port, they can't be plugged into a USB hub that is plugged into the ps5
- you can also use the USB-C port on the front of the ps5 to plug in an external hard drive, which can actually achieve faster read /write speeds if the external supports it
- you can have multiple hard drives plugged in at the same time, but you can only have 1 active at a time
- If you found any of these tips helpful, feel free to subscribe :) I make call of duty zombies content and as you can see I enjoy doing in depth research for every topic
Just got an external SSD for my PS5. Which will have faster read/write speeds: plugging it into the back USB A slot or the front USB C slot? Currently I use my USB C slot to charge my controller because I have a super long type c to type c charger but I can change that if you think it will be faster to plug my SSD into that.
@@SuperSergio612 I believe the type c will be faster but honestly it's not a big deal until you can play from an external ssd, then it will matter for load times. Currently it only matters for copy times and you'll still get solid performance from the rear slots.

Thanks for the Quick and very helpful tips on this subject. Some info that I think would have also been helpful to include in this video includes:
>You do provide technical details about the minimum and maximum external HDD/SSD sizes that the PS5 supports.
>You do indicate that not all HDD/SSD are compatible. It would be valuable information to also include details about
what type of Format properties should be used when formatting an external HDD/SSD to use with the PS5.
It is my understanding that when using a USB Flash/Thumb Drive to import/export Save Game Data, etc. that it must be formatted to either

I realize this is two years late, but it’s funny how many people think that looks better. It washes out the image when you do that. It’s artificially brightening the picture, without enhancing the color, like actual HDR content. In other words, you’re shining a brighter light onto existing colors that haven’t been enhanced to pop and compensate for that light shining on them. The only time “HDR Always On” looks ok is with an OLED, or QD-OLED, thanks to the TV’s deeper colors. Otherwise, forcing HDR on non-HDR games makes them look brighter, but overall worse. So many people think brightness = good picture. It doesn’t.

I have another tip about disconnecting the hard drive. You should always disconnect it from the console’s settings every time you turn your PS5 off. In the event of a power outage, your hard drive will be unsafely disconnected from the system, even if the PS5 is already off. The hard drive is always connected to the system, and a power outage, or turning a wall switch or power strip off if the PS5 is connected to either one of those will cause an unsafe disconnect.

A few additional tips:
1. You can use the front USB-C port for external storage. But I'd strongly recommend anyone to use the ports on the rear. You'll need the front USB Type-C port in the future for PlayStation's next VR headset. That's if -off course- you're planning on getting one in the future. I'd strongly recommend everyone to use the ports in the rear. The front USB-C uses a controller with Display-alternate mode which suggests that it's highly likely you'll need it for VR. You can get a good male Type-C to female Type-A adapter for a few bucks if you haven't got a Type-A (OG) cable in the box.
2. Don't put a USB-hub between your PS5 and your external drive. It will simply not work. You'll have to put the external drive directly to your PS5.
3. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen. 1 are the same. Higher number are just fine, just make sure you're drive is at least 3.0.
4. If you can afford it, get an external SSD instead of an external HDD. UA-cam channel Digital Foundry has a good video showing what the benefits are of playing PS4 games from an external SSD.

Awesome video very useful and quite interesting... Thx mate 💪🏿😎👍🏿
Took 2 years but I finally got mine from PS direct for reg retail price.
I use a WD 5TB Ext. HDD. It works well. You just have to format it when you hook it up, which the PS5 Recognizes and does for you. Just don’t ever pull it out, without SAFELY EJECTING it first; other than that, you’re good. :)
Did you notice any speed/performance differences using an HDD vs a SSD external?
@@rubyt45 i think the PS5 games are obviously faster on the Int. SSD, but sometimes on certain PS5 games that are in the Ext.HDD; I do feel like they are slightly faster than when they were on the Int.SSD before I ran out of space and transferred them onto the Ext.
It’s weird. All in all, maybe a little faster for larger games, like COD, cuz of the extra room on the HDD? Lol less work than when on the Int. SSD.
Wait, you can play from external drive?
@@DannyDL1ght The games I have on it seem to play fine that are loaded to it…I keep my PS5 on the INT SSD and most of my PS4 on the EXT…but a couple games said i needed to have them on the INT to play; so I don’t play them lol im just waiting to upgrade the INT now with the new update…just need about ‘tree fiddy’ for that 2TB SSD stick
@@DannyDL1ght yeah, just checked it out. The PS5 ones need to be copied over and can’t be played from the EXT, but PS4 can; hence why i keep most of my PS5 on INT and the rest on the EXT, lol
Just for clarification.. i always unplugged my external drive from my PS4 after shutting it off. This would still work with the PS5 or do i really have to always disconect it first in the settings before unplugging? Would be great if someone can answer. :)
thank you, gonna be buying one today!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’ve done this Glad I did it RIGHT..🤜🏼🤛🏼
I actually use the USB C port on the front for my 1TB Samsung T7 SSD and it’s been good.
I've got exactly the same setup and no problems either
Same here 🔥
Yeah mine didn't seem to work with the back one and just kind of assumed I'd have to wait for a system update. Tried it in the front and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
Same here, had mine like that for months with no problems. Then I needed the front usb c port for my arctic 7p headset so I changed over to a a usb A 3.1 cable and the rear port. I haven’t noticed any difference whatsoever
Same here I have my 500gb Samsung t5 plugged into the front type c port and have had no issues
Don’t rebuild your date base while the drive is connected..unplug it first then replug.
That’s where I screwed up... and my games are screwed. But I can’t delete the data for the life of me.
@@linofaleafine6831 delete and download em again what’s the problem? I did it after I learned the lesson the hard way:(
Perfect tip i didnt evevn know thank you so much
I realized that even without knowing you couldn't connect the USB hard drive in the front end of the console, thanks for confirming
I think the manual says they prefer you use the USB-C port for plug in up front for external HDD.
