I worked in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in 1970's In one week he did eight concerts, midnight matinees on the Friday and Saturday. Lionel Blair was the support act. I have never witnessed more powerful performances nor such colossal crowd reaction. Some of the biggest names in showbusiness, Mama Cass, Cat Stevens, Roger Moore Joan Collins ...he brought tears to their eyes through his singing dancing and stories of life...his own. I was a wine butler in the Great Room. None of us who worked that week would ever forget what we'd witnessed

      "He's living it"
Like he said, he hated the song because it reminded him of his possible end.
He ended up like most Black performers, ravished by drugs and died broke.
The above was his fear, sadly it became 100% true.
The man could do it all, dance, sing, act, imitate, played 5/6 instruments.

I miss this man so very much. He was a friend of mine, and I thank you for making these videos available. They are priceless. In the 1980's, I was a daily columnist for The Sacramento Union. Life in Sacramento in those days was very dull, so I asked Harrah's Club at Lake Tahoe if they would like someone to review some of their shows. I was surprised that a major paper so close to Tahoe did not have regular entertainment reviewers, so Harrah's was very happy to have me come up from time to time to review the shows. My first big-time review was Sammy. We hit it off instantly. After the first meeting, his manager Murphy Bennett would call me whenever they would be coming back to the resort. We met probably eight times. The interview always took place in the penthouse "Stars' Suite" atop Harrah's, then I'd go to the dinner show, and be invited backstage afterwards for another less formal interview. I was able to bring my wife at the time to meet him, as well. The times we spoke and laughed and "giggled," as he liked to call it, are precious memories for me. In the mid-80's, he was having a hard time quitting drinking. I told him I had recently quit and would be happy to help him. We worked together on this, and he was soon able to stop altogether. But the cigarettes were something else. There was always a big bowl of Pall-Malls on his coffee table, and this was one habit he just could not beat. The cigarettes were what finally got him . I have to tell you this is one of the most fascinating people I have ever met. I absolutely cherish my time with him and Murphy Bennett, and I was heartboken the day he died. I never took my friendship with him for granted. Before he died, we had talked about collaborating on a cook book together that would be aimed at people trying trying to quit booze. We were going to call it "Booze Blues." And then he died. It always fascinated me that wherever he went, he brought this huge chest filled with cooking utensils with him -- and Harrah's had its own five-star restaurant! I come on UA-cam many times to replay these classic songs and to rekindle my memories with my pal Sammy. Thank you again to whomever is making these posts.......Peter Anderson

Peter Anderson thank you for sharing your beautiful memories. My grandmother was a huge fan of Sammy’s and I remember sitting with her and watching him on the variety shows in the 70’s. Tonight I was watching an episode of a television show called Billions, and the Mr. Bojangles song was played in the beginning and at the ending, and it was so moving. I immediately logged on here to watch Sammy’s performance and it felt so comforting. Then, I happened upon your comment and it really made my heart feel good. He was a treasure and I know heaven is a beautiful place because he is there. Thanks again for sharing.

Hey Kathy Hill -- Very cool of you to share your feelings with me about you and your grandmother. I know exactly what you mean. It sounds trite, but he didn't just sing the song, he WAS the song. You would've loved him in person. Incredibly sharp, witty, well-informed and very current. I wasn't prepared to like him so much. All that bad press he got about hugging Nixon at The White House, all that flashy bling, the playboy lifestyle, rumors about his flirting with the Satanic church -- I was very wary at our first meeting. He converted me in about five minutes! One of the most charming, caring, inquisitive and talented individuals I have ever met. Luckily, the evidence of his talent is with us forever. I did all I could to show my appreciation to him, but I still have these lingering doubts that I didn't thank him enough. An absolutely remarkable human being. People who disparage him without having met him should check their biases at the door. Thanks again, Kathy, you made my night!

Peter Anderson doesn’t sound trite at all and I agree with every word. The more you watch this, the more incredible it is. He hardly moves out of conversation mode, yet he's pitch perfect and hits every note. Takes the roof off if he needs to. He's about 60 and "clicks his heels" for real. You hardly notice the dance moves, but they're faultless. The vaudeville is always there, he feeds off the orchestra and vice versa. Somebody in Germany has gold-plated memories!

Although he didn’t write the song, it could have easily described his own life. His father and uncle took him on the road when he was 3 or 4 years old as part of their show. So the Mr. Bojangles he implores to come back could easily refer to one of those men.

A performance is just fake usually and sadly. Sammy Davis JR was a hardcore satanist doing extremely wicked things that lacked heart, morality, and sentiment. Run and cry out to Jesus Christ, for with Him is all the heart of life and true light. Sammy davis knew about and was working for the devil. The music and entertainment industry is demonic and wicked sadly. Eternity is real, repentance is a gift from God and a real gift that has nothing to do with modern religion. God bless.

As a kid from Liverpool, I never saw religion or colour but I recognised something that spoke to me through performance or music -
He had it all in bucket loads and I thank him for that

@@leyladerben4227 I'm a kid and I agree with the second statement, but the second statement I can slightly disagree. I personally don't live in America, but the artists there don't have as much talent as the older generation, it's all autotuned now. However, autotune does make some good music.

Derben Leyla I disagree . He was more popular then the guy who wrote the original and this version is like more 🤷‍♀️and that’s just being honest . There isn’t talent specific to old school talent and that’s the truth . Especially tap dancing , swinging , singing . It’s all different . It’s not bad now a days but it definitely cannot compare

Just a reminder to those who have forgotten - real music and entertainment is still alive today. Don't let the internet cloud your mind. Just because your taste of music isn't in the mainstream doesn't mean all hope in the world is lost. There's more people than you may think that still love and cherish this music. Still to this day pulling inspiration. Just like with comedy, music is subjective.

This song is such a classic. It makes me cry every time I hear it. Some songs are just soothing to the soul & this by far is one of them. It really touches my soul when he says, the dog up & died & he grieved. I felt that because my precious dogs died & I know about grieving a lifetime. I loved my dogs!!!! Thank You Sammie David Jr. For the great memories & singing such an amazing song!! RIP ❤️

16 at school. Drama department were doing a musical show (own written)
I had my role changed as one of the students were taken ill.
I volunteered to swap parts. I couldn't dance as good as the other student. But this was the song I ended up doing. It was Last minute, I'm suprised I didn't choke up when doing this.
Never been a huge rat pack fan, like the occasional Dean Martin song. But this is my number 1 favourite rat pack song. Thank you Sammy
