The song is about death. He’s in a hotel room by the freeway, reading a book full of death. The Bible, which the Gideon organization would leave in hotel rooms. That book is, indeed, full of death. Chris struggled with depression and suicidal ideation most of his life and finally did succumb to it. He is describing that feeling here. Waiting to go to Heaven and not be here anymore. The Bible says “In my house are many mansions”. So, he longs to be in God’s house.
Finally, someone got it right. You nailed it (pun intended)
great lyrics: "wine was bled" sure packs a lot of punch into three syllables
Chills. I never listened to the lyrics close enough to know this. (Embarrassed to say). My son is a HUGE Cornell fan, plays and sings many of his songs and one night he was doing this 👆 song and right after heard Chris had passed and texted me right off completely devastated. 😢 Chris had a huge impact on my son’s singing. He actually sounds a lot like him. Marcus Metz Like a Stone karaoke on UA-cam. (Yes a little plug for my kid. He should be doing music. It’s such a gift to give to the world) RIP Chris.
To me this ended up being prophetic.
Tim comments on the lyrics in the documentary on Audioslave, Chris is indeed singing about waiting to die. Your comments add more context I hadn't heard. RIP Chris.
Chris Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden. Man had a voice like no other. If you want to check out more of his stuff Audioslave, Soundgarden, and Temple of the Dog are all places to look.
Edit: I always thought about this a referencing some sort of purgatory - he's waiting there to be reunited with a lost loved one.
RIP Chris - I hope you finally found what you were waiting for.
Add Mother Love Bone to that list. Pearl Jam wouldn't exist without them.
Temple of the Dog, “Say Hello to Heaven”. Chris Cornell using one of the most powerful voices ever to lament the loss of one of his closest friends. That song will put you on your knees.
I love Hope & promises 2
& Patience
dont forget his solo project euphoric morning its a master piece!
RIP Chris. Best rock singer ever.
cap!
Axel rose is one of the best rock singers he can hit 5 octaves and has insane range...but there's still better like Mike Patton from faith no more he can sing 6 octaves and has even better range.
Axle can get up there but Chris’s vocal style is much cleaner and I put him up there on the same page as Lane Staley. They all have their own style and are great but that’s my preference.
I would say, most powerful singer. His punch from his voice and his lyricism will never be matched
@@GrowingDownUnder cap
Chris Cornell was the frontman for one of the "Big 5 Bands". These were the 5 bands who put Grunge music on the map in the 90's and blew the roof off the genre. They are all Iconic bands.
Cornell was the frontman for Soundgarden, then later Audioslave (with members of RAGE) and he had a solo career. Sadly, his voice will never be heard live again. REALLY SAD note, 4 of the 5 frontmen for the "Big 5" are deceased. RIP Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland and Layne Staley.
The "Big 5": Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam shaped a portion of a generation, me being one. I'm your age BP, born in 1980, and this music was what I grew up on and to this day hands down my favorite. Check out those 5 bands in particular, I can't put into words what their music was like.
Two died by suicide and two died from overdose. Eddie Vedder only one still alive and still recording and performing.
Loved this when it first came out and today as a 70 year-old woman - tears are running down my face because this is exactly how I feel after loosening too many people - waiting like a stone. Good music is good forever.
audio slave is supergroup. Singer from soundgarden (RiP Chris Cornell) with 3 members from Rage Against The Machine. This genre falls under alternative. Song is about afterlife, like what everyone hopes for in afterlife.
The song is about an old man who is the last one alive form his group of friends and cant wait to see them again in the afterlife
Love this translation!!
Same after i found out about it my love for this song grew 10 times over, with his voice its so hauntingly beautiful@@killabees213 that what ive heard and seen in my reseach at least still my be wrong for all i know they meant something else
@@niatilevi9768necessarily an old man?
@@alifc1082 not 100% sure, but yeah he can be singing about a young man too
My son that is 24, this is his favorite song. He loves Cris Cornell’s voice. His voice is absolutely beautiful.
You just listened to the No. 1 voice in rock music, or maybe the No. 2 voice, if one considers Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin as No. 1. His name is Chris Cornell and he was the lead singer of 90's grunge band *SOUNDGARDEN* . He also has solo albums. His voice was stellar. He passed away in 2017 - most say suicide - but myself and others say "suicided".
The singer Chris Cornell is the same guy you reacted to singing the Prince cover, Nothing Compares To You. During his solo career he mostly performed with an acoustic guitar. He loved the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and covered many of their songs. Chris started off playing the drums then guitar, and i heard he also played the piano
Read your comment just as I was getting ready to recommend that track 😂
Audioslave was great. Cris Cornell from Soundgarden is the vocalist and man you NEED to check out his cover of Billie Jean!
I second that....his cover of Billie Jean is fire 🔥
Chris Cornell was so freaking awesome. He is sorely missed and one can only hope he has found the happiness in his afterlife that he couldn't find here. RIP Chris Cornell.
BP, you should listen to Soundgarden too. Audioslave and Soungarden has great catalogs to go through. Some of my Soungarden favs are Spoonman, Fell on Black Days, Blow up the Outside World, Let Me Drown, and Outshined....of course they have plenty others that are awesome too
Cochise was their first song. It's a banger. You'll like it. I won't forget the video premiered on MTV. Lots of hype about the collaboration and whether they would be able to stand up to their former bands. They did. One of my fav albums.
Vocalist Chris Cornell is from the grunge area of music. He has lost many of friends from drugs ( Layne Stanley) from Alice In Chains ,,, Andrew Wood from ( Mother Love Bones) it's been said he wrote this for them. Now Chris Cornell has passed away. I suggest you listen to Man In A Box official video from Alice In Chains. RIP Layne,, Chris,,& Andrew you all are missed.
Rip Chris C! He took his own life in 2017, his good friend Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) sang at his funeral, not long after Chester took his own life too.
They were both tortured souls of depression and addiction. 2 Awesome artists who rock on together in the afterlife and leave us with their amazing talented catalogs of music
rip chris. he still hadn't reached the peak of what he could do. he was getting better with age
Yes, u got it right... Audioslave is Rage Against the Machine without the politics... Tom Morello (guitar), Timmy C (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums) ... originally formed in 2001 as Civilian w/ Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Soundgarden, they changed the name to Audioslave and released their debut album in 2002... It was a huge hit record and sold 3x platinum in the US w/ the singles - 'Cochise' ... 'Like a stone'... 'I am the Highway'... 'Show me how to live'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥Their music was hard rock for sure...
Chris Cornell always wrote dark, cryptic lyrics in Soundgarden ('The day I tried to live' ... 'Pretty noose' ... 'Like suicide'...) The fact that he took his own life in 2017 showed that he struggled w/ depression in life. The 1991 Temple of the Dog album was Cornell mourning the loss of a friend...
Audioslave released their 2nd album 'Out of exile' in 2004... the singles 'Be yourself' ... "Doesn't remind me"... pushed the album to #1 on the US charts and sold platinum... Unfortunately, Chris Cornell left Audioslave in 2006 just after the release of their 3rd album 'Revelations' (which sold gold - half million copies in the US)
Chris Cornell was talking to the members of RATM about possibly working on new Audioslave songs... Sadly, his death in 2017 ended that possibility.
Cornell is a fuckin legend!! One of, if not the, greatest vocalists of his generation. Henry Rollins once said “… I watched as his screams peeled paint off of walls…” describing seeing Soundgarden (Cornell’s) former band perform live
All these guys were in Rage except for Chris Cornell. He’s the singer and was in Soundgarden
That's the connection I've always been missing about this bad. I love Soundgarden. No wonder why I have always loved the vocals so much in this song. I may have to look for more Audioslave with that being said. I've only known this song from them.
@@mimikannisto4418 Audioslave is a great gorup, lots of hits
I still remember the first time I heard this song when it had just come and didn't know anything about the band when the guitar solo came and immediately made the connection! My friend who knew about the band wanted me to figure it out on my own. This was before smart phones though so those were the games we'd play.
It is Alternative Rock. Wikipedia - Audioslave was an American rock supergroup formed in Glendale, California, in 2001. The four-piece band consisted of Soundgarden's lead singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell with Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass/backing vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums). Critics first described Audioslave as a combination of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, but by the band's second album, Out of Exile, it was noted that they had established a separate identity. Their unique sound was created by blending 1970s hard rock and 1990s alternative rock, with musical influences that included 1960s funk, soul and R&B. As with Rage Against the Machine, the band prided themselves on the fact that all sounds on their albums were produced using only guitars, bass, drums, and vocals, with emphasis on Cornell's wide vocal range and Morello's unconventional guitar solos.
The baby in the background brings chills to me for some reason. The duality of thinking of death while new life smiles behind him
One of my favourite songs of all time
Chris Cornell great voice Audioslave Amazing Band......
R.I.P Chris Cornell we miss your awesome music that started in the Seattle sound of the 90s grunge era .. Miss you so much ❤
"Hunger Strike" with Chris and Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) would also be a good one to react to.
There is and only will be one Chris Cornell. RIP Chris. A part of my soul died the day you left this earth. 💔
If you watch the CHRIS CORNELL DOCUMENTARY, then you will understand about his songs and life and it will lead you to Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, numb then 1 more light. I don’t think I would be the only one that would watch it with you.
Probably my fave song of all time! I LOVE Chris Cornell and am a huge fan of RATM. He’s referencing the Bible in the first verse. “In your house I long to be” = heaven.
Check out, 'show me how to live' by audioslave. Or Soundgarden 'Say hello to heaven, live. 'Beyond the wheel' live in 1990. Such a voice!! RIP Chris, you are missed...
Say Hello to Heaven is Temple of the Dog. But yeah he should go down the entire cornell catalog.
I heard that "like a stone" means he's waiting to die. all his friends are dying. Apparently he is a poet.
Chris… RIP. My heart still hurts that he’s gone. 💔💔💔
Best vocalist ever!!!
Best singer/songwriter and guitarist
Chris and Layne Staley had the best voices in the rock game.
💯
Goats
Eddie too 😢
@@lolrachie1 yes, he's amazing too
RIP Chris he definitely had one of the best voices
RIP Chris 👑🖤
Chirs Cornell is a genius! it was so crazy i saw him with soundgarden a week before he passed away. i feel very lucky i had the experience and witness him sing live. he does a cover of michael jacksons billie jean and its amazing..
A great Audioslave song is "I am the highway", or "Shadow on the sun". The dude is Chris Cornell, one of the best voices you will ever hear.
On one of Chris Cornell's solo project, he did a cover of MJ's Billie Jean and it will blow your friggin' mind
R. I. P. Chris. You are loved and missed!!
You may, unwittingly, have heard Chris Cornell previously. He wrote and performed "You Know My Name", the opening theme to James Bond: Casino Royale.
Chris was a once in a lifetime talent. We will never see another as long as we live. RIP Chris
Chris was amazing. Listen to his cover of Nothing Compares To You. Goosebumps
To love someone so dearly youd wait for them in the Afterlife like a stone
audioslave soundgarden and temple of the dog all unmatchable
Chris's voice was mesmerizing. RIP too soon. Great reaction ❤
My two favorite songs by Audioslave were this one and " I am the Highway." They touched something deep with in me, from the first time I heard them, and still resonate strongly with me today.
A good song provides you the message the writer is sending. A great song allows you to find personal meaning in the lyrics. You interpreted it exactly as you were supposed to.
This is one of my favorite songs. It has deep meanings and great musicianship. Impeccable at all standards.
To lighten the mood: Chris Cornell was a huge SRV fan. He received an award named for Stevie for his work to help addiction recovery. RIP Chris
Like a stone or gasoline are bangers
Chris Cornell's live studio version of this song hits you to the core. Recorded decades later. Anyone in the comment section...a must hear!
One of my favorite songs ever.
chris was one of the best vocalists ever.. his acoustic 'nothing compares 2 u" cover is amazing.
Such a beautiful voice. Such a beautiful soulf
What a great song. Played the hell out of this when it came out always a treat when I hear it now.
Chris is the best voice in rock ever
Such a soulful voice.
Listen, this man was everything!
Yup! Everyone besides the vocalist is from Rage.. and Chris Cornell, the vocalist is from SoundGarden. And yes, the guitarist name is Tom Morello.
I randomly tear up sometimes when I hear him sing and it’s unexpected. For example I just watched the movie Collateral, which I randomly picked to watch, and then they are playing Shadow On the Sun in the only quiet scene in the movie. I actually hadn’t seen the movie, I had only seen that clip of it. It’s not a sentimental movie but there I was tearing up. Chris Cornell can get you reved and then mellow you out, I tear up because he’s gone. I so hope he’s resting in peace in a place he longed to be. (Chezzy but true)
I’ve done the same, just randomly crying when I unexpectedly hear his voice. Chris Cornell had such a gift and we are lucky he shared it with the world.
RIP Chris Cornell!!
I loved Soundgarden and Audioslave!
Greatest singer to ever live it's not even close. Songs about waiting to die
Rip Chris❤ 'be yourself' is a good one too.
That's all the guys from Rage - Zack, with Chris on vocals!
Always loved Audioslave, in the 90s couldnt go wrong with RATM or Soundgarden. both sounds together is just it.
Man, music is poetic!!!!!
Shadow on the Sun is also amazing
It's about wanting to go to heaven. Good song .he felt what he wrote. He'll be missed
RIP. Chris
Chris Cornell was most likely the greatest rock singer of my generation. A voice that was one of a kind and head and shoulders above all others RIP thanks for the memories.
Ahhhh! NO ONE SINGS LIKE YOU ANYMORE!! Soundgarden is what I listened to day after day after day…. Hour after hour after hour when my sister died age 17 and I was 16! No one understood my pain! Music is where I went! Music is how I survived! The power of music still remains absolutely vital to my existence!
Saw 'Prophets of Rage' (supergroup) after Chris Cornell passed, and they did an instrumental version of this. It was beautiful.
"It's the rage against the machine without the politics" Basically, you nailed it.. When Zack left rage, the boys needed something to do, and this was the magical result
AudioSlave was/is considered Alternative and was a Cornerstone of the Grunge movement that originated in Seattle where Chris Cornell grew up. AudioSlave and Soundgarden both Chris Cornell.
I still remember when I found out that Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and other bands was forming a band with the guys from RATM minus Zach. I was so excited because those are 2 of my favorite bands ever, and they didn't disappoint what they produced . You gotta listen to more AudioSlave, Soundgarden, or RATM. Thanks for the content
Gods house is a new concept I never thought of before. It makes sense.
Chris cornel was one of the the best artist and an amazing writer ever… he would create bands with other established band sound garden, audio salve, temple of the dog with Eddie vedder then also had an amazing solo career he did some amazing covers too.
It breaks my heart to hear this now after his death.
Its called Alternative Rock baby!
The guy had a beautiful voice.
RIP Chris🕊
Love that your doing this older stuff, there is so much great music from "our" day! Love some new stuff as well, found your channel through Ren, but I grew up on this stuff! It's great to hear through new ears.
Chris is one of the greatest.
Chris Cornell is widely considered one of the greatest rock singers of all time. For some people he is #1. The amount of vocal power and range he had, when he used them to the max, was unbelievable. And he was very active and prolific musically. Also, besides being an excellent vocalist, he was a stellar songwriter and strong lyricist. One of the greatest for sure.
Chris was in MACC, Alice Mud Garden, Temple of the dog, Soundgarden and Audioslave. A lot of these bands were side projects and reformations of people that they already knew, but I wouldn’t say that they were the same bands if that makes sense. Different vibe. Sometimes they would just reform with people they knew, and create a whole Nother sound.
Damn I love Audio slave. Chris Connel (also from Sound Garden) was against child trafficking and so was Chester Bennington form Lincoln Park. They were speaking out against Child Trafficking and were "Suicided" Bless them both. Chris Cornel is one special bloke.
I remember buying this album when it dropped. First time anything related to RATM was even around at the time. Listening to the song again after Chris passed though is crazy.....
Been listening to the first Audio Slave album with this song, my favorite, since 2001! Love it! I am the Highway is another favorite, says this 74 year old Grandma! Still sad when I hear his beautiful voice. Looking back, I now hear his pain.
"Doesn't remind me" by audioslave is awesome.. you probably have heard it in passing
Chris was a free thinker, and he has often said that he wrote his songs in a way that people could put their own meanings into it.
Dude was one of a kind
you got the meaning of the song perfectly in my eyes
LOVE them!
Chris Cornell was an amazing artist. He was good friends with Chester Bennington. Sadly after Chris took his like Chester took his on Chris’s birthday of the same year. It was heartbreaking losing two great artists so close together. (I’m sure there were others that year as well)
Ohhhh I love this song
Chris Cornell was depressed for many years, when you look at his lyrics through that prism, a lot of it makes sense. The eerie part is that he ended up taking his life in a hotel room, not too dissimilar to what's being described in the song. He was waiting for death and since it didn't come for him he invited it himself... The song is similar to Johnny Cash's Hurt IMO.
Audioslave is the best ever
Chris Cornell doing Billy Jean and princes nothing compares to you are a must
Chris Cornell is one of the greatest singers of this generation. He has more than a 4 octave range and has a power to his voice like no other. His lyrics are very open to interpretation but usually verge on some darker subject matter. Chris unfortunately left this earth on May 18th, 2017 just a couple months shy of his 53rd birthday. He would have been 60 this year if he was still with us. It’s ironic to think that he survived drug addiction, alcoholism, and what ever else these rock stars do to their bodies when they are young, and lived to see his 50’s, but ultimately succumbed to misuse of his prescription drugs that he used to deal with his anxiety, depression, etc. He left behind a legacy of music for us all to enjoy for many years to come. A little aside to his story is that his good friend Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) committed suicide couple months after Chris on July 20th, 2017, which would have been Chris’ 53rd birthday. It’s all a huge tragedy, but we are lucky to have such great music to enjoy for years to come.
RIP Chris
I hope the gods have taken you back to that place you’ve been so long ago
