The amount of talent we've lost due to drugs, depression and other mental health issues is heartbreakingly sad. I miss Kurt, Layne, and Chris. Great song and reaction.

For another Audioslave song, i'd recommend "Show me How to Live."
For a Soundgarden song, id recommend "Outshined."
For a solo Chris song, I'd recommend "Sunshower.
And for a Temple of the Dog song, I'd recommend "Say Hello 2 Heaven."

Chris has sung a lot of heavy-hitting songs throughout his career, but the ones that hit the personal sadness of others are the heaviest ones. I don't know who organized it, but there was an Audioslave autobiography DVD or whatever (in the band's active era, so between 2001 and 2006), and they had Tim (the bassist) talk about his experiences with Chris. I guess they asked him about this song specifically, and Tim said that he assumed the song was about a man waiting to join his wife in the afterlife, but he asked Chris about it and he said it was about a man waiting to die. Tim then went on to say that he went back and listened to his other work and started understanding the things Chris was really writing about. And, for me personally, I've seen that over the time that I've gone and listened to everything he did with Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave particularly. Maybe not all of his songs are deeply personal, but you can see it in the ones that are.
And I have a few recommendations for other, similar songs to this one you might like to hear:
"Say Hello 2 Heaven" by Temple of the Dog (written about his grunge era friend and fellow singer, Andrew Wood, who OD'd on heroin, and TOTD was more or less made to honor Andy Wood)
"Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog, with vocals by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (the song isn't necessarily about him personally, but it's a really heartfelt song)
"Mind Riot" by Soundgarden (this was also a song inspired by what happened to Andy Wood)
"The Day I Tried To Live" by Soundgarden (a lot of people think this song is about suicide, but Chris has said in different interviews that the song is about those days where you try to do something and it doesn't work out, and all you can do is try again tomorrow)
"Like Suicide" by Soundgarden (this song isn't about suicide either, Chris has said that he wrote it in reference to the time a bird flew into his window and he had to mercy-kill it because it was too injured to survive)
"Blow Up The Outside World" by Soundgarden (I don't know exactly what Chris said the meaning of the song is, but the lyrics sound like the feeling of depression and wanting to shut off from the world)
"Burden In My Hand" by Soundgarden (this one is about a man who kills his girlfriend in the desert and comes to regret doing so)
    "Halfway There" by Soundgarden
"I Am The Highway" by Audioslave
"Your Time Has Come" by Audioslave
    "Out Of Exile" by Audioslave
    "Be Yourself" by Audioslave
    "Doesn't Remind Me" by Audioslave
    "Until We Fall" by Audioslave
"Sound Of A Gun" by Audioslave (based on the lyrics, this song is about the tragedy of mass shootings and all the people who were dying because of the War on Iraq, since it was around the mid-2000s)
I may have listed way too many recommendations, partly because I have listened to virtually all of them and the albums they're from, and because they're all emotional or relevant songs that a lot of people relate to. I haven't listened to much of his solo stuff, but it's worth checking out nonetheless.

Yes, Chris had some solo stuff. He came into the spotlight with SoundGarden in the late 80's. SoundGarden is a pretty decent rabbit hole to dive into. There was also Temple Of The Dog in the 90's(only 1 album I believe, but it was GOOD). Where he sang alongside Eddie Veder. Their voices REALLY complimented each other. Then there's Audioslave. Enjoy "discovering" Chris Cornell. He was one HELL of a talent. May he Rest In Peace. 😞 Your reaction was fantastic. I enjoyed watching you "discover" Chris, I was almost envious. First time I heard him in 1989, was a DAMN treat. Keep up the GREAT work and enjoy the ride of this particular rabbit hole. 🤘🤘🤘

That final guitar riff in this song perfectly represents a person beginning to cry, continuing to grow in that deep sadness, then wail and lose all emotions with screams and then continue to cry at a lower range with the emotion of defeat.
Unbelievable foreshadowing considering with what we all know now. And the last chord talking about his regrets, his blessings given, and his harm caused is more than poetic. It’s incredibly relatable in each person’s reflections of their own life.
    RIP CHRIS

My favorite from Chris is with Soundgarden together: "Fell on Black Days" helped me through many very dark days and helped me figuring my inner problems. I highly recommend it.
    Chris own words describing it:
"Fell On Black Days is the feeling of waking up one day and realizing you're not happy with your life. Nothing happened, there was no emergency, no accident, you don't know what happened. You were happy, and one day you just aren't, and you have to try to figure that out."

This song is a lullaby of love and sadness and loss. I remember the first time I heard this song I didn’t really *hear* the lyrics except for the chorus. It took me a couple of times to hear more of what he was saying (I’m really bad about that with music) but still only understanding a few words made my heart cry. And then when I finally read all the lyrics….man. What I’m saying is, the way in which he sang this brought me such sadness and such love and took me to a place that only talented artists can carry you. I didn’t even know the words and I FELT IT. This song always makes me cry, and I’m not a touchy-feely kind of person. I don’t care for romance movies and all that. This song is romantic and tragic and lonely and desperate, I’ll take it any day over “The Notebook” or “Titanic”. This is also going to be my burial song. You can’t change my mind. 😅

    Beautiful reaction.
It is so sad that that some of the best artists come from a place of pain. I think this is why their performances resonate so strongly, They sit on the fence between life and death and can draw inspiration and power from both sides. Sadly though when these artists come off the fence it seems that the majority choose the option to not go on , and without knowing each individuals story, it is not for us to judge

The reason you probably get so emotional listening to so many of these rock songs, is because they're poetry. Most of these bands, wrote, arranged and sung their own music, formed from their life experiences. That's missing in modern music, hell, most singers these days can't play an instrument, let alone write beautifully haunting lyrics like this.

Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days and Spoonman are also really great songs from them. This song is very haunting to listen to after his death. It's essentially about him waiting for death and Chris Cornell was known to suffer from depression, so to know years ago that he wrote a song like this about waiting for death to come and take him leaves me with a very sad feeling. The song is beautiful, but it takes on even more weight after his tragic passing.

This song has been my hands down, no question, favorite song of all time ever since I first heard it on the radio. Between the lyrics and Chris’ passion and voice… it’s amazing.
I know you reacted to Linkin Park, and loved Chester, Chris Cornell actually joined them for a live duet of Crawling, I would LOVE to see your reaction!
Also, they were great friends who bonded deeply over their own pains and lives, Chester sang “Hallelujah” at his funeral when he passed, and it is very unfortunate that both of these men were unable to find the happiness they longed for in life, and cut it short. May they finally be in joyous peace that they both deserve.

Your reaction brought tears to my eyes for some reason. And yeah, you can check out the various band stuff and I've seen pretty much all of the incarnations live and they were great. Tom Morello on the guitar also makes his own effects and modifies effects. But I seriously think you should immediately hear some of his solo acoustic stuff. There are a number of them in different settings but one of the greatest is from Alive acoustic concert where it's just him and a microphone and his guitar and it is mind-blowing. Because it's acoustic like that, it really puts the spotlight on what all he can do with his voice and his emotion. It's incredible. Two of many examples from that show are You Call Me A Dog, and, As Hope and Promise Fade.
There is also a fantastic live performance of him doing John Lennon's imagine. You can't miss it, there's almost kind of purple light on stage and his hair looks a little messy and he's standing there with an acoustic guitar and he just owns the audience. It's an incredible take on that iconic song.
He also did the James Bond movie theme! Casino Royale. It's super high production stuff of course but it's a killer song in his singing on it is amazing.
If you really want an emotional punch in the gut and something that is truly worthy, he contributed a song to a documentary about refugees in general, and in specific, I think about Syrian refugees. And so what you see in the video is a combination of him sitting in his studio with an acoustic guitar singing, and then scenes from the documentary. It truly is a gut punch, but it is so beautiful and so positive. Here is a link to the video:

One of my favorite all time songs, sitting alone in a hotel room with nothing but the free Bible in the drawer, reading a book full of death, wanting to find a way to get to heaven, praying to the gods and angels like a pagan, anyone who can take me to heaven, he says to a place I recall I was there so long ago, like we all feel that we were happy once and we would do anything to be happy again, just tell us what to do, he said he didn’t wanted to exclude any religion so he wanted to have more of a polytheistic feel than monotheistic. But just the yearning to be with God (any god) that would be the path to heaven and that peace and happiness it would bring. It’s such a beautiful song, guitar solo is also amazing

One thing I really love about Chris' singing is on emotionally personal songs like this, his main intention is not necessarily just hitting "perfect high notes" to capture the audience's attention, but the power, emotion, & depth of the notes he hits that he just allows u to FEEL the song (if that makes any sense.) 😇 Anyway, great reaction & hope u dig deeper into his amazing catalog!

Man, so many singers lost over the years due to many things. One thing that will always be true, Whether it's Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Layne Staley, and Freddie Mercury. Every single one of those amazing folks will always be remembered for the amazing talent they shared with us all and never be forgotten.

I'm not a big RATM fan and based on hearing him on Sirius Tom is really up his own ass. But him playing Chris was a thing of magic. The fact that his solo was standout in a song with a generational talent of a singer really shows the skill he has. This world is lessoned without Chris Cornell in it. R.I.P.

My absolute favourite song, thank you so much for reacting and giving your analysis on it Aileen 🙏
You nailed it with the bass (Tim Commerford) which is such an important foundation for this song. To my ear everything runs off it, including the lead from Tom Morello and drums from Brad Wilk. These other members are interestingly the band members from Rage Against The Machine.
There are some haunting lines within the lyrics to this song following Chris's passing which really strike an emotional chord now.
For some suggestions on Chris's solo work, would recommend Nothing Compares To You (live radio studio performance), Billy Jean (live) and Patience (if you watch the song's music video it will be quite emotional as it shows a lot of photos of Chris from his past).
    RIP Chris 🙏

Soundgarden one of the best grunge/metal bands, temple of the dog with members from him and pearl jam. A tribute band to woods from mother love bone, audioslave him and rage against the machine, and amazing solo unplugged stripped down raw songs like this one and nothing compares.
    Soundgarden: outshine
Temple of the dog: hunger strike,or say hello to heaven
Audioslave: I am the highway, or be yourself is all that you can be
Solo acustic: like a stone, nothing compares.

Greatest Vocalist of ALL TIME,Effortless SOUL!!Side-note : Love that methodical drumbeat 1-2-1-1-2-1-2-1-1-2,Fresh to Death,And the lyric=on my deathbed,I will pray,to the gods and the angels, like a pagan to anyone, who will take me to HEAVEN!!Damn, that some REAL SHIT right there!! Then, after that guitar solo,Chris comes in slow “alone I read until the day was gone”you think it’s winding down, then;as only Chris can. That crescendo kicks in & Chris let you Have it,Chris is giving it to you at the end! That right there is what makes him so so special !!
