This was my first miniatures game. Such a special place in my heart. My dad had been diagnosed with liver disease and basically was slowly dying before my eyes, waiting for a transplant. I lost myself in miniatures and Mordheim was my firm favorite as the dark, apocalyptic tone really mirrored my feelings at the time. It was cathartic, almost therapeutic. Tuomas really changed my life with what he created.
Mordheim hit at the peak of my wargaming. We had a large group playing once a week and the only rule was your models had to be 'correct' by the next time we played. By correct we meant if you changed the guys gear, you had to modify the model to match. Caught an arrow to the face and somehow survived? You'll be modelling an eye patch this week. Everything needed to be done and repainted in the week by the next weekend or you didn't get to play that week. It was crazy hectic and amazing fun.
We did similar with Necromunda. It was great improvising bionics and injuries. The only downside was if the character died and then it became redundant, as it was so far from what the starting model was. I ended up with about 50 Delaques and over 20 hired gun variations. 😅
Me and my closest friends have an ongoing Mordheim campaign for the last couple of years. I must admit I wasn't sure at first, but I definitely fell in love with it!
I still have my Mordheim rulebook and box set. I read the book a dozen times through. I planned out multiple warbands. I never played a single game. THAT is how good Mordheim is.
I played a few games but could never get a full group committed to playing. I still held onto everything I had for it though. Our FLGS was having a sale on old minis a while back and I was able to pick up several original Mordheim pieces. So my current group and I may actually get to try a full campaign.
What's funny is that I'm not that big into tabletop wargaming (I mean, I love the models, and I want to start painting and all that, but the thought of putting together this huge army just doesn't interest me). But...I *love* Mordheim. It saddens me that it's no longer officially supported, because no other skirmish based game comes *close* to how great Mordheim was. It's factions were just *perfect* for the type of game that it wanted to be (though, they did eventually add Orks and Gobbos in a supplement later).
It'd be cool if they still sold the various Mordheim warband kits but the rules are all out there for free now and I don't think it'd be too hard to get enough people together to play and maybe get a campaign going if you're so inclined.
@@mikepearse5196 Eh, I like Necromunda, but for me, it's a bit more about the atmosphere and the fantasy setting. I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoy skirmish wargaming in general, and would probably play Necromunda at some point. But Mordheim is Mordheim.

Yes, and the new skaven miniatures from underwords have the perfect "sewer chic" and rag style look. I hope they can be bought seperate to the big box soon.
Regarding those legends, which evolved around certain Charakters or minis, is one thing. Our gaming group even created their own town Cryer (aka mordheim news) to keep everyone in the loop, and with guest articles also gave players a chance to tell the story from their gangs perspective, which was a good laugh everytime.
My absolute favorite miniatures game ever. When GW killed it off, I followed the alternative settings based off the rules which were also great. Especially those from Tommy Punk's group
Mordheim was a blast. When I was a kid and I was starting with role playing, wargames, etc, the idea of a game where your band could be persistent from one game to the next, changing and evolving was mindblowing. One of the main reasons why I've bought the Cursed City box is beacause it (the setting, the minis..) reminds me of Mordheim a lot. I would absolutely love it if GW launched the game again.
It reminds me of Darkest Dungeons, which is kind of like the Dark souls of turn based combat. Gamer's love a punishing game, it creates memorable moments.
Emil, I love your bigger videos with big builds etc but so glad you came and just talked to us, like you did in the earlier days. I enjoy these just as much...and Mordheim is immense.
Mordheim was my (re-)introduction to the hobby in the early 2000s (after previously only playing Hero Quest as a kid). A co-worker showed me the rules of the game after they had become "free" because GW stopped working on the game. This was around when the new WHF starter box Battle of Skull Pass was introduced, so I went to GW to buy this box solely to use the miniatures for Mordheim. With the "Empire in Flames" expansion, I was even able to use the Orks in Mordheim. One of my most beloved memories was, when my Ork warband (EiF rules) took on a band of Druchii. I only had one crossbow man in the warband, everyone else was melee specced (because.... Orks ;) ). After the game, my one and only crossbow man lost an eye. In the following games of the mini campaign we played, this Ork was the most feared of my whole warband - because he kept critting most of the time, when he shot at a target. Now I am mostly into Frostgrave (go figure ;) ), but Mordheim is still close to my heart. :)
The terrain for Mordhiem/Necromunda allows for so much creativity and such a high level of immersion when compared to AOS/40K. There are just so many that look so amazing. Would love to see your team tackle a build once the Manta Dio is complete!
Mordheim was very accessible, even managed to get a friend to play who could never get into Warhammer due to the financial barriers to entry back when we were 14-15 years old, many great memories!
At a local game con there there was Blood Bowl tournament. A rep from GW had brought a secret prize for that tournament. Ended up winning the tournament with a wood elves team and the secret prize was Mordheim, about two weeks before the game was being officially released. One of my greatest boardgame experiences.
Such a fantastic game, and brilliant, that you brought the legendary Tuomas Pirinen in for an interview. would love to see that interview in it's full length...and yes please build som awesome mordheim gaming tables ;)
Mordheim is the pinnacle of my hobby shop days. We just used mini's from any game, anything that would be appropriate. It was so sick, I remember it so fondly. This local hobbyshop legend named Q who was a small, charismatic and well-spoken bald man, tore through my team of goblins early on, and somehow I proceeded to roll stat buffing save rolls for every one of my dead heroes after that first round, and became a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the campaign thereafter (even though I still did poorly probably because I was tied with the youngest there at like 14 (with my friend jon) going against the strategy of serious adult hobbyists). Seriously great game, props to all those guys. Some amazing memories. I still have my goblins in my closet, easily accessible if I ever manage to find an active game again. I also checked out the mordheim steam game, and though I can't see many people enjoying it, I think anyone like me that played the game when they were younger and just wants another little taste of it, can definitely get some serious enjoyment out of the game. I don't really recommend it for people who don't have the nostalgia though, because something was certainly lost in the translation between the real thing and the digital version.
This is the game that really brought me to the Hobby. My cousin bought the starter box with some friends of his neighbourhood and we bougth some warbands or customized them from regiment boxes (I myself played dwarves treasure hunters and I only bought 1 warrior box 1 engineer and 2 troll slayers ). We had so much fun during two years, almost every weekend building terrains with cardboard and wood and playing campaigns... then one of the guy bought some eldars and we all progressively switched to 40K. So much good memories.
YES! More Mordheim builds, please! I was crushed when, after Warcry was announced, it wasn't as robust as Mordheim... not Mordheim-like, but very Mordheim-lite. I so want to dig in to the community rules. Does anyone have recommendation to fit my buddy's Nighthaunt in to?
Broheim, the archive of all things Mordheim, has a fan-made Warband write-up for the "Night Haint", which is more or less what you're looking for. Although it does have a number of mechanical peculiarities, like requiring you to take a flesh-and-blood model (the "Corpse Master", basically a fantasy version of a 40K Null) and a Mortis Engine into battle just to function. You may want to dispense with those parts of the rules, if you lack the models or just don't appreciate having them imposed on what should be just "a ghost warband".
Mordheim is super special -- you hit every reason why so I won't reiterate, but it occupies more of my brain than I'd like to admit. I love the focus on small scale skirmishes and the atmosphere they created around the city itself. Mordheim itself is as much of a character as the player warbands (akin to how Gormengast is a character in that book series). I'd say that's why the terrain making is as huge of a thing as it is to that corner of the hobby. We need a push for more Mordheim content, get more eyes on the damned city!!
I would love to see some Mordheim content, especially ways to make boards. I'm working on a 15mm version since I have hardly any room at home, perhaps alternate scales could be explored a little ? Would love to know what your take on this would be :) Love the vids - kept me going through some rough times the past few years, always a must watch :)
I havent really heard of Mordheim before. Its so cool to see the history of this, and how it certainly must have influenced tabletop terrain & culture!!
It's a good game but has some real balance issues. Certain factions can field real power-house characters (Possessed, Vampires, etc) and others just have certain pieces of equipment and stats that give them a real advantage (Eshin skaven, iirc). The other factions can really struggle to compete. I'd certainly scavenge some of the rules from Mordheim if I were trying to cobble together a GW-style skirmish game.
Don't complain about Undead, they don't gain experience so late campaign the henchmen are mild sauce. Yes the vampire is powerful, so is an ogre. Garlic is an item you can buy, which is hilarious and affects the vampire. You either buy strong items. Level up strong heroes. Or meet requirements for Chaos Gifts. Anyone can die, no individual carries the team. If you're an idiot, you're punished. If you play carefully, you'll live to see another day. A good Captain is there to make you rich, not keep you safe. Complaining about imbalance in Mordheim is like complaining about Paper beating Rocks and Scissors beating Paper.
@@TomekBlacksMyth Undead don't gain experience, but ghouls are not undead. They are good to begin with, and gain levels to make them even better. You don't want zombies ever, go ghouls all the way.
@@TomekBlacksMyth Well... I once ended up with a Zombie armed with a Hochland Long rifle (Thanks to the Necromancer spell that allowed you to recruit enemy casualties... who were allowed to keep using equipment they had)... Did they ever get round to errata-ing that out? Always felt odd having a Z head-shotting people from the other side of the table.
@@Senbei01 Good question. Zombies have BS0 and cannot use weapons. However the spell from the necromancer states they retain their stat's and weapons. The rules allow you to do exactly what happened, and I would say the intent behind the spell also allows you. They purposefully wanted someone's favourite hero to continue on in the afterlife.
Man Such a nice return to form with this Vid! Great to see you chatting about your passion for the hobby, more content like this!!! Also love manta video cannot wait for the final one
It is pretty awesome, built off the Warhammer Fantasy 6th edition rules set, which was also the best mass battle system GW ever made. 3rd edtion 40k and LotR came out in the same period, it was truly a golden age.
And it's not just nostalgia, I still play those games (both WHFB 6th Edition and LotR) and they hold on wonderfully and inspire me to start new projects! 1999 to 2006 has truly been the golden age for Games Workshop! Today they are improving though, and I hope to see a new golden age for my favourite settings
@@adamln the 6th edition artwork was the best GW ever produced. Also most of people's favourite ever WFB models (e.g the Kislev range, the Bretonnians, the Wood Elves, the Gary Morley High Elves etc.) were made in 6th edition and mid to late 5th edition. Even the most successful AoS designs have been rehashes of models sculpted for 6th edition (e.g. Kroak, Belakor).
I still play 6:ed… play Dark elves. And yes it was the golden age of Warhammer. I hope they will make a new Mordheim. Perhaps when (and if …which i really, really hope!!!) realese Warhammer the Old world).
I would love to play Mordheim. I think that I might try and get my friends into it with the living document. Also i just got a new resin printer so…lets go, manlings!
I love, the almost documentary, style you use. it keeps me interested with different points if understanding. It's a great way to put a lot if information in a concise and short form.
I absolutely loved Mordheim. The reason I loved it was because it came out when I was 15, so on a Wednesday night I got the bus to my local GW store and played a game or two, then for the rest of the week I would be adding details, or painting characters to my warband that showed how they had upgraded since the last battles. As you say it was very accessible, which is important for a 15 year old on a paper round budget!
Mordheim sounds cool, it sounds a little like the battle companies expansion to the middle earth line. I like the sound of bounties in battle companies and might try put it in our next campaign!
Eerie timing, my buddy and I have been talking about Mordheim as of late. I say the entire community flood the space with Mordheim-related content and give GW a reason to revisit such an outstanding title.
6:09 can anyone tell me what mini this elf with the green cloak is? It was the first mini I ever painted when I was 8 or 10 years old and what started me down my hobby journey. I would love to find one but I don’t remember what to search for.
@@GrayArmyGaming i have actually allready seen your video, great content. ive beenn playing on and off scince 99' though . But ive introduced new players to the rules by refering to your video :D
I would recommend checking out some MDF terrain for your Mordheim gaming table needs. That’s what I’ve done. I’ve started a “Mordheim” campaign, but using the Warcry rules, which has worked pretty well.
This is a great vid; well presented and the interview parts are great. Is there a link to the entire Toumas interview anywhere? Minor correction: Space Marine was Epic (literally) and not so much a board game, although it came with card buildings with plastic roofs 😁
For me, Mordheim is pipped by Necromunda MK1. Still remember playing against Orks being Goliaths, Catachans being Orlocks, just easy to get a gang made. I even have a Tau Enforcer gang. Still remember a Escher model, that had become very experienced to the point of having a power fist. One of my Enforcers pulling his pistol out, taking the shot, and removing her from play, only to see her roll a death on the injury chart.
It'd be real nice to see more Mordheim - since I never actually got into playing Warhammer, even though I´ve had several (painted) armies through the years.
The only experience I had playing Mordheim was having a bunch of games using the playtest version of the rules printed over several issues of White Dwarf. The core game kind of passed me by as at the time I didn't have a lot of money and was invested more into my 40k and Necromunda and couldn't stretch to another whole game line. I didn't even get around to picking up the Mordheim core book until it was more or less an unsupported game. But even after saying all that, I still get excited by Mordheim. I think that is a testament to how awesome this game actually was/is, the narrative, the themes, the art, you didn't even have to be playing it at the time to see how amazing this game was. It really is a distillation of what really made Warhammer Fantasy what it really was all tied up in this wonderful little line that trailed away from the core games. And I'll say I still love to watch and follow anything Mordheim related that comes up in the hobby community, so I'd really enjoy to see more video content on the game and future projects. Thanks for another awesome video, take care ;)

Unless you've already found this - Malval table by Simple As War was great inspiration for our board, especially his modular table option. Worth googling!
OMG Finally!!! I just finished making my 4x4 board for Mordheim with the 6 starting warbands. /agree - best GW game to date!!! THE SECOND COMING OF SIGMAR!!! BURN THE WITCHES!!!
It was the rpg element. Plain. Simple. Everything else was executed great. Only issue was town crier exclusive rule additions, that made it difficult to complete the library. I fell out of hobbies shortly after obtaining box set, didn't witness its death, but inside me I will live on. A shame this one isn't still active, good on the community for bringing it back into focus.
It made me so happy to see the elf halfway through as I still have it and repainted it this year when I started getting back into the hobby after Christmas.
Loved Mordheim, still my favourite GW game to date. I especially loved the post game injury/loot roles. In one campaign my captain had two peg legs, one arm, one eye and so on. He had Movement of 1!
My friends and I have been playing a campaign to capture The City for about six months now. I made a small site for updates, homebrew rules and pictures. We get together every week or every couple of weeks, and interest for the game has only grown during this time. I put a map of the campaign on my wall, and we mark victories by attaching band's stickers on it. A lot of fun! Our current status: mordheim-assault.owlbeardm.com/img/map.jpg
Wow! Amazing video. Mordheim had a special place in my gaming heart. Got rid of nearly all of my WHFB and 40K mini’s years ago, but I couldn’t part from my big box of Mordheim scenery, books, town criers, and 8+ warbands….. This video brought back great memories! Thanks!
I player a lot of mordheim when it was release and I love the lore and the development of your warband aspect of the game but rules wise it has some serious flaws and unbalances. On those days it was normal to house rule everything so it wasnt much big of a deal but couldnt give the title of best game because of that. Mordheim disapeared because it was too good to be viable. No business can survive if your costumers pay just 30 dollars and play with that forever.
One thing i love about Mordheim is that even a loss can be a win. About 20 years ago at the local GW store they had a Mordheim campaign runing. I joined mid campaign, and first game was against experienced dwarves that had already collected some XP. I got butchered pretty quick, but because my oponent was so strong i gathered so much XP that it was almost better than if i had won the game. A couple of weeks ago i watched you paint a whole army in 24hrs. Grab all those guys that helped, everyone builds and paints a warband for Mordheim and assemble/ build some terrain. Top it off with playing an all out game of mordheim. Haven't done that with Mordheim yet, but we used to play Warhammer Fantasy King of the hill (the tallest building/ hill is place exactly in the center of the board, and after 5 rounds (or when the game ends) the player with the most miniatures (point value) on that center wins.
The phase after the battle ist a important part, it is very fun to throw some dice and look what fortuna brought you. Or if your guy got taken out of action - what his injuries will be was very exciting. Many of my favorite miniatures are from the mordheim-range too.
I've been playing Mordheim for years, and also we've got new-ish version locally in Poland, called Warheim. It's great to play oldschool mordheim-like game still :D Nice vid Squidmar! It was great time-capsule for me!
Great video. UA-cam need more documentaries like this! Maybe make video like this about Inquisitor? That was one hell of a fun game to play, and even better to paint, since minis where larger (54mm) ;)
I literally learnt what Mordheim was right this second, and now I want an endless stream of Mordheim content!! I'd love to see your squad take in a board and specially customise a ton of AOS and third-party minis to make your own awesome warbands! 😍
I started playing Mordheim in 1999, I was 13. I am now almost 36, and I am more into it than ever. I have MANY resin 3D printed warbands mixed among original Mordheim ones, and have been slowly working on a 3D printed table to replace the current one which is mostly foamcore board. The warbands are just sooo fun to customise!
Part of what made it so amazing was the fact any normal WHF army could be easily converted into a skirmish team. Also, the heroes and henchman growing in experience and building their gear up... man, that was so fun.
Mordheim had so characterful models. The nuns that werent all photomodel pretty like 90% of all female minis are were great. That angry and kinda fat boss nun? *chefs kiss*
Mordheim was my first GW game and I'm still playing it after 23 years (like many many others here in Italy)!!!! It has a special place in my heart! Make a great scenery and let's keep ot alive!
Mordheim! I love the game, and used to play quite a bit back in the day. I do have a couple of warbands I have to still paint, so I may work on that after september :). And I would absolutely LOVE it if you work on a gaming board for Mordheim, for sure.
Thanks for explaining the game so well. You're mention at the end that it was sunset in 2004 explains why it wasn't ever on my radar. I started into the tabletop hobby in 2005 and was never drawn to wargames outside of Star Wars Miniatures anyhow. But given that's why it was rarely seen in stores then also makes sense to me now.
I would love to see a series on you playing a campaign of this. You could model you broken legs and missing hands onto your fav maimed goons. Love this game so much
so inspiring to see that passion and as a lover of roll play and table top I am excited about a game long out of production...How can I get my hands on it?

Mordheim was so great ... After a few games into a campain your warband gets so unique. Would be really cool to see these old memories on UA-cam 😊
Man
Emil, I love your bigger videos with big builds etc but so glad you came and just talked to us, like you did in the earlier days.
I would absolutely love to see some videos making the board, armies, and even batreps of Mordheim.
I would love to see some Mordheim content, especially ways to make boards.
I'm working on a 15mm version since I have hardly any room at home, perhaps alternate scales could be explored a little ? Would love to know what your take on this would be :)
Love the vids - kept me going through some rough times the past few years, always a must watch :)
Miniheim is awesome
@@pingASS_ Miniheim is a thing!? I need to check this out.
Please! Build a Mordheim table! This video got me hooked on Mordheim

Mordheim is the game I used to lure my friends into the miniatures gaming world. So many stories and good times. Im old now lol
Man Such a nice return to form with this Vid! Great to see you chatting about your passion for the hobby, more content like this!!! Also love manta video cannot wait for the final one
This brings me back to when my friends and I played our Mordheim campaigns
Building a Mordheim city could be your next objective one the manta is done :)
Good point!
8:45 The Ogor Mawtribes book contains this exact thing! Page and an half of suggested conversions for various units
Aesthetically 6th ed whfb was a catastrophe - im looking at your Bretonnian donkeyhorse!
@@adamln this is blasphemy.
I still play 6:ed… play Dark elves. And yes it was the golden age of Warhammer. I hope they will make a new Mordheim. Perhaps when (and if …which i really, really hope!!!) realese Warhammer the Old world).
Great video. I'd love to see this kind of vid about all the old, discontinued GW games like man o war, space marine etc.

Definitely would be amazing to see a Mordheim series from you
I absolutely loved Mordheim.
Mordheim is the closest GW got to D&D as a skirmish campaign game. I loved playing it when it came out.
Amazing! I still have all my kit I got back in 2000. Would love to see more of what you guys can come up with for starting Mordheim in 2022
Mordheim sounds cool, it sounds a little like the battle companies expansion to the middle earth line. I like the sound of bounties in battle companies and might try put it in our next campaign!

I would recommend checking out some MDF terrain for your Mordheim gaming table needs. That’s what I’ve done. I’ve started a “Mordheim” campaign, but using the Warcry rules, which has worked pretty well.
I would love to see a series of videos on Mordheim and a gaming table!

This is awesome. Looking forward to this series. Keep up the good work.

Why did GW kill it? The answer is at 11:07.
got this box for christmass in 99 and am in love with this game to this day. so yes, more mordheim videos please
I always wanted to see someone do the imperial zoo of the city of mordheim
I remember playing Blood Bowl using the "official NAF rules", those were some long games but so much fun.

Have you ever played the video game Darkest Dungeon? That seems heavily inspired by Mordheim (after watching your video). Great video dude.
BURN THE WITCHES!!!
great video but you did miss out on Mordheim - Town Cryer for the extra rules and warbands
I played this game so much with my friends!. I think I was around 14-15 when it released.
love this game would totally love to see you build a gaming table for it.

It's probably the perfect GW game, I love Gorkamorka but Mordheim is something really special and it still stands out amongst all It's peers.
DIGGANOB simply cannot be beat!
You are a man of culture Joseph
My friends and I have been playing a campaign to capture The City for about six months now. I made a small site for updates, homebrew rules and pictures. We get together every week or every couple of weeks, and interest for the game has only grown during this time.
I put a map of the campaign on my wall, and we mark victories by attaching band's stickers on it. A lot of fun!

Wow! Amazing video. Mordheim had a special place in my gaming heart. Got rid of nearly all of my WHFB and 40K mini’s years ago, but I couldn’t part from my big box of Mordheim scenery, books, town criers, and 8+ warbands….. This video brought back great memories! Thanks!
Yes it is. end of discussion. I hope Games workshop re releases it oneday.
Awesome ! Mordheim is my favourite game. Would love to see you painting a warband !!!

6:12 Nice to see the Mordheim elf I painted and posted to my blog (Scent of a Gamer) back in 2014!
That wood elf army at 8:11 is absolutely gorgeous! They were my first army back when I was a kid. May I have the source for that picture please?
Thanks Emil! I really love these gaming history video’s.
Man O War is actually the best GW game ever
Man I loved that game. Mantic games has a game a little like it but didn't seem as good
No actually 1st edition AoS is best
I came here to post this.
I regret not buying it when it came out. Would love to paint a carnival of chaos jester.
I love Mortheim! Its really the best game!
I remember preordering and collecting that at the launch back in the day. Loved it and still have the box n all
He doesn't know that HeroQuest is the best game ever made.
The phase after the battle ist a important part, it is very fun to throw some dice and look what fortuna brought you. Or if your guy got taken out of action - what his injuries will be was very exciting.
Many of my favorite miniatures are from the mordheim-range too.
If they re-released this game they would absolutely get my money. Come on GW
I've been playing Mordheim for years, and also we've got new-ish version locally in Poland, called Warheim. It's great to play oldschool mordheim-like game still :D Nice vid Squidmar! It was great time-capsule for me!
Battlefleet Gothic is the best Games Workshop game ever made. period. :D Mordheim is also great.

Hey! As part of the team that designed the Desolation supplement, great video!
Thanks Alessandro ❤️
@@SquidmarMiniatures And don't forget to ENJOY the Sledge run scenario. A super mega hyper funny one!
What are the models at 12:22 from? In the first of the three pictures. They look great.
Ive always wanted to try Mordheim. Neat
There could be a roll up cobblestone board in it for you ;-)
I would love to see a series on you playing a campaign of this. You could model you broken legs and missing hands onto your fav maimed goons.
Love this game so much
Watching you create a Mordheim table would be absolutely epic!
