The bassist Geezer Butler wrote most of the lyrics for Black Sabbath during the Ozzy years, I believe he was battling some depression during this time. And yes, you definitely need to check out "War Pigs" live in Paris.

Imagine someone who lived through the 1960s with all of it's folksy love music, the Beatles, Peter Paul & Mary etc, and then 1970 rolls over and suddenly they've got this song blasting in their faces. It would have blown some people's minds.

I met Ozzy and his family at a movie theater in Century City, California. Me my family was standing behind him- I didn't realize it was him until I saw the tattoo on his fingers-OZZY. I said to my husband quietly- it's Ozzy Osborn - he turned around and said hello. We talked for a few minutes about the movie we were seeing. He was a cute dad got up and went to the concession stand to get snacks for his kids.

Bill Ward always beat the drums like they owed him money! So energetic, great drummer. The lyrics you read were from a live performance lol. If you want to hear a great song by Ozzy I would suggest Mr. Crowley, has one of the greatest guitarists of all time playing lead guitar; Randy Rhoads.

This song is obviously a must review. Definitely a great track, and one of their most recognizable tunes, but I hope you'll revisit the original "Ozzy Era" Black Sabbath again soon. You'll find the further you dig into their B -sides, the closer you get to the genius of Sabbath...I recommend "Into the Void", "Behind the Wall of Sleep", "Hand of Doom, "Faires Wear Boots", "Lord of this World", "Wheels of Confusion", "Thrill of it All" and "Megalomania" (and believe me, it was hard to stop myself at only these) not only are all these songs masterpieces, but when you take into consideration the years that all these tracks dropped, It's undeniable how ahead of their time Black Sabbath was, and how they created another level of sonic intensity, which influenced an entirely new genre of music for decades to come.

This is 54 years old and still a awesome song. This is on of the songs that no one can cover and do it better then the original. He did bite a bat head off but he did not know it was a real bat at the time. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin open the flood gates for a lot of the greats. Ozzy and Dio were both lead sings for Black Sabbath and both had unique Voices.

What I would say to you is the same as I've said to other reactors listening to 1960's, 70's and 80's music - imagine back then, no internet and mostly getting your first taste of a group from the radio.
Try thinking about what was happening in the world at the time of the song's release, and other music before the song was released.
I can assure you this made an incredible impact on us kids here in the UK, as it was a single and so the national radio stations played it, which meant over 90% of young people heard it, rather than the smaller number who bought or listened to albums.
It was just so loud and vastly different from Beatles, Sinatra or other stuff we heard on the radio.

In 2013, Geezer Butler (the songwriter) told Mojo magazine that the song "Paranoid" was about "depression" "because I didn't really know the difference between depression and paranoia. It's a drug thing; most people become completely paranoid about people when they're using drugs, was my observation, and that ends up in prolonged depression for most people even after withdrawal.
The song was originally only intended as a 3-minute gap filler for the second studio album, to get to the usual length for LPs at the time. During the lunch break on the recording day (most of the first and second albums were recorded live in the studio in two days), Tony Iommi asked his bandmates if the riff could be used for this. Geezer Butler on the further course of events "We basically needed a three-minute filler for the album. Tony came up with the riff. "I quickly wrote the lyrics and Ozzy sang them live into the microphone as he read them during the studio recording."

I have mental health issues. I like songs that I can relate to.
I'm 55, and during the 80s I wasn't really into Black Sabbath or any of the "devil music," or so they called it.
It wasn't until later on in life that I could really appreciate it. It's not actually satanic. But back then, the panic was real. I laugh at my old self. Life happens.
I'm a disabled veteran with PTSD, depression and anxiety. My head sometimes interferes with my thinking.
80s were wild and had great music. Maybe this was 70s. I was too young to understand.
I know I heard it back then. I just couldn't connect the dots.

Wrote this two minute masterpiece in about 10 minutes to fill out the PARANOID LP. It remains my favorite brief song (other brief songs like those of the Ramones or the LA punks who did dozens of sixty second songs. GREAT song. One of the best ever.

Black Sabbath is credited with being the FIRST "heavy metal" band by a large number of people. They were one of the first bands to come out with that dark, fast and heavy sound that is associated with metal music. Iron Maiden created another branch of the heavy metal genre. Likewise, bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeath introduced the "speed metal" branch. (If you don't already know, Anthrax has done collaborations with Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys. They are definitely one of the bands you want to check out!)

BP as others have mentioned about who the Unholy Trinity were. While you had some valid mentions of bands that can/ should fit in that role they all came after the true Unholy Trinity Sabbath Deep Purple and Led Zeppeli by atleast 5 years most 10 years later

The OG's of heavy metal. Ozzy's voice is iconic, haunting, and instantly recognizable anywhere. Another reactor made me realize something that really surprised me after listening to him for many years - he sings with no vibrato at all.

Ozzy's pseudonym is "The Prince of Darkness". He was on heavy LSD, Qualudes and other psychedelics for most of his life, yet put him on a stage and he goes from the mumbling old man to a legend. 🐐.

My absolute favourite to dance to. Takes me right back to great times in the 70's. I still dance to this and it really wakens up the body.

Tony Iommi (guitar) was the best riff-meister of all time. He came up with the basic riffs for almost all Sabbath songs (Geezer Butler on bass came up with others). Ozzy was a great frontman and inspirational at producing vocals at will to fill the space, but Geezer wrote most of the lyrics. Geezer dreamed the main riff and lyrics for their song "Behind the Wall of Sleep" from their first album. This performance was before they got too heavy into drugs and booze. They were still poor kids from Aston (near Birmingham). They were so poor that Geezer couldn't believe it when he saw an indoor toilet for the first time. "You mean you take a crap inside your house?"

Just confirming what has already been stated below - the unholy trinity was Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. All legends in their own right.

Black Sabbath has so many bad ass songs. I could list at least 30 must hear songs by them. Could almost randomly pick any off the first 6 albums. A few recommendations: Hand of Doom, Lord of this World, Supernaut, Into the Void, The Warning, Symptom of the Universe, Children of the Grave, Snowblind. All great, and so many more, cant go wrong with Sabbath

It's often overlooked, but The Wizard is fantastic. Ozzy plays the harmonica, and Bill Ward is out of his mind on the drums
