- In the Following Video we go through some options for your necromunda tabletop game. The focus of this video will be the "core " terrain and scenery involving 3D buildings in particular. Note this won't be a comprehensive review, just a summary of some of the better options I have found. Remember to leave some ideas down in the comments if you have any personal favourites or other places to buy terrain!
Appreciate you Watching this Video and hope you found it useful. A Subscribe and/or Like would be very much Appreciated. When you do so, a tiny piece of the warp is pushed back and we are ever so slightly safer from the realm of chaos.

Make sure to check out the next video in this series where I review my first purchase! - Other purchases / reviews and paint guides will be coming soon. ua-cam.com/video/8Hmi2ReK-fY/v-deo.html
Personally, I go for scratch build. It is amazing what you can do with things that would go to the recycling or the dump.
Great points. I agree 100% about needing the terrain to be ‘360’
It almost needs to be a ‘slice’ of a several layers deep section of hive. Or sewers, street level and then built up areas. Keep up the great work & topics like this are a great help!
I love the 4Ground stuff but I agree, the cost for a whole table is crazy. I'm going to try the TT Combat offerings, though. Looks like a great combination of cost and appearance.
Gimmi 3 weeks and i'll have a set painted / assembled :) - For now tho check out the hands on reviews i've done - might better inform you of the pro's and cons. Best of luck!
I bought the TT combat Hive 1,2 and 3 have yet to build it. Will be a lot of work bit once its complete it will look amazing. Glad others think its a great choice for Necromunda
I'll do an assembly and review in a week or so - feel free to learn from my mistakes, of which there will be plenty.
Out of interest how well do those kits fill out say a 4'x4' board? Would one or two fill it out satisfactorily with maybe a couple of hand crafted pieces thrown in? Or would you recommend all three?
For verticality I bought three sets to really fill a 4'x4' board and make it as Necromunda should be. You could easily get away with just one set to stretch across the board and it would still look great then fill it will small bits of terrain if you prefer a flatter game with less verticality. They are about 40 odd pounds each they are great kits.
i'll let you know in a couple weeks. I would think a 4'4 fairly easy to fill with 3x kits. As each kit is 5-6 buildings. so that's 16 square feet in total, and enough for 1 building per square foot? - hmm maybe need 4 kits then! I'll let you know soon.
Idk why i waited this long to watch this video great job mate! I was thinking of doing a video just like this but you've nailed it.
I am in the same camp as you my good man.
I have bought the Shadow Wars box set (yup, I was one of the lucky 10!) on top of that I picked up the first wave of the Sector Mechanicus kits (hmmm, wish I had waited!) Now that has to be about £150 worth of terrain and it is nothing! I'd need to sell my left kidney in order to flesh out a board of this stuff , lovely as it is it is just way way too expensive.
I then saw the 'Massive Crane' kit from Wargames Tournament, for an MDF kit it is really quite impressive and certainly adds height to your board.
I also grabbed X2 packs of MDF fences, these come with a roll of wire mesh for the fence fronts and a roll of 'Barbed effect wire to attach to the top of the fences for that 'You're gonna get cut TF if you even think about it' feel. These were IMO a bargain at about £7 each and I can't for the life of me remember where I got them! Dohh!!
Now a couple of years ago GW done an amazing kit called the Relecos Militarum which was a couple of the Shrine of the Aquila kits along with plenty of their Sector Imperialis tiles and a few other extra elements. Now this ain't very Necromunderish but it fills a huge area of a 6X4 thats for sure. I took a week off my army painting last weekend and have spent my hobby time this week putting that together. I am still really impressed at the huge foot print this kit covers. Next up painting the bugger, a huge project but I am sure it will be a impressive city fight when it is finally finished.
I really wish GW would do a Sector Mechanicus value set along the same lines as the Relecos! I am sure we would all love to be able to build a pure GW Necromunda themed Sec' Mech' table without having to remortgage our homes to do so!?!
I still can't decide what to buy for my Industrial themed board. I shall be watching what you come up with.
New Sub and Liked!
Great vid m8. Me and my group are starting out on a Necromunda campaign and we're thinking on how we're gonna put a table for it together and this really helped. Cheers
Welcome mate, hopefully saves you some time :) happy hunting.
You know what my idea is?
get a bit of everything, do a basic construction of plywood and then detail it with everything!
Death Ray Designs has been one of my favorite sources for mdf terrain. Great quality, great service.
i agree
Last time I played Necromunda I was a poor student. Between 4 people we managed to make some pretty good scenery with carboard, wood offcuts and judicious amounts of plumbing and electrical supplies. You CAN build excellent scenery for very cheap but if you want it to be quick and easy and modular, you gotta pay.
Tis indeed possible! Might talk in the future about options of creating scenery - I need to get a little more knowledgeable about my arts and crafts first though.
AirsickHydra there's definitely a bit of Blue Peter'ing involved. Toilet roll tubes, washing up bottles and paper mache etc. But throw in a pizza and a few beers and a gaming group can have a lot of fun coming up with a hand made board. The mdf features are new to me but it has a lot of promise. It makes me want to look into buying a laser cutter haha
Hey Hydra, thanks for the vid. Just need to clarify that MDF isn’t cardboard but timber. Keep up the good work mate.
Ps... any info on the new Necromunda video game would be very much appreciated!
Yeah I realised :D thought about going back but it was too late to edit it. Even though they are two different things my brain still refuses to admit this :D
Lol no worries mate.
I went for tt combat slum complex cost me 25 pounds. Really happy with the outcome super customisable and sturdy enough.
Great vid mate, subbed. Looking forward to the upcoming painting guides!
I've been out of tabletop for the past decade or two, played 40k and Necromunda back in the 90's, early 2000's but it fell by the wayside due to life/family etc. However I heard by chance GW were rebooting Necromunda and that's given me the itch to get back into it again. Persuaded a few mates to buy some gangs with the new models (once GW get round to releasing more houses...) and looking forward to returning to the underhive soon.
I'd been looking into terrain much the same as you have and I'm fairly blown away with what is happening with MDF. I'm thinking I'll be going for a few kits from TT Combat or a bundle from Wargames tournaments although after watching the vid I'm leaning towards TTC unless WT have a sale on sometime soon.
I'm also considering filling out the packs of terrain from TTC with a couple of standalone bits from other places, maybe from a company like Sarissa Precision who do a ruined Sci Fi building bundle, or just constructing my own. After all, part of the hobby is the fun of building your own bitz!
If anyone is planning to build their own terrain there's an interesting blog here where the guy is building some cool pieces with instructions on how he's going about it. gotflag.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/buidling-bilgewater-creek-guide-to.html?m=1
Yaktribe is also a great resource for all things Necromunda, here's a thread with some great advice on painting MDF terrain for example:
yaktribe.games/community/threads/simons-very-occasional-plog-of-stuff-hes-done.1290/page-4
I'd also give a shout out to Lukes APS and Commissar Gamza's UA-cam channels for terrain construction and painting inspiration. Great stuff on both channels.
Yeah Luke has some great stuff - As does TheTerrainTutor - Sadly I can't find much on urban / industrial scenery but i'm hoping people will start jumping on that soon. Welcome back to 40k mate! Took a 10 year break myself
AirsickHydra Yeah, general industrial stuff is a bit trickier to find than I thought it'd be but there's bits and pieces that are good and with a bit of creativity I'm sure some good bits can be cobbled together.
I'm sure the new release of necromunda will be a boost to these MDF companies, assuming the game sells well and people play it of course. I'm not sure how the new rules will compare to the old game but I'm personally going to use the new gang models and play the old rules using the community rulebook on Yaktribe. At least until I hear how good or bad the new rules are.
Hopefully Necromunda doesn't get neglected by GW as I think it's a more accessible game than 40k is for a lot of people. I know the sheer price of starting a new army is prohibitive to some people. I couldn't justify it for the use I'd be getting from it to be honest. But £25 for a gang? That's fine by me! :)
thus far i've really liked the new rules - some don't like the new turn system - but for me it's soo much more engaging. Honestly I hope it comes to the rest of the 40k games too. Watching Tau kill someone because they go first... not my idea of a fun and enjoyable experience :D
This video is exactly what I was looking for as I am just getting into this amazing game. Thank you for doing this.
I really love the red beam stuff but can't recommend Ttcombat highly enough. That last set for $400 looks beautiful. Can't wait to see your Necromunda board all up and running.
Brought the triple industrial sector from wargames tournaments for £150 last year. Was on sale I think. Even without scatter terrain works really well. The trick is to use ramps and walkways to block LoS.
Really liking your content, have just started to buy TTCombat hive packs for my new 40k board, keep up the good work
I used TT Combat for my Batman miniatures game, great stuff even unpainted
Promethium Forge has some great options, especially for those in the States
Go Yaktribe and print off the original cardboard scenery and mount it. Repeat as many times as you like.
Great video fella! I was the same as you; no chance of affording the GW stuff but I figured I would start my dream Necromunda project; a vertical board that I can mount on the wall 😀
If you play lot of miniatures games/can afford it, you can buy a 3d printer and print all the terrains you need. For scenery you don't need an expansive one.
It's something I should probably look into Tbh. Perhaps a job for the future.
The red beam stuff is very nice. I think Blackjack Legacy does a full review. Their stuff is made to hold magnets too. I’d check that out
saw the review - stuff looks gorgeous - little too gothic for me - but the modular feature is so convenient
Great vid .Quality & well presented!
MDF as far as I am aware is actual wood pulped powder, not cardboard as you stated, and yes its far cheaper than GW plastics but it has its down side - when edging for instance you need to wear a breathing apparatus as dust goes everywhere including inside you - Lung Cancer!
first time watcher. good vid. on point. I'm in.
Necromunda content is great. Keep it coming.
TTCOMBAT is what I have gone for.
What box did you get champ? - i'm starting with sector 1. Liked the girder guards on the ramps.
Sector 1 - Industrial Complex
Sector 1 - Walkways
Sector 3 - Industrial
Hatches
Back Alley Accessories 2
Gothic Barrels
all from ttcombat, their stuff is very detailed, solid, great price.
Thanks for the great video. AirsickHydra, and it was very well presented.
There are a couple of things I'd like to add from personal experience:
* The 4Gound terrain is a gold standard. It comes pre-painted, and that Jesserai set also comes with the magnets and the slots for them. So the floor tiles and all the terrain pieces are magnatised.
* TTCombat worry me. I have one of their smaller pieces and the quality is poor. Several crucial parts are just the wrong size. That would have been apparent during the test build, they were easy to fix, and there was space on the frame for correct widths. But they didn't bother spending the 4 minutes to correct it. :/
* Multiverse Gaming, I really like the MDF and resin pringle tube toppers you showed on the left. I think I want a few for LoS blocking terrain.
thanks for the contribution :)
There is also Prometeum Forge and the industrial set. Got the Kickstarter, highly recommend it
The red beam stuff has spots for magnets. It’s super super modular.
I owe deadzone and terrain is awesome. You can store it flat and build many diffrent combinations. Back they made diffrent kind of building sets (Urban, Fortifide, Industrial, Ruined),now Mantic mix and match them and you get all diffrent parts in sets (i.e. Check Gang war set)
Surely if you class yourself as a Modeller then the route is self build and for inspiration check out West Side and I am not plugging him but he is well worth taking a look at!
sure thing. Thanks
it comes down to time. also it takes a lot of trile and error when you start i started out when that was the only real option, i got some pointers from white dwarf but it took a few years to start getting things the way i wanted them.
could you be more descriptive what is west side cant find anything applicable on google
I ❤️ Mdf. Some great buildings out there.
Can't wait to review some :D
Great video. The deadzone scenery is a pain to assemble. Recommend avoiding !
+Andrew Dixon I've got some so I'll let you know soon. Enough :D
You could build a lot of walkway from the Mantic Terraincrate stuff. It is truly 100 % flexible.
man am I late to all this , I make table top terrain that looks every bit as good as the stuff GW makes but I do it with the junk I have lying around. seriously some bendy straws for pipeworks cardboard for the framing old bottles and popsicle sticks for planks and rickety bridges and ladders, the trick is the outer layer where you add the gribbely bits. using thin cardboard like cereal boxes you can make details that are super intracit and cover things like the ribbing in the cardboard. in the end the only thing I spend money on is paint and hot glue. I have a youtube channel where show people how to do this in detail. it's never been very popular I just figured this was a thing of the past but check me out if your ever interested
I went with mantic battlezone stuff spent about $300 AUS it’s really good stuff and I make my own walk ways works well for necromunda
oh and my derp for constantly referring to MDF as cardboard :D up until today my brains struggled to admit there's a difference. But now i'm an MDF convert
hmm... Uprising for £170, with a handful of scenery. Or a 3d printer for £220, and have enough scenery to fill your living room, your kitchen, bedroom, garage and garden. Tough choice ;)
I am doing it with 3D printing, but I have my own printer and I am able to make anything I want for next to nothing, yes it takes time but its cheap to do and I have had quite a few friends who are interested in or have
already got me to make some stuff for them :)
I've heard there's some great stuff out there for 3D. Would love to own a printer, so much potential fun to be had.
You should check out: Battle Systems terrain. It is awesome, hard cardboard printed. Just setup your desired set up and play! It gives a movie like experience when you play due to all the details. They have several settings. Let me know what you think of it.
I realize this is an old video, but they removed Sector 2.
I have bought and assembled Sector 1 Beta + Alpha Complex.
It seems to not be enough for 4x4 which the Necromunda campaign I will be playing will be using.
So, what would you get as compliment?
Do you think the Sector 3 Gamma + Delta fits together with the Sector 1 complex?
What about the SECTOR NIHILUS - INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX?
Also, was thinking of getting maybe a SECTOR 1 - POWER GENERATOR or SECTOR 1 - COOLING TOWER to break it up a bit and have a cool piece?
I'm new to terrain and I really don't wanna spend a fortune, but at the same time have a setup for playing at home.
What do you think about using something like this?
www.amazon.se/gp/product/B0047NEHP0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A138JSSICGT8HE&psc=1
Don't forget that the pics you showed of our Dark Assembly terrain only shows it in one particular construction, it is a fully modular and magnetic system: ua-cam.com/video/UUgRqxjQFsE/v-deo.html We also have our cheaper Complex Red range as well
Thank you for pointing that out :) I did gloss over some of the detail to try and show as much as possible. Honestly it's a beautiful looking piece of kit.
Thanks, it was a great video and Im sure it will be of a lot of use to people as its an area with plenty of choice from different manufacturers
I got the wargames tournament set (or half a set depending on how you see it) for the towers and walkways.
I also jumped on the Hab block kickstarter from Mad gaming terrain for the buildings.
The Necromunda core box comes with some scatter, but I am probably going to make some more, especially crates, barriers and walls.
Putting it all on the tricity mat from gamemat.eu I think
Great video thanks for the terrain guide
Hope it helps you my friend :)
Hey just stumbled on your channel, great stuff mate!
Welcome my friend :)
I'm doing all the sector mechanicus terrain, expensive but worth it
TT combat stuff is even cheaper from Wayland games. Brilliant value.
Good video, I just subbed. Decent content.
Welcome onboard!
I have an mdf terrain set but as you identified, it’s frustratingly “open” meaning lots of scatter terrain. Good vid, thanks for making it. A product that may appeal is from battlesystems shop.battlesystems.co.uk/frontier-set-82-p.asp Their stuff is actually cardboard the same as old Necromunda terrain, but is totally modular and has an advantage that none of the other featured systems have... it can pack totally flat! I don’t know about you but storage space is premium for me, a 3D table of terrain takes up huge amount of space.
I did look at their stuff but I came to the conclusion by the time I filled out a 3x3 board with it - I would be spending a fair chunk - although the stuff does look tasty. If I do a part 2 i'll give them a mention as they do deserve it.
if you're quick for the next 12 days they have a kick starter for their new game "Core Space" with the titan pledge you get a stupid amount of scenery for £120
SDFNET 40k, I agree that you can get a nice 2x4 feet of scenery for that Core Space Kickstarter with a Titan pledge(I pledged for 2 of them because I’m insane) . It’s purely dungeon crawl single level stuff, though, in the Titan pledge( I think we get 2 Gothic Crawl sets + the base mats)....totally worth it, but no multi-tier at all. They DO, however, have a couple add on sets from their prior KS that are multi-tier with a few walkways here and there(Frontier and Galactic I believe) that are about 90 USD per 2x2 grid. The one thing that makes these sets so superior is the VERY high quality full color pre-printed designs on those bad boys! Other than some basic color edging with cheap markers, there is ZERO painting required for those sets. I’ve seen Frontier and Outpost(think old school Necro Ash Wastelands) assembled out of the box with my own eyes and I was super impressed.
Great I have most o this but it is good to have it in one place thanks
What a great video sir. Subbed for more.
Great video 👍🏻
Very helpful! Thanks
Very welcome my friend :) glad to be or service.
Thank you for the input!
If money was no object which GAMES WORKSHOP Necromunda scenery would you get ?
Have you seen Uncertain Sceneey?
im.converting milk crates into modular terrain that can be restacked in different orders to make.new maps
You have a very nice voice.
The mic and audio equipment helps a lot :) had help from some kind sound engineers. Many thanks!
A mix of plastic and MDF is the way to go.
So hey, I have a laser cutter and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place that will sell their cutting files for terrain like this?
I made some easy medieval type city ruin MDF designs (put them on the Glowforge forum for free to download) but I'd like to make some industrial type stuff maybe, without having to design it all by hand.
Brilliant vidéo ! :)
Great video!
Tt combat industrial terrain is great and so cheap
Nice chat and share my friend
Been watching your green resin video, will be having a crack at that soon! #soonish
Good stuff, or should I say green stuff lol
huehuhehueheuh
if its any help iv bought some tt combat stuff and its blood good for mdf flat packs
thank you for this
Very welcome Steve.
thanks, good info
Nice one Greetings mr cool!
from about 14min you voice desync, I found for a table to play warhammer and blood bowl, I pick up two 6x2 feet wallpaper tables to make to 6x4 table, then put are terrain on it but got to say do like the sound of the kit your ordering,
weird, it didn't desync for me :S - sure you aren't drunk again mate? :D
nope just gone and rewatch it, more from 14:20 could just be just seem your mouth is moving quicker then the sound lol
Yeah that's about .05 of a second out :D - just how i lined it up. You shall be titled audio-sync man for future projects xD
Nice Video. Btw, MDF is wood, not cardboard ;-)
Fair and i've had many correct me on that. To me it's always behaved more like dense cardboard. Once wood is chewed up and reconstituted I think it should be relegated!
Some papercraft kits would work well for Necromunda. Dave Graffam Models Babylon series (www.davesgames.net/catalog-babylon-hg.htm) would work well.
Use the tiles, they come with the game.
8:34 what is that stuff called? can't find a good google search for it.
Good question. I can't remember but I think I looked it up on some modelling train set sites. Try - "Metalic effect/texture pvc sheet"
Most people in the hobby call it plasticard. The most prolific company for this stuff has to be plastruct.com/ . Be warned their catalog is a scract-builters wet dream, and I could easily spend a years rent on their goodies. ;)
plastruct.com/shop/plain-and-patterned-sheet/91684-ps-152/
Think I found it thanks XingJun Seaton. Not sure if it's the right scale. I'll have to look into that.
Try looking at Battle Systems... www.battlesystems.co.uk
Yeah their stuff looks interesting. Did consider it for a while.
Check out promethean forge
I think the stuff they sell is pretty cool and has a cool unique aspect to some of the kits
3D printed options?
You have to do soo much work to be disappointed with a TT combat order.
Nice Ideas, but your talking was not in sync with your mouth... wich really bothered me after i figured it out. But besides that, i really liked this video.
Your thumbnail pic, I thought you were Stephen Hawking at first.
Sorry to disappoint!
AirsickHydra Not disappointed at all! Just had a giggle. Quite enjoyed your video. 👍🏻☺️
No affiliate links, but is this a paid review?
+scott wagg not at all, just my own personal experiences of a purchase to help others make choices :) Would declare anything that was paid or free as its a requirement for UA-cam. I'll be reviewing everything I purchase. So a little deadzone stuff too!
In the thumbnail u look like stephen hawking. Just saying.
You mean knowledgeable and wearing glasses right? xD - You know I actually kinda agree with you
I went the TT Combat route. Here are my first results. ua-cam.com/video/2VccOpHfP14/v-deo.html
I was "leaning towards" the TTCombat system, but I'll take another look at this before I decide. Thanks :>)
