It's called folk music. He wrote this on a ski lift after he and his wife had an argument.
Thank you for saying what I was going to. Folk. Like Mama's and Papa's, Arlo Guthrie, others in the 60's before psychedelic rock joined into the mix.
Yes. And I love folk music and the singer songwriters that create it.
Then he cheated on her
@@Angel-rq3pi + Still a phenomenal song.
@@Angel-rq3pi Not immediately after writing it
My husband of 37 years died in December. I held him in my arms as he took his last breath. I was by his side since his 20th birthday. This song melted me. It’s true. He filled up my senses and he is still loving me. I know I’m loving him.
❤
I welled up reading your comment 😢God Bless you you’re lucky to have had 37 years together 💗
I'm so sorry 🙏🥲❤️
What a love story. So sweet!
🙏 for you and your family and friends.
John Denver is a painter but instead of paint he uses words to paint you a picture. It’s beautiful to listen to his words.
a wonderful artist.
Very nicely said.. he sure is ❤❤❤
You are so right.
In his way, better than Dylan in my opinion
Colorado sounds lovely.
You must do what is best for your girls and you.
It’s a crazy world
John D was so popular in the 1970s my fave decade
And kids these days can't understand why us Gen X will never accept 'hey shawty, shake your fat ass on my face' as being a romantic love song.
😆😆
indeed 😂
Baby boomers love him as well.
Best comment I've read in a long time 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
True Story - in 2005 - two women were getting on an elevator in NYC. The elevator was playing a song - and the younger woman said to the older woman - "This is a really lovely song - do you know the name of it?" The older woman replied - "Yes - It's called Annie's Song. John Denver wrote it for me when we were married back in the early 70's."
😲😲😲😲
Wow
😮😮😮❤😮😮😮
And you left him.
Annie was his wiife. He said they had an argument so he left to go skiing, he wrote this for her while on the ski lift. The rest is history
And they ended up divorcing not too long after. Still a great song.
He and Annie had a mad fight over his womanizing and heavy partying. He wrote this to get back on her good side, didn't really work. Very good film/biography on him.
John Denver was America’s troubadour.
John and James Taylor!
No “Auto tune”. Just pure talent.
You are likely tired of hearing it, but once again, another artist from our generation with no autotune, not lip synching, just playing his guitar and singing with a band backing him up, live. Remembering people like this is why music today does so little for most of our generation--the difference between something cooked from scratch vs a vending machine product.
I was listening to another guy that says most all music is now autotuned. So sad. I think it's wings of pegasus that does the comparisons. He did Willie Nelson and the Highwaymen the other day. Autotuned. Sigh.
@@lisdk1732 Wings of Pegasus may single handedly kill autotune. His comparisons are fantastic. And introducing people to the classic artists, like these reactions do - it shouldn't be much longer before kids want to hear real voices again. Both my teenage nephews are into vinyl record albums and love the old artists. There is hope!
Annie is his wife. I cry every time I hear this song. it touches my soul. This song is a classic. Blessings to you and yours
Ugh same here I just posted. Something about it just rips my heart open.. I cry every single time! So beautiful .
So sorry for your loss. Sad, yet beautiful and tender.
Annie WAS his wife.
Don’t try to over think John Denver and his beautiful delicate vocals. His passion for nature and home resonate with every song. It is simply John Denver full stop.
I say that to many reactioners on YTube. Let the song carry you and don't overanalyze the lyrics. Enjoy the whole work of art....
If you want to hear his country side listen to “Thank God I’m a Country Boy “. Fun song.
😁Or Grandma's Feather Bed!😃
Oh yes!
@@julieCA58 oh yes!
Absolutely! I was about to suggest the same when I noticed your comment. It's definitely a fun song, too.
BP-Check out the live version of this with his "six million dollar band" from March 22, 1977. There's a suprise for you in there, BP ;-)
John was famous for his environmental activism. One of his loveliest songs is called "Calypso" written about the famed underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau and his ship Calypso.
Love that song!
I love when his voice soars! “Calypso” is gorgeous, but my favorite is “The Eagle and the Hawk.”
Folk music, the best. No cursing, no raunchiness, just plain speak from the heart.
The Eagle and the Hawk was a great example of painting a picture with song.
LOVE that song.
Saw John Denver in the 80"s, and when the intermission came in the concert..the band left the stage, and John stayed with his guitar...He sang songs through the break, and then was there when the band came back..finished the 2nd half of the concert.
He spoke and sang during that break time...and it was WONDERFUL!
Wow. That sounds soo good 👍🙏
I remember also seeing him in concert and did exactly that. What a performer.
Chris Isaak...same, in Austin late 90's. Bryan Ferry, same, same. Lindsay Buckingham, first FM tour back together, San Antonio Alamodome.... Never stopped playing his guitar and singing.
John Denver’s voice is so clear and his vibrato is unmistakable
The song was about his wife.
He was a folk singer! Neither country, rock, or pop would claim him. He didn't need them, he had the fans!!! At 70, I saw him live numerous times and owned all his albums!
We lost John Denver WAY too soon. What a gift he had. We will never know the extraordinary things he might have done had he been permitted to live to be an old man. It's great to watch you discover this amazing talent. Thank you for reacting to him.
The words spoke to you because John Denver was a fine poet. Poetry speak to your feelings as well as your head.
He has the clearest projection of his voice. He was a supreme songwriter and musician. It’s too bad he passed the way he did. He is so missed 😢❤RIP John Denver.
This was written by John Denver in 1974 for his wife at that time. He died in a plane crash in 1997.
"Rocky Mountain High" and "Sunshine On My Shoulders" are wonderful songs. They pull on the heartstrings. Also, cannot forget "Leaving On a Jetplane". John Denver was such an amazing singer. Much missed....❤
Folk Music at its finest
The Mandolin is what gives this song it's classical folk sound
Poems, Prayers and Promises. I LOVE that one
Me too!
One of my favorites!
Love!
John Denver is folk really, with an occasional foray into country. He’s a national treasure.
One of the clearest vocalists!!
Sunshine On My Shoulder is another lovely song.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one, so many great tunes.
John Denver was actually a pilot and died testing out his brand new plane 😥. This song is about his wife and I must admit it’s not my nature to go for something this sweet but, like you, it grabs me. I’m 70 so I grew up with this along with Beatles, etc. He’s just an amazing artist gone too soon. 🌺✌️
That is how a man woos a woman. John was a environmentalist a great lyricist musician and performer, he had been playing on the road for 2 decades by this show
This is pure poetic folk music sung by one of the greatest, purest vocal artists ever. IMHO.
John had incredible talents as a lyricist and 12 string guitar player.
Yes, Annie was his wife and he wrote it for her following an argument. After his death, Annie was asked in an interview what her favorite John Denver song was. She said that most people would assume it was Annie's Song, but she said her real favorite was "Perhaps Love." He recorded it as a duet with tenor Placido Domingo. If you really want your heart gently ripped from your chest, you should hear him sing his song "Seasons of the Heart," about their relationship falling apart.
This was my wedding song, it’s so beautiful. Unfortunately I lost my husband to brain cancer last Christmas after 28 years. You’ve managed to have me bawling my eyes out but I still loved it Thankyou
My girlfriend died of brain cancer in June. I feel you😥
I'm so sorry for your loss. 😥💜
The song Calypso was written in honor of Jacque Cousteau’s oceanic research ship. It’s a beautiful song. Jacque Cousteau was a oceanic researcher and is know for traveling the world studying the wild life of the world’s oceans. Jacque, along with a partner, developed the first open self contained under water breathing apprentice also known was the SCUBA.
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. My Dad loved listening to John Denver so I grew up hearing him constantly in our house. He didn't just have one style - listen to Grandma's Feather Bed for something completely different. John Denver was way ahead of his time. As early as the 1970s he was one of the biggest stars to voice concerns about climate changes, the environment and what we are doing to the planet. RIP JD
I second “Grandma’s Feather Bed” - such a fun song, and everyone always forgets about it !
Yes. And for me it’s, oddly, as emotional as Annie’s Song. I was number 17 of 19 grandchildren. In the 70’s and early 80’s we spend so much time at grandma’s house with the cousins, and we even sang this song a lot. But, obviously, my grandparents were older by the time I came along so I didn’t have them as long. This song always makes me smile.
And I also vote for Grandma, such wonderful memories it brings about my dad 😢
"CALYPSO" a beautiful song about boats, the sea and dolphins and the lessons they teach us.
John had such talent to write beautiful songs that transcend their time.
Since you are now the proud father of two baby girls, I think you should definitely react to Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance". It is just perfect for a girl dad.
Definitely!
That’s a WONDERFUL idea!!!! ❤
When I met my husband, 46 years ago, he played his guitar and sang me John Denver songs. I fell madly in love with him.
Like you, BP, i lost my mother to cancer. I was 16 years old. As you know, it was devastating. Im 47 now, & it still affects me. I got married when i was 26 and this was our wedding song. Imagine how bitter sweet it was just a couple years ago when i was going thru my mom's record's and discovered "Annie's song" on 45 among the collection. It was like her way of letting me know she's always been there, even thou she's not. 😢😭🥲 Thank you BP. Sometimes we don't realize when we need a good cry. Sending love, always ❤
"Calypso", "Paradise" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver are all worth a listen.
Agreed, all great tunes!
and on "Calypso", I recommend the video to see the ship which this song is about and the crew- This is the one ( Calypso John Denver Jacques Cousteau )
Forgot about "Calypso" - wonderful song - as said here, about Jacque Cousteau's crew/ship.
Calypso was one of my favorites
Don't forget "Sunshine on My Shoulders."
He flew up to the skies and never came back.
😢
I believe he was solo flying to Catalina and the plane ran out of fuel. So tragic...
John was a likable guy. He was on TV alot in the 70's and even if you disliked Folk music, you liked him.
He crossed over to acting and had a hit movie or two.
He was a huge part of the artists who provided an antidote to a public suffering from too much bad news.
John Denver songs you may like: "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Calypso" and "Leaving On a Jet Plane". He plays the fiddle in Thank God I'm a Country Boy.
I might add another suggestion... later in his career, shortly before he died... more mature, more reflective... maybe a bit more melancholy... 'Some Days are Diamonds, Some Days are Stones"
Annie was his wife. This hits 🎯 in the feels. YOU adore your wife and babies, this is about deep, ETRNAL LOVE.😊
He is a "Bard," a storyteller, an entertainment with a message.
It is "Folk Music 🎶" and it is a ballad.
"Homegrown Tomatoes 🍅!" Great song.
"Grandma's Feather Bed."
He was an activist for the environment, animals, and sea life.
"CALYPSO," is about his friendship with Jaques Cousteau, Oceanographer, conservationist.
And One of my faves, "HIGHER GROUND!" You will love it.
That Vibrato is everything.
Nice and subtle, he doesn't over do it thank goodness.
No matter how many times I hear this...I always tear up.
I think back in the 60s-70s when he was coming up it was the "Folk Music" scene... he was in the "Chad Mitchell Trio" for awhile...essentially an Vietnam protest group...then went solo and then obviously was a MEGA super star...
In my opinion one of the most beautiful songs ever written 💓💓💓💓
If a person ever writes lyrics like this for you, you know it is the "real thing". There are very few love songs that are as vulnerable and as sincere as this.
Or You're My Best Friend
Johns, For You is up there with Annies Song
And then they divorced
@@conniedeshazo3031 Yes 10 years later
@@paulineh4019 and not the only one. He wasn’t a great guy.
This song John wrote for his wife well on a ski trip after a big fight with his wife and when he came back from the trip he had the song of apology for her And it became one of his number one hit songs.
A one of a kind artist. Best concert I ever went to. Three hours. Him, a guitar, in the round, a small venue. Amazing voice. I’m so lucky
Had a similar experience at the Cellar Door in Washington D.C. He was still pretty new so had a light audience. He invited us to stay for the second set. What an experience!
He was technically a folk singer, but was mostly celebrated as a country artist. He probably had the purest voice of his generation. It was a great loss when he crashed his plane. He was also an accomplished pilot.
"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is probably my favorite of his. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is also a wonderful song, but makes me sad because of how he left us. Great reaction BP, keep it up.
I don’t think you meant it to be funny but you called him an accomplished pilot, right after you said he crashed his plane.🙄
Technically he's right, he was an accomplished pilot. The plane he crashed in was an experimental model that had design flaw. There's a channel on YT that talks about well known failed flights and what caused them. They covered the issue with the plane that failed John Denver. Well worth a watch.
@@hipsville I know! I watch a couple of those channels. I was just teasing him.
John Denver had the most beautiful voice ❤
This song always gives me goosebumps like I'm having right now. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung. Songs like this will always be around.
Give an ear to "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Folk rock at its best when John Denver is playing.
His note holding would make an almost perfect Oscilloscope pattern. Wow!
One that was gone too soon. I love his music. What a soul. RIP John Denver. ♥️💖💜
Poems, Prayers and Promises... You'll love it.
Must continue with Denver. So many incredible songs. His voice is pure gold. Rocky Mountain High, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Country Roads, Calypso, Sunshine on My Shoulders, My Sweet Lady, etc etc Annie was his wife. ❤️❤️❤️
Got to see John
three times in concert. He was perfect, always.
Annie was his wife.
He died so very young, and in one of those ways possibly preventable.
One of the most crystal clear and pure singing voices of all time
John Denver was a national treasure. Now, you must check out his song Calypso!!
Loved John Denver, RIP 🙏. He died too young. This is one of my favorites that he did... Thank you for playing it. He sang and did the song for his wife Annie
It’s folk music. This song is beautiful and touching.
His live rendition of Thank God I’m a country boy is absolutely amazing
I was in Boston for my 30th birthday in 1997 and ended up at a bar called the Black Rose. They had a live band and John Denver was there. He got on stage and sang a few songs.
Indifference is actually the opposite of love.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written ♥️
I miss you,John Denver.
When asked if he was a country singer,he replied" I'm an American singer".
“Annie's Song” was written for Denver's then-wife Annie Martell. Like much of Denver's music, he conflates his romantic love with a force of nature. Denver was perched above the Colorado mountains in a ski lift when he penned this track-which explains the visual nature of the song.
Love is not the opposite of hate. Love and hate are both passions. The opposite of love is apathy.
ONE OF THE BEST PERSONS OF THE 1970s heres proof was JOHN DENVER
This was at the wildlife concert, he was also a great conservationist. He was a folk singer before everything.
At 69 now I still believe the 70s had the best music of every kind. Still would like a reaction to Lady Sings The Blues by Billie Holiday! Great song and great movie!
This was a live performance known as "John Denver's Wildlife Concert (1995)." This song " Annie's song" was dedicated to his wife Annie Martell. John Denver passed away at the age of 53 in a plane crash. On his experimental glider plane in 1997. Rest In Peace John Denver. You gave the gift of song that will last an eternity. His music was Folk Rock with a bit of Country in the mix.
I love John. He was a military kid too. He was born in Roswell when his father was stationed there. Sunshine on my shoulder is another song with the same type of pace. Looking for something fun from him? Try Grandma's Featherbed. I'm glad you like him.
John wrote this so after he and his wife had just had a terrible argument. He went outside and regretted the whole thing. He sat down and poured his heart out trying to describe to Annie how he really felt about her. He’s literally sharing his soul to her … and us!
He was an environmentalist. He was doing concert for wildlife preservation. He wrote the song to his wife at the time, Annie.
John Denver was the first concert I ever went to. I was 9. My parents took me. I still have the John Denver teddy bear and I'm 57.
Take Me Home Country Road is played in stadiums in the NFL and other sporting events. Everybody in the stadium sings along and bond together. Gives me chills every time.. So awesome!! ❤❤❤❤
Back in the 60's & 70's it was called folk music. John Denver did an outstanding job of everything he touched. It was always beautiful.
Yes!!! I knew u would love this! It's one of my favorite songs by him! If u end up checking out more, listen to This Old Guitar! He tells a little story before he performs! And yes, this song was written for his first wife, Annie! There's actually a biopic about his life if u want to learn more about him! The movie is called "Take me home : The John Denver Story! Definitely worth a watch!
Was able to see him twice live. Absolutely amazing to hear this with 20,000 people quietly singing along with him.
Voice, guitar, and lyrics. John Denver can fill up our hearts to over-flowing. The real deal.
So many people fell in love over this song. They sang it at my wedding. Makes me cry every time.
Guy could sure write a song. RIP John Denver.
Thank you for giving John the respect he deserves. I saw him live in concert 5 times. So talented.
A ballad. Its a ballad, and John was a wonderful balladeer. Such a loss.
This is the best love song ever IMO. The older I get, the more I get back to more classic artitsts.
One of THE most beautiful love songs ever written and performed. Thanks for bringing back memories.
Very first concert I went to was John Denver. Just him and his guitar. No back up band, no percussion... Just John and his guitar. I had front row seats. One concert I would never forget. His last name was Duchendorf... his father had a hit in the early 70's during the truckers music craze called "hello, I'm a truck".
John Denver's music was incredible. When You start listening to his songs and realize that he wrote every single one of them, you will be in awe.
Thank you for reacting to this. What a beautiful song. He was such a peace loving man.
One of if not the greatest natural American talents. It's good to see you expanding your musical vocabulary. The music is folk/rock.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm really shocked at the music you've never heard!! My head is exploding! John Denver, one of the greatest folk singers ever! If you go down this rabbit hole, fair warning.... you will love his voice forever. I used to put my children to sleep to his greatest hits. Sunshine On My Shoulders worked so well t that my baby fell asleep getting a cast off her leg at a year old. She passed away at 1 year and 17 days. 37 years later it still brings tears, but it's such great song.
Love the mandolin in this version! A beautiful song that remains a classic.
Sunshine on my shoulders, Calypso, Thank god I’m a country boy, Take me home country roads, Leaving on a jet plane, all great songs!!
He was a folk singer You’re right his music was nature.
One of the things i loved about John Denver is that you can understand every word. The clarity of his voice, his lyrics, the emotion. I miss it. He was gone too soon
John Denver had it all. Incomparable. He concerts were beyond amazing. He really can’t be pegged into any genre of music. In that sense, he is truly a Renaissance man. He was so a dedicated environmentalist.
