This man exposed his soul with this song and did not care if it would impact his career which at the time was unthinkable. I wish I had known about this song growing up as it now sheds so much light on who Rod Stewart is as a human being. Back then it would have been considered career suicide to come out as gay or even create art that was gay themed. Rod cared not and poured out his heart and soul in order to pay homage to his dear friend. There were not gay people on television back then. There were no gay themed films at that time. Movie and television stars did not come out as gay. Musical artists would flirt with the idea and tease the public but they certainly did not admit to being LGBTQ. Rod deserves mad respect and I admire him for honoring his friend despite the public backlash he might endure - even if it meant that it would harm his career. A true ally before being an ally was trendy.

Rod always stayed true to who he was ❤❤. He was raised by a very loving Mom and Dad. His Dad was his greatest hero. If anything , this song catapulted him into super stardom. I'm 64 and have been a Die hard fan since I was a young girl. What a VOICE ❤❤❤

I agree 100% ! Respected the guy as a talented musician but this must've been ground-breaking at the time and as said previously, could've been career suicide.
Rod seriously went up in my estimations when I learned about this song - and only recently too.

Rod Stewart was not gay… Far from it. He had gay friends. Here are his comments:
The story is based on a real man named Georgie, whom Stewart knew, but was a closer friend of Faces’ keyboardist Ian MacLagan. “I only knew him fleetingly,” Stewart told the Guardian in 2016. “He would play songs for us and say, ‘Have you heard this?’ I remember him turning us on to Sam and Dave singing ‘Night Time Is the Right Time’. I can tell you, he was a hell of a good-looking guy.”
Stewart later opined that he wrote ‘The Killing of Georgie’ “probably because I was surrounded by gay people at that stage. I had a gay PR man, a gay manager. Everyone around me was gay. I don’t know whether that prompted me into it or not. I think it was a brave step, but it wasn’t a risk. You can’t write a song like that unless you’ve experienced it. But it was a subject that no one had approached before. And I think it still stands up today.”

The song was released on the airwaves in the United States rigth at a crucial time for what was in fact the 70's gay rights movement. I was a part of that movement in Los Angeles where people were definitely ready for it. I was 18 and also a big rock fan. Stewart was one the first to even get near the topic. People were amazed, even in LA.

I purchased the album in 1976 for other songs. I was 16, a bit naive about the world. I am straight, as I've always been. This song opened my eyes to more of the world. It is a beautiful song. It was done tastefully and will always be played by me. It is not an anthem for a cause, just a heartfelt story of the human race.

In 1969, I was 11 years old. I didn't know then that I was gay, but I always felt something different. This song resonated throughout my life. It touched people so deeply who were living in the closet because coming out back then was asking to be harassed, beat up, locked up in mental institutions, shunned by family, killed on the street; we were banned from living within the mainstream of society if we were ever found out. It branded us in such a hurtful way. Now I look back where it began and I am so glad we no longer have to hide. Yet, back then, once we discovered who we were and we began to find others like ourselves, it was magical and beautiful and painful. For people now who weren't alive during the the Stonewall Rebellion on June 28, 1969, or if you have never heard of the history that began the Gay Rights movement, do your research and be thankful that others came out, found their courage, and changed the world for future generations. This is one song that truly gave us heartache and courage. It was devastating to listen to, yet many of us listened to it over and over.

His lyrics were very telling of a man who had been through it all, and done it all. AINT LOVE A BITCH, the Blondes have more fun album was quirky and honest as is I was only Joking. He knows how to put life into perspective with his lyrics. Not many can do that. Especially today. I read that the Heart and Soul tour he teamed up with Stevie Nick's wasn't very good. I wanted to see it in KC, but missed it. In the few videos I have seen, there appears to be some awkwardness between the two. I really thought it should work because of their years in the business, age, and timing of their musical interests lyrically. Any way, I remember these songs playing on the radio while in high school, cleaning house, or in my car partying on a Saturday night.

I love the sensitivity of the video and Rod's movements..way he uses his body to convey personality...it is not mockery - of his gay mate. If you follow the evolution of Rod. This song This performance shows the change,,, As I'm watching him sing, I could see that he's much more confident. He's taking it much more seriously. It's no more jokes. It's no more laughter. There's no more enjoyment. He's telling a story about a friend. Yes, he's serious about it, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about it to make sure his jacket it looks good on his shoulders. He is just different now. His early years he could rip a shirt and I wouldn't care you can throw a scarf onto the ground. Who cares? It was all part of the show. I guess we all changed now. Don't we❤ I would say that now he owns the audience. They know him. He's famous And he knows it!!

I'm a 56 yr old man. I was around 9 or so when this came out. Thanks to my older brother and sister I was already deep into rock and roll and was well aquainted with the beauty and strength in Rod Stewart's music.
Interesting enough, a few years later I was molested by my brother's best friend. He grew up across the street from us. "Friend of the family", so fucking typical. Years later when I tried to bring it out for my own sanity, no one believed me. 😓 So I confronted him about it. I must've been about 30 or so, which made him around 37 or 38. At the time of the stuff, I was between 12-14, he was 19-21.
I told him at his front door, he knew and I knew and God knew. He just slammed his front door on me. Crazy ironic fucked up twist, he was my brother's best man at his wedding. I was 20 then, he was 27. This fucked up thing has been circling in my head all these years. I'm a straight man. Heck, I even dated the homecoming queen in high school for a time. I'm not super good looking. Lol Just perhaps, what would've been called in high school, a "pretty boy". But I've grown into a decent looking guy, good athlete, spent yesrs years in prison on dope cases years ago and held my own. No problem there. Lol
To say it hasn't affected me, would be a lie. To say it's fucked me up or given me any hang-ups would also be a lie. I'm old enough and mature and intelligent enough to understand that it happened, I was a kid, he wasn't. Thus, regardless of what anyone else has to say or think about it, fuck you, you weren't there. I was a victim. Period.
I went to visit my brother a few years ago and he cut me off as he opened his front door. (In some further cruel twisted irony of fate or whatever, they wound up living across the street from each other. My brother getting our mother's house in some crazy inheritance deals and he, getting his parents house in much the same way).
He said, "Mark, Stephen's dead. He apparently had a sudden heart attack a few months back. He was alone in the house. A neighbor found him on his kitchen floor unconscious. Called 911, too late. DOA".
    I said, "good".

The amount of detail and emotion conveyed in Stewart's controlled, vamping manner for only 2, maybe 3 cameras on a spare set is incredible. • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella Рік тому +4

@@kitrichardson2165 There are two differences between this borrowing by Rod, and The Beatles', which I think make a difference: The Beatles didn't usually borrow wholesale (even in the Bobby Parker instances), and secondly they were very ready to own up to borrowing at any level, generally volunteering the fact rather than having to have it pointed out.
For instance in the case of Chuck Berry’s bassline for ‘I’m Talking About You’ which Paul used for ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, which WAS borrowed wholesale, Paul was the one who pointed it out; nobody had noticed.
And Lennon was not complaining particularly about Rod, he asked "why didn't he just sing "Don't Let Me Down" ... and then went on to answer himself "Same reason I don't: because then I don't get paid!"
