      Tabletop Minions so on the necromunda.com web pagethere is a section for legacy gangs that says the rules are "coming soon" as a download so I'm hoping I'll be able to roll out my Orlocks on day one so I can crush my wife's Delaqurs.

      Also, if you take a look through the rule book they mention another rule book that has not officially been announced. The rumors that I have been hearing hint at a rule book coming in the spring time that is very much like the original Necromunda rules.

    I still remember playing Necrumunda using some Fisher Price Sesame Street buildings as my terrain with my buddies in the 90s/early 2000s. It was hilarious fighting over Hooper's Store with our gangs, and I had a blast with it.

    Of course it`s a must get, (original) Necromunda for me is, together with Blood Bowl, perhaps the best GW ever released. These are the games that make you "bond" with your figures, as every one gets his own tale instead of "Guardsman umpfteenth thousand gets shot down"

    The special ability cards are sold separately however. And here in NZ, that's another NZD$54.00 to get 20 playing cards for each of the Escher and Goliath gangs. Which is pretty outrageous.

    I think they missed out on the chance to make a special game with cool terrain in the box. that aspect was something that fascinated me about that game. you didn't need a "nerd layer" to build a whole gaming table you could play it everywhere and put it back in the box. I wish they would have done that again. I hate it when you have to store your terrain everywhere

    • @ptitbass
      @ptitbass 6 років тому +2

      Philipp Niemann yeah a 3d card board terrain would have been cool. I havent been around for the first edition but sometime you dont need something complicated to have fun. I still like the tiles and made it somehow dynamic and more customizable but i easily see a 3d terrain for beginner is what missing here.

    The thing about Gang War that's disappointed a lot of people is that it didn't have the expected rules for the other gangs so that people with old models could use it ahead of the new gang model releases, it also forces you to buy the Underhive box set because the main rules aren't in the supplement and that rule book isn't available seperately.

      if they don't do rules you could pretty much use their old rules since you don't need to worry about cost because they don't have any just give them good intelligence and will. perhaps +1 BS and LD

    • @cjanquart
      @cjanquart 6 років тому +2

      Issue with Arbites (great looking models) is that they're not intended on being run in a campaign; they're intended to be used in GM-run or some other story theme games. They got "mission appropriate" gear (like say silencers for games with a stealth mechanic like "Raid") and they all had great gear. We had a player (guy was a jerk) that insisted on running one and the GM agreed....then the rest of us formed a temporary truce and curb-stomped the hell out of his gang; ended up capturing a few and acquiring those nice shotguns (and even better ammo).
      Sypyers, no argument there...while their advancements were really nifty, they just died like dogs in our campaign and we said you had to get 200exp to fullfil their vow (none of this survive or kill a couple guys nonsense).

    • @michaelhoule2134
      @michaelhoule2134 6 років тому

      Yeah, I really love the old GW Arbites models, I even liked the Hive Primarus Enforcers... I would love to run a arbites gang hell its probley the only way I would play New-cromonda.
      Another question, did you gang up on him because he was "that effing guy" or did you gang up on him because he wanted to play the awesome looking Enforcer models?

    • @chrisjanquart7550
      @chrisjanquart7550 6 років тому +2

      Michael Houle Yep, he was "That guy"; GM let him run them and he did have the old Arbite models painted. However he complained when we captured a couple of his people and stole their gear (namely those executioner rounds); said gangers can't use those but last time I checked shotguns were basic weapons on the trading post.

    According to a video Warhammer community released recently, they felt the card terrain with the bulkheads 'wasn't the way to go', and that it wouldn't fit in with the current, really nice terrain they've made as of late. I can't disagree with that, as the new terrain IS nice, and it's not like they'e included card terrain in most of the boxed sets like they used too (IGNORE THE BOXES THEY GIVE YOU THAT ARE PRINTED TO LOOK LIKE BUILDINGS!!). But, I think they should have done them anyway. The people who really didn't like them wouldn't have to use them. They could make a set without them and be just fine. Conversely, if they did have the buildings similar to the old sets, it would make the game much more accessible for new players, and they would enjoy it more. I was able to store the entire buildings set for the base game, and the expansion in the base game's box, and setting the whole thing up took less than ten minutes (though it took me about 15min when I tried it recently, but it's been 20 years since I've used it, and took me a little longer to remember what went where, and I'm also old now). I think the majority of people would have just enjoyed having the extra terrain, and I think it would have inspired them to buy more as well.

    Thank you for the additional information. I really liked Shadow War: Armageddon and being able to use the miniatures I already had. Being able to now buy the 'basic starter" box for Necromunda, have a play in the hive with the tiles (and maybe link them up with Assassinorum: Execution Force?) and then use it as a base slum level with the Adeptus Mechanicus terrain on top for a gang war sounds awesome. :D

  • @JacobMacabre

    Damn, this was more informative than the entire GW's advertising campaign for Necromunda, haha! Thanks! :D

  • @ModernSynthesist
    @ModernSynthesist 6 років тому +1

    Fun fact: Shadow War Armageddon was an afterthought, thrown into the terrain box to make it slightly more palatable since, historically, terrain sells horribly. The rules included Orks, Scouts, and Imp Guard. The PDF expanding it to the other forces was the last after thought, thrown together by two guys at HQ.
    And then it exploded, and everyone loved it. It wasn't made clear to me if Necromunda was already in the works at that point, but hinted it was, and maybe it was moved up the chain when Shadow War succeeded.
    So if anyone is thinking GDub tried to set us up releasing them both in the same year, that's not exactly what happened.

    I can see the critisism that old necromunda had all the 3d rules and campaign stuff in the main box, but on the other hand, it looks like you are getting a lot more detail and options figure wise with the new set. I also think, in my limited experience (I had a little go at Speil this year) that the rules have changed more than Uncle Atom suggests in this vid. The main change to me is that you only get to move/shoot one figure before your opponant gets to activate one of their gangers in response. It's not like 40k or Shadow War/Old necromunda where you get to move and shoot your entire force on your go. That changes the tactics in a large way straight away. As far as I could tell, there is much more granularity in the detail of things like injury mechanics and character progression. Certainly with the campaign book, it seems like you could play it much closer to an RPG than the old necromunda. I never played old necromunda, but I have shadow war and I'll probably play that more than 8th edition 40k because a skirmish game with 5-10 models a side makes it much more likely that I'll finish painting several kill teams while looking after family and other adult life responsibilities. I'm definitly considering picking up Underhive as well - the plastic obsticles and barriers will work equally well in Shadow War, and I bet someone will come up with some stats to use gangers in SWA - even if it's not GW themselves

  • @SeniorCoxon
    @SeniorCoxon 6 років тому +39

    Have to disagree, the old box set was super easy to get into. Push fit gangers, push fit terrain with the red rulers for whipping people with and quick play sheets all made it very easy to pop out the box and get going! Also three cool books with some great artwork makes this look kind of stingy.

    Really interesting take. Good to see someone talking about it from the perspective of being beginner-friendly. On top of it all, too, the tiles sound like they could be a refreshing take on the Necromunda feel. I'm dead keen to give them a shot and see how it plays, if it's more close and claustrophobic than the old-school teetering walkways and such - not that I won't haul out the old scenery for that, too!

    They did do the same thing with the release of the new Blood Bowl. At over $100 it's hard to call it a starter game, but that's really what the initial box is for both games. It gives you the basic rules and two teams or gangs to play with. The first expansion book released at launch includes advanced rules and the campaign rules. So if you just want to pick up and play you can just go with the box set. For those who want the full experience you'll need the add on book as well. And as before, I wish they had just included the add on book with the box. I know with Blood Bowl it was hard to get ahold of that in my area. I didn't get it until about 3 months after the game had released, and we were halfway through a league at that time. Only one person in the league actually had a copy of the book with the rules for league play.
    I'm just glad that game is coming back as an old school gamer and Necromunda player. For the simple reason that more people will be playing the game again. I still have the old rule book and a gang but I was only one of a small handful of people in my area who did, so we never played much and it was always the same 3-4 people. The new release has a lot of people excited for it though, much like the Blood Bowl re-release had.

  • @Higruth
    @Higruth 6 років тому

    I'd also like to point out that the actual giant necromunda box is mostly not meant for someone to buy on their own, since it has two starting armies. If every player bought their own main box the amount of terrain tiles and excess goliath and escher minis would be pretty high. For example in my local gaming group (of about 10 people playing all sorts of tabletops) there are two necromunda main box sets, the minis were split between the guys who bought the sets, the books are usable for everyone, and others (like me for example) buy our armies seperately. Especially since the new gangs are introduced with new rulebook expansions it works really well, since now that I'm buying orlocks we're also expanding our rulebase with gang war 2, and other players don't necessarily need to buy the book unless they really want to.

    How do those tiles compare to the ones in DW: Overkill? Do you think they'd be compatible? I ask because I liked the mechanics in Overkill, and I'd love to get more mileage out of the box. Also, do you think the the different Gang sprues would be good conversion fodder for things like Guard, Inquisition, or R&H?

    Great vid, uncle A. I am definitely a subscriber now :-) One question: I have the old Necromunda and 4 whole gangs of miniatures from back in the day (plus original terrain, selfmade terrain and templates and stuff). Somehow though, I have lost the rulebook - would it make sense for me to (only) purchase the Gang Wars supplement, and use the old terrain and models for that kind of 3D-stuff. My main concern is that in the new edition of the game the gang members have names (and there aren't Heavies any more, but Champions as far as I read in WD, but they can (easily?) be used as such) - but would it be feasible from using just the Gang Wars supplement to create gangs from the different houses? Or do you need gang member cards and stuff like that from the main box and further miniature supplements? Please tell me what you think :-)

    Worth mentioning is that the old necromunda used the then 40K rules. So that made stepping into 40K or necromunda easy and you had a strong player base. All that was added were the rules of pinning and 3D terrain rules. What GW SHOULD have done (IMO) is to use the 8th edition 40K rules and not regurgitate an ancient rules set. I was somewhat interested in this but as I still have all the old stuff, including massive amounts of terrain, means I can probably just show up with my old gangers and have at it, and not worry about buying this. Saved me $150. Thanks.

    I have been a hardcore necromunda player since way back in 96 when I played a demo game at my first convention. I already preordered two core boxes and can't wait to get my hands on the new models. The only thing that I am a little sad about is that they did not give stats for the other house gang in the Gang War book. When they rereleased Blood Bowl last year the Season One expansion book gave stats for many of the "Legacy Teams", even though there were no new models for them yet, and it gave people who had all the old teams the ability to bring them out. I think if they release the gang rules one at a time each quarter it has the potential to alienate loyal players who want to play their Van Saars or Orlock. Those players might have to wait a whole year to get their gang rules and just say forget it.

    Great video I watched it before I bought the new Necromunda and it was very helpful.
    I've always preferred the skirmish games like Necromunda and Mordheim to the core games in GW's catalogue mostly for the ease of making a warband/gang on a budget and I like how the equipment and your gang's abilities aren't always reliable. I picked up the new Necromunda because sadly the games store I grew up going to is closing (Rockheads) and the box was on sale. I agree with a lot of your points and I know that this video is 3 years old now but as the game has had a few additions and expansions I think I may have some other things that are worth considering when picking this game up.
    First thing's first, they got rid of the Scavvies... I was heartbroken! How could GW kill my favorite gang?
    ....but seriously.
    I'd say you covered it a bit with mentioning that you'd need to get the Gang Warfare expansion book to play the 3D style that the original version of Necromunda is known being a bit of a headache. It seems that with every new gang or new campaign scenario they have to release a book with rules to play what you want to play. I am a little disappointed that for me to run some Genestealer Cultists (Scavvie stand ins) I have to have the Rule Book, Gang Warfare book, and the Book of Ruin. That's a lot of flipping around between books to run a gang! And the equipment list is spread over the place between these three books. I'm not an overly nostalgic guy but I really miss the days of having all the pertinent information in one book and with easy to read charts all in one place. So I'd say that if anyone is looking at picking this up they should maybe do some research about the gangs they might want to play and figure out what books they will need to buy. If you're playing Escher or Goliath the box does that for you so no worries if those are the gangs you plan to run.
    Another thing is that the tactics cards can really add some extra flavor to your gang and can make your opponent decide to change their approach or put them in an unexpected tight spot and I like that a lot. .....but as before if you run a different gang that isn't included in the box you will have to buy tactics cards for your specific gang to achieve that extra personality that you get from the different tactics that your gangs use. So that's another cost on top of everything else.
    New Necromunda is one of those games that you have to do a ton of research before you start but it's well worth it I think.

    I agree with the things you say. The only thing I am concerned about is that. That before you can play a proper game (campaign) with your friends, including al the six original gangs. We probely have to wait untill next year november.
    It is like Blood Bowl. You got two teams in the box. Every two month they bring a new team. All teams aren't fully playable. Because for example humans are missing blitzers. For necromunda that is the same. There are no juves and only two gangs to choose from...

    My only wish with this stuff is that they’d release all gangs along with with the base game. Now it feels like it’s going to be months before I get the actual gang I want, but still, super excited to be playing necromunda again after 20 years or so.

      GW are on record as saying shadow war was a test to see if re-releasing necromunda would be a good idea. They were worked on concurrently, but obviously shadow war was a lot quicker to put together because there were no new models to make.

      My best friend is a GW employee and has told me Shadow War was 2 things, a way to release a lot of new terrain and get it to sell and a distraction from the 8th edition announcement with everything that happened with AOS. It was a smoke a mirrors game.
      Munda was originally announced back with Blood bowl as you may recall, it was one of the 4 specialist games that they advised us FW were working on.
      It's totally true With gangs, we will get a new one every quarter according to Community website!
      Super excited about it!

    i definitely want this game, i don't have it in hand, so i could be wrong about some things, but from what i've seen, this is so much more then just necromunda. $150 isn't cheap, it becomes even less appealing if you don't want to play goliath or escher, you can defray a little of the cost by selling the gangs on ebay, but they're likely to be this games version of stormcast and khorne or primaris and plague marines, so the market will be flooded. the scale-ability and variety of play is like getting shadespire, shadow war or path to glory and an updated version of necromunda all in one go, with expansions we could see new gang (with completely new models or rules that allow you to use the 40k model line, pox walkers would make great plague zombies) and concepts that resemble the outlanders rule book, warhammer quest, dark future, gorka morka, gangs of commorragh and the inquisitor game, how much development we see will be based on it's success, but i can see a frame work that will be able to bolt things on with relative ease, while this is necromunda, it looks to be from the same people who worked on the general handbook.
    there's very real potential here, what comes to pass may be quite different, but i thinks it's the best time and way for necromunda to come back, if you think of the houses as key words, the models can be anything you want as long as it has the right weapons (or equivalents) and bases, that scales from a one off games (intro/matched play),to a slightly more advanced version (that takes a step towards narrative play), to original necromunda (heavy narrative), with a potential to expand up to what was the base level skirmish of the original 40k (a dozen or so models, a couple of bikes and a transport vehicle) with tons of little off shoots in between. it's funny, this is a game i've always wanted gw to make, scale-ability, flexibility, with it's own model range, that can also borrow from from it's parent range (40k in this situation) with a huge variety of options for both models and terrain to choose from with an updated operating system, i'm interested in all that, i'm a little surprised (and pleased) necromunda is where they are going to try to put it.

    I played a round of Necromunda:Underhive and I like the 2D board with plastic doors and obstacles. It makes the game much faster. Also Line of sight and cover rules are streamlined very well.
    The game has much attention to the details (rules) as it is. Adding a 3rd dimension would be overwhelming for new players or casual gamers.

New gangs with every new add-on book to expand game even more.

    I like it how I preprder the starter set and more just 1 day before Uncle Atom does this video. I picked up some Shadow War Armageddon scenery for the 3-D element of the game (which the rules for comes separate with the additional supplement 9:52). Lets see if I made the right choice ! I think that for the base set to include some 3-D terrain and a thicker rule book with the campaigns and the 3-D rules may have increased the cost of the game another 60 or so Euros (£55) from the base game being 100 Euros/£92.50 and that may have deterred a few buyers who didn't have the 'must have' nostalgia vibe. "Hook them up on the cheap stuff and take it from there" is probably the GW business practice (totally viable). I managed to pick up Necromunda base set for £60 (around 65 euros) pre-order which I was delighted by.

    Thanks for the vid. My only criticism for the new Necromunda is the same I had for Blood Bowl. I wish they would sell the rules separately. I've wanted to get into Blood Bowl, but didn't want to spend money on a box that had teams that I have no interest in playing. For the new Necromunda, I already have plenty of terrain, mats, and what not, so I just need the rules. Again, I don't want to spend $150+ for rules and 1 gang.

    I kind of hope they do Angelus & Armagedon expansions. The new Necromunda looks promising but the ability to use Elements from core 40k like Genestealer Cult, Inquisitor Retinue, Chaos Cultists, etc was a big plus from Shadow War. (Though limiting Sisters, G.Knights & SM in power armour to Special Ops in support of SM scouts/Inquisitor might be an idea. Similar with some of the Xenos options.)

    • @TaskMaster5
      @TaskMaster5 6 років тому

      No. Not without them doing rules for every single 40k army to be mixed in, which from a narrative would be neat but would not mesh well with the ganger warfare. I'd not want to be fighting Space Marines or Eldar. People would always use them. They'd never buy a gang, as they'd have no reason to.
      But anyway, the armies would all need to be rebalanced to work proper and there's stats that the 40k armies don't use (Intelligence, Agility, etc) so they'd have to have those worked in somehow.

      I can see the good and bad in their decision. The good is, you're not overwhelming new players too much. They can focus on exactly what is in this box, play what is in this box the way it's designed. Then if they feel ready, they can grab the other book. I know if I was new to GW games and a fucking boxed game had TWO rule books, I'd never play it.
      On the bad side, sure. They hit you for another 30 bucks. The box is a steal at 125 anyway, so I don't feel bad about needing to spend 30 on another book...IF the game even takes off in my area (Which I hope it will). Otherwise, playing it out of the box will be more than enough for most my friends.

      Collin Shorette GW games always used to have two Rulebooks, right back to when I started 40K with the second edition boxer. It really wasn't off-putting in the slightest. And it works for FFG games too. One book to get you playing ASAP, and one to cover the more advanced rules. Far better than trying to decipher a 300 page rulebook before you even get started.

      Ralph Hummel i guess the difference is Shadow War use necromunda old rules but lets you use 40k factions with an included 3d terrain in it. The new necromunda is more mainstream and lets you play gangs that will release overtime and offer lots of stuff for less but you play on a board of 9 tiles with some 3d terrain elements such doors and tiles can be switched over. If you want 3d terrain you can but you need an extra supplement "Gang War" rules book.

      Necromunda is beginner friendly but it won't help you at all if you want to start 40k. None of the gangs are in 40k. With Shadow War you can test out something from the actual armies from 40k, but the rules have next to nothing in common with 8th ed.

    • @craigjones7343

      If you want a 40k style/inspired game go with Necromunda. Nero is closer to the 40k 8e ruleset than Shadow War. GW is also expected to fully support Necromunda, where Shadow War will be getting limited support at best. Shadow War on the other hand, uses 40k 2e inspired rules, more akin to the Necromunda 1e rules, and 40k miniatures. If you want to just play 40k, go with 40k and pass on both Necromunda and Shadow War. As I have both SW and Necro, and 2 armies for 40 8e, I suggest getting into Necromunda is you want a skirmish game. NEcromunda has far greater community support and is a much better game.

      I think you're both right. There was no way they could package the sector mechanicus terrain with a starter set in an affordable offering, so they needed to devise a strategy for warming people to the idea.
      I like the compromise they've struck, the quality of both the terrain and the new starter set is awesome, and I'm glad that wasn't compromised to hit a price point.
      I do agree that Gang War should have been in the starter box though. Aside from not gouging the veterans, it would also upsell their lovely terrain, which could probably fetch higher profits than the book sales.

      Has the standard of comprehension gone down among the general population ? The old game had intro scenarios that I found very easy to understand and play within a few minutes after setup. The old game was very popular, so are the old players just smarter ? I don't think so, I find the sales pitch a bit insulting to be honest. Dedication in the game was for 40k at that time, necromunda was smaller in scope and table size to begin with, 4X4 was std size but most played on 3X3 as it was more fun....the really huge setups were reserved for places like gencon or gamesday for the most part. I for one found the games first release easier to access than 40k, as TM's even mentioned, back then you had to make all your terrain....except in necromunda, it was all there and could be setup many different ways. Regardless Im not mad at what they have done, Im just not going to play, I already spend enough on 40k.

      I remember the 40K rules from back in the day, most 1st year law courses were probably more accessible than 2nd ed 40k :)

      Marc Ariss Oh yeah 40k is incredibly difficult to get into. Necromunda I can get my parents to get me for Christmas and have enough of my own money for paint and quite possibly a bit of terrain. 40k I’d need to pay 60$ for the main rules, 40$ for army codex, 85$ for a start collecting box of most likely 15 or less minis, plus paints and likely won’t have anything for terrain. Not to mention my friend would have to also pay that for his army. I found a deal where I can get Necromunda, gang war, and a gang box for each army for 210$ and I can easily ask for that for Christmas, leaving my own 3-400$ for paints, tools, and terrain, not to mention i have more family members who can get me stuff at Christmas. And this covers a sizable gang for my friend too. 40k with Christmas yeah I could do it too but with starting Tyranids extra money for terrain is unlikely (why monstrous creatures and horses so expensive?). Also I have a habit of going over the top to begin with so yeah of course I’m blowing all my money on a board full of terrain pfft am I going to get the December expansion to the game I’m currently playing (yeah but maybe later).

    I ended up picking up SW: Armageddon and to be honest I think it's fantastic, it's just a shame the uptake hasn't been particularly strong due people desiring gangs as opposed to using standard 40k models/squads. I'm with SW:A and as such Necromunda isn't really a priority for me, the only reason I'd pick it up would be to use as a self contained board game, a la Space Hulk.
    SW:A was great value for money and the rules included everything you needed. The supplement "Gang War" should have been in the box for Necromunda, it simply should have been listed under an advanced rules section similar to the 8th Ed. rule book.
    Once I see some of the extra gangs I may end up picking up Necromunda but for now I'll stick with what I have.

      To each their own, however I will never understand the appeal of "gangs" themes.

      FreeFrag.UK I want to try SWA game too. Nekromunda don't even have Orcs and grots.

    I've been thinking for a while now if GW should release some pre-painted models, at least in their starter sets. If they are on this whole easy access gaming style like FFG then it can only be good. Some people want to play without the modelling and painting. Once people get into the game they then expand. Thoughts?

      I get what you're saying, but they probably won't. Since they new models are getting more and more detailed, they will be harder and harder to pre-paint. Ofcourse they could release simpler models, but that's not their goal I imagine. The balance of price and quality has been getting better in my opinion.
      It's an awesome idea, but unfortunatly I don't think they will do much more than pre-coloured plastics.

      They wont because if you prepaint the models you have to show the actual shitty industrially painted in china model on the box instead of the awesome pro-painted model they are trying to sell you. Also they are a hobby company, unlike FFG they sell paints, knifes and all sort of hobby stuff, they would only hurt their own sales to try to compete with someone who has already claimed that market share of pre-painted minis.

      I'm certain the answer is coloured plastic. I've been shown some amazing multicoloured sprues, for a little investment they could produce every model with a 3-4 colour minimum that removes a huge barrier to entry. Even if it hits paint sales to a small degree, they'll make far greater gains in new players, and maybe even veterans that never got their armies painted and who want a cheaper option than commissioning a painter.

      A. Emerson Rodrigues there is that I guess. Be more akin to, what was it 3rd edition 40k? with single pose space marines and orks/gretchin.

    The original was just fine for beginners and I just turned out the big box, made up the very cool terrain and got playing. Might GW just want to sell you a game and then charge you more for the extra terrain? Maybe? Perhaps?

    Hi, I think this new Necromunda, it's a way to get new players in the game world, I'm still thinking if buy it or not, I'm not sure if my family would play it with me, and I'm thinking of get some minis and go play it on my indipendent neighborhood store with some of the guys who use to play there, but I still think that having the game in a box, and no worries for the 3D huge buildings is a good idea
