Nice to see that 2 years later this is still a problem
@@FezCaliph Yep Just had it happen to me but with the actual WD Black 2TB that you plug into the PS5. I thought it was the PS5 at first. Thankfully had warranty on it, swapped it. Booted up my new PS5 with the that WD stick plugged. Noticed during initial boot up it doesn't give me an option to format. So I removed it, installed again. Once I booted it up this time, it gave the black screen of death just like my previous PS5. At that point I knew, it wasnt the PS5. I took out the dam 2TB WD stick, PS5 booted up just fine. RiP all my saved games on that.
Oh man, I had given up 2 years ago to use mine and now I’m running out of space. So disappointed to come here to check what people have been reporting and sadly still happening… there is no way sony couldn’t figure out a way to fix it since the launch…
@@troywithers444im using the same device and I go to turn it on today and its broken but light still comes on the hard drive

It’s really good to hear someone else talking about this issue. Suuuuper frustrating
hey with the new playsatyion service coming up in June with 400 games service, do u think I need a 2 or 4 tb HDD to store ps4 games..I will be using my internal ps5 storage to store ps5 games
Hey man, great video. The guy at the retail store told me to be careful with the external HDD. I know it's only a small amount of cases compared to those who don't have this problem, but since there's a lack of consoles atm, I'm not going to risk this.
I've got a 4tb external HDD for my ps4 and it's got at least 2,5tb worth of games. I don't stick around 1 or 2 games and like to have a good variety. I hope Sony fixes this soon, and seeing the recent firmware update they are working hard on getting things right.
I guess we'll just have to wait, but it's good to see confirmation of the crashes actually happening.
Thanks for the update!
Good flow brother. Keep up the good work.
Great video, keep it up brotha
Thank you for talking about this problem, I also have the ps5 and it keep crashing with the HDD connected
mine wont let me repair it and it says i must format it but when i go to format it it shows that i dont have and external hard drive for me to format it
plz help me cause it has all my games on it and i cant play any
Yes this has been happening for me. I notice this mostly happens if you play a game while downloading a update to your hdd
Thanks for the video. It's weird that I didn't have this issue until I downloaded Spider-man remastered and began playing it. Then the system crashed the next time I tried to start my PS5. I was able to play Spider-man remastered for a while, then it crashed mid-game. Its really frustrating and needs to be fixed.
Any updates on this matter? Still sketched out to plug in my external HD into the PS5.
Do you have any info on spiderman miles morales or spiderman remastered having this issue? I was playing the ps4 version on my ps5 installed on the ssd of the ps5 and suddenly it crashed and gave me the “rebuilding storage database” or something and after starting the game again the game was all buggy. So i didn’t even play it anymore on ps5. Has to bust out my ps4 to hunt the remaining trophies

mine says to next time safely remove external storage even tho it is still hooked up and i never removed it but it no longer says i have extra storage and i have to format and delete what ever is on the drive at the time over and over again i have no clue what to do
Downloaded bf4 onto my usb storage from the ps store. Played it for a day or so with no problems. Started it up the next day and when I tried to load into a lobby it crashed and told me I had corrupt data and to delete and reinstall the game. I did so and it still gave me the same error. Could this be something else or is the extended storage my problem?
Been looking for a reason my ps5 just shuts off to the point I have to pull the ac cord and put back in just to turn it back on. Only seems to happen with my external drive plugged in and playing any ps5 game.
I keep getting a “green screen” of death, except it only happens when I get to the main menu of the ps5. It will never happen when I am selecting which user to go on. Weird
Is there a work around? Like if I got an External drive ( brand new ) and get it formatted to ps5. Can I still put ps4 games onto the External and play from there or would it be exclusive use of ps5 games on it?
1:51 I need help I get the same screen but it says can not be repaired need to go reformat it again which it wants me to delete everything and I don’t so how can I repair it without formatting it
Bro I’m having this problem where it tells me I can’t repair an I need to format but when I go to the usb extended storage it says I need to connect my extended storage
I bought an eternal 2TB SSD and it was working great on PS5... Until yesterday! My PS5 was running very slow so I powered it off and on again to see if it would resolve the issue, It didn't and my PS5 refused to turn fully back on! Tried all the fixes in safe mode but nothing.. Ended up phoning Sony and told them my problems, They said it was the external SSD that was at fault and they are aware of the issues and hope to resolve in a future firmware update.. Had to do a factory reset with USB flash drive and thankfully PS5 is working again... But just putting this here that there are known problems with external SSD/HHD's.. Hope nobody else has the same issues as me.. and if they do this might help?
I’m having the exact same issue. When you reset the ps5 did it erase all your progress on games ?
@@angelvalencia6951 Yes it reset the console to factory default.. But if you have PlayStation Plus all your saved game data and progress should be saved to the cloud so its easy enough to download to your PS5 and continue where you left off... Hope this helps?
I want to get a external hard drive for the ps5 but a usb one will it do the same thing?
Thanks dude my ps5 kept crashing with my HDD and I was worried my ps5 might have a problem. Glad to hear it’s a fairly universal problem.
Thanks for making this video man! Really informative. I bought a 4TB hard drive last week and I got the black screen of death 2 days later. Before that the console was great so I assumed it was the hard drive but I've been nervous about the console ever since. Glad to have the confirmation that it is to do with the hard drive, I hope Sony either fix this issue with an update or maybe even release a hard drive themselves specifically for the PS5.
Glad to know cause same thing is happening to me.. now I’ve been trying to turn it on and it won’t do that… gotta keep trying tho
Im just confused, my hardrive was working fine and then my power blinked like 3 times over the course of a week and the hardrive had to repair but now it's stuck where the repair screen gets to like 30% then it says it couldn't repair and needs to be reformatted and it does it every time it's disconnected. It also won't let me download certain games. I try to download and it either says error or it goes to queue and has an error or even half way through downloading it has an error. Idk what to do and I don't have the money to buy another rn.
whats up, any update? I just got my PS5 from Stock X - Not sure if I should plug in my Seagate 8TB HDD from the Ps4.. Still confused
Question, this is my first Playstation ever. I purchase an external drive that is not formatted for any system. Will I encounter the same issue. I own no PS4 Games and the drive is brand new. I have not connected it as yet.
Just got my ps5 2 weeks ago and this happened to me. Any word on if there’s any fix or has Sony done anything I’m not aware of?
Has there been a patch for this? My guess is no as I'm experiencing these issues since I started using an external drive for ps4 games.
I’m having an issue stating commented wirelessly to the internet when I have the external HDD connected. First 5 days I had console it worked flawless with my Ps4 games running off internal storage but today I put some Ps4 game onto an external hdd and the console will intermittently disconnect from the internet and not reconnect? Hope Sony patches this problem soon
My external drive is formatted by the PS5 it will not stay connected as a usable drive. It tries to repair it and it says it's not repairable. This is still going on even as late as the beginning of March 2021. I doubt they are going to resolve this issue any time soon.
So the database issue is still not fixed? I bought a WD Black P50 1TB for my PS5 and then heared about this issue. So I am still waiting for the fix to come before using it. I am afraid of crashing my PS5. Good thing is I actually have enough internal space for my most important games. But how long will space be enough?
My ps5 doesnt crash but i get controller connection issues, like my player in game moves in a full 360 or isnt that responses .. etc
So idk if anyone got this but, literally two days after I got my ps5, I plugged in my seagate 2 tb hard drive. Now idk wtf happen to it but now when I boot up my console, it says repair usb drive. Did it every time, and then I had like 9 of my games that were disc that cannot download or copy. I can’t play none of my PS4 games until I get a ssd and reinstall all of em or just uninstall it and reinstall them on my system storage. Anything weird with this?
Forgot to mention, the external HDD had no problems before, (unless lets say the console froze on my PS4 or something). I’m waiting for an ssd update to come out so I can order a 2 or more tb ssd right away.
Mine only does it for certain ps4 games. I downloaded crash and it crashed my console after I tried to play. Then it keeps saying the data is corrupted and to re download but when I do that it says the same thing. It also happened with Arkham Knight. I'm so confused.
I've got two PS5's, one using an old Samsung T5 external USB SSD and the other using a newer Samsung T7 SSD drive. Haven't run into a single storage issue and I've had my drives connected permanently to both PS5s. I've put hundreds of hours into those consoles since launch, only issues I've had is crashing in Cyberpunk, but that's an issue with the game itself, nothing related to storage and all other PS4 games have been pretty solid off the external storage. I've also played a lot of Demon's Souls and MK11 (PS5 version), no issues to report with external storage connected while playing those games.
@@ssdkilla No idea why you felt the need to comment on this 10 months later, but no, I haven't had a single issue with external storage and my drives have been connected 24/7 on both PS5s. I am using high quality SSD storage though (Samsung T5/T7). Not sata-to-usb cables, docking stations or other dodgie solutions as mentioned in this video. I won't run into these issues.
Has anybody been able to used a USB Flash drive for external storage? I bought a 2TB one, but it said that it's not a SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later. I can't use that one. Do SuperSpeed USB Flash drives exist?
This is a problem I got ever since I used it on PS4. Every single day since I bought the disc I've been having this problem. Don't expect Sony to fix this now.
I have a question, I was updating a game on my external hard drive, os4 game, but on my ps5, the update was huge, over 100gs, I had periodically downloaded in 2 days, so 3rd day it was at 80gs out of the 100, I went and turned on my ps5 for 3rd time, and when I plugged in exhd the update was back to 0... what happened?
I've had external storage for my Ps4 games and haven't had any issues for about 6 months. then i log in today and i get a screen saying it can't read my hard drive. i did the self fix and it isn't working. not sure what to do...
Thank you!! I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one, mine just keeps crashing exactly like this with my external hdd. Hopefully a patch comes soon. Thanks for the vid.
Yup and it works perfectly fine when I unplug my external hd. Still a pain in the ass not having all my games
Thanks, dude. I was really worried about it. I though that it was the hdd. Sometimes when I tried to turn on the console, it would crash and turn off. When I turned it back on it saif that it was a connection problem with the hdd. I was really worried.
I just got a wd black hard drive and plugged it into my ps5 and it doesn't show up to format, what should i do
My hard drive was working perfect till one day it just stopped working. The light still goes on to signal it’s on but my ps5 isn’t recognising that an external storage is there at all. Any ideas on what I can do?
Is there a fix yet? My system went into rebuild external data then went to black screen. Had to pull plug to restart hapened twice till I disconnected it. Near sick thinking it was bricked.
It also reads flash drives as two separate drives, and that's fine when you're selecting the drive to play your music from, but when you want to copy your save data, it forces you to choose the container drive rather than the writable drive, and then tells you that the drive is full. Such a mess.
This happens to me I’ll crash on certain games and then it will crash tell me the thing won’t load that says an error has occurred and I can’t go to safe more or whatever it’s called
Do you think getting a new storage device would help at all?
Is this still an issue? I have an 4 TB HDD and and an 4 TB SSD, games lag, skip and stutter, the SSD keeps disconnecting and now needs to be repaired and some games barley load on the HDD and not sure what to do.
Does anyone knows if it's been fixed as of 2/6/21 with the recent software update?
Nope. I'm experiencing issues with mine external hard drive (is the same I used with my ps4 pro) almost formatting
Still an issue but the repair message has only popped up twice for me and I’ve had my ps5 for a month
I’m thinking of getting a external harddrive is wd black still worth getting for my ps5
Nearly evrytime i Boot my ps5 i get the messege to repair my External storage. 2 of 3 trys it sais it cant be fixed please format it again. 3rd try after reboot ps5 it works again. 2 days ago it stoped working now i am formating it again and lost all my PS4 games from storage.
Question: Has this happened to you playing digital-only ps4 games from your hard drive or with disk-based games supplemented by your external harddrive?
Do you have to delete all the games off the storage and then unplug it or just unplug it?
What about samsung t7 many people says its a good way to increase storage is that real or just publicity friend ?
is this still an issue or does the lastest up[date sort it? many thanks.
I used to have this issue with my external ssd on my PS4 pro too, and I’m scared to plug it in my PS5 and have the same issue. Maybe it happened on the pro because it was correctly formatted or something but I’ll wait a little bit before using it on the PS5
I am currently have this problem with my PS5 and WD-Black External hard drive. Need help. Thanks
it is 18th march 2022, and i am on the latest ps5 firmware and this issue STILL isnt fixed. plugging in my ps4 external storage crashes my ps5 and completely shuts it off within a few seconds EACH AND EVERY TIME 😡😡
Is anyone having issues with updates for the games stored on the external storage? If so, is there a solution?
Update 12/9 - Updated with recent firmware but same issue remains for now.
Does the system have this issue when transfering games from ps4 console to ps5 via LAN cable?
update 1/1 still using same external ssd daily since day one, still zero problems, crashes or rebuilds.
It happened to me today. I just unplugged it from the system. I'm not upset but this should be number one priority for Sony
I'm hoping they are on it and they see this video and comments and see people really need this fixed.

Good info. Thanks! My PS5 stopped transferring PS4 games to my external SSD. The PS5 will go through the progress bar and say the game is moving, but nothing seems to have been moved. Oh, and you’re hella handsome too.
Yo is your Share Factory Studio also taking ~30GB storage after you run it just once?
Yeah if you open it once it does take a lot of space to start. Probably with all the assets it gives you.
Has this like bug been patched yet Bc my extended storage doesn’t connect for some reason and it’s been connected before
May 2021 just tried to run a ps4 game from my external after months of having it unplugged. First game I tested ran, second game crashed to menu, third game black screened and then shut off the console. So frustrating.
Me too! It shut my console off after mid transfering a game. I thought I was the only one. This could fuck up my PS5 longterm! and then when trying to repair it said error and it wouldn't recognize it.
This is two years old and my ps5 is doing exactly what you shared. I purchased the ps5 external hard drive from Best Buy . I plugged it in and ever since that day my ps5 keeps crashing mid game. I unplug it and it works perfectly fine.
Same I am using my hard drive from my ps4 on my new ps5 and when I play games or load apps from the usb drive it turns off my ps5 immediately
Anyone have this issue. Where you have an external plugged in and it causing the start up to take longer. It stays on a black screen for a long time or you unplug it and works again
I had the same issue also. At first I just unplugged it altogether but I still wanted to use my external drive. I reformatted it on my computer (which erased everything) and then reconnected it again. Haven’t had any problems since reformatted it. One problem I did have was when I connected it to my computer it didn’t assign it a drive letter at first, but I was able to solve that.
Just hooked up my external 4tb drive I have for my ps4 to the ps5 and yeah it was a no go. Loaded pubg and it was stuttering during the cinematics. Then I tried loading the ps5 version of madden from the internal hard drive and the system crashed and wouldn't turn on until I unplugged the external hd. Works fine after I unplugged the external. This is pretty disappointing. 3.4 tb worth of games that are unplayable.
Sorry I’m confused so I can’t download ps5 games to the SSD? I’m trying to expand my memory on ps5 for ps5 games I will be downloading (I have digital ps5)
I have a 4tb external hard drive for PS5 to play PS4 games and ps5 says it's maxed out which is Impossible is there a way to reformat the drive?
Unfortunately,
Even after last software update I still have those problems with the external storage .. Does anyone have it?
Some people said you MUST format your external hard drive because you used it on ps4 .. True?
I have 2 PS5's in the house, mine and my son's, we literally unplugged our 2 8TB seagate external hard drives from our PS4 Pro, to the PS5's and other than the library showing that 4 to 5 games showing 99% downloaded (they were 100% on our ps4p) worked perfectly fine. As for unfinished downloaded games, the simple fix was to start playing them. Once you exit, it showed 100% complete download. We been running to 2 Seagate 8TB drives for a few weeks now, so far so good. I'll report back if anything drastically changed. Great video, had no idea this was even a thing.
Have you also played PS5 games while having it plugged in? Something like Spider-Man Miles Morales
@@BWOne Yes, Miles, Spiderman Remastered, COD Cold War, Warframe, The Pathless, Bugsnax, Astros playroom, Borderlands 3 and No Man's Sky, all the PS5 versions on the Internal SSD. is there any way to fix it? or yet??
I have the WD Black D10 8TB drive for my PS5, and while transfer speeds and loading are solid, the drive takes a good 3-5 minutes to boot up after starting up the console. This only started happening a couple months back right after a firmware update. Anyone else notice this? I reformatted to exFat and redownloaded all of my content, but the issue persists.
I have the digital version of the PS5 so everytime I play like some sort of game it turns my whole screen black and then I can't turn it back on and then a minute later I can turn it on and it says you didn't turn the PlayStation off correctly which I think is weird because it happens to me every time when I'm trying to play a game it just kicks me out and I can't play my game again

To give a better understanding. This is for external USB storage to be able to play PS4 games. This is supported at launch for the PS5 via this link.

What is not supported yet is expanding internal storage via PCIe SSD which supports PS5 games (and PS4) there is no update for this feature yet which will come down later.
