Can't resist Rod Stewart, even after all these years. Fell in love with him and his music during the 70's when I was in my 20's. Now I'm in my 60's and I still think he's sexy. Rock on, Rod!

And there's a real story in the lyrics that gives another dimension to this masterpiece!

Ever since I was a kid in school
I messed around with all the rules
    Apologized, then realized
    I'm not different after all
Me and the boys thought we had it sussed
    Valentinos all of us
My dad said we looked ridiculous
But, boy, we broke some hearts
In and out of jobs, running free
    Waging war with society
Dumb, blank faces stared back at me
    But nothing ever changed
Promises made in the heat of night
Creepin' home before it got too light
I wasted all that precious time
And blamed it on the wine
I was only joking, my dear
Looking for a way to hide my fear
What kind of fool was I?
    I could never win
    Never found a compromise
    Collected lovers like butterflies
Illusions of that grand first prize
    Are slowly wearin' thin
Susie, baby, you were good to me
    Giving love unselfishly
But you took it all too seriously
I guess it had to end
I was only joking, my dear
Looking for a way to hide my fear
What kind of fool was I?
    I could never win
    Yeah, baby, woo
Now you ask me if I'm sincere
That's the question that I always fear
    Verse seven is never clear
But I'll tell you what you want to hear
I try to give you all you want
But giving love is not my strongest point
If that's the case, it's pointless going on
    I'd rather be alone
'Cause what I'm doing must be wrong
Pouring my heart out in a song
    Owning up for prosperity
For the whole damn world to see
Quietly now while I turn a page
Act one is over without costume change
The principal would like to leave the stage
    The crowd don't understand

When I was in my first band, we covered this song. I was still young (19, I think...) and I tried to be as convincing as possible that I understood the pain that this song conveys. The truth is that I could absolutely relate to some of it (yes, even the girl named 'Suzie'...mine was 'Susan'). In some ways, we have all been the protagonist in this song. Rod Stewart is amazing.

An absolute masterpiece through and through
evoking both laughter and tears from a 63 y/o
turning a corner and knowing it- like being blind
folded in a car- but still can sense a bend coming
Final phase scary shit and music is the medicine
With reflecting on an early 1970's teenage @@
"in and out of jobs running free".........................
Fantastic guitar solo with overlaps various types
of guitars on the same riffs just brilliant and as
a (former) player had this off after lots of effort
and practice to the point "Suzy baby" * going mad
Recently frozen the use of my left hand due to mild stroke
perhaps there are adaptive alternatives but not the same
meanwhile I feel George Harrison "my guitar gently weeps"
*Maggie O'Brien 1977/78 "giving love unselfishly"
    xx
Brilliant Rod a fantastic expression and era to be young
Foot Loose and Fancy Free would not change for anything.
    Thank You.

This song really is about the singer.
Although he may have made it to being one of the best ever rock singers, and been able to do a lot of things because of it, somewhere along the line there is a cost, sometimes just doing what we do causes the cost, other times we actually make a pile of trouble for ourselves, none the less it a life that takes nearly all your privacy and family life, but all in all everything has a price.
I am glad that Rod Stuwart stuch with it, he has written some real charmers in his time and most of all he is still there.
I really went for the oldies albums very nicely done and will only go to keep these songs and music around for many years.
A great singer and a nice guy.
