For cooling of the SSD it doesn't appear to make much difference either way. For the cooling of the system, leaving the bay open may have a negative impact. This is because despite how it looks, there is apparently a negative pressure circulation in the bay. Which depends on the door being shut. High speed air transport more heat than slowly rising air.

Excellent points! I saw a guy make a video and he never put the washer back in he forgot it. I really like how you show that you vertically lift up the SSD so it plugs in properly - very good points yes very good
One more thing. Insert the SSD at a ±30° angle. Otherwise you'll damage the M.2 slot. Using the M.2 SSD without the cover won't negatively impact the performance at all. I've tested with and without the cover and there's no difference. The thermals are slightly better without the cover. I do recommend to use a proper heatsink preferably a copper one.
Thanks for this. I’ve just installed the Sabrent Rocket Heatsink and it’s a beast. Fired up the PS5 and it works. Of course, I can’t put the SSD cover in with it and that was my question if it mattered or not or if nit would cause damage.
It doesn't look like there is any ventilation in that compartment so putting the metal cover back on turns it into a mini oven and will likely destroy (ok..lower performance) a drive with a heatsink.
All Cooper is not good becouse it have slover transfer than aluminium. The best is Cooper on downside and aluminium od upside to better transfer outside from heatsink.
0:36 Can you talk more about this step? The heatsinks come with thermal stickers to be attached to the SSD chips, first removing the identification sticker that is glued, as it is not thermal. Proceed?
I read an article that claims you should leave the cover off of the SSD after installing, it makes a difference of 5°C. The author used probes in 3 different spots and made sure the SSD was under a lot of strain. In that same article they stated you don't necessarily need a heat sink, especially if you're leaving the cover off. I noticed the cover on my WD BLACK SN850 was pretty warm to the touch, so I took the cover off and felt the SSD. It was really warm. I waited a few minutes after taking the cover off and touched it again, it wasn't nearly as hot. I'd agree with the article that the cover traps heat, so I leave it off. There's also a flashing yellow light on the SSD, I've reached out to WD to see if it's programmable on the PS5 cause I'd rather have it flashing purple. I have clear black plates on my PS5. I'm waiting on an answer. I do have a heat sink on my SSD, so I can't see if that makes much of a difference, but I tend to believe the author of that article. He was right about leaving the cover off.
Don't worry too much, your NVME has operating temperatures between 0 to 70 degrees celcius and normally it should also have thermal throttling which will slow it down so it doesn't need to run as hard and get hot. So yes your SSD will be warm to the touch but if its not burning you, its probably in the spec range. Does PS5 have any temp monitoring? Might be good to have a little peak at the temps, I check mine on PC regularly.
The only reason they advise to put the cover back is because without it, the dust from the the exhaust fan can get into the ssd area. As its directly under the same cover. Otherwise, you indeed get a lot of heat reduction removing it. The heat reduction without the cover isnt necessary if you use a heat sink, but if not, you should definitely remove the cover and clean it from dust for time to time.
I've personally just invested into a $10 ssd cover that includes shaped holes and a dust cover in it. It let's my ssd get the assisted ventilation from the fan while also preventing dust from getting into the ssd slot.
Awesome details and coverage. But still wish your vid titles described the content specifically. You have sooo many good ones and it’s hard to know which generic title the info is hidden behind. PS: would love links to the specific heat sink you used. I didn’t trust my guesswork buying any old heat sink.
SSD’s, like the 980 Pro, are built to throttle slightly when overheating. It will also never overheat when just playing a game because all it’s doing is “reads” from the drive. The whole heatsink necessity is marketing
FYI if you wanna save a extra $100 buy a ssd without a heat sink and buy a $10 heat sink it dos the exact same job as a sdd with a attached heat sink that they are charging a extra $100 for something you can do yourself for $10. Do follow instruction and tutorials on how to install heat sinks to ssd's.
But wait a sec... Doesn't makes more sense not putting back the cover? Doesn't make it more cooling or heat compact? I always think that leaving that cover behind makes more sense because the heatsink have space to for the heat waves to get out better to the fan and the ps5 ventilation covers
Sony states that the NVMe drive that you will use in your PS5 requires effective heat dissipation, meaning that it has to have a heat sink attached to it. So you can either get a drive that already has a heat sink or save some money by buying a normal NVMe drive and a third-party heat sink and install it on your own.
For people wondering what SSD to get to make it easy get the Seagate firecuda 530, WD sn850 or the Gigabyte aorus 7000s all come with a OEM heatsink and have great performance and I listed highest to lowest price. I went sn850 myself. I've seen some people report throttling or slower read speeds from the 980 pro but I can't confirm plus you need to add a heatsink to that SSD which yea easy it's just another step to avoid.
I bought the firecuda 530 and my PS5 would not recognize it. I spent 2 hours frustrated putting it in and taking it out multiple times with no luck. I watched tons of videos where everybody keeps saying insert at some weird angle but when trying that it didnt work either. I asked the company to send me another one in case it was defective. But that would be weird because it was brand new from staples. I hope this next one works because i got COD modern warfare 3 and i can't play it until installing an ssd smh
@@jayonlineslotz send it back and get the WD sn850x or 850p with the heatsink, think they're the same drive except one has a PS logo mine works great. Not a fan of Seagate myself anyway
@@KParks Yeah i went with fire cuda because it was on sale $40 for 1tb. I have seen others use it with no problem so i don't know why mine won't connect with it. If this next one doesn't work then i'll go with a different one
Ssd runs much cooler without that small metal plate. I've tested it personally. I'm using 980pro with heatsink without top plate. Also, my friend is using ssd without heatsink and top cover for more than a year now with 0 issues.
Finally got myself an extra SSD and I’m FURIOUS that the screw is solidly stuck in place. I’ve tried multiple drivers (starting with PH1 of course) and it won’t budge and is starting to strip. Normally I don’t get tilted over things, but this is really stressing me out.
This is really useful for me because I am getting the ps5 next month for Christmas I am so freaking excited i hope plans don't change and I might get a ssd in the next few days beforehand I like to get stuff before I get a new console so when I get the console I can just get more storage for more games
Just saying don't forget to install the expansion cover doesn't explain what it's purpose is it looks the way it's designed that it's not necessary as far as providing any heat dissipation or flow of air since it is in a separate compartment to the rest of the unit
Sony doesn't specify an exact reason in the instructions. But my speculation is it's designed to protect your SSD and internal connectors from dust accumulation. The expansion bay is right next to the intake vents & that area is actually very prone to excessive dust build up. Hope this is helpful
@@JohnGlasscock A Sony engineer confirmed the plate is needed for pressurized air flow. The system pushes air through the compartment with the lid closed and cools it better. There are small holes in the comparment for this reason.
Thank you so much, I was having trouble installing my SSD this was the first video I found to show how the teeth should properly line up. Greatly appreciate it.
I have a PS5, was lucky enough to get one at launch & realise expanding the storage will be required in the future but as of now i am fine the internal SSD for gaming & my external HDDs for storage. When the SSDs come down in price in the next 6-12 months i will know how to install, nice clear & easy to understand instructions, keep up the good work.
I will admit that the xbox for memory is way easier. But people are acting like you need a masters degree in engineering to be able to install these nvm drives
Easier, yes. More expensive, especially in the long term, also yes. I doubt the prices for the XBox storage will ever drop significantly, while 2 years from now I bet you'll pay under $150/TB, and 4 years from now maybe under $100. Maybe.
There is 2 small holes inside the bay for airflow, also it's close to the fan inside the PS5 so it will take the hot air out from there, Sony engineering himself say need to set the cover on, if you off the cover dust will be a problem later and will cause heating issues
other videos i watched didnt have the same model of ps5 as me which made adding the spacer difficult but you mentioned that it has to be under which made it easier for me to understand and now i know my ps5 wont break thank you for this video
Quick questions: I purchased that SSD and heatsink. The heatsink came with two thermal pads, one that was 0.5mm thick and one that was 1mm thick. The directions said to attach the 0.5mm pad on the bottom and the 1mm pad on top. My problem was that made it slightly too thick and it prevented me from getting the two clamps to lock the heatsink into place. I ended up removing the 1mm pad and using the rest of the thinner 0.5mm pad instead. That gave me enough clearance the get the clamps to lock into place. My questions: 1) Will using the thinner thermal pad for both sides be a problem for the SSD to function properly without overheating? 2) The thinner pad that I placed on top was in two pieces. When I applied the pads to the surface of the SSD, there is a gap of approximately a half inch between them. Will this be a problem for the SSD to function properly in the PS5 without overheating?
@@GalaxyTaco95 it’s an excellent drive and decently priced I don’t know why more people don’t recommend it it’s also faster than the 980 pro and the SN850
I didn’t know about the spacer isn’t supposed to be on top but instead it goes underneath the ssd then you screw it back on 😅 if I didn’t watch this video I wouldn’t have known 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ended up buying my own because I did try the ones that came with it but I guess I needed to flip it lol. Either way my spacer was a Motherboard spacer and obviously screws right into the PlayStation for a tight firm grip. The one that came with the PS has the screw to tighten the spacer in, mines you turn the spacer and tightens without the screw. Then I put my SSD on top of the spacer and tightened the heatsink with the screw that goes in the spacer. Both ways work.
@Steven Shearer I bought the SN850 2TB ssd with heat sink when it was first launched during covid, costs more than my PS5 at the time lol no regrets 🤷🏻♂️
I've got a PS5 Slim, but it's similar. This helped when I installed it the first time and didn't get a format message. It's quite particular about the angle. Thankfully it worked the second time!
Looking at mine, the expanable storage has two small slits under the cover (on the side near the big fan) for air flow from the out side the cover. It's not air tight by any means. In fact that looks to be the only way the drive is getting any air. Seems like you could just run with cover off for much better cooling. As the 2 slits already using outside air.
I'm super late to getting this video on my feed, but I actually replaced the cover with one off Amazon with hexagonal ventilation. Between the (2-pack) SSD heatsink and the cover, it cost me like $20 on Amazon and got to my house next day.
Thank you much appreciated. I think many PS5owners are going to damage their ssds or systems if they don't follow these instructions to the letter. I liked the placement of this SSD it's the the best way I've seen after many I've come across

@@KParks I’ll wait. I personally won’t waste the time to just add 1tb I want at least 2, preferably 4. I can wait because I’ve got an external now and 1gb download speed so I can delete and download in minutes.

Ammo has been the same because of primers but it’s coming back. SSD has been way overpriced too long but I can wait.
A slim heat sink is not actually recommended. A thicker one is better because it allows for increased air flow. Also, leaving the cover off isn’t a big deal and won’t harm the system in any way, shape or form.
Any of the nvme drives, the sticker acts as a heat sink. You’re using those “ek” aftermarket nvme heat sinks. They recommend removing any stickers so their heat transfer pads sit directly on the nand.

Maybe so but at least the PS5 has multiple options for expandable SSD and not just a single 1tb option. Maybe down the road Microsoft will come up with more options for Xbox. But until then Xbox only has one 1tb option. Ps5 for the win in that options category.

Why am I seeing these installation videos before the beta software is out? You are supposed to have the beta software (or the next production release, which hasn’t been released yet) installed BEFORE you install the new memory.
I'd go firecuda 530 or WD sn850 both with oem heatsink if you want something slightly cheaper gigabyte aorus 7000s with oem heatsink. I went with the sn850 2tb bought from the WD store. I've seen a couple people report slower but usable speed from the 980 pro.
I'm not savvy with this kinda thing but my friend put a new one in his PS5 and honestly I think it outperforms the stock SSD. We did a time test and games were loading 4-10 seconds faster (case by case) it's amazing that now anything over 20 seconds loading is a long time lol.
So there is an expansion slot but you have to do all this to get to it. Very handy indeed. Couldn't they have just made a slot on the outside, or just a little removable cover right where the ssd goes in? Just looking at this tells me id need somebody to do this for me, orid just get an external.

It doesn't look like there is any ventilation in that compartment so putting the metal cover back on turns it into a mini oven and will likely destroy (ok..lower performance) a drive with a heatsink.
@@AmigaOmega then why would Sony recommend putting the cover back on?
All Cooper is not good becouse it have slover transfer than aluminium. The best is Cooper on downside and aluminium od upside to better transfer outside from heatsink.
@@richie259 Why indeed! Maybe it's subject to change. No heatsink, it's probably ok to put back on, but heatsinks work by having air move over them.
And was this article from a reputable source? Everyone knows that the Internet is a cesspool of misinformation in general.
Also I see this article did not give a reason WHY you should replace the cover.
I like that heat sink. Do you have a link to where we can get that?
It's EKWB, the worldwide leading brand in watercooling solutions.
Perfect timing to see this, I just got my NVmE today with the heatsink.
Good points. The Sabrent PS5 NVME heatsink takes the place of the cover, so the original cover is not used.
Awesome details and coverage. But still wish your vid titles described the content specifically. You have sooo many good ones and it’s hard to know which generic title the info is hidden behind.
PS: would love links to the specific heat sink you used. I didn’t trust my guesswork buying any old heat sink.
Think it’s this one….
EKWB EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink, Nickel www.amazon.com/dp/B073RH58WN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_CRRKYX1ZAJZHECCD4D6Y
SSD’s, like the 980 Pro, are built to throttle slightly when overheating. It will also never overheat when just playing a game because all it’s doing is “reads” from the drive.
The whole heatsink necessity is marketing
Do you have a link for the heatsink you used?
Where do you find a heat sink enclosure like that one? I like that.
Just did this today, thank you!!
PS5 caps read speed at 5k, so 980 pro with 7k is fine.
What about Add gameaddlink solid state drive 4tb A95 M.2 with heat sink
You can use pliers to very carefully force the first turn. Some really are just super stuck.
@@Farat9622 Thanks for sharing!
@@Farat9622 I don't believe it, I will keep my cover off, it's shown to run cooler

Thank you so much, I was having trouble installing my SSD this was the first video I found to show how the teeth should properly line up. Greatly appreciate it.
also if you get a 2tb ssd it may have nand on both sides, definitely get a double sided heatsink

I have a PS5, was lucky enough to get one at launch & realise expanding the storage will be required in the future but as of now i am fine the internal SSD for gaming & my external HDDs for storage. When the SSDs come down in price in the next 6-12 months i will know how to install, nice clear & easy to understand instructions, keep up the good work.
i got one just now cuz i can still find them at msrp. ssd might go up cuz new mining tech. That's right, new mining tech, so get yours at msrp.
I bought the external black hard drive
I will admit that the xbox for memory is way easier. But people are acting like you need a masters degree in engineering to be able to install these nvm drives
I agree, its not that hard, especially in todays world where video's exist as a tutorial.
Easier, yes. More expensive, especially in the long term, also yes. I doubt the prices for the XBox storage will ever drop significantly, while 2 years from now I bet you'll pay under $150/TB, and 4 years from now maybe under $100. Maybe.
I just got my ssd, I didn't realize I had to install the small screw as well! good thing I found your video in time!
Why does the cover need to be reinstalled?? Won’t it just trap heat?
I don't think so. It's in the instructions for a reason
@@JohnGlasscock Thanks for the reply.
@@JohnGlasscock useless reply
There is 2 small holes inside the bay for airflow, also it's close to the fan inside the PS5 so it will take the hot air out from there, Sony engineering himself say need to set the cover on, if you off the cover dust will be a problem later and will cause heating issues
Negative pressure help the air circulate better than an open cover.
other videos i watched didnt have the same model of ps5 as me which made adding the spacer difficult but you mentioned that it has to be under which made it easier for me to understand and now i know my ps5 wont break thank you for this video
Quick questions:
I purchased that SSD and heatsink. My questions:
1) Will using the thinner thermal pad for both sides be a problem for the SSD to function properly without overheating?
2) The thinner pad that I placed on top was in two pieces. When I applied the pads to the surface of the SSD, there is a gap of approximately a half inch between them. Will this be a problem for the SSD to function properly in the PS5 without overheating?
Who
what is the heat sink called
My work pretty much requires me to watch videos like these. So worth it
I’ve been using the Aorus 7000S 2TB works flawlessly and fits perfectly

@@GalaxyTaco95 it’s an excellent drive and decently priced I don’t know why more people don’t recommend it it’s also faster than the 980 pro and the SN850

I didn’t know about the spacer isn’t supposed to be on top but instead it goes underneath the ssd then you screw it back on 😅 if I didn’t watch this video I wouldn’t have known 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Me 2! After I watched the video I looked at my ps5 and was like I guess I have to do you right lol.
Thank you! Got mine today and of course installed the washer on top, saw your video hours later and corrected it! Cheers!
Thank you much appreciated. I think many PS5owners are going to damage their ssds or systems if they don't follow these instructions to the letter. I liked the placement of this SSD it's the the best way I've seen after many I've come across

That memory needs to come down in price before I buy it, damn expensive right now.
Sabrent rocket 4 plus has a sell 179.99 for 1TB or 2TB for 359 and then buy a NANKUI heat sink for 5.99 pretty cheap
Gigabyte aorus 7000s 1tb with heat sink is $199 I'd hate to break it to you but it's going to be a long time before prices drop to the point of making it worth the wait. I went with the sn850 myself. No point waiting 2 years to save like a extra 20$ if you think you need the space go ahead and grab one.
@@KParks I’ll wait. I personally won’t waste the time to just add 1tb I want at least 2, preferably 4. I can wait because I’ve got an external now and 1gb download speed so I can delete and download in minutes.
@@BoslagerBBQ makes sense. for alot of people it doesn't even at 2tb I'd jump in now 4tb is gonna be insane for a long time.
@@KParks It might be a year or so but the price will drop. It’s just the pandemic driving price right now just like the lack of PS5’s. They don’t have the parts or they are stockpiling them.
This Console has ability to use M.2 SSD just like Computer
yaa Since PS4 and PS5 are exactly that a PC running different OS thats why PS4 games run Natively on PS5
Any of the nvme drives, the sticker acts as a heat sink. You’re using those “ek” aftermarket nvme heat sinks. They recommend removing any stickers so their heat transfer pads sit directly on the nand.
I got the Samsung 980 pro and on the box it says 980 pro with heatsink. Does this mean I’m good and can proceed installing? Or should I still buy a desperate heatsink?
I love PlayStation, but the SSD installation on PS5 is alittle complicated.
XBOX definitely has the better approach in this case.
Maybe so but at least the PS5 has multiple options for expandable SSD and not just a single 1tb option. Maybe down the road Microsoft will come up with more options for Xbox. But until then Xbox only has one 1tb option. Ps5 for the win in that options category.
thank you for making this video cause i would most definitely have made those 2 first mistakes.
wow since I've never opened the expansion bay yet I had no idea there was a spacer in place for ssd which also means I really didn't pay attention that well to official breakdown video of PS5 I feel bad. so this video helped in actually showing me what I didn't know about prior. thanks! can't wait for update to come out cause Lord knows I need that extra gb space. 🙁
