  • Retromunda! Continuing our Necromunda history series, we've hit the big one - the original release of Necromunda from 1995. In this, I take at look at the boxed set contents and then build The Springsteens again, using the original rules.

    Bad idea to give to kids? It was a bad idea to give to GW staff! A unrelated fact is 4 wippy sticks and some rubber bands make a really powerful bow. In fact so powerful it can fire a wippy stick through at least one box of 40k 3rd ed. Never understood why they were banned from stores in the mid 00’s :)

    • @dezzyboots1323
      @dezzyboots1323 3 роки тому +4

      Strange, I remember getting into 40k around 2012 and the fabled Whippy Sticks were still very much in use. I even knocked over one of the store's Dreadnoughts and while no one minded I still wanted to crawl into a cave and wallow in my embarrassment for the rest of my days.
      Nevertheless I'm glad that the menace of the Whippy Sticks can fade into obscurity as our wounds heal and scars fade....

    I lost track of how many more hours I spent making custom rules versus actually playing the game :)

    One of the best single moments I've had in a wargame was in Necromunda: blasting someone with a shotgun at close range, knocking them back 2 inches… off the top of a building.

    I was 14 years old, whole afternoons in the garage playing 4 at the same time. With its share of betrayals during the games. My game board placed on a table football, itself on a board where my father had put trolley wheels to move it. All those memories... My best years of games.

    Getting levels gets harder the more experienced you are. Juves all start at the bottom, with every easy level-up in reach. While someone like the leader has tougher and meaner basic stats, but starts from a less easy position.
    Juves would grow up and become gangers once they hit a certain number of levels. Then they can start working the gang territory plots and farming cash.
    The big goal for the individual gangers was to reach the upper experience level intact. At that point they were renowned enough to settle down as bosses of an entire settlement, get noticed by the upper house hierarchy and get lifted out of the Underhive. Either way, in practice they leave the game.

    Ah, the memories! I still have my Escher gang, the HellBitches, and my Ratskins. Sold all my other '95-00 era Necromunda stuff when I was poor though. Got back into it with the newest release. Love this little series.

    It kinda feels like the Necromunda campaign system was GW learning from and improving upon the Blood Bowl campaign system, yet never implemented back into BB, lol.

  • @cjanquart

    The shooting gangs (Van Saar and Orlock) were the most prevalent as the shooting and techno skills were most useful. Of course there where wonky instances and you'd get a Juve that'll roll a "choose any skill" and get an Inventor or a ganger with Specialist. Many of the combat skills were either useless or very situational but my opponent quickly/painfully learned to avoid Bill and Ted, twin with a habit of arriving from vents and bushwacking isolated heavies/snipers by using Hurl Opponent to good effect.
    Then my gang got half wiped out (we later learned my opponent doctored his sheet and had optimal skill/stats and weapons) but I played it out; the beauty of the campaign system (as you mentioned) usually had me choosing the scenario (Scavengers or Raids being preferable because credits) and getting the experience bonus, even with a loss. After several games I was back to a normal-sized gang but the survivors became absolute beasts, the real powerhouse being a Juve that ended up with 300some experience, a power fist, bolter, multiple attacks/skillls but still only Leadership 7.

    I remember this release. I had gotten into 40K in late 1993.
    Necromunda allowed a group of use to play together, it was far more accessible than 40K.
    I probably still have a few Orlock models in my "must paint sometime" box. (havent painted in over 10 years)

    Scavvies were absolutely broken in this version of Necromunda. It was possible to see gangs of 30 to 40 Scavs running about, supported by Zombies. Rather than paying upkeep they just ate the least experienced or worst wounded member at the end of the game and bought a new one. Scavs also started with 0xp, so you'd almost always get to choose the missions you played early on, and would 'level up' really fast. Only downside was the book-keeping.

  • @MxMoondoggie

    Necromunda was a lot of fun at the time and much easier to collect and play as a kid compared to 40k. You didn't need to buy a ton of models just to play the game and I really liked the RPG elements and getting to keep gang members that develop over time. We'd become attached to some of them and it'd be a big event if they got killed in battle or died from some other unfortunate event.
    This and Warhammer Quest were the really good games as kids when you could get lost for hours in an adventure and you could get everything you needed to enjoy it for Christmas or a birthday where as 40k required a huge money investment.

    I have watched this short series a number of times, brought back some nice memories. I wondered what you and the others here thought of the new necromunda which I have seen called 4th edition?

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex 2 роки тому +1

      4th edition… i suppose that's counting "confrontation" as 1st, this + outlanders as 2nd, and 3rd would be the specialist games version (that iirc only existed as a "living rulebook", though a small selection of new models was released for it too)?
      fwiw, i quite like the new edition of necromunda. the rules can be a bit wonky (there are a lot of them!), and the situation with rulebooks/expansions/box sets is pointlessly confusing and expensive (afaik only one boxed version of the game included rules for building gangs… which was very limited in scope, and a lot of other odd bits were missing, e.g. certain status effects/conditions, how to use wyrd powers, and all the campaign rules). but the models look great, and the fluff for all the house gangs has been massively expanded upon.

    What is odd to me is that I am sure that the boxart of the Necromunda 1st Edition box was around at least one to two years before the Game was released. I remember it from promotional flyers from GW that came with other boxes or from some pages in the White Dwarf. I may be wrong about that but I am pretty sure!

    Interestingly, gorka morka was supposed to be a expansion originally for necromunda, but it got changed to being orks to avoid harming sales of necromunda as it was so popular. How things might have been different. Looks though like we're getting a vehicle expansion coming this year though...

    5:50 if you will forgive the correction: fleeing units in 2E 40K *do* flee towards cover and *not* towards the boards edge! Rules as written (1993 p.46): "A broken squad will remain where it is and 'hide' at the start of its next turn if it is in cover. If not in cover broken troops will immediately flee 2D6" towards the nearest cover away from any enemy models"
    Let's be honest though, none of us ever actually played 2E 40K rules as written 🤣

    There was an upper human limit on attributes. If your ganger was already as strong as a Necromunda human can be, you got another attribute raised instead.
    The skills are fun. They're a sort of proto-feats that lets the model take special actions or have more options in niche situations.
